In the work, the thermal and vacuum fluctuation is predicted capable of generating a Casimir thrust force on a rotating chiral particle, which will push or pull the particle along the rotation axis. The Casimir thrust force comes from two origins: i) the rotation-induced symmetry-breaking in the vacuum and thermal fluctuation and ii) the chiral cross-coupling between electric and magnetic fields and dipoles, which can convert the vacuum spin angular momentum (SAM) to the vacuum force. Using the fluctuation dissipation theorem (FDT), we derive the analytical expressions for the vacuum thrust force in dipolar approximation and the dependences of the force on rotation frequency, temperature and material optical properties are investigated. The work reveals a new mechanism to generate a vacuum force, which opens a new way to exploit zero-point energy of vacuum.
Effects due to vacuum fluctuations in a semi-classical model of a massless scalar field interacting with a rotating ring are investigated by introducing a collective coordinate for the motion of the background potential. The model is solved for a repulsive periodic $δ$-distribution background of arbitrary strength. The Casimir energy of this system is calculated in the co-rotating and, by Legendre transformation, in the stationary laboratory frame. The zero-point contribution to the angular momentum in this model is bounded below by $|\ell_{ZP}|\leq\hbar/24$ and the ground state of the entire …
In this paper we treat the Law's effective Hamiltonian of the Dynamical Casimir Effect in a cavity and construct an analytic approximate solution of the time-dependent Schr{ö}dinger equation under the general setting through a kind of rotating wave approximation (RWA). To the best of our knowledge this is the finest analytic approximate solution.
We study the lateral Casimir force experienced by a particle that rotates near a planar surface. The origin of this force lies in the symmetry breaking induced by the particle rotation in the vacuum and thermal fluctuations of its dipole moment, and, therefore, in contrast to lateral Casimir forces previously described in the literature for corrugated surfaces, it exists despite the translational invariance of the planar surface. Working within the framework of fluctuational electrodynamics, we derive analytical expressions for the lateral force and analyze its dependence on the geometrical an…
We introduce the concept of Casimir friction, i.e. friction due to quantum fluctuations. In this first article we describe the calculation of a constant torque, arising from the scattering of quantum fluctuations, on a dielectric rotating in an electromagnetic vacuum.
We consider the angular momentum of a charge q rotating in a homogeneous magnetic field and study the role of the electromagnetic quantum vacuum. Its orbital angular momentum is caused by the recoil of energetic vacuum photons that grows as n^2, i.e. faster than the kinetic angular momentum -2n\hbar of a Landau level.
This paper extends our recent study on Casimir friction forces for dielectric plates moving parallel to each other [J. S. Høye and I. Brevik, Eur. Phys. J. D {\bf 68}, 61 (2014)], to the case where the plates are no longer restricted to rectilinear motion. Part of the mathematical formalism thereby becomes more cumbersome, but reduces in the end to the form that we could expect to be the natural one in advance. As an example, we calculate the Casimir torque on a planar disc rotating with constant angular velocity around its vertical symmetry axis next to another plate.
The phenomenon of particle creation within a resonantly vibrating lossy cavity is investigated for the example of a massless scalar field at finite temperature. Leakage is provided by insertion of a dispersive mirror into a larger ideal cavity. Via the rotating wave approximation we demonstrate that for the case of parametric resonance the exponential growth of the number of created particles and the strong enhancement at finite temperatures are preserved in the presence of reasonable losses. The relevance for experimental tests of quantum radiation via the dynamical Casimir effect is addresse…
We consider here, a two-atom system is uniformly moving through a circular ring at an ultra-relativistic speed and weakly interacting with common external fields. The vacuum fluctuations of the quantum fields generate the entanglement between the atoms. Hence an effective energy shift is originated, which depends on the inter-atomic distance. This is commonly known as resonance Casimir-Polder interaction (RCPI). It is well known that, for a linearly accelerated system coupled with a massless scalar field, we get a thermal response when the local inertial approximation is valid. On the contrary…
We consider the dissipative single-qubit circuit QED architecture in which the atomic transition frequency undergoes a weak external time-modulation. For sinusoidal modulation with linearly varying frequency we derive effective Hamiltonians that resemble the Landau-Zener problem of finite duration associated to a two- or multi-level systems. The corresponding off-diagonal coupling coefficients originate either from the rotating or the counter-rotating terms in the Rabi Hamiltonian, depending on the values of the modulation frequency. It is demonstrated that in the dissipation less case one can…
Recently, we have demonstrated that for a certain class of Casimir-type systems ("devices") the energy of zero-point vacuum fluctuations reaches its global minimum when the device rotates about a certain axis rather than remains static. This rotational vacuum effect may lead to the emergence of permanently rotating objects provided the negative rotational energy of zero-point fluctuations cancels the positive rotational energy of the device itself. In this paper, we show that for massless electrically charged particles the rotational vacuum effect should be drastically (astronomically) enhance…
The phenomenon of particle creation within an almost resonantly vibrating cavity with losses is investigated for the example of a massless scalar field at finite temperature. A leaky cavity is designed via the insertion of a dispersive mirror into a larger ideal cavity (the reservoir). In the case of parametric resonance the rotating wave approximation allows for the construction of an effective Hamiltonian. The number of produced particles is then calculated using response theory as well as a non-perturbative approach. In addition we study the associated master equation and briefly discuss th…
Electromagnetic waves propagation on either rotating or anisotropic spacetime backgrounds (such as Kerr and Gödel metrics, or Bianchi-I metric) produce a reduction of the magnitude of Casimir forces between plates. These curved spacetimes behave as chiral or birefringent materials producing dispersion of electromagnetic waves, in such a way that right- and left-circularly polarized light waves propagate with different phase velocities. Results are explicitly calculated for discussed cases. The difference on the wavevectors of the two polarized electromagnetic waves produces an abatement of a C…
We examine the lateral Casimir-Polder force acting on a circular rotating emitter near a dielectric plane surface. As the circular motion breaks time-reversal symmetry, the spontaneous emission in a direction parallel to the surface is in general anisotropic. We show that a lateral force arises which can be interpreted as a recoil force because of this asymmetric emission. The force is an oscillating function of the distance between the emitter and the surface, and the lossy character of the dielectric strongly influences the results in the near-field regime. The force exhibits also a populati…
We present and investigate an analogue model for a controllable photon geberation via the dynamical Casimir effect (DCE) in a cavity containing a degenerate optical amplifier (OPA) which is pumed by an amplitude-modulated field. The time modulation of the pump field in the model OPA system is equivalent to a periodic modulation of the cavity length, which is responsible for the generation of the Casimir radiation. By taking into account the rapidly oscillating terms of the modulation frequency, the effects of the corresponding counter-rotating terms (CRTs) on the analogue Casimir radiation eme…

Differential force measurements between spheres coated with either nickel or gold and rotating disks with periodic distributions of nickel and gold are reported. The rotating samples are covered by a thin layer of titanium and a layer of gold. While titanium is used for fabrication purposes, the gold layer (nominal thicknesses of 21, 37, 47 and 87 nm) provides an isoelectronic environment, and is used to nullify the electrostatic contribution but allow the passage of long wavelength Casimir photons. A direct comparison between the experimental results and predictions from Drude and plasma mode…
We show that even small nonlinearities significantly affect particle production in the dynamical Casimir effect at large evolution times. To that end, we derive the effective Hamiltonian and resum leading loop corrections to the particle flux in a massless scalar field theory with time-dependent Dirichlet boundary conditions and quartic self-interaction. To perform the resummation, we assume small deviations from the equilibrium and employ a kind of rotating wave approximation. Besides that, we consider a quantum circuit analog of the dynamical Casimir effect, which is also essentially nonline…
We study theoretically the non-stationary circuit QED system in which the artificial atom transition frequency has a small periodic modulation in time, prescribed externally. We show that, in the dispersive regime, when the modulation periodicity meets the `resonances', the dynamics may be described by the dynamical Casimir effect, Jaynes-Cummings or Anti-Jaynes-Cummings effective Hamiltonians. In the resonant atom-cavity regime, under the modulation `resonance' the dynamics resembles the behavior of the dynamical Casimir effect in a vibrating cavity containing a resonant two-level atom, and e…
We obtain improved constraints on the coupling constants of axion-like particles to nucleons from a recently performed Casimir-less experiment. For this purpose, the differential force between a Au-coated sphere and either Au or Si sectors of a rotating disc, arising due to two-axion exchange, is calculated. Over a wide region of axion masses from 1.7 meV to 0.9 eV the obtained constraints are stronger up to a factor of 60 than the previously known ones following from the Cavendish-type experiment and measurements of the effective Casimir pressure.
In this paper, we extend previous results on the quantum vacuum or Casimir energy, for a noninteracting rotating system and for an interacting nonrotating system, to the case where both rotation and interactions are present. Concretely, we first reconsider the noninteracting rotating case of a scalar field theory and propose an alternative and simpler method to compute the Casimir energy based on a replica trick and the Coleman-Weinberg effective potential. We then consider the simultaneous effect of rotation and interactions, including an explicit breaking of rotational symmetry. To study thi…
We propose a set of devices of simple geometrical design which may exhibit a permanent rotation due to quantum (vacuum) fluctuations. These objects - which have no moving parts - impose certain boundary conditions on quantum fluctuations thus affecting their vacuum energy similarly to the standard Casimir effect. The boundary conditions are chosen in such a way that the vacuum energy for a static device is larger compared to the energy of the vacuum fluctuations in a state when the device rotates about a certain axis. The optimal frequency of rotation is determined by geometry and moment of in…
We propose to use a rotating corrugated material plate in order to stir, through the Casimir-Polder interaction, quantized vortices in an harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. The emergence of such vortices within the condensate cannot be explained with a computation of the Casimir-Polder potential based on the pairwise summation approach or on the proximity force approximation. It thus appears as a genuine signature of non-trivial geometry effects on the electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations, which fully exploits the superfluid nature of the sample. In order to discuss quantitatively t…

We consider an analog of particle production in a quartic $O(N)$ quantum oscillator with time-dependent frequency, which is a toy model of particle production in the dynamical Casimir effect and de Sitter space. We calculate exact quantum averages, Keldysh propagator, and particle number using two different methods. First, we employ a kind of rotating wave approximation to estimate these quantities for small deviations from stationarity. Second, we extend these results to arbitrarily large deviations using the Schwinger-Keldysh diagrammatic technique. We show that in strongly nonstationary sit…
A small dipole oscillator moving along a circular trajectory in zero-point electromagnetic field ( ZPF ) and with a polarization normal to the rotation plane, is considered. Temporal periodicity conditions are imposed on ZPF, associated with the way the rotating oscillator observes ZPF. They are similar to spatial boundary conditions in Casimir phenomenon and therefore result in ZPF spectrum change from continuous one to a discrete one and, as a consequence, an effective temperature of the modified ZPF (Y. S. Levin ). The average centripetal average force on the oscillator, originating from th…
