We discuss a method to transform any optical field, with finite frequency bandwidth, into a shape invariant beam with transverse scaling, dependent on the propagation distance. The method consists in modulating the field with a quadratic phase of appropriate curvature radius. As a particular application, we employ the method to extend the existence region of a finite non-diffracting field to an unbounded domain.
Achieving large bandwidth at strong mode conversion strengths is a central problem in few-mode optical waveguides. The most uncomplicated modification of a standard mode-converting grating is to incorporate a single extra gap. Such simple design has not been applied yet for broadening conversion spectrum between core modes of any few-mode waveguide e.g. few-mode fiber, possibly due to lacking knowledge of critical parameter control: (a) phase shift value at resonance wavelength, and (b) deterministic method for placement of the phase shift(s) accommodating the change in waveguide properties du…
Frequency conversion of light can be dramatically enhanced using high quality factor ($Q$-factor) cavities. Unfortunately, the achievable conversion efficiencies and conversion bandwidths are fundamentally limited by the time-bandwidth limit of the cavity, restricting their use in frequency conversion of ultrashort pulses. Here, we propose and numerically demonstrate sum-frequency generation based frequency conversion using a metasurface-based cavity configuration that could overcome this limitation. The proposed experimental configuration takes use of the spatially dispersive responses of per…
We designed, fabricated and tested an optical hybrid that supports an octave of bandwidth (900-1800 nm) and below 4-dB insertion loss using multiplane light conversion. Measured phase errors are below 3-degree across a measurement bandwidth of 390 nm.
The infrared imaging detection is an important and promising technology having wide applications. In this work, we report on the frequency up-conversion detection of an image based on sum frequency generation in a nonlinear crystal with a flat-top beam acting as the pump instead of a Gaussian beam, the up-converted image at 525 nm falls in the sensitive band of visible detectors and human eyes. Both theoretical simulations and the experimental results clearly demonstrate that using a flat-top beam as a pump can improve the fidelity of an image after the up-conversion compared with a Gaussian p…
The two-color strong-field mixing in gas medium is a widely-used approach to generate bright broadband terahertz (THz) radiation. Here, we present a new and counterintuitive method to promote THz performance in two-color scheme. Beyond our knowledge that the maximum THz generation occurs with two-color foci overlapped, we found that, when the foci of two-color beams are noticeably separated along the propagation axis resulting in cascading plasmas, the THz conversion efficiency is surged by one order of magnitude and the bandwidth is stretched by more than 2 times, achieving $10^{-3}$ conversi…
Full Poincaré (FP) beams, a special class of fully correlated beams generated through the coaxial superposition of a Laguerre-Gauss and fundamental Gaussian modes of orthogonal polarizations, contain all possible polarization states on the surface of the Poincaré sphere in a single beam. While the presence of all unconventional polarization states makes the FP beams useful for various applications, the dependence of the refractive index on the polarization restricts the efficient generation of FP beams across the electromagnetic spectrum through nonlinear frequency processes. To avoid such dif…
We demonstrate wavelength conversion of QAM signals including 32GBd QPSK and 10GBd 16QAM in a 50cm long high index doped glass spiral waveguide. The quality of the generated idlers over a 10nm bandwidth is sufficient to achieve a BER performance below the HD FEC threshold (less than 3.8 x 10-3), with an OSNR penalty of less than 0.3 dB compared to the original signal. Our results confirm that this is a promising platform for nonlinear optical signal processing, a result of both very low linear propagation loss (less than 0.07 dB/cm) and the large material bandgap that ensures negligible nonlin…
We develop the formal approach to the angular spectrum transfer in parametric down-conversion that allows pumping with a structured beam. The scheme is based on an entangled photon source pumped by a laser beam structured with a vector-vortex polarization profile. This creates a two-photon quantum state exhibiting polarization-dependent transverse correlations that can be accessed through coincidence measurements on the spatially separated photons. The calculated correlations are shown to present a spin-orbit profile typical of vector beams, however, distributed on separate measurement regions…
With the advances in on-chip photonic integrated circuits, compact and wide bandwidth mode converters are required for mode division multiplexing - demultiplexing and various other applications. We propose the design and theory for a highly compact, easy to fabricate mode converter that converts TE0 to TE1 and vice versa. The proposed design uses an arc bend waveguide structure based on Silicon on Insulator (SOI) platform and offers high mode conversion efficiency, low insertion loss, and large bandwidth of operation. We use coupled-mode theory to analyse the mode conversion within the structu…
Abruptly autofocusing waves and associated ring-Airy (RA) beams are attracting increasing interest owing to their fascinating properties such as their ability of abruptly autofocusing to small F-number. Optical frequency conversion via nonlinear interactions can further expand their applications to new area, yet are rarely studied. In this work, we report the frequency conversion of RA beams via sum-frequency generation using perfect flattop and common Gauss beams as the pump beams. The nonlinear transformation of the spatial complex amplitude of the signal and associated influences on autofoc…
Vector beams (VBs) are widely investigated for its special intensity and polarization distributions, which is useful for optical micromanipulation, optical micro-fabrication, optical communication, and single molecule imaging. To date, it is still a challenge to realize nonlinear frequency conversion (NFC) and manipulation of such VBs because of the polarization sensitivity in most of nonlinear processes. Here, we report an experimental realization of NFC and manipulation of VBs which can be used to expand the available frequency band. The main idea of our scheme is to introduce a Sagnac loop …
We report on generation and control of tunable, broad orbital angular momentum (OAM) spectrum of a vortex beam. Using two spiral phase plates (SPPs), we have converted the Gaussian beam of Yb-fiber femtosecond laser at 1064 nm into optical vortices of orders, l=1-6, with conversion efficiency >95%. By adjusting the transverse shift of the SPPs with respect to the incident Gaussian beam axis, we have transformed the symmetric (intensity distribution) optical vortex of order, l, into an asymmetric vortex beam of broad OAM spectrum of orders, l, l-1, l-2,..,0. While the position of the SPPs deter…
In this work, we investigate the properties of four-wave mixing Bragg scattering in a configuration that employs orthogonally polarized pumps in a birefringent waveguide. This configuration enables a large signal conversion bandwidth, and allows strongly unidirectional frequency conversion as undesired Bragg-scattering processes are suppressed by waveguide birefringence. Moreover, we show that this form of four-wave mixing Bragg scattering preserves the (arbitrary) signal pulse shape, even when driven by pulsed pumps.
Phase-matched nonlinear processes exhibit a tradeoff between the conversion efficiency and the acceptance bandwidth. Adiabatic nonlinear processes, in which the phase mismatch varies slowly along the interaction length, enable us to overcome this tradeoff, allowing an efficient frequency conversion with broad spectral and thermal bandwidths. Until now, the variation in the phase mismatch condition was mainly based on quasi-phase matching in ferroelectric crystals. However, this solution is limited to low power sources. Here, instead, we study the adiabatic second harmonic in birefringently pha…
We present a quantum optics approach for describing stimulated parametric down conversion in the two type-I crystal "sandwich" configuration, which allows for parametric interaction of vector vortex beams. We analyze the conditions for which phase conjugation of the seed vector beam occurs. We then use two strategies for defining generalized Stokes parameters to describe phase conjugation of vector vortex beams. These allow for geometrical representations, such as higher-order Poincaré spheres. Our results are useful for description and design of stimulated and spontaneous parametric down conv…
The modern information networks are built on hybrid systems working at disparate optical wavelengths. Coherent interconnects for converting photons between different wavelengths are highly desired. Although coherent interconnects have conventionally been realized with nonlinear optical effects, those systems require demanding experimental conditions such as phase matching and/or cavity enhancement, which not only bring difficulties in experimental implementation but also set a narrow operating bandwidth (typically in MHz to GHz range as determined by the cavity linewidth). Here, we propose and…
Ultra-broadband long-period fiber grating with 10-dB bandwidth of 155 nm and 3-dB bandwidth of 415 nm is demonstrated around 1060 nm, which has been combined with a tunable ytterbium-doped fiber laser to generate optical doughnut beams in the spectral range from 1030 nm to 1099 nm, and the vector nature of generated optical fields are observed. The long-period fiber grating has also been used to transform the amplified spontaneous emission of an ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier into a broadband optical doughnut beam.
Most investigations of rare earth ions in solids for quantum information have used rare earth ion doped crystals. Here we analyse the conversion of quantum information from microwave photons to optical frequencies using crystals where the rare earth ions, rather than being dopants, are part of the host crystal. The potential of large ion densities and small linewidths makes such systems very attractive in this application. We show that, as well as high efficiency, large bandwidth conversion is possible. In fact, the collective coupling between the rare earth ions and the optical and microwave …
Spin-orbit interactions in optics traditionally describe an influence of the polarization degree of freedom of light on its spatial properties. The most prominent example is the generation of a spin-dependent optical vortex upon focusing or scattering of a circularly polarized plane-wave by a nanoparticle, converting spin to orbital angular momentum of light. Here, we present a mechanism of conversion of orbital-to-spin angular momentum of light upon scattering of a linearly polarized vortex beam by a spherical silicon nanoparticle. We show that focused linearly polarized Laguerre-Gaussian bea…
As one fundamental property of light, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of photon has elicited widespread interest. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that the OAM conversion of light without any spin state can occur in homogeneous and isotropic medium when a specially tailored locally linearly polarized (STLLP) beam is strongly focused by a high numerical aperture (NA) objective lens. Through a high NA objective lens, the STLLP beams can generate identical twin foci with tunable distance between them controlled by input state of polarization. Such process admits partial OAM conversion from l…
A new physical mechanism to achieve spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion based on the interaction of an intense circularly polarized (CP) laser beam with a plane foil is presented and studied for the first time. It has been verified by both simulation and theoretical analysis that vortex harmonics carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are generated after a relativistic CP laser beam, even a Gaussian beam, impinges normally on a plane foil. The generation of this vortex harmonics is attributed to the vortex oscillation of the plasma surface driven harmonically by the vortex longitudina…
Uniaxial anisotropy in nonlinear birefringent crystals limits the efficiency of nonlinear optical interactions and breaks the spatial symmetry of light generated in the parametric down-conversion (PDC) process. Therefore, this effect is usually undesirable and must be compensated for. However, high gain may be used to overcome the destructive role of anisotropy and instead to use it for the generation of bright two-mode correlated twin-beams. In this work, we provide a rigorous theoretical description of the spatial properties of bright squeezed light in the presence of strong anisotropy. We i…
The advanced-wave picture is "... an intuitive treatment of two-photon correlation with the help of the concept of an effective field acting upon one of the two detectors and formed by parametric conversion of the advanced wave emitted by the second detector ..." [A. V. Belinskii and D. N. Klyshko, JETP 78, 259 (1994)]. This quote from Belinskii and Klyshko nicely describes the concept of the advanced-wave picture; an intuitive tool for designing and predicting results from coincidence-based two-photon experiments. Up to now, the advanced-wave picture has been considered primarily for the case…
We present a single-beam atomic magnetometer operating at room temperature for the measurement of ac magnetic fields. The magnetometer functions in the non-linear regime of magneto-optical rotation of $^{85}$Rb atomic vapour. We demonstrate a sensitivity of $\sim 0.9$ pT$/ \sqrt{Hz}$ at 2 kHz and a large bandwidth of 24 kHz. The dynamic range of measurement is $10^6$, making the sensor effective even in Earth's field. We present the signal-to-noise and bandwidth characteristics of the system for both shielded and unshielded modes of operation. Moreover, we perform theoretical analysis for the …
Entangled photons produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion have been of paramount importance for our current understanding of quantum mechanics and advances in quantum information. In this process, the quantum correlations of the down-converted photons are governed by the optical properties of the pump beam illuminating the non-linear crystal. Extensively, the pump beam has been modeled by either coherent beams or by the well-know Gaussian-Schell model, which leads to the natural conclusion that a high degree of optical coherence is required for the generation of highly entangled sta…
Photonic analog to digital conversion offers promise to overcome the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and sample rate trade-off in conventional analog to digital converters (ADCs), critical for modern digital communications and signal analysis. We propose using phase-stable dual frequency combs with a fixed frequency spacing offset to downconvert spectral slices of a broadband signal and enable high resolution parallel digitization. To prove the concept of our proposed method, we demonstrate the detection of a 10-GHz subcarrier modulated (SCM) signal using 500-MHz bandwidth ADCs by optically conver…
Leveraging the quantum information processing ability of superconducting circuits and long-distance distribution ability of optical photons promises the realization of complex and large-scale quantum networks. In such a scheme, a coherent and efficient quantum transducer between superconducting and photonic circuits is critical. However, such quantum transducer is still challenging since the use of intermediate excitations in current schemes introduces extra noise and limits bandwidth. Here we realize direct and coherent transduction between superconducting and photonic circuits based on tripl…
In this work, we study the effect of beam deviation angle at the reception side and calculate the theoretical demultiplexed collected energy for up to 15 modes, investigating the influence of the ratio between incoming beam size and fundamental HG mode's waist. We show this approach greatly enhances the collection efficiency, tolerating tip-tilt error of more than 3 times compared to a Gaussian beam alone. We also show that, depending on wait size, a trade-off between collection efficiency at small angles and maximum acceptance angle can be achieved.
In this work we study the spatio-temporal correlations of photons produced by spontaneous parametric down conversion. In particular, we study how the waists of the detection and pump beams impact on the spectral bandwidth of the photons. Our results indicate that this parameter is greatly affected by the spatial properties of the detection beam, while not as much by the pump beam. This allows for a simple experimental implementation to control the bandwidth of the biphoton spectra, which only entails modifying the optical configuration to collect the photons. Moreover, we have performed Hong-O…
