Recently, two of the authors obtained estimates for the adjoint restriction operator to finite type curves with respect to general measures. Strikingly, it turns out that some of such estimates are sharp, especially when the measures are given by surface measures under certain condition. A typical example is the surface measure on the sphere. We demonstrate sharpness of such estimates by constructing an example and, also, discuss related estimates over different type of surfaces.
It was proved independently by Foschi and Hundertmark, Zharnitsky that Gaussians extremize the adjoint Fourier restriction inequality for L^2 functions on the paraboloid in the two lowest-dimesional cases. Here we prove that Gaussians are critical points for the L^p to L^q adjoint Fourier restriction inequalities if and only if p=2. Also, Gaussians are critial points for the L^2 to L^r_t L^q_x Strichartz inequalities for all admissible pairs (r,q) in (1,infinity)^2.
We prove that in dimensions $d \geq 3$, the non-endpoint, Lorentz-invariant $L^2 \to L^p$ adjoint Fourier restriction inequality on the $d$-dimensional hyperboloid $\mathbb{H}^d \subseteq \mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ possesses maximizers. The analogous result had been previously established in dimensions $d=1,2$ using the convolution structure of the inequality at the lower endpoint (an even integer); we obtain the generalization by using tools from bilinear restriction theory.
In this article, we develop a linear profile decomposition for the $L^p \to L^q$ adjoint Fourier restriction operator associated to the sphere, valid for exponent pairs $p<q$ for which this operator is bounded. Such theorems are new when $p \neq 2$. We apply these methods to prove new results regarding the existence of extremizers and the behavior of extremizing sequences for the spherical extension operator. Namely, assuming boundedness, extremizers exist if $q>\max\{p,\tfrac{d+2}d p'\}$, or if $q=\tfrac{d+2}d p'$ and the operator norm exceeds a certain constant times the operator norm of the…
In this note we consider the adjoint restriction estimate for hypersurface under additional regularity assumption. We obtain the optimal $H^s$-$L^q$ estimate and its mixed norm generalization. As applications we prove some weighted Strichartz estimates for the propagator $e^{it(-Δ)^{α/2}}φ$, $α>0$.
It is known that extremizers for the $L^2$ to $L^6$ adjoint Fourier restriction inequality on the cone in $\mathbb{R}^3$ exist. Here we show that nonnegative extremizing sequences are precompact, after the application of symmetries of the cone. If we use the knowledge of the exact form of the extremizers, as found by Carneiro, then we can show that nonnegative extremizing sequences converge, after the application of symmetries.
We study the problem of existence of extremizers for the $L^2$ to $L^p$ adjoint Fourier restriction inequalities on the hyperboloid in dimensions 3 and 4, in which cases $p$ is an even integer. We will use the method developed by Foschi to show that extremizers do not exist.
The adjoint Fourier restriction inequality for the sphere $S^2$ states that if $f\in\lt(S^2,σ)$ then $\widehat{fσ}\in L^4(\reals^3)$. We prove that all critical points $f$ of the functional $\norm{\widehat{fσ}}_{L^4}/\norm{f}_{\lt}$ are smooth; that any complex-valued extremizer for the inequality is a nonnegative extremizer multiplied by the character $e^{ix\cdotξ}$ for some $ξ$; and that complex-valued extremizing sequences for the inequality are precompact modulo multiplication by characters.
In this paper we prove a sharp trilinear inequality which is motivated by a program to obtain the sharp form of the $L^2 - L^6$ Tomas-Stein adjoint restriction inequality on the circle. Our method uses intricate estimates for integrals of sixfold products of Bessel functions developed in a companion paper. We also establish that constants are local extremizers of the Tomas-Stein adjoint restriction inequality as well as of another inequality appearing in the program.
We show that, possibly after a compactification of spacetime, constant functions are local maximizers of the Tomas-Stein adjoint Fourier restriction inequality for the cone and paraboloid in every dimension, and for the sphere in dimension up to 60. For the cone and paraboloid we work from the PDE framework, which enables the use of the Penrose and the Lens transformations, which map the conjectured optimal functions into constants.
For cylindrically symmetric functions dyadically supported on the paraboloid, we obtain a family of sharp linear and bilinear adjoint restriction estimates. As corollaries, we first extend the ranges of exponents for the classical \textit{linear or bilinear adjoint restriction conjectures} for such functions and verify the \textit{linear adjoint restriction conjecture} for the paraboloid. We also interpret the restriction estimates in terms of solutions to the Schrödinger equation and establish the analogous results when the paraboloid is replaced by the lower third of the sphere.
We prove that constant functions are the unique real-valued maximizers for all $L^2-L^{2n}$ adjoint Fourier restriction inequalities on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}\subset\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\in\{3,4,5,6,7\}$, where $n\geq 3$ is an integer. The proof uses tools from probability theory, Lie theory, functional analysis, and the theory of special functions. It also relies on general solutions of the underlying Euler-Lagrange equation being smooth, a fact of independent interest which we establish in a companion paper. We further show that complex-valued maximizers coincide with nonnegative maxi…
We prove global Fourier restriction estimates for elliptic, or two-sheeted, hyperboloids of arbitrary dimension $d \geq 2$, extending recent joint work with Oliveira e Silva and Stovall. Our results are unconditional in the (adjoint) bilinear range, $q > \frac{2(d+3)}{d+1}$, and extend conditionally upon further progress toward the local restriction conjecture for elliptic surfaces.
We prove the existence of functions that extremize the endpoint $L^2$ to $L^4$ adjoint Fourier restriction inequality on the one-sheeted hyperboloid in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^4$ and that, taking symmetries into consideration, any extremizing sequence has a subsequence that converges to an extremizer.
We show that a certain conjectured optimal reverse Littlewood- Paley inequality would, if true, imply sharp results for the Kakeya maximal function, the Bochner-Riesz means and the Fourier restriction operator.
In connection with the restriction problem in $\mathbb R^n$ for hypersurfaces including the sphere and paraboloid, the bilinear (adjoint) restriction estimates have been extensively studied. However, not much is known about such estimates for surfaces with codimension (and dimension) larger than one. In this paper we show sharp bilinear $L^2 \times L^2 \to L^q$ restriction estimates for general surfaces of higher codimension. In some special cases, we can apply these results to obtain the corresponding linear estimates.
We study the trace class perturbations of the whole-line, discrete Laplacian and obtain a new bound for the perturbation determinant of the corresponding non-self-adjoint Jacobi operator. Based on this bound, we refine the Lieb--Thirring inequality due to Hansmann--Katriel. The spectral enclosure for such operators is also discussed.
In this paper we consider adjoint restriction estimates for space curves with respect to general measures and obtain optimal estimates when the curves satisfy a finite type condition. The argument here is new in that it doesn't rely on the \emph{offspring curve} method, which has been extensively used in the previous works. Our work was inspired by the recent argument due to Bourgain and Guth which was used to deduce linear restriction estimates from multilinear estimates for hypersurfaces.
Conditional on Fourier restriction estimates for elliptic hypersurfaces, we prove optimal restriction estimates for polynomial hypersurfaces of revolution for which the defining polynomial has non-negative coefficients. In particular, we obtain uniform--depending only on the dimension and polynomial degree--estimates for restriction with affine surface measure, slightly beyond the bilinear range. The main step in the proof of our linear result is an (unconditional) bilinear adjoint restriction estimate for pieces at different scales.
We consider an abstract non-negative self-adjoint operator $H$ on an $L^2$-space. We derive a characterization for the restriction estimate $\| dE_H(λ) \|_{L^p \to L^{p'}} \le C λ^{\frac{d}{2}(\frac{1}{p} - \frac{1}{p'}) -1}$ in terms of higher order derivatives of the semigroup $e^{-tH}$. We provide an alternative proof of a result in [1] which asserts that dispersive estimates imply restriction estimates. We also prove $L^p-L^{p'}$ estimates for the derivatives of the spectral resolution of $H$.
We provide $L^p \to L^q$ refinements on some Fourier restriction estimates obtained using polynomial partitioning. Let $S\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ be a compact $C^\infty$ surface with strictly positive second fundamental form. We derive sharp $L^p(S) \to L^q(\mathbb{R}^3)$ estimates for the associated Fourier extension operator for $q> 3.25$ and $q\geq 2p'$ from an estimate of Guth that was used to obtain $L^\infty(S) \to L^q(\mathbb{R}^3)$ bounds for $q>3.25$. We present a slightly weaker result when $S$ is the hyperbolic paraboloid in $\mathbb{R}^3$ based on the work of Cho and Lee. Finally, we …
The adjoint Fourier restriction inequality of Tomas and Stein states that the mapping $f\mapsto \widehat{fσ}$ is bounded from $\lt(S^2)$ to $L^4(\reals^3)$. We prove that there exist functions which extremize this inequality, and that any extremizing sequence of nonnegative functions has a subsequence which converges to an extremizer.
In this paper we find the sharp forms and characterize the complex-valued extremizers of the adjoint Fourier restriction inequalities on the sphere $$\big\|\widehat{f σ}\big\|_{L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{d})} \lesssim \|f\|_{L^{q}(\mathbb{S}^{d-1},σ)}$$ in the cases $(d,p,q) = (d,2k, q)$ with $d,k \in \mathbb{N}$ and $q\in \mathbb{R}^+ \cup \{\infty\}$ satisfying: (a) $k = 2$, $q \geq 2$ and $3 \leq d\leq 7$; (b) $k = 2$, $q \geq 4$ and $d \geq 8$; (c) $k \geq 3$, $q \geq 2k$ and $d \geq 2$. We also prove a sharp multilinear weighted restriction inequality, with weight related to the $k$-fold convoluti…
In this note, we present two arguments showing that the classical \textit{linear adjoint cone restriction conjecture} holds for the class of functions supported on the cone and invariant under the spatial rotation in all dimensions. The first is based on a dyadic restriction estimate, while the second follows from a strengthening version of the Hausdorff-Young inequality and the Hölder inequality in the Lorentz spaces.
We prove (adjoint) bilinear restriction estimates for general phases at different scales in the full non-endpoint mixed norm range, and give bounds with a sharp and explicit dependence on the phases. These estimates have applications to high-low frequency interactions for solutions to partial differential equations, as well as to the linear restriction problem for surfaces with degenerate curvature. As a consequence, we obtain new bilinear restriction estimates for elliptic phases and wave/Klein-Gordon interactions in the full bilinear range, and give a refined Strichartz inequality for the Kl…
Uniqueness in the Calderón problem in dimension bigger than two was usually studied under the assumption that conductivity has bounded gradient. For conductivities with unbounded gradients uniqueness results have not been known until recent years. The latest result due to Haberman basically relies on the optimal $L^2$ restriction estimate for hypersurface which is known as the Tomas-Stein restriction theorem. In the course of developments of the Fourier restriction problem bilinear and multilinear generalizations of the (adjoint) restriction estimates under suitable transversality condition be…
We prove mixed norm space-time estimates for solutions of the Schroedinger equation, with initial data in $L^p$ Sobolev or Besov spaces, and clarify the relation with adjoint restriction.
