In this work we study the mass distribution of two irregular galaxies, UGC 6446 and UGC 7524, by means of HI rotation curves derived from high resolution HI velocity fields obtained through the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope data archive. We constrain the stellar and gas content of both galaxies with stellar population synthesis models and by deriving the HI+He+metals rotation curves from the total HI surface density maps, respectively. The discrepancy between the circular velocity maxima of the stellar plus the HI+He+metals rotation curves and the observed HI rotation curves of both galaxies requires the inclusion of a substantial amount of dark matter. We explore the Navarro Frenk and White, Burkert, Di Cintio, Einasto and Stadel dark matter halo models. We obtain acceptable fits to the observed HI rotation curves of UGC 6446 and UGC 7524 with the cored Burkert, Einasto and Stadel dark matter halos. In particular, Einasto and Stadel models prove to be an appropriate alternative to the Burkert dark matter halo. This result should increase the empirical basis that justify the usage of dark matter exponential models to adjust the observed rotation curves of real galaxies.
In this article we investigate the outer and inner mass distributions of the irregular galaxies UGC 4284 and UGC 11861, taking advantage of published HI and Hα high resolution rotation curves and constraining the stellar disk of both galaxies throughout stellar population synthesis studies. In addition we take into account the gas content of both galaxies deriving the HI+He rotation curve. The deduced baryonic rotation curves (star+gas) are inadequate to account for the total mass of UGC 4284 and UGC 11861, for that reason we examine the possibility of dark matter to explain the incongruity be…
The low surface brightness (LSB) spiral UGC 8839 is nearly devoid of star formation aside from a large HII region complex located in the extreme outer disc. In order to understand the origin and nature of this complex, we compare new Hα and archival broad-band images of UGC 8839 to similar data for four other spiral galaxies. We conclude that the extreme off-axis star formation in UGC 8839 is likely due to a hyper-stable disc that is dark matter dominated at all radii, with the Toomre parameter reaching a minimum only in the extreme outer disc. Using analysis strategies designed to be particul…
We present a disc-halo N-body model of the low surface brightness galaxy UGC 628, one of the few systems that harbours a "slow" bar with a ratio of corotation radius to bar length of $\mathcal{R} \equiv R_c/a_b \sim 2$. We select our initial conditions using SDSS DR10 photometry, a physically motivated radially variable mass-to-light ratio profile, and rotation curve data from the literature. A global bar instability grows in our submaximal disc model, and the disc morphology and dynamics agree broadly with the photometry and kinematics of UGC 628 at times between peak bar strength and the ons…
The formation scenario for giant low surface brightness (gLSB) galaxies with discs as large as 100 kpc still remains unclear. These stellar systems are rare and very hard to observe, therefore a detailed insight on every additional object helps to understand their nature. Here we present a detailed observational study of the gLSB UGC 1922 performed using deep optical imaging and spectroscopic observations combined with archival ultraviolet data. We derived spatially resolved properties of stellar and ionized gas kinematics and characteristics of stellar populations and interstellar medium. We …
We derive the circular velocity curves of the gaseous and stellar discs of UGC 4056, a giant barred galaxy with an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We analyse UGC 4056 using the 2D spectroscopy obtained within the framework of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey. Using images and the colour index g-r from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we determined the tilt of the galaxy, which allows us to conclude that the galaxy rotates clockwise with trailing spiral arms. We found that the gas motion at the central part of the UGC 4056 shows peculiar features. The rotation velocity of th…
Though S0 galaxies are usually thought to be `red and dead', they demonstrate often star formation organized in ring structures. We try to clarify the nature of this phenomenon and its difference from star formation in spiral galaxies. The luminous S0 galaxy with a large ring, UGC 5936, is studied here. By applying long-slit spectroscopy along the major axis of UGC 5936, we have measured gas and star kinematics, Lick indices for the main body of the galaxy, and strong emission-line flux ratios in the ring. After inspecting the gas excitation in the ring using line ratios diagnostic diagrams an…
Giant low surface brightness galaxies (gLSB) with radii of discs as large as 130 kpc challenge galaxy formation scenarios and it is still not well understood how they form and evolve through the cosmic time. Here we present analysis of deep long-slit spectroscopic observations of six gLSBs that we obtained with the Russian 6-m telescope: UGC 1922, Malin 2, UGC 6614, UGC1382, NGC 7589 and UGC 1378. We derived spatially resolved properties of stellar and ionized gas kinematics and characteristics of stellar populations and interstellar medium. The stars in the central regions are old and metal r…
Superthin galaxies are low surface brightness disc galaxies, characterised by optical discs with strikingly high values of planar-to-vertical axes ratios ($>$ 10), the physical origin and evolution of which continue to be a puzzle. We present mass models for three superthin galaxies: IC5249, UGC7321 and IC2233. We use high resolution rotation curves and gas surface density distributions obtained from HI 21 cm radio-synthesis observations, in combination with their two-dimensional structural surface brightness decompositions at Spitzer 3.6 $μ$m band, all of which were available in the literatur…
The dominant physical processes responsible for the formation and longevity of giant gaseous and stellar discs in galaxies remain controversial. Although they are rare (less than 10 confirmed as of now), giant low-surface brightness (gLSB) discy galaxies provide interesting insights given their extreme nature. We describe observations of UGC 1378 including deep spectroscopy with the Russian 6m telescope and multi-band imaging with Binospec at the MMT. Galaxy UGC 1378 has both high surface brightness and an extended low surface brightness discs. Our stellar velocity dispersion data for the high…
Spiral galaxies are studied using a simple global disc model as a means for approximate determination of mass profiles. Based on rotation curves and the amount of gas (HI+He), we find global surface mass densities consistent with measurements and compare them with B-band surface brightness profiles. As a result we obtain mass-to-light ratio profiles. We give some arguments for why our approach is reliable and sometimes better than those assuming ad hoc the presence of a massive non-baryonic dark matter halo. Using this model, we study galaxies NGC 7793, 1365, 6946 and UGC 6446. Based on a rota…
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of the nearby, massive, highly rotating hybrid galaxy UGC~12591, along with observations in UV to FIR bands. HST data in V, I, and H bands is used to disentangle the structural components. Surface photometry shows a dominance of the bulge over the disc with H-band B/D ratio of $69\%$. The spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting reveals an extremely low global star formation rate (SFR) of $\rm\sim0.1-0.2 M_\odot yr^{-1}$, exceptionally low for the galaxy's huge stellar mass of $\rm 1.6\times10^{11}M_\odot$, implying a strong quenching of i…
We performed the long-slit observations of spiral galaxy UGC11919 with the Russian 6-m telescope to study its kinematics and stellar population. The previous studies gave basis to suspect that this galaxy possesses a peculiarly low mass-to-light ratio $M/L_B$ of stellar population which could indicate the presence of bottom-light stellar initial mass function (IMF). The ratio $M/L_B$ estimated for different evolutionary models of stellar population using both the broad-band magnitudes and the detailed spectral data confirms this peculiarity if the disc inclination angle $i>30^o$, as it was obt…
Low surface brightness (LSBs) superthins constitute classic examples of very late-type galaxies, with their disc dynamics strongly regulated by their dark matter halos. In this work we consider a gravitational origin of dark matter in the brane world scenario, where the higher dimensional Weyl stress term projected onto the 3-brane acts as the source of dark matter. In the context of the braneworld model, this dark matter is referred to as the \emph{`dark mass'}.This model has been successful in reproducing the rotation curves of several low surface brightness and high surface brightness galax…

We describe the structural, stellar population and gas properties of the nearest Ultra Diffuse Galaxy (UDG) discovered so far: UGC2162 (z=0.00392; R$_{e,g}$=1.7$(\pm$0.2) kpc; $μ_g(0)$=24.4$\pm$0.1 mag/arcsec$^2$; g-i=0.33$\pm$0.02). This galaxy, located at a distance of 12.3($\pm$1.7) Mpc, is a member of the M77 group. UGC2162 has a stellar mass of $\sim$2($^{+2}_{-1}$)$\times$10$^7$ M$_\odot$ and is embedded within a cloud of HI gas $\sim$10 times more massive: $\sim$1.9($\pm$0.6)$\times$10$^8$ M$_\odot$. Using the width of its HI line as a dynamical proxy, the enclosed mass within the inner…
We use optical Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFU) to study the gas emission structure and kinematics in the inner 3.4$\times$4.9 kpc$^2$ region of the galaxy UGC 8782 (3C 293), host of a radio loud Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). The observations were performed with the GMOS-IFU on the Gemini North telescope, resulting in a spatial resolution of $\sim725$ pc at the distance of the galaxy. While the stars present ordered rotation following the orientation of the large scale disc, the gas shows a disturbed kinematics. The emission-line profiles present two kinematic components: a narrow ($σ\lesssi…
We study the properties of HI gas in the outer regions (~2r_25) of a spiral galaxy, UGC 00439 (z = 0.01769), using HI 21-cm absorption towards different components of an extended background radio source, J0041$-$0043 (z = 1.679). The radio source exhibits a compact core coincident with the optical quasar and two lobes separated by ~7 kpc, all at an impact parameter ~25 kpc. The HI 21-cm absorption detected towards the southern lobe is found to extend over ~2 kpc^2. The absorbing gas shows sub-kpc-scale structures with the line-of-sight velocities dominated by turbulent motions. Much larger opt…
We study the galactic wind in the edge-on spiral galaxy UGC 10043 with the combination of the CALIFA integral field spectroscopy data, scanning Fabry-Perot interferometry (FPI), and multiband photometry. We detect ionized gas in the extraplanar regions reaching a relatively high distance, up to ~ 4 kpc above the galactic disk. The ionized gas line ratios ([N ii]/Ha, [S ii]/Ha and [O i]/Ha) present an enhancement along the semi minor axis, in contrast with the values found at the disk, where they are compatible with ionization due to H ii-regions. These differences, together with the biconic sy…
Thin and thick disks are found in most spiral galaxies, yet their formation scenarios remain uncertain. Whether thick disks form through slow or fast, internal or environmental, processes is unclear. The physical origin of outer truncations in thin and thick disks, observed as a drop in optical and near-infrared (NIR) surface brightness profiles, is also a much debated topic. These truncations have been linked to star formation (SF) thresholds in Milky-Way type galaxies, but no such connection has been made for their low-mass counterparts or in thick disks. Our photometric analysis of the edge…

We performed long-slit spectral observations of two SB-type galaxies: NGC 5347, UGC 1344. They were previously suspected as the galaxies with unusually low mass-to-light ratios (on the ground of mass estimates from the Hi linewidths), which are in conflict with their observed colours. The observations were conducted at the Russian 6-m telescope. The aim of the study was to clarify the kinematics and structure, as well as the properties of stellar populations of the galaxies. The results of observations disproved the peculiarly low mass-to-light ratios of both galaxies. The most probable reason…

The Smallest Scale of Hierarchy (SSH) survey is an ongoing strategic large program at the Large Binocular Telescope, aimed at the detection of faint stellar streams and satellites around 45 late-type dwarf galaxies located in the Local Universe within $\simeq$10 Mpc. SSH exploits the wide-field, deep photometry provided by the Large Binocular Cameras in the two wide filters $g$ and $r$. This paper describes the survey, its goals, and the observational and data reduction strategies. We present preliminary scientific results for five representative cases (UGC 12613, NGC 2366, UGC 685, NGC 5477 a…
We have used the Arecibo L-band Feed Array to map three regions, each of 5 square degrees, around the isolated galaxies NGC 1156, UGC 2082, and NGC 5523. In the vicinity of these galaxies we have detected two dwarf companions: one near UGC 2082, previously discovered by ALFALFA, and one near NGC 1156, discovered by this project and reported in an earlier paper. This is significantly fewer than the 15.4 $^{+1.7}_{-1.5}$ that would be expected from the field HI mass function from ALFALFA or the 8.9 $\pm$ 1.2 expected if the HI mass function from the Local Group applied in these regions. The numb…
Superthin galaxies are a class of bulgeless, low surface brightness galaxies with strikingly high values of planar-to-vertical axes ratio $\rm(b/a> 10 - 20)$, possibly indicating the presence of an ultra-cold stellar disc. Using the multi-component galactic disc model of gravitationally-coupled stars and gas in the force field of the dark matter halo as well as the stellar dynamical code AGAMA (Action-based Galaxy Modelling Architecture), we determine the vertical velocity dispersion of stars and gas as a function of galacto-centric radius for five superthin galaxies (UGC 7321, IC 5249, FGC 15…
Giant low surface brightness galaxies (gLSBGs) with dynamically cold stellar discs reaching the radius of 130 kpc challenge currently considered galaxy formation mechanisms. We analyse new deep long-slit optical spectroscopic observations, archival optical images and published HI and optical spectroscopic data for a sample of seven gLSBGs, for which we performed mass modelling and estimated the parameters of dark matter haloes assuming the Burkert dark matter density profile. Our sample is not homogeneous by morphology, parameters of stellar populations and total mass, however, six of seven ga…
In a recent paper (Fumagalli et al. 2017) we reported on the detection of a diffuse H$α$ glow in the outskirts of the nearby, edge-on disc galaxy UGC 7321 observed with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) at the ESO Very Large Telescope. By interpreting the H$α$ emission as fluorescence arising from hydrogen ionised by an external (i.e., extragalactic) radiation field, we estimated the UV background (UVB) intensity in terms of HI ionisation rate (per ion) at $z\simeq 0$ to be in the range $Γ_{\rm HI}\sim 6-8\times 10^{-14}$ s$^{-1}$. In the present work, by performing radiative transf…
