Lithium niobate(LN) microresonator is a key component in photonic integrated circuits. An intriguing phenomenon was observed that the quality factor for specific modes of the resonator can be further improved by femtosecond laser irradiation. The high repetition laser pulses scatters into the cavity by forming a defect on the surface and is confined in the edge. A localized coupled laser refining process will then repair the lattice disorders and tiny burrs on the periphery. The intrinsic quality factor of a measured mode can be promoted from 2.17$\times$10$^5$ to 1.84$\times$10$^6$ indicating one order of magnitude improvement. This highly controllable method has its own unique advantages in improving the quality of an integrated resonator which opens new prospects for single component engineering of LN photonic integrated circuits.
Simultaneous measurements of hard X-ray by a Geiger counter and audible sound (10 Hz-20kHz) by a microphone from a thin water film in air were carried out under intense single and double pulse irradiations of femtosecond laser (35 fs, 800 nm, 1 kHz). Emission profiles of X-ray and sound under the single pulse irradiation by changing the water film position along the laser incident direction (Z-axis) show the same peak positions with a broader emission in sound (403μm at FWHM) than in X-ray (37μm). Under the double pulse irradiation condition with the time delay at 0 ps and 4.6 ns, it was clear…
Diamond has attracted great interest as a quantum technology platform thanks to its optically active nitrogen vacancy center (NV). The NV's ground state spin can be read out optically exhibiting long spin coherence times of about 1 ms even at ambient temperatures. In addition, the energy levels of the NV are sensitive to external fields. These properties make NVs attractive as a scalable platform for efficient nanoscale resolution sensing based on electron spins and for quantum information systems. Diamond photonics enhances optical interaction with NVs, beneficial for both quantum sensing and…
Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSSs) on various materials have been extensively investigated because of their wide applications. The combination of different materials allows for greater freedom in tailoring their functions and achieving responses not possible in a homogeneous material. By utilizing a femtosecond (fs) laser to irradiate the Fe-doped Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone (PVP) composite film, highly regular ultrafine nanogratings (U-nanogratings) with a period as small as 35.0 ($\pm$ 2.0) nm can be self-organized on the surface with extremely high efficiency. The period of the U-…
It is well known that when the fused silica is irradiated with focused femtosecond laser beams, space selective chemical etching can be achieved. The etching rate depends sensitively on the polarization of the laser. Surprisingly, we observe that by chirping the Fourier-transform-limited femtosecond laser pulses to picosecond pulses, the polarization dependence of the etching rate disappears, whereas an efficient etching rate can still be maintained. Observation with a scanning electron microscope reveals that the chirped pulses can induce interconnected nanocracks in the irradiated areas whic…
We report on the experimental observation of selective delamination of semi-transparent materials on the example of yttria-stabilized zirconia ceramics upon femtosecond laser processing of its surface with low numerical aperture lens. The delamination of a ceramic layer of dozens of micrometers takes place as a by-side effect of surface processing and is observed above the surface ablation threshold. The onset of delamination (delamination threshold) depends on the degree of overlap of the irradiation spots from consecutive laser pulses upon beam scanning over material surface. Analysis of the…
Exposure of metal surfaces to multiple ultrashort laser pulses under certain conditions leads to the formation of well-defined periodic surface structures. We show how the period of such structures in steel can be tuned over a wide range by controlling the complex interaction mechanisms triggered in the material. Amongst the different irradiation parameters that influence the properties of the induced structures, the angle of incidence of the laser beam occupies a prominent role. We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of this angle dependence in steel upon irradiation with la…
Irradiation of solids with ultrashort pulses and laser processing in the mid-Infrared (mid-IR) spectral region is a yet predominantly unexplored field with a large potential for a wide range of applications. In this work, laser driven physical phenomena associated with processes following irradiation of fused silica (SiO2) with ultrashort laser pulses in the mid-IR region are investigated in detail. A multiscale modelling approach is performed that correlates conditions for formation of perpendicular or parallel to the laser polarisation low spatial frequency periodic surface structures for lo…
A comparative study is performed to explore the periodic structure formation upon intense femtosecond pulsed irradiation of dielectrics with radially and azimuthally polarised beams. Laser conditions have been selected appropriately to produce excited carriers with densities below the optical breakdown threshold in order to highlight the role of phase transitions in surface modification mechanisms. The frequency of the laser induced structures is calculated based on a theoretical model that comprises estimation of electron density excitation, heat transfer, relaxation processes, and hydrodynam…
Electronic devices are progressively fabricated on flexible substrates allowing new fields of applications. A maskless and very flexible structuring process is offered by ablation using ultra-short pulse laser irradiation. Usually, certain areas of a functional thin film coating are locally removed to yield the needed device structures. Micro laser patterning quality is not only influenced by the beam properties (beam profile, fluence) but also by pulse overlap, scan repetitions and many other factors such as substrate and coating material. This makes process parameter optimization a challengi…
Ultra-fast femtosecond (fs) lasers provide a unique technological opportunity to precisely and efficiently micromachine materials with minimal thermal damage owing to the reduced heat transfer into the bulk of the work material offered by short pulse duration, high laser intensity and focused optical energy delivered on a timescale shorter than the rate of thermal diffusion into the surrounding area of a beam foci. There is an increasing demand to further develop the fs machining technology to improve the machining quality, minimize the total machining time and increase the flexibility of mach…
We present a new approach to femtosecond direct laser writing lithography to pattern nanocavities in ferromagnetic thin films. To demonstrate the concept we irradiated 300~nm thin nickel films by single intense femtosecond laser pulses through the glass substrate and created complex surface landscapes at the nickel-air interface. Using a fluence above the ablation threshold the process is destructive and irradiation leads to the formation of 200~nm thin flakes of nickel around the ablation crater as seen by electron microscopy. By progressively lowering the peak laser fluence, slightly below t…
Ultrafast, femtosecond laser pulse interaction with dielectric materials has shown them to have significantly higher laser fluence threshold requirements, as compared to metals and semiconductors, for laser material modification, such as laser ablation. Examples of dielectrics are crystalline materials such as quartz and sapphire, and amorphous glasses. The interaction between femtosecond laser pulses, at a wavelength with negligible linear absorption, and a dielectric has been found to be weak, and multiple pulse irradiation is therefore typically used in order to see significant and quantifi…
In-volume ultrafast laser direct writing of silicon is generally limited by strong nonlinear propagation effects preventing the initiation of modifications. By employing a triple-optimization procedure in the spectral, temporal and spatial domains, we demonstrate that modifications can be repeatably produced inside silicon. Our approach relies on irradiation at $\approx 2$-$μ$m wavelength with temporally-distorted femtosecond pulses. These pulses are focused in a way that spherical aberrations of different origins counterbalance, as predicted by point spread function analyses and in good agree…

Laser-plasma accelerators can produce ultra short electron bunches in the femtosecond to picosecond duration range, resulting in high peak dose rates in comparison with clinical accelerators. This peculiar characteristic motivates their application to radiation biology studies to elucidate the effect of the high peak dose rate on the biological response of living cells, which is still being debated. Electron beams driven by kHz laser systems may represent an attractive option for such applications, since the high repetition rate can boost the mean dose rate and improve the stability of the del…
