The flattening rotation velocity $v(r)\to {\rm constant}$ found by Vera Rubin and collaborators and very apparent in the SPARC galaxy-rotation data coincides with Kepler's law in one less dimension. Thus, it is naturally reproduced by elongated dark matter distributions with the axis of prolateness perpendicular to the galactic plane. This theoretical understanding is borne out by the detailed fits to the rotation data that we here report: for equal dark matter profile, elongated distributions provide smaller $χ^2$ than purely spherical ones. We also propose to use the geometric mean of the individual halo ellipticities, as opposed to their arithmetic average, because $s=c/a\in (0,\infty)$ corresponds to spherical haloes for $s=1$, so that the usually reported average is skewed towards oblateness and fails to reveal the large majority of prolate haloes. Several independently coded fitting exercises concur in yielding $s<1$ for most of the database entries and the oblate exceptions are understood and classified. This likely prolateness is of consequence for the estimated dark matter density near Earth.
We report the identification of elongated (triaxial or prolate) galaxies in cosmological simulations at $z\simeq2$. These are preferentially low-mass galaxies ($M_s \le 10^{9.5} \ M_\odot$), residing in dark-matter (DM) haloes with strongly elongated inner parts, a common feature of high-redshift DM haloes in the $Λ$CDM cosmology. Feedback slows formation of stars at the centres of these halos, so that a dominant and prolate DM distribution gives rise to galaxies elongated along the DM major axis. As galaxies grow in stellar mass, stars dominate the total mass within the galaxy half-mass radiu…
Using N-body simulations we study the phenomenon of radial orbit instability occurring in dark matter haloes of the size of a dwarf galaxy. We carried out simulations of seven spherical models, with the same standard NFW density profile but different anisotropy profiles of particle orbits. Four of them underwent instability: two with a constant positive anisotropy, one with an anisotropic core and an isotropic envelope and one with a very small isotropic core and an anisotropic envelope. Haloes affected by the instability become approximately axisymmetric and prolate, with the profile of the s…
In the previous papers in this series, we have measured the stellar and \hi content in a sample of edge-on galaxies. In the present paper, we perform a simultaneous rotation curve and vertical force field gradient decomposition for five of these edge-on galaxies. The rotation curve decomposition provides a measure of the radial dark matter potential, while the vertical force field gradient provide a measure of the vertical dark matter potential. We fit dark matter halo models to these potentials. Using our \hi self-absorption results, we find that a typical dark matter halo has a less dense co…
A family of spherical halo models with flat circular velocity curves is presented. This includes models in which the rotation curve has a finite central value but declines outwards (like the Jaffe model). It includes models in which the rotation curve is rising in the inner parts, but flattens asymptotically (like the Binney model). The family encompasses models with both finite and singular (cuspy) density profiles. The self-consistent distribution function depending on binding energy $E$ and angular momentum $L$ is derived and the kinematical properties of the models discussed. These really …
We present measurements of the morphology of star-forming gas in galaxies from the EAGLE simulations, and its alignment relative to stars and dark matter (DM). Imaging of such gas in the radio continuum enables weak lensing experiments that complement traditional optical approaches. Star-forming gas is typically more flattened than its associated stars and DM, particularly for present-day subhaloes of total mass $\sim$$10^{ 12-12.5} \mathrm{M_{ \odot}}$, which preferentially host star-forming galaxies with rotationally-supported stellar discs. Such systems have oblate, spheroidal star-forming …
The flattening of spiral-galaxy rotation curves is unnatural in view of the expectations from Kepler's third law and a central mass. It is interesting, however, that the radius-independence velocity is what one expects in one less dimension. In our three-dimensional space, the rotation curve is natural if, outside the galaxy's center, the gravitational potential corresponds to that of a very prolate ellipsoid, filament, string, or otherwise cylindrical structure perpendicular to the galactic plane. While there is observational evidence (and numerical simulations) for filamentary structure at l…
We study the orbital properties of dark matter haloes by combining a spectral method and cosmological simulations of Milky Way-sized galaxies. We compare the dynamics and orbits of individual dark matter particles from both hydrodynamic and $N$-body simulations, and find that the fraction of box, tube and resonant orbits of the dark matter halo decreases significantly due to the effects of baryons. In particular, the central region of the dark matter halo in the hydrodynamic simulation is dominated by regular, short-axis tube orbits, in contrast to the chaotic, box and thin orbits dominant in …
The structural properties of individual dark matter haloes, including shape, spin, concentration, and substructure, are linked to the halo's growth history, but the exact connection between the two is unclear. One open question, in particular, is the effect of major mergers on halo structure. We have performed a large set of simulations of binary equal-mass mergers between isolated haloes with various density profiles, to map out the relationship between the initial conditions and merger parameters and the structure of the final remnant. In this paper we describe our initial set-up and analysi…
We present a set of highly flattened galaxy models with asymptotically constant rotation curves. The mass density in the equatorial plane falls like (distance)$^{-1}$ at large radii. Although the inner equidensity contours may be spherical, oblate or prolate, the outer parts are always severely flattened. The elongated shape is supported by rotation or tangential velocity anisotropy. The models are thickened Mestel discs, and form a previously undiscovered part of the Miyamoto & Nagai sequence of flattened galaxies. The properties of the models -- axis ratios, velocity dispersions, streaming v…
This paper is devoted to solve the galactic rotation problem for ESO138-G014 galaxy based on two theories: dark matter and Modified Newtonian Dynamics. Here we did the rotation curve analysis with two possible choices for the dark matter density profile, namely Burkert and Navarro, Frenk and White profiles. The analysis shows the dark matter distribution favored to Burkert profile (cored dark matter). The standard hypothesis for most spiral galaxies are known to be embedded in dark matter haloes has now been overshadowed by Modified Newtonian Dynamics, known as MOND, the leading alternative of…
Using estimates of dark halo masses from satellite kinematics, weak gravitational lensing, and halo abundance matching, combined with the Tully-Fisher and Faber-Jackson relations, we derive the mean relation between the optical, V_opt, and virial, V_200, circular velocities of early- and late-type galaxies at redshift z~0. For late-type galaxies V_opt ~ V_200 over the velocity range V_opt=90-260 km/s, and is consistent with V_opt = V_maxh (the maximum circular velocity of NFW dark matter haloes in the concordance LCDM cosmology). However, for early-type galaxies V_opt \ne V_200, with the excep…

While N-body simulations testify for a cuspy profile of the central region of the dark matter haloes, observations favor a shallow, cored density profile of the central region of, at least, some spiral galaxies and dwarf spheroidals. We show that a central profile, very close to the observed one, inevitably forms in the center of dark matter haloes if we make a supposition about a moderate energy relaxation of the system during the halo formation. If we assume the energy exchange between dark matter particles during the halo collapse to be not too intensive, the profile is universal: it depend…
We present useful functions for the profiles of dark-matter (DM) haloes with a free inner slope, from cusps to cores, where the profiles of density, mass-velocity and potential are simple analytic expressions. Analytic velocity is obtained by expressing the mean density as a simple functional form, and deriving the local density by differentiation. The function involves four shape parameters, with only two or three free: a concentration parameter $c$, inner and outer asymptotic slopes $α$ and $\barγ$, and a middle shape parameter $β$. Analytic expressions for the potential and velocity dispers…
Scalar Field Dark Matter (SFDM) comprised of ultralight ($\gtrsim 10^{-22}$ eV) bosons is an alternative to standard, collisionless Cold Dark Matter (CDM) that is CDM-like on large scales but inhibits small-scale structure formation. As a Bose-Einstein condensate, its free-field ("fuzzy") limit (FDM) suppresses structure below the de Broglie wavelength, $λ_\text{deB}$, creating virialized haloes with central cores of radius $\simλ_\text{deB}$, surrounded by CDM-like envelopes, and a halo mass function (HMF) with a sharp cut-off on small scales. With a strong enough repulsive self-interaction (…
Discoveries of extended rotation curves have suggested the presence of dark matter in spiral galaxy haloes. It has led to many studies that estimated the galaxy total mass, mostly by using the Navarro Frenk and White (NFW) density profile. We aim at verifying how the choice of the dark-matter profile may affect the predicted values of extrapolated total masses. We have considered the recent Milky Way (MW) rotation curve, firstly because of its unprecedented accuracy, and secondly because the Galactic disk is amongst the least affected by past major mergers having fully reshaped the initial dis…
A recently discovered young, high-velocity giant star J01020100-7122208 is a good candidate of hypervelocity star ejected from the Galactic center, although it has a bound orbit. If we assume that this star was ejected from the Galactic center, it can be used to constrain the Galactic potential, because the deviation of its orbit from a purely radial orbit informs us of the torque that this star has received after its ejection. Based on this assumption, we estimate the flattening of the dark matter halo of the Milky Way by using the Gaia DR2 data and the circular velocity data from Eilers et a…
We present a non-parametric reconstruction of the rotation curves (RC) for 88 spiral galaxies under the LOESS+SIMEX technique. In order to compare methods we also perform the parametric approach assuming core and cuspy dark matter (DM) profiles: PISO, NFW, Burkert, Spano, the soliton and two fuzzy soliton$+$NFW. As result of this two approaches, a comparison of the RC obtained is carried out by computing the distance between central curves and the distance between 1$σ$ error bands. Furthermore, we perform a model selection according to two statistical criteria, the BIC and the value of $χ^2_{r…
The degeneracy among the disk, bulge and halo contributions to galaxy rotation curves prevents an understanding of the distribution of baryons and dark matter in disk galaxies. In an attempt to break this degeneracy, we present an analysis of the spiral galaxy strong gravitational lens SDSS J2141-0001, discovered as part of the SLACS survey. We present new Hubble Space Telescope multicolor imaging, gas and stellar kinematics data derived from long-slit spectroscopy, and K-band LGS adaptive optics imaging, both from the Keck telescopes. We model the galaxy as a sum of concentric axisymmetric bu…
