Dark matter-baryon scaling relations in galaxies are important in order to constrain galaxy formation models. Here, we provide a modern quantitative assessment of those relations, by modelling the rotation curves of galaxies from the Spitzer Photometry and Accurate Rotation Curves (SPARC) database with the Einasto dark halo model. We focus in particular on the comparison between the original SPARC parameters, with constant mass-to-light ratios for bulges and disks, and the parameters for which galaxies follow the tightest radial acceleration relation. We show that fits are improved in the second case, and that the pure halo scaling relations also become tighter. We report that the density at the radius where the slope is -2 is strongly anticorrelated to this radius, and to the Einasto index. The latter is close to unity for a large number of galaxies, indicative of large cores. In terms of dark matter-baryon scalings, we focus on relations between the core properties and the extent of the baryonic component, which are relevant to the cusp-core transformation process. We report a positive correlation between the core size of halos with small Einasto index and the stellar disk scale-length, as well as between the averaged dark matter density within 2 kpc and the baryon-induced rotational velocity at that radius. This finding is related to the consequence of the radial acceleration relation on the diversity of rotation curve shapes, quantified by the rotational velocity at 2 kpc. While a tight radial acceleration relation slightly decreases the observed diversity compared to the original SPARC parameters, the diversity of baryon-induced accelerations at 2 kpc is sufficient to induce a large diversity, incompatible with current hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation, while maintaining a tight radial acceleration relation.
We use the galaxy rotation curves in the SPARC database to compare 9 different dark matter and modified gravity models on an equal footing, paying special attention to the stellar mass-to-light ratios. We compare three non-interacting dark matter models, a self interacting DM (SIDM) model, two hadronically interacting DM (HIDM) models, and three modified Newtonian dynamics type models: MOND, Radial Acceleration Relation (RAR) and a maximal-disk model. The models with DM-gas interactions generate a disky component in the dark matter, which significantly improves the fits to the rotation curves …
We present rotation curve fits to 175 late-type galaxies from the Spitzer Photometry & Accurate Rotation Curves (SPARC) database using seven dark matter (DM) halo profiles: pseudo-isothermal (pISO), Burkert, Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW), Einasto, Di Cintio (2014, DC14), coreNFW, and a new semi-empirical profile named Lucky13. We marginalize over stellar mass-to-light ratio, galaxy distance, disk inclination, halo concentration and halo mass (and an additional shape parameter for Einasto) using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. We find that cored halo models such as the DC14 and Burkert profiles …
We study the scaling relations between dark matter (DM) haloes and galaxy discs using 175 galaxies from the SPARC database. We explore two cosmologically motivated DM halo profiles: the Einasto profile from DM-only simulations and the DC14 profile from hydrodynamic simulations. We fit the observed rotation curves using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method and break the disc-halo degeneracy using near-infrared photometry and $Λ$CDM-motivated priors. We find that the characteristic volume density $ρ_{\rm s}$ of DM haloes is nearly constant over $\sim$5 decades in galaxy luminosity. The scale radius…
Noncommutative-like model (NC-like) is an interesting alternative inspired by string theory to understand and describe the velocity rotation curves of galaxies without the inclusion of dark matter particles. In a natural way, a Gaussian density profile emerges and is characterized by a parameter θ, called the NC-like parameter. Hence we aim to confront the NC-like model with a galaxy sample of the SPARC catalogue to constrain the model parameters and compare statistically with the Einasto density profile using the Akaike and Bayesian information criteria. According to our results, some galaxie…
The equation of motion in the generally covariant modified gravity (MOG) theory leads, for weak gravitational fields and non-relativistic motion, to a modification of Newton's gravitational acceleration law. In addition to the metric $g_{μν}$, MOG has a vector field $ϕ_μ$ that couples with gravitational strength to all baryonic matter. The gravitational coupling strength is determined by the MOG parameter $α$, while parameter $μ$ is the small effective mass of $ϕ_μ$. The MOG acceleration law has been demonstrated to fit a wide range of galaxies, galaxy clusters and the Bullet Cluster and Train…
The SPARC sample consists of 175 nearby galaxies with modern surface photometry at $3.6\,μm$ and high quality rotation curves. The sample has been constructed to span very wide ranges in surface brightness, luminosity, rotation velocity and Hubble type, thereby forming a representative sample on galaxies in the nearby Universe. To date, the SPARC sample is the largest collection of galaxies with both high-quality rotation curves and NIR surface photometry. The neo-MOND model used here to analyse the SPARC sample recognizably conforms to the general pattern of the classical MOND algorithm, with…
Galaxies follow a tight radial acceleration relation (RAR): the acceleration observed at every radius correlates with that expected from the distribution of baryons. We use the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to fit the mean RAR to 175 individual galaxies in the SPARC database, marginalizing over stellar mass-to-light ratio ($Υ_{\star}$), galaxy distance, and disk inclination. Acceptable fits with astrophysically reasonable parameters are found for the vast majority of galaxies. The residuals around these fits have an rms scatter of only 0.057 dex ($\sim$13$\%$). This is in agreement with the …
Cold dark matter (CDM) has shown to be an excellent candidate for the dark matter (DM) of the Universe at large scales, however it presents some challenges at the galactic level. The scalar field dark matter (SFDM), also called fuzzy, wave, Bose-Einstein condensate or ultra-light axion DM, is identical to CDM at cosmological scales but different at the galactic ones. SFDM forms core halos, it has a natural cut-off in its matter power spectrum and it predicts well-formed galaxies at high redshifts. In this work we reproduce the rotation curves of high-resolution low surface brightness (LSB) and…
We investigate a sub-sample of the rotation curves consisting of 45 HSB non-bulgy spiral galaxies selected from SPARC (Spitzer Photometry and Accurate Rotation Curves) database by using two dark halo models (NFW and Burkert) and MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) theory. Among these three models, the core-dominated Burkert halo model provides a better description of the observed data ($χ_ν^2$ = 0.33) than Navarro, Frenk and White (NFW, $χ_ν^2$= 0.45) and MOND model ($χ_ν^2$ = 0.58). So our results show that, for dark halo models, the selected 45 HSB non-bulgy spiral galaxies prefer a cored den…
In this work we study the mass distribution of two irregular galaxies, UGC 6446 and UGC 7524, by means of HI rotation curves derived from high resolution HI velocity fields obtained through the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope data archive. We constrain the stellar and gas content of both galaxies with stellar population synthesis models and by deriving the HI+He+metals rotation curves from the total HI surface density maps, respectively. The discrepancy between the circular velocity maxima of the stellar plus the HI+He+metals rotation curves and the observed HI rotation curves of both gal…
Outer and inner mass distributions of the irregular galaxies UGC 4284 and UGC 11861: Constraining the baryonic content through stellar population synthesis studies
The outer stellar halos of galaxies contain vital information about the formation history of galaxies, since the relaxation timescales in the outskirts are long enough to keep the memory, while the information about individual formation events in the central parts has long been lost due to mixing, star formation and relaxation. To unveil some of the information encoded in these faint outer halo regions, we study the stellar outskirts of galaxies selected from a fully hydrodynamical high resolution cosmological simulation, called Magneticum. We find that the density profiles of the outer stella…
The density profiles of dark matter haloes are commonly described by fitting functions such as the NFW or Einasto models, but these approximations break down in the transition region where halos become dominated by newly accreting matter. Here we present a simple, accurate new fitting function that is inspired by the asymptotic shapes of the separate orbiting and infalling halo components. The orbiting term is described as a truncated Einasto profile, $ρ_{\rm orb} \propto \exp \left[-2/α (r / r_{\rm s})^α- 1/β (r / r_{\rm t})^β\right]$, with a five-parameter space of normalization, physically …
Galaxies show different halo scaling relations such as the Radial Acceleration Relation, the Mass Discrepancy Acceleration Relation (MDAR) or the dark matter Surface Density Relation (SDR). At difference with traditional studies using phenomenological $Λ$CDM halos, we analyze the above relations assuming that dark matter (DM) halos are formed through a Maximum Entropy Principle (MEP) in which the fermionic (quantum) nature of the DM particles is dully accounted for. For the first time a competitive DM model based on first physical principles, such as (quantum) statistical-mechanics and thermod…
The condensation of baryons within a dark matter (DM) halo during galaxy formation should result in some contraction of the halo as the combined system settles into equilibrium. We quantify this effect on the cuspy primordial halos predicted by DM-only simulations for the baryon distributions observed in the galaxies of the SPARC database. We find that the DM halos of high surface brightness galaxies (with $Σ_{\rm eff}\gtrsim100$ $L_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$ at 3.6 $μ$m) experience strong contraction. Halos become more cuspy as a result of compression: the inner DM density slope increases with the bary…
In chameleon $f(R)$-gravity, the fifth force will lead to `upturns' in galaxy rotation curves near the screening radius. The location of the upturn depends on the cosmic background value of the scalar field $f_{R0}$, as well as the mass, size and environment of the galaxy. We search for this signature of modified gravity in the SPARC sample of measured rotation curves, using an MCMC technique to derive constraints on $f_{R0}$. Assuming NFW dark matter haloes and with $f_{R0}$ freely varying for each galaxy, most galaxies prefer $f(R)$ gravity to $Λ$CDM, but there is a large spread of inferred …
Recent observations of rotationally supported galaxies show a tight correlation between the observed radial acceleration at every radius and the Newtonian acceleration generated by the baryonic mass distribution, the so-called radial acceleration relation (RAR). The rotation curves (RCs) of the SPARC sample of disk galaxies with different morphologies, masses, sizes and gas fractions are investigated in the context of modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND). We include the effect of cold dark baryons by scaling the measured mass in the atomic form by a factor of $c$ in the mass budget of galaxies. …

We explore a function with two shape parameters for the dark-matter halo density profile subject to baryonic effects, which is a special case of the general Zhao family of models applied to simulated dark matter haloes by Dekel et al. This profile has variable inner slope and concentration parameter, and analytic expressions for the gravitational potential, velocity dispersion, and lensing properties. Using the NIHAO cosmological simulations, we find that it provides better fits than the Einasto profile and the generalized NFW profile with variable inner slope, in particular towards the halo c…
Cosmological $N$-body simulations predict dark matter (DM) haloes with steep central cusps (e.g. NFW, Navarro et al. 1996). This contradicts observations of gas kinematics in low-mass galaxies that imply the existence of shallow DM cores. Baryonic processes such as adiabatic contraction and gas outflows can, in principle, alter the initial DM density profile, yet their relative contributions to the halo transformation remain uncertain. Recent high resolution, cosmological hydrodynamic simulations (Di Cintio et al. 2014, DC14) predict that inner density profiles depend systematically on the rat…
We make rotation curve fits to test the superfluid dark matter model. In addition to verifying that the resulting fits match the rotation curve data reasonably well, we aim to evaluate how satisfactory they are with respect to two criteria, namely, how reasonable the resulting stellar mass-to-light ratios are and whether the fits end up in the regime of superfluid dark matter where the model resembles modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND). We fitted the superfluid dark matter model to the rotation curves of 169 galaxies in the SPARC sample. We found that the mass-to-light ratios obtained with sup…
Theories of modified gravity generically violate the strong equivalence principle, so that the internal dynamics of a self-gravitating system in free fall depends on the strength of the external gravitational field (the external field effect). We fit rotation curves (RCs) from the SPARC database with a model inspired by Milgromian dynamics (MOND), which relates the outer shape of a RC to the external Newtonian field from the large-scale baryonic matter distribution through a dimensionless parameter $e_{\rm N}$. We obtain a $>4σ$ statistical detection of the external field effect (i.e. $e_{\rm …
We assemble a database of 15 HSB and 15 LSB galaxies, for which surface brightness density and spectroscopic rotation curve data are both available and representative for various morphologies. We use this dataset to test the Navarro-Frenk-White, the Einasto, and the pseudo-isothermal sphere dark matter (DM) models. We investigate the compatibility of the pure baryonic model and baryonic plus one of the three DM models with observations on the assembled galaxy database. When a DM component improves the fit with the spectroscopic rotational curve, we rank the models according to the goodness of …
The application of Bayesian techniques to astronomical data is generally non-trivial because the fitting parameters can be strongly degenerated and the formal uncertainties are themselves uncertain. An example is provided by the contradictory claims over the presence or absence of a universal acceleration scale (g$_\dagger$) in galaxies based on Bayesian fits to rotation curves. To illustrate the situation, we present an analysis in which the Newtonian gravitational constant $G_N$ is allowed to vary from galaxy to galaxy when fitting rotation curves from the SPARC database, in analogy to $g_{\…

In the first part of this article we expand three fundamental aspects of the methodology connected to the determination of a relation among the spatial density and the gravitational potential that can be specialised to distinct mass density agglomerations. As a consequence, we obtain general relations for the diagonal entries of a square symmetric matrix without zeros, we provide an expression of the gravitational potential, suitable, to represent several different mass density configurations, and we determine relations for the semi-axes of a triaxial spheroidal mass distribution, as a functio…
Schulz (2017) galactic scaling rules, which include baryonic Tully-Fisher relation, have been surveyed in this work within the context of a modified dynamical model. These scaling relations are derived by employing the virial theorem and applying equilibrium and stability conditions. The scaling rules are also obtained by dimensional analysis of an integral relation between surface density and circular velocity of disk galaxies. To check the validity of the scaling relations based on observational data, we have defined, based on the properties of the model, the proper equilibrium size $R_{eq}$…
We present an empirical method to measure the halo mass function (HMF) of galaxies. We determine the relation between the \hi\ line-width from single-dish observations and the dark matter halo mass ($M_{200}$) inferred from rotation curve fits in the SPARC database, then we apply this relation to galaxies from the \hi\ Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) to derive the HMF. This empirical HMF is well fit by a Schecther function, and matches that expected in $Λ$CDM over the range $10^{10.5} < M_{200} < 10^{12}\;\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. More massive halos must be poor in neutral gas to maintain consistenc…

We propose a simple geometrical mechanism for the flattening of galactic rotation curves, the local compression of field lines around their planes induced either by the presence of thin string-like objects at the centers of galaxies or by elongated dark-matter halos, and elaborate on its possible role in Nature. We fit 83 rotation curves from the SPARC database with logarithmic potentials produced by a thin "wire" at the origin and then, after selecting 2 galaxies that yield the most interesting fits, analyze them with an alternative model, deformed versions of two popular models of dark-matte…
The mass--velocity--size relation of late-type galaxies decouples into independent correlations between mass and velocity (the Tully-Fisher relation), and between mass and size. This behaviour is different to early-type galaxies which lie on a Fundamental Plane. We study the coupling of the Tully-Fisher and mass-size relations in observations (the SPARC sample) and in empirical galaxy formation models based on halo abundance matching, and rotation curve fits with a hydrodynamically motivated halo profile. We systematically investigate the correlation coefficient between the Tully-Fisher residu…

We compare proposed solutions to the core vs cusp issue of spiral galaxies, which has also been framed as a diversity problem, and demonstrate that the cuspiness of dark matter halos is correlated with the stellar surface brightness. We compare the rotation curve fits to the SPARC sample from a self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) model, which self-consistently includes the impact of baryons on the halo profile, and hydrodynamical N-body simulations with cold dark matter (CDM). The SIDM model predicts a strong correlation between the core size and the stellar surface density, and it provides th…
