We present a quantum optics approach for describing stimulated parametric down conversion in the two type-I crystal "sandwich" configuration, which allows for parametric interaction of vector vortex beams. We analyze the conditions for which phase conjugation of the seed vector beam occurs. We then use two strategies for defining generalized Stokes parameters to describe phase conjugation of vector vortex beams. These allow for geometrical representations, such as higher-order Poincaré spheres. Our results are useful for description and design of stimulated and spontaneous parametric down conversion experiments with vector vortex beams.
We report on an experiment that investigates the spatial mode conversion in the process of parametric down-conversion seeded by a light beam in a superposition of orbital angular momentum modes. This process is interpreted in terms of a geometric representation of first-order spatial modes in a Poincaré sphere, providing an intuitive image of the phase conjugation and the topological charge conservation. We also make a comparison with the analogous phenomenon for optical parametric oscillators.
Vector vortex beams have played a fundamental role in the better understanding of coherence and polarization. They are described by spatially inhomogeneous polarization states, which present a rich optical mode structure that has attracted much attention for applications in optical communications, imaging, spectroscopy and metrology. However, this complex mode structure can be quite detrimental when propagation effects such as turbulence and birefringence perturb the beam. Optical phase conjugation has been proposed as a method to recover an optical beam from perturbations. Here we demonstrate…
Phase conjugation with stimulated Brillouin scattering can be used to correct wavefront aberrations in high-power laser systems. Here, we consider such process with cylindrical vector lasers beams. By using a vectorial approach and a modal decomposition, we obtain a differential matrix equation that enables the calculation of the structure of Stokes vector eigenmodes and their Brillouin gain. The emphasis is put on the mode with the largest gain, which contributes the most to the Stokes beam. We show that the phase conjugation of orbital angular momentum in cylindrical vector beams is prevente…
Phase-locking of large mode area Yb photonic crystal fiber amplifiers via stimulated Brillouin scattering phase conjugation is analyzed. The wavefront reversing mirrors are proposed for chirped pulse fiber laser networks. The chirp control via both nonresonant Kerr and resonant index is considered.
The robust method for obtaining the helical interference pattern due to the phase-conjugation of an isolated optical vortex by means of the non-holographic technique is proposed. It is shown that a perfect wavefront-reversal of the vortex in a linear polarization state via even number of reflections is achievable due to the turn of the photon's momentum $\vec p \approx \hbar \vec k$ with respect to the photon's orbital angular momentum projection $L_z$. The possible experimental realization is based upon $catseye-prism$ like reflections inside the confocal optical $loop$ cavity. The alternativ…

Optical non-reciprocity, which breaks the symmetry between forward and backward propagating optical waves, has become vital in photonic systems and enables many key devices, such as optical isolators, circulators and optical routers. Most conventional optical isolators involve magneto-optic materials, but devices based on optical nonlinearities, optomechanically induced transparency and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) have also been demonstrated. So far, however, they have only been implemented for linearly or randomly polarized LP01-like fundamental modes. Here we report a light-driven …
Using the concept of an ideal phase-conjugating mirror we demonstrate that regardless of internal physical mechanism the phase-conjugation of a singular laser beam is accompanied by excitation within the mirror of internal waves which carry doubled angular momentum in order to match angular momentum conservation. For a Brillouin hypersound wavefront-reversal mirror this means that each elementary optical vortex belonging to a speckle pattern emits an acoustical vortex wave with doubled topological charge. The exact spatial profiles of light intensity and the intensity of hypersound in the vici…
Stimulated emission depletion (STED) can achieve optical super-resolution, with the optical diffraction limit broken by the suppression on the periphery of the fluorescent focal spot. Previously, it is generally experimentally accepted that there exists an inverse square root relationship with the STED power and the resolution, yet without strict analytical description. In this paper, we have analytically verified the relationship between the STED power and the achievable resolution from vector optical theory for the widely used 0-2$π$ vortex phase modulation. Electromagnetic fields of the foc…
Optical vortices, which have been extensively studied over the last decades, offer an additional degree of freedom useful in many applications, such as optical tweezers and quantum control. Stimulated Brillouin scattering, providing a narrow linewidth and a strong nonlinear response, has been used to realise quasi-continuous wave (CW) lasers. Here, we report stable oscillation of optical vortices and acoustic modes in a Brillouin laser based on chiral photonic crystal fibre, which robustly supports helical Bloch modes (HBMs) that carry circularly-polarized optical vortex and display circular b…
A triangular-lattice pattern is observed in light beams resulting from the spatial cross modulation between an optical vortex and a triangular shaped beam undergoing parametric interaction. Both up- and down-conversion processes are investigated, and the far-field image of the converted beam exhibits a triangular lattice. The number of sites and the lattice orientation are determined by the topological charge of the vortex beam. In the down-conversion process, the lattice orientation can also be affected by phase conjugation. The observed cross modulation works for a large variety of spatial f…
The Space Coronagraph Optical Bench (SCoOB): 6. demonstration of Lyot low order wavefront control combined with high order wavefront control using a vortex coronagraph
Nonlinear optical processes of spatially structured light, including optical vortex and vector optical fields, have stimulated a lot of interesting physical effects and found a variety of important applications ranging from optical imaging to quantum information processing. However, high harmonic generation of vector optical fields with space-varying polarization states is still a challenge. Here we demonstrate third harmonic generation of spatially structured light including vector optical fields, in a nonlinear Sagnac interferometer containing a carefully designed quasi-periodically poled po…
