Linear optical realizations of Bell state measurement (BSM) on two single-photon qubits succeed with probability $p_s$ no higher than $0.5$. However pre-detection quadrature squeezing, i.e., quantum noise limited phase sensitive amplification, in the usual linear-optical BSM circuit, can yield ${p_s \approx 0.643}$. The ability to achieve $p_s > 0.5$ has been found to be critical in resource-efficient realizations of linear optical quantum computing and all-photonic quantum repeaters. Yet, the aforesaid value of $p_s > 0.5$ is not known to be the maximum achievable using squeezing, thereby leaving it open whether close-to-$100\%$ efficient BSM might be achievable using squeezing as a resource. In this paper, we report new insights on why squeezing-enhanced BSM achieves $p_s > 0.5$. Using this, we show that the previously-reported ${p_s \approx 0.643}$ at single-mode squeezing strength $r=0.6585$---for unambiguous state discrimination (USD) of all four Bell states---is an experimentally unachievable point result, which drops to $p_s \approx 0.59$ with the slightest change in $r$. We however show that squeezing-induced boosting of $p_s$ with USD operation is still possible over a continuous range of $r$, with an experimentally achievable maximum occurring at $r=0.5774$, achieving ${p_s \approx 0.596}$. Finally, deviating from USD operation, we explore a trade-space between $p_s$, the probability with which the BSM circuit declares a "success", versus the probability of error $p_e$, the probability of an input Bell state being erroneously identified given the circuit declares a success. Since quantum error correction could correct for some $p_e > 0$, this tradeoff may enable better quantum repeater designs by potentially increasing the entanglement generation rates with $p_s$ exceeding what is possible with traditionally-studied USD operation of BSMs.
We study the effect of homodyne detector visibility on the measurement of quadrature squeezing for a spatially multi-mode source of two-mode squeezed light. Sources like optical parametric oscillators (OPO) typically produce squeezing in a single spatial mode because the nonlinear medium is within a mode-selective optical cavity. For such a source, imperfect interference visibility in the homodyne detector couples in additional vacuum noise, which can be accounted for by introducing an equivalent loss term. In a free-space multi-spatial-mode system imperfect homodyne detector visibility can co…
We consider imperfect two-mode bosonic quantum transducers that cannot completely transfer an initial source-system quantum state due to insufficient coupling strength or other non-idealities. We show that such transducers can generically be made perfect by using interference and phase-sensitive amplification. Our approach is based on the realization that a particular kind of imperfect transducer (one which implements a swapped quantum non-demolition (QND) gate) can be made into a perfect one-way transducer using feed-forward and/or injected squeezing. We show that a generic imperfect transduc…
Entanglement has shown promise in enhancing information processing tasks in a sensor network, via distributed quantum sensing protocols. As noise is ubiquitous in sensor networks, error correction schemes based on Gottesman, Kitaev and Preskill (GKP) states are required to enhance the performance, as shown in [New J. Phys. 22, 022001 (2020)] assuming homogeneous noise among sensors and perfect GKP states. Here, we extend the analyses of performance enhancement to finite squeezed GKP states in a heterogeneous noise model. To begin with, we study different concatenation schemes of GKP-two-mode-s…
We present a protocol to generate a large degree of squeezing of a boson (light) field mode strongly coupled to a two-level system in the dispersive regime. Our protocol exploits the strong dispersive coupling to introduce a time dependent frequency change of the boson field. With an appropriately timed sequence of sudden frequency changes, the quantum noise fluctuations in one quadrature of the field can be reduced well below the standard quantum limit, with a correspondingly increased uncertainty in the orthogonal quadrature. Even in the presence of realistic noise and imperfections, the pro…

We report on nonlinear squeezing effects of polarization states of light by harnessing the intrinsic correlations from a polarization-entangled light source and click-counting measurements. Nonlinear Stokes operators are obtained from harnessing the click-counting theory in combination with angular-momentum-type algebras. To quantify quantum effects, theoretical bounds are derived for second- and higher-order moments of nonlinear Stokes operators. The experimental validation of our concept is rendered possible by developing an efficient source, using a spectrally decorrelated type-II phase-mat…
Squeezed states of spin systems are an important entangled resource for quantum technologies, particularly quantum metrology and sensing. Here we consider the generation of spin squeezed states by interacting the spins with a dissipative ancillary system. We show that spin squeezing can be generated in this model by two different mechanisms: one-axis twisting and driven collective relaxation. We can interpolate between the two mechanisms by simply adjusting the detuning between the dissipative ancillary system and the spin system. Interestingly, we find that for both mechanisms, ancillary syst…
We analyze an experimental method for creating interesting nonclassical states by processing the entanglement generated when two large coherent states interact in a cross-Kerr medium. We specifically investigate the effects of loss and noise in every mode of the experiment, as well as the effect of "binning" the post-selection outcomes. Even with these imperfections, we find an optimal set of currently-achievable parameters which would allow a proof-of-principle demonstration of number squeezing in states with large mean photon number. We discuss other useful states which can be generated with…
In this paper, we investigate the error correction of universal Gaussian transformations obtained in the process of continuous-variable quantum computations. We have tried to bring our theoretical studies closer to the actual picture in the experiment. When investigating the error correction procedure, we have considered that both the resource GKP state itself and the entanglement transformation are imperfect. In reality, the GKP state has a finite width associated with the finite degree of squeezing, and the entanglement transformation is performed with error. We have considered a hybrid sche…
Quantum states with nonlinear squeezing are a necessary resource for deterministic implementation of high-order quadrature phase gates that are, in turn, sufficient for advanced quantum information processing. We demonstrate that this class of states can be deterministically prepared by employing a single Kerr gate accompanied by suitable Gaussian processing. The required Kerr coupling depends on the energy of the initial system and can be made arbitrarily small. We also employ numerical simulations to analyze the effects of imperfections and to show to which extent can they be neglected.

Spin squeezing is a form of entanglement that can improve the stability of quantum sensors operating with multiple particles, by inducing inter-particle correlations that redistribute the quantum projection noise. Previous analyses of potential metrological gain when using spin squeezing were performed on theoretically ideal states, without incorporating experimental imperfections or inherent limitations which result in non-unitary quantum state evolution. Here, we show that potential gains in clock stability are substantially reduced when the spin squeezing is non-unitary, and derive analytic…

Noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices are spearheading the second quantum revolution. Of these, quantum annealers are the only ones currently offering real world, commercial applications on as many as 5000 qubits. The size of problems that can be solved by quantum annealers is limited mainly by errors caused by environmental noise and intrinsic imperfections of the processor. We address the issue of intrinsic imperfections with a novel error correction approach, based on machine learning methods. Our approach adjusts the input Hamiltonian to maximize the probability of finding the so…
Quantum metrology enables estimation of optical phase shifts with precision beyond the shot-noise limit. One way to exceed this limit is to use squeezed states, where the quantum noise of one observable is reduced at the expense of increased quantum noise for its complementary partner. Because shot-noise limits the phase sensitivity of all classical states, reduced noise in the average value for the observable being measured allows for improved phase sensitivity. However, additional phase sensitivity can be achieved using phase estimation strategies that account for the full distribution of me…
Backaction-evading (BAE) measurements of a mechanical resonator, by continuously monitoring a single quadrature of motion, can achieve precision below the zero-point uncertainty. When this happens, the measurement leaves the resonator in a quantum squeezed state. The squeezed state so generated is however conditional on the measurement outcomes, while for most applications it is desirable to have a deterministic, i.e., unconditional, squeezed state with the desired properties. In this work we apply feedback control to achieve deterministic manipulation of mechanical squeezing in an optomechani…
Cavity-QED is a promising avenue for the deterministic generation of entangled and spin-squeezed states for quantum metrology. One archetypal scheme generates squeezing via collective one-axis twisting interactions. However, we show that in implementations using optical transitions in long-lived atoms the achievable squeezing is fundamentally limited by collectively enhanced emission into the cavity mode which is generated in parallel with the cavity-mediated spin-spin interactions. We propose an alternative scheme which generates a squeezed state that is protected from collective emission, an…
Violation of Bell inequality is a prominent detection method for quantum correlations present in composite quantum systems, both in finite and infinite dimensions. We investigate the consequence on the violation of local realism based on pseduospin operators when photons are added or subtracted in a single mode or in both the modes of the two-mode squeezed states of light in presence of noise. In the noiseless situation, we show that for addition (subtraction) of photons in a single mode, there is an overall enhancement in the maximal violation, although we observe an interplay between monoton…

Quantum uncertainty of laser light limits the sensitivity of gravitational-wave observatories. In the past 30 years, techniques for squeezing the quantum uncertainty as well as for enhancing the gravitational-wave signal with optical resonators were invented. Resonators, however, have finite linewidths; and the high signal frequencies that are produced during the scientifically highly interesting ring-down of astrophysical compact-binary mergers cannot be resolved today. Here, we propose an optical approach for expanding the detection bandwidth. It uses quantum uncertainty squeezing inside one…

One of the most important tasks in modern quantum science is to coherently control and entangle many-body systems, and to subsequently use these systems to realize powerful quantum technologies such as quantum-enhanced sensors. However, many-body entangled states are difficult to prepare and preserve since internal dynamics and external noise rapidly degrade any useful entanglement. Here, we introduce a protocol that counterintuitively exploits inhomogeneities, a typical source of dephasing in a many-body system, in combination with interactions to generate metrologically useful and robust man…
Measurement feedback is a versatile and powerful tool, although its performance is limited by several practical imperfections resulting from classical components. This paper shows that, for some typical quantum feedback control problems for state preparation (stabilization of a qubit or a qutrit, spin squeezing, and Fock state generation), the classical feedback operation can be replaced by a fully quantum one such that the state autonomously dissipates into the target or a state close to the target. The main common feature of the proposed quantum operation, which is called coherent feedback, …
A continuous-wave (CW) broadband high-level optical quadrature squeezer is essential for high-speed large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computing on a time-domain-multiplexed continuous-variable optical cluster state. CW THz-bandwidth squeezed light can be obtained with a waveguide optical parametric amplifier (OPA); however, the squeezing level have been insufficient for applications of fault-tolerant quantum computation because of degradation of the squeezing level due to their optical losses caused by the structural perturbation and pump-induced phenomena. Here, by using mechanical polishing…
Enhancing the precision of a measurement requires maximizing the information that can be gained about the quantity of interest from probing a system. For optical based measurements, such an enhancement can be achieved through two approaches, increasing the number of photons used to interrogate the system and using quantum states of light to increase the amount of quantum Fisher information gained per photon. Here we consider the use of quantum states of light with a large number of photons, namely the bright single-mode and two-mode squeezed states, that take advantage of both of these approac…
On today's noisy imperfect quantum devices, execution fidelity tends to collapse dramatically for most applications beyond a handful of qubits. It is therefore imperative to employ novel techniques that can boost quantum fidelity in new ways. This paper aims to boost quantum fidelity with Clifford canary circuits by proposing Quancorde: Quantum Canary Ordered Diverse Ensembles, a fundamentally new approach to identifying the correct outcomes of extremely low-fidelity quantum applications. It is based on the key idea of diversity in quantum devices - variations in noise sources, make each (port…
We investigate quantum nonlocality of a single-photon entangled state under feasible measurement techniques consisting of on-off and homodyne detections along with unitary operations of displacement and squeezing. We test for a potential violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality, in which each of the bipartite party has a freedom to choose between 2 measurement settings, each measurement yielding a binary outcome. We find that single-photon quantum nonlocality can be detected when two or less of the 4 total measurements are carried out by homodyne detection. The largest vio…
Estimating transmission or loss is at the heart of spectroscopy. To achieve the ultimate quantum resolution limit, one must use probe states with definite photon number and detectors capable of distinguishing the number of photons impinging thereon. In practice, one can outperform classical limits using two-mode squeezed light, which can be used to herald definite-photon-number probes, but the heralding is not guaranteed to produce the desired probes when there is loss in the heralding arm or its detector is imperfect. We show that this paradigm can be used to simultaneously measure distinct l…
Gravitational wave detectors (GWDs), which have brought about a new era in astronomy, have reached such a level of maturity that further improvement necessitates quantum-noise-evading techniques. Numerous proposals to this end have been discussed in the literature, e.g., invoking frequency-dependent squeezing or replacing the current Michelson interferometer topology by that of the quantum speedmeter. Recently, a proposal based on the linking of a standard interferometer to a negative-mass spin system via entangled light has offered an unintrusive and small-scale new approach to quantum noise …
One of the noise sources that currently limits gravitational wave (GW) detectors comes from the quantum nature of the light causing uncertain amplitude and phase. Phase uncertainty limits the precision of an interferometric measurement. This measurement is also subject to quantum back-action, caused by the radiation pressure force fluctuations produced by the amplitude uncertainty (QRPN). In order to lower this quantum noise, GW detectors plan to use squeezed light injection. In this thesis, I focus on using radiation-pressure-mediated optomechanical (OM) interaction to generate squeezed light…
