It was previously argued that generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) with a positive parameter removes the Chandrasekhar limit. One way to restore the limit is by taking the GUP parameter to be negative. In this work we discuss an alternative method that achieves the same effect: by including a cosmological constant term in the GUP (known as "extended GUP" in the literature). We show that an arbitrarily small but nonzero cosmological constant can restore the Chandrasekhar limit. We also remark that if the extended GUP is correct, then the existence of white dwarfs gives an upper bound for the cosmological constant, which -- while still large compared to observation -- is approximately 86 orders of magnitude smaller than the natural scale.
We modify the Chandrasekhar model of white dwarfs by introducing novel momentum-space features that characterize the analysis of some quantum-spacetime scenarios. We find that the rather standard ultraviolet effects of spacetime quantization can only be significant in a regime where the Chandrasekhar model anyway lacks any contact with observations. But a new class of quantum-spacetime effects inspired by the mechanism of "ultraviolet/infrared mixing" could be relevant for white dwarfs whose mass is roughly half the mass of the Sun, some of which are described in the literature as "strange whi…
Various recent theoretical investigations suggest that gravitational collapse of white dwarfs is withheld for arbitrarily high masses if the equation of state is described by the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP). There have been a few attempts to restore the Chandrasekhar limit but they are found to be inadequate from different perspectives and some of them led to unphysical mass-radius relations. In this paper, we rigorously resolve this problem by analyzing the dynamical instability in general relativity. We confirm the existence of Chandrasekhar's limit as well as stable mass-radius …
The indirect evidence for at least a dozen massive white dwarfs violating the Chandrasekhar mass-limit is considered to be one of the wonderful discoveries in astronomy for more than a decade. Researchers have already proposed a diverse amount of models to explain this astounding phenomenon. However, each of these models always carries some drawbacks. On the other hand, noncommutative geometry is one of the best replicas of quantum gravity, which is yet to be proved from observations. Madore introduced the idea of a fuzzy sphere to describe a formalism of noncommutative geometry. This article …
The topic of magnetized super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs is in the limelight, particularly in the last few years, since our proposal of their existence. By full-scale general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) numerical analysis, we confirm in this work the existence of stable, highly magnetized, significantly super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs with mass more than 3 solar mass. While a poloidal field geometry renders the white dwarfs oblate, a toroidal field makes them prolate retaining an overall quasi-spherical shape, as speculated in our earlier work. These white dwarfs are expected to …
Chandrasekhar made the startling discovery about nine decades back that the mass of compact object white dwarf has a limiting value, once nuclear fusion reactions stop therein. This is the Chandrasekhar mass-limit, which is $\sim1.4M_\odot$ for a non-rotating non-magnetized white dwarf. On approaching this limiting mass, a white dwarf is believed to spark off with an explosion called type Ia supernova, which is considered to be a standard candle. However, observations of several over-luminous, peculiar type Ia supernovae indicate that the Chandrasekhar mass-limit to be significantly larger. By…
We show that the upper bound for the central magnetic field of a super-Chandrasekhar white dwarf calculated by Nityananda and Konar [Phys. Rev. D 89, 103017 (2014)] is completely erroneous. This in turn strengthens the argument in favor of the stability of the recently proposed magnetized super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs. We also point out several other numerical errors in their work. Overall we conclude, based on our calculations, that the arguments put forth by Nityananda and Konar are fallacious and misleading.
We address the issue of stability of recently proposed significantly super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs. We present stable solutions of magnetostatic equilibrium models for super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs pertaining to various magnetic field profiles. This has been obtained by self-consistently including the effects of the magnetic pressure gradient and total magnetic density in a general relativistic framework. We estimate that the maximum stable mass of magnetized white dwarfs could be more than 3 solar mass. This is very useful to explain peculiar, overluminous type Ia supernovae which do no…
We investigate the Chandrasekhar mass limit for white dwarfs in various models of $f(R)$ gravity. Two equations of state for stellar matter are used: simple relativistic polytropic equation with polytropic index $n=3$ and the realistic Chandrasekhar equation of state. For calculations it is convenient to use the equivalent scalar-tensor theory in the Einstein frame and then to return in the Jordan frame picture. For white dwarfs we can neglect terms containing relativistic effects from General Relativity and we consider the reduced system of equations. Its solution for any model of $f(R)=R+βR^…
The existence of possible massive white dwarfs more than the Chandrasekhar limit ($1.45M_{\odot }$, in which $M_{\odot }$ is mass of the sun) is a challenging topic. In this regard and motivated by the important effect of massive graviton on the structure of white dwarfs we study the white dwarfs in Vegh's massive gravity which is known as one of theories of de Rham, Gabadadze and Tolley (dRGT) like massive gravity. First, we consider the modified Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation in this theory of massive gravity and solve it numerically by using the Chandrasekhar's equation of state. Our r…
This is a concise review, addressed to undergraduate students, of S. Chandrasekhar's oeuvre in astrophysics, ranging from his early studies on white dwarfs using relativistic quantum statistics to topics as diverse as dynamical friction, negative hydrogen ion, fluid dynamical instabilities, black holes and gravitational waves. The exposition is based on simple physical explanations in the context of observational astronomy. Black holes and their role as central engines of active, compact, high energy sources have been discussed.
Since 2012, we have initiated developing systematically the simplistic to rigorous models to prove that highly super-Chandrasekhar, as well as highly sub-Chandrasekhar, limiting mass white dwarfs are possible to exist. We show that the mass of highly magnetized or modified Einstein's gravity induced white dwarfs could be significantly super-Chandrasekhar and such white dwarfs could altogether have a different mass-limit. On the other hand, type Ia supernovae (SNeIa), a key to unravel the evolutionary history of the universe, are believed to be triggered in white dwarfs having mass close to the…
We consider a relativistic, degenerate, electron gas under the influence of a strong magnetic field, which describes magnetized white dwarfs. Landau quantization changes the density of states available to the electrons, thus modifying the underlying equation of state. We obtain the mass-radius relations for such white dwarfs and show that it is possible to have magnetized white dwarfs with a mass significantly greater than the Chandrasekhar limit in the range 2.3 - 2.6 M_sun. Recent observations of peculiar type Ia supernovae - SN 2006gz, SN 2007if, SN 2009dc, SN 2003fg - seem to suggest super…
Type Ia supernovae, sparked off by exploding white dwarfs of mass close to Chandrasekhar limit, play the key role to understand the expansion rate of universe. However, recent observations of several peculiar type Ia supernovae argue for its progenitor mass to be significantly super-Chandrasekhar. We show that strongly magnetized white dwarfs not only can violate the Chandrasekhar mass limit significantly, but exhibit a different mass limit. We establish from foundational level that the generic mass limit of white dwarfs is 2.58 solar mass. This explains the origin of over-luminous peculiar ty…
Our consistent effort to unravel the mystery of super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs (WDs), by exploiting the potential of magnetic fields, has brought this topic considerable attention. This is also evident from the recent surge in the corresponding literature. In the present work, by means of full-scale general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) numerical analysis, we confirm the existence of stable, highly magnetized, significantly super-Chandrasekhar WDs having mass exceeding 3 solar mass. We have explored various possible field configurations, namely, poloidal, toroidal and mixed, by se…
Here we extend the exploration of significantly super-Chandrasekhar magnetised white dwarfs by numerically computing axisymmetric stationary equilibria of differentially rotating magnetised polytropic compact stars in general relativity (GR), within the ideal magnetohydrodynamic regime. We use a general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) framework that describes rotating and magnetised axisymmetric white dwarfs, choosing appropriate rotation laws and magnetic field profiles (toroidal and poloidal). The numerical procedure for finding solutions in this framework uses the 3+1 formalism of …
We consider a relativistic, degenerate, electron gas under the influence of a strong magnetic field, which describes magnetized white dwarfs. Landau quantization changes the density of states available to the electrons, thus modifying the underlying equation of state. In the presence of very strong magnetic fields a maximum of either one, two or three Landau level(s) is/are occupied. We obtain the mass-radius relations for such white dwarfs and their detailed investigation leads us to propose the existence of white dwarfs having a mass ~2.3M_Sun, which overwhelmingly exceeds the Chandrasekhar …
The discovery of the existence of an upper bound on the mass of a white dwarf star is considered as one of the finest of twentieth century astrophysics. On approaching this limiting mass of $1.4M_\odot$, known as the Chandrasekhar mass-limit, a white dwarf is believed to spark of with an explosion called type Ia supernova, which is considered to be a standard candle. But since the last decade, observations of several over-luminous, peculiar type Ia supernovae indicate that the Chandrasekhar-limit be significantly larger. By postulating noncommutativity between the components of momentum variab…
The idea of possible modification to gravity theory, whether it is in the Newtonian or general relativistic premises, is there for quite sometime. Based on it, astrophysical and cosmological problems are targeted to solve. But none of the Newtonian theories of modification has been performed from the first principle. Here, we modify Poisson's equation and propose two possible ways to modify the law gravitation which, however, reduces to Newton's law far away from the center of source. Based on these modified Newton's laws, we attempt to solve problems lying with white dwarfs. There are observa…
In about last couple of decades, the inference of the violation of the Chandrasekhar mass-limit of white dwarfs from indirect observation is probably a revolutionary discovery in astronomy. Various researchers have already proposed different theories to explain this interesting phenomenon. However, such massive white dwarfs usually possess very little luminosity, and hence they, so far, cannot be detected directly by any observations. We have already proposed that the continuous gravitational wave may be one of the probes to detect them directly, and in the future, various space-based detector…
Recently, some over-luminous Ia supernovaes are found, suggesting that their progenitors are white dwarfs more massive than the Chandrasekhar limit, which perhaps result from ultra-strong magnetic field inside the white dwarfs. We present an equation of state, explicitly magnetic-dependent and analytically practicable, and observe that the change of equation of states due to magnetic field waning along radium will so significantly influence the configuration of a white dwarf as that its density does not monotonically decrease, but goes down at first, re-peaks near the crust and falls off again…
We explore the effect of modification to Einstein's gravity in white dwarfs for the first time in the literature, to the best of our knowledge. This leads to significantly sub- and super-Chandrasekhar limiting masses of white dwarfs, determined by a single model parameter. On the other hand, type Ia supernovae (SNeIa), a key to unravel the evolutionary history of the universe, are believed to be triggered in white dwarfs having mass close to the Chandrasekhar limit. However, observations of several peculiar, under- and over-luminous SNeIa argue for exploding masses widely different from this l…
Noncommutative geometry is one of the quantum gravity theories, which various researchers have been using to describe different physical and astrophysical systems. However, so far, no direct observations can justify its existence, and this theory remains a hypothesis. On the other hand, over the past two decades, more than a dozen over-luminous type Ia supernovae have been observed, which indirectly predict that they originate from white dwarfs with super-Chandrasekhar masses $2.1-2.8 \rm\,M_\odot$. In this article, we discuss that considering white dwarfs as squashed fuzzy spheres, a class of…
The evolution of the remnant of the merger of two white dwarfs is still an open problem. Furthermore, few studies have addressed the case in which the remnant is a magnetic white dwarf with a mass larger than the Chandrasekhar limiting mass. Angular momentum losses might bring the remnant of the merger to the physical conditions suitable for developing a thermonuclear explosion. Alternatively, the remnant may be prone to gravitational or rotational instabilities, depending on the initial conditions reached after the coalescence. Dipole magnetic braking is one of the mechanisms that can drive s…
While computing the Fermi degeneracy pressure of electrons in a white dwarf star within the framework of hydrostatic equilibrium, we depart from the extant practice of treating the electrons as a free fermion gas, by including the effect of the star's self-gravity as an effective gravitational potential. By the star's self gravity, we mean the gravitational field due to the star itself, resulting from the mass of its constituent atoms, the mass of the atom being effectively the mass of the proton. Modifying the free particle Hamiltonian with this effective potential, we employ first order quan…
The effect of a generalized uncertainty principle on the structure of an ideal white dwarf star is investigated. The equation describing the equilibrium configuration of the star is a generalized form of the Lane-Emden equation. It is proved that the star always has a finite size. It is then argued that the maximum mass of such an ideal white dwarf tends to infinity, as opposed to the conventional case where it has a finite value.
Observations of several peculiar, under- and over-luminous type Ia supernovae (SNeIa) argue for exploding masses widely different from the Chandrasekhar-limit. We explore the modification to Einstein's gravity in white dwarfs for the first time in the literature, which shows that depending on the (density dependent) modified gravity parameter $α$, chosen for the present purpose of representation, limiting mass of white dwarfs could be significantly sub- as well as super-Chandrasekhar. Hence, this unifies the apparently disjoint classes of SNeIa, establishing the importance of modified Einstein…
We establish the importance of modified Einstein's gravity (MG) in white dwarfs (WDs) for the first time in the literature. We show that MG leads to significantly sub- and super-Chandrasekhar limiting mass WDs, depending on a single model parameter. However, conventional WDs on approaching Chandrasekhar's limit are expected to trigger type Ia supernovae (SNeIa), a key to unravel the evolutionary history of the universe. Nevertheless, observations of several peculiar, under- and over-luminous SNeIa argue for the limiting mass widely different from Chandrasekhar's limit. Explosions of MG induced…
Is the Chandrasekhar mass limit for white dwarfs (WDs) set in stone? Not anymore -- recent observations of over-luminous, peculiar type Ia supernovae can be explained if significantly super-Chandrasekhar WDs exist as their progenitors, thus barring them to be used as cosmic distance indicators. However, there is no estimate of a mass limit for these super-Chandrasekhar WD candidates yet. Can they be arbitrarily large? In fact, the answer is no! We arrive at this revelation by exploiting the flux freezing theorem in observed, accreting, magnetized WDs, which brings in Landau quantization of the…
Type Ia supernovae (SNeIa), used as one of the standard candles in astrophysics, are believed to form when the mass of the white dwarf approaches Chandrasekhar mass limit. However, observations in last few decades detected some peculiar SNeIa, which are predicted to be originating from white dwarfs of mass much less than the Chandrasekhar mass limit or much higher than it. Although the unification of these two sub-classes of SNeIa was attempted earlier by our group, in this work, we, for the first time, explain this phenomenon in terms of just one property of the white dwarf which is its centr…
After the prediction of many sub- and super-Chandrasekhar (at least a dozen for the latter) limiting mass white dwarfs, hence apparently peculiar class of white dwarfs, from the observations of luminosity of type Ia supernovae, researchers have proposed various models to explain these two classes of white dwarfs separately. We earlier showed that these two peculiar classes of white dwarfs, along with the regular white dwarfs, can be explained by a single form of the f(R) gravity, whose effect is significant only in the high-density regime, and it almost vanishes in the low-density regime. Howe…
In recent years a number of white dwarfs has been observed with very high surface magnetic fields. We can expect that the magnetic field in the core of these stars would be much higher (~ 10^{14} G). In this paper, we analytically study the effect of high magnetic field on relativistic cold electron, and hence its effect on the stability and the mass-radius relation of a magnetic white dwarf. In strong magnetic fields, the equation of state of the Fermi gas is modified and Landau quantization comes into play. For relatively very high magnetic fields (with respect to the energy density of matte…

A simple cooling model of white dwarf stars is re-analyzed in Palatini $f(R)$ gravity. Modified gravity affects the white dwarf structures and consequently their ages. We find that the resulting super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs need more time to cool down than sub-Chandrasekhar ones, or when compared to the Newtonian models.
Recent observations of several peculiar over- and under-luminous type Ia supernovae infer indirect evidence for the violation of the Chandrasekhar mass-limit by suggesting the existence of super- and sub-Chandrasekhar limiting mass white dwarfs. In an attempt to explain these phenomena in the context of general relativistic extensions, we study these objects in Palatini $f(R)$ gravity. We obtain the super- and sub-Chandrasekhar limiting masses as well as the dynamical instability criteria for white dwarfs in the given gravitational theory. We further demonstrate that the conventional positivit…
A few questions related to white dwarfs' physics is posed. It seems that the modified gravity framework can be a good starting point to provide alternative explanations to cooling processes, their age determination, and Chandrasekhar mass limits. Moreover, we have also obtained the Chandrasekhar limit coming from Palatini $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity provided by a simple Lane-Emden model.
Recent evidence of super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs (WDs), from the observations of over-luminous type Ia supernovae (SNeIa), has been a great astrophysical discovery. However, no such massive WDs have so far been observed directly as their luminosities are generally quite low. Hence it immediately raises the question of whether there is any possibility of detecting them directly. The search for super-Chandrasekhar WDs is very important as SNeIa are used as standard candles in cosmology. In this article, we show that continuous gravitational wave can allow us to detect such super-Chandrasekhar…
This work is motivated by the sign problem in a logarithmic parameter of black hole entropy and the existing more massive white dwarfs than the Chandrasekhar mass limit. We examine the quadratic, linear, and linear-quadratic generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) models within the virtue of recent masses and radii of white dwarfs. We consider the modification generated by introducing the minimal length proposal on the degenerate Fermi gas equation of state (EOS) and on the hydrostatic equation. For the latter, we applied Verlinde's proposal regarding entropic gravity to derived the quantum co…
The usual generalized uncertainty principle will lead to a divergent mass limit of white dwarf, and this divergence should be prevented for both scenarios including positive and negative parameters of generalized uncertainty principle. Although it has been shown that negative parameter can directly restore the mass limit, the underlying reason is not given to explain why the negative sign appears under the condition of white dwarf. In order to solve this problem, we derive a field-dependent parameter expression whose sign can change depending on the species of spin fields. Besides, we find tha…
Newtonian gravity predicts the existence of white dwarfs with masses far exceeding the Chandrasekhar limit when the equation of state of the degenerate electron gas incorporates the effect of quantum spacetime fluctuations (via a modified dispersion relation) even when the strength of the fluctuations is taken to be very small. In this paper, we show that this Newtonian "super-stability" does not hold true when the gravity is treated in the general relativistic framework. Employing dynamical instability analysis, we find that the Chandrasekhar limit can be reassured even for a range of high st…
Recently, several white dwarfs have been proposed with masses significantly above the Chandrasekhar limit, known as Super-Chandrasekhar White Dwarfs, to account for the overluminous Type Ia supernovae. In the present work, Equation of State of a completely degenerate relativistic electron gas in magnetic field based on Landau quantization of charged particles in a magnetic field is developed. The mass-radius relations for magnetized White Dwarfs are obtained by solving the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations. The effects of the magnetic energy density and pressure contributed by a density-dep…
Over the past couple of decades, researchers have predicted more than a dozen super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs from the detections of over-luminous type Ia supernovae. It turns out that magnetic fields and rotation can explain such massive white dwarfs. If these rotating magnetized white dwarfs follow specific conditions, they can efficiently emit continuous gravitational waves and various futuristic detectors, viz. LISA, BBO, DECIGO, and ALIA can detect such gravitational waves with a significant signal-to-noise ratio. Moreover, we discuss various timescales over which these white dwarfs can …
The electromagnetic interaction alters the Chandrasekhar mass limit by a factor which depends, as computed in the literature, on the atomic number of the positively charged nuclei present within the degenerate matter. Unfortunately, the methods employed for such computations break Lorentz invariance ab initio. By employing the methods of finite temperature relativistic quantum field theory, we show that in the leading order, the effect of electromagnetic interaction reduces the Chandrasekhar mass limit for non-general-relativistic, spherically symmetric white dwarfs by a universal factor of $(…

The runaway collapse phase of a small dark matter cluster inside a white dwarf star encompasses a reversible stage, where heat can be transferred back and forth between nuclear and dark matter. Induced nuclear burning phases are stable and early carbon depletion undermines previous claims of type Ia supernova ignition. Instead, mini black holes are formed at the center of the star that either evaporate or accrete stellar material until a macroscopic sub-Chandrasekhar-mass black hole is formed. In the latter case, a 0.1 to 1 second lasting electromagnetic transient signal can be detected upon e…
In recent years, the idea of sub- and super-Chandrasekhar limiting mass white dwarfs (WDs), which are potential candidates to produce under- and over-luminous type Ia supernovae, respectively, has been a key interest in the scientific community. Although researchers have proposed different models to explain these peculiar objects, modified theories of Einstein's gravity, particularly $f(R)$ gravity with $R$ being the scalar curvature, seems to be one of the finest choices to explain both the regimes of these peculiar WDs. It was already shown that considering higher-order corrections to the St…
Modified dispersion relations from effective field theory are shown to alter the Chandrasekhar mass limit. At exceptionally high densities, the modifications affect the pressure of a degenerate electron gas and can increase or decrease the mass limit, depending on the sign of the modifications. These changes to the mass limit are unlikely to be relevant for the astrophysics of white dwarf or neutron stars due to well-known dynamical instabilities that occur at lower densities. Generalizations to frameworks other than effective field theory are discussed.
Based on astrophysical constraints derived from Chandrasekhar's mass limit for white-dwarfs, we study the effects of the model on the parameters of unparticle-inspired gravity, on scales $Λ_U > 1 \; TeV$ and $d_U \approx 1$.
The Chandrasekhar limit for white dwarfs has been confirmed by many astrophysical observations. However, how to obtain it theoretically in models which rely on other-than-Heisenberg's uncertainty principles, which are predicted by some quantum gravity theories, is not a trivial task. In this manuscript, we will derive the Chandrasekhar mass assuming an uncertainty relation proposed in the framework of Doubly Special Relativity, exhibiting both a minimal length and a maximum momentum. We will show how to re-obtain an asymptotically vanishing radius for the star in the limiting subcase of the He…
The equation of state of the electron degenerate gas in a white dwarf is usually treated by employing the ideal dispersion relation. However, the effect of quantum gravity is expected to be inevitably present and when this effect is considered through a non-commutative formulation, the dispersion relation undergoes a substantial modification. In this paper, we take such a modified dispersion relation and find the corresponding equation of state for the degenerate electron gas in white dwarfs. Hence we solve the equation of hydrostatic equilibrium and find that this leads to the possibility of …
In this work, we investigate the equilibrium configurations of massive white dwarfs (MWD) in the context of modified gravity, namely $f(R,L_m)$ gravity, where $R$ stands for the Ricci scalar and $L_m$ is the Lagrangian matter density. We focused on the specific case $f(R,L_m) = R/2 + L_m + σRL_m$, i.e., we have considered a non-minimal coupling between the gravity field and the matter field, with $σ$ being the coupling constant. For the first time, the theory is applied to white dwarfs, in particular to study massive white dwarfs, which is a topic of great interest in the last years. The equil…
Dark matter is believed to be a major component of our universe. In this paper we propose a new mechanism based on dark matter inspired super-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf to explain the recent observation of super luminous type Ia supernovae explosions. Our calculation shows when a white dwarf accretes enough dark matter, due to the Pauli exclusive principle between fermionic dark matter particles, the mass of corresponding dark white dwarf (which means the white dwarf mixed with dark matters) can significantly exceeds the Chandrasekhar limit. Moreover, we investigate some physical observabl…
It is often argued that quantum gravitational correction to the Heisenberg's uncertainty principle leads to, among other things, a black hole remnant with finite temperature. However, such a generalized uncertainty principle also seemingly removes the Chandrasekhar limit, i.e., it permits white dwarfs to be arbitrarily large, which is at odds with astrophysical observations. We show that this problem can be resolved if the parameter in the generalized uncertainty principle is negative. We also discuss the Planck scale physics of such a model.
Static solutions of white dwarfs with spherical symmetry and local anisotropy are studied in the post-Newtonian approximation. It is argued that the condition for equilibrium must be that the total energy is a minimum for given baryon number and the question whether there is local isotropy or anisotropy inside the star should follow from that condition, rather than be postulated "a priori". It is shown show that, in post-Newtonian gravity, there are stable configurations with local anisotropy for masses above the Chandrasekhar limit.
Over the last couple of decades, there are direct and indirect evidences for massive compact objects than their conventional counterparts. A couple of such examples are super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs and massive neutron stars. The observations of more than a dozen peculiar over-luminous type Ia supernovae predict their origins from super-Chandrasekhar white dwarf progenitors. On the other hand, recent gravitational wave detection and some pulsar observations argue for massive neutron stars, lying in the famous mass-gap between lowest astrophysical black hole and conventional highest neutron …
