Physics of two-dimensional electron gases under perpendicular magnetic field often displays three distinct stages when increasing the field amplitude: a low field regime with classical magnetotransport, followed at intermediate field by a Shubnikov-de Haas phase where the transport coefficients present quantum oscillations, and, ultimately, the emergence at high field of the quantum Hall effect with perfect quantization of the Hall resistance. A rigorous demonstration of this general paradigm is still limited by the difficulty in solving models of quantum Hall bars with macroscopic lateral dimensions and smooth disorder. We propose here the exact solution of a simple model exhibiting similarly two sharp transitions that are triggered by the competition of cyclotron motion and potential-induced drift. As a function of increasing magnetic field, one observes indeed three distinct phases showing respectively fully broken, partially smeared, or perfect Landau level quantization. This model is based on a non-rotationally invariant, inverted two-dimensional harmonic potential, from which a full quantum solution is obtained using 4D phase space quantization. The developed formalism unifies all three possible regimes under a single analytical theory, as well as arbitrary quadratic potentials, for all magnetic field values.
Breakdown of the quantum Hall effect (QHE) is commonly associated with an electric field approaching the inter Landau-level (LL) Zener field, ratio of the Landau gap and cyclotron radius. Eluded in semiconducting heterostructures, in spite of extensive investigation, the intrinsic Zener limit is reported here using high-mobility bilayer graphene and high-frequency current noise. We show that collective excitations arising from electron-electron interactions are essential. Beyond a noiseless ballistic QHE regime a large superpoissonian shot noise signals the breakdown via inter-LL scattering. T…
We report on results of systematic numerical studies of two-dimensional electron gas systems subject to a perpendicular magnetic field, with a high Landau level partially filled by electrons. Our results are strongly suggestive of a breakdown of translational symmetry and the presence of crystalline order in the ground state. This is in sharp contrast with the physics of the lowest and first excited Landau levels, and in good qualitative agreement with earlier Hartree-Fock studies. Experimental implications of our results are discussed.
Recent magnetotransport experiments on high mobility two-dimensional electron systems have revealed many-body electron states unique to high Landau levels. Among these are re-entrant integer quantum Hall states which undergo sharp transitions to conduction above some threshold field. Here we report that these transitions are often accompanied by narrow- and broad-band noise with frequencies which are strongly dependent on the magnitude of the applied dc current.
Tunneling measurements on 2D electron gases at high magnetic field reveal a qualitative difference between the two spin sublevels of the lowest Landau level. While the tunneling current-voltage characteristic at filling factor $ν= 1/2$ is a single peak shifted from zero bias by a Coulomb pseudogap, the spectrum at $ν=3/2$ shows a well-resolved double peak structure. This difference is present regardless of whether $ν=1/2$ and $ν= 3/2$ occur at the same or different magnetic fields. No analogous effect is seen at $ν= 5/2$ and 7/2 in the first excited Landau level.
Reentrant integer quantum Hall (RIQH) states are believed to be correlated electron solid phases, though their microscopic description remains unclear. As bias current increases, longitudinal and Hall resistivities measured for these states exhibit multiple sharp breakdown transitions, a signature unique to RIQH states. A comparison of RIQH breakdown characteristics at multiple voltage probes indicates that these signatures can be ascribed to a phase boundary between broken-down and unbroken regions, spreading chirally from source and drain contacts as a function of bias current and passing vo…
We calculate the Landau levels of a Kramers-Weyl semimetal thin slab in a perpendicular magnetic field $B$. The coupling of Fermi arcs on opposite surfaces broadens the Landau levels with a band width that oscillates periodically in $1/B$. We interpret the spectrum in terms of a one-dimensional superlattice induced by magnetic breakdown at Weyl points. The band width oscillations may be observed as $1/B$-periodic magnetoconductance oscillations, at weaker fields and higher temperatures than the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations due to Landau level quantization. No such spectrum appears in a gener…
We consider an adiabatic Landau-Zener model of two-level system diagonally coupled to an Ohmic bosonic bath of large spectral width and derive through fermionization its exact solution at a special value of the coupling constant. From this solution we obtain the characteristic function of the distribution of energy transferred to the bath during the evolution of the system ground state as a functional determinant of a single particle operator. At zero temperature this distribution is further found to be exponential and at finite temperature the first three moments of the distribution are calcu…
We analyze dynamics of a quantum particle in a square lattice in the Hall configuration beyond the single-band approximation. For vanishing gauge (magnetic) field this dynamics is defined by the inter-band Landau-Zener tunneling, which is responsible for the phenomenon known as the electric breakdown. We show that in the presence of a gauge field this phenomenon is absent, at least, in its common sense. Instead, the Landau-Zener tunneling leads to appearance of a finite current which flows in the direction orthogonal to the vector of a potential (electric) field.
Intra Landau level thermal activation, from localized states in the tail, to delocalized states above the mobility edge in the same Landau level, explains the $B_c(T)$ (half width of the dissipationless state) phase diagram for a number of different quantum Hall samples with widely ranging carrier density, mobility and disorder. Good agreement is achieved over $2-3$ orders of magnitude in temperature and magnetic field for a wide range of filling factors. The Landau level width is found to be independent of magnetic field. The mobility edge moves, in the case of changing Landau level overlap t…
We propose a simple ansatz that allows to generate new exactly solvable multi-state Landau-Zener models. It is based on a system of two decoupled two-level atoms whose levels vary with time and cross at some moments. Then we consider multiparticle systems with Heisenberg equations for annihilation operators having similar structure with Shrödinger equation for amplitudes in multistate Landau-Zener models and show that the corresponding Shrödinger equation in multiparticle sector belongs to the multistate Landau-Zener class. This observation allows to generate new exactly solvable models from a…
I present a simple algorithm based on a type of partial reverse-engineering that generates an unlimited number of exact analytical solutions to the Schrodinger equation for a general time-dependent two-level Hamiltonian. I demonstrate this method by deriving new exact solutions corresponding to fast control pulses that contain arbitrarily many tunable parameters. It is shown that the formalism is naturally suited to generating analytical control protocols that perform precise non-adiabatic rapid passage and Landau-Zener interferometry near the quantum speed limit. A general, exact formula for …
Recently, integrability conditions (ICs) in mutistate Landau-Zener (MLZ) theory were proposed [1]. They describe common properties of all known solved systems with linearly time-dependent Hamiltonians. Here we show that ICs enable efficient computer assisted search for new solvable MLZ models that span complexity range from several interacting states to mesoscopic systems with many-body dynamics and combinatorially large phase space. This diversity suggests that nontrivial solvable MLZ models are numerous. In addition, we refine the formulation of ICs and extend the class of solvable systems t…
We have developed a method for electrical polarization of nuclear spins in quantum Hall systems. In a breakdown regime of odd-integer quantum Hall effect (QHE), excitation of electrons to the upper Landau subband with opposite spin polarity dynamically polarizes nuclear spins through the hyperfine interaction. The polarized nuclear spins in turn accelerate the QHE breakdown, leading to hysteretic voltage-current characteristics of the quantum Hall conductor.
We investigate the upper critical field in a dirty two-band superconductor within quasiclassical Usadel equations. The regime of very high anisotropy in the quasi-2D band, relevant for MgB$_{2}$, is considered. We show that strong disparities in pairing interactions and diffusion constant anisotropies for two bands influence the in-plane $H_{c2}$ in a different way at high and low temperatures. This causes temperature-dependent $H_{c2}$ anisotropy, in accordance with recent experimental data in MgB$_{2}$. The three-dimensional band most strongly influences the in-plane $H_{c2}$ near $T_{c}$, i…
We report high magnetic field scanning tunneling microscopy and Landau level spectroscopy of twisted graphene layers grown by chemical vapor deposition. For twist angles exceeding ~3 degrees the low energy carriers exhibit Landau level spectra characteristic of massless Dirac fermions. Above 20 degrees the layers effectively decouple and the electronic properties are indistinguishable from those in single layer graphene, while for smaller angles we observe a slow-down of the carrier velocity which is strongly angle dependent. At the smallest angles the spectra are dominated by twist induced Va…
We identify a nontrivial 4-state Landau-Zener model for which transition probabilities between any pair of diabatic states can be determined analytically and exactly. The model describes an experimentally accessible system of two interacting qubits, such as a localized state in a Dirac material with both valley and spin degrees of freedom or a singly charged quantum dot (QD) molecule with spin orbit coupling. Application of the linearly time-dependent magnetic field induces a sequence of quantum level crossings with possibility of interference of different trajectories in a semiclassical pictu…
Nuclear spins are polarized electrically in a breakdown regime of an odd-integer quantum Hall effect (QHE). Electron excitation to the upper Landau subband with the opposite spin polarity flips nuclear spins through the hyperfine interaction. The polarized nuclear spins reduce the spin-splitting energy and accelerate the QHE breakdown. The Knight shift of the nuclear spins is also measured by tuning electron density during the irradiation of radio-frequency magnetic fields.
Unconventional magneto-transport fingerprints in the quantum Hall regime (with applied magnetic field from one to several tens of Tesla) in chemically functionalized graphene are reported. Upon chemical adsorption of monoatomic oxygen (from 0.5% to few percents), the electron-hole symmetry of Landau levels is broken, while a double-peaked conductivity develops at low-energy, resulting from the formation of critical states conveyed by the random network of defects-induced impurity states. Scaling analysis hints towards the existence of an additional zero-energy quantized Hall conductance platea…
We study dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) induced by breakdown of the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect. We find that voltage-current characteristics depend on current sweep rates at the quantum Hall states of Landau level filling factors $ν$ = 1, 2/3, and 1/3. The sweep rate dependence is attributed to DNP occurring in the breakdown regime of FQH states. Results of a pump and probe experiment show that the polarities of the DNP induced in the breakdown regimes of the FQH states is opposite to that of the DNP induced in the breakdown regimes of odd-integer quantum Hall states.
We use low-temperature scanning gate microscopy (SGM) to investigate the breakdown of the quantum Hall regime in an exfoliated bilayer graphene flake. SGM images captured during breakdown exhibit intricate patterns of "hotspots" where the conductance is strongly affected by the presence of the tip. Our results are well described by a model based on quantum percolation which relates the points of high responsivity to tip-induced scattering between localized Landau levels.
We discuss a class of models that generalize the two-state Landau-Zener (LZ) Hamiltonian to both the multistate and multitime evolution. It is already known that the corresponding quantum mechanical evolution can be understood in great detail. Here, we present an approach to classify such solvable models, namely, to identify all their independent families for a given number $N$ of interacting states and prove the absence of such families for some types of interactions. We also discuss how, within a solvable family, one can classify the scattering matrices, i.e., the system's dynamics. Due to t…
We propose the semiclassical quantization for complicated electron systems governed by a many-band Hamiltonian. An explicit analytical expression of the corresponding Berry phase is derived. This impact allows us to evaluate the Landau magnetic levels when the rigorous quantization fails, for instance, for bilayer graphene and graphite with the trigonal warping. We find that the magnetic breakdown can be observed for the certain type of classical electron orbits.
In this report we experimentally probe the non-equilibrium breakdown of the quantum Hall state in monolayer graphene by injecting a high current density ($\sim$1A/m). The measured critical currents for dissipationless transport in the vicinity of integer filling factors show a dependence on filling factor. The breakdown can be understood in terms of inter Landau level (LL) scattering resulting from mixing of wavefunctions of different LLs. To further study the effect of transverse electric field, we measured the transverse resistance between the $ν=2$ to $ν=6$ plateau transition for different …
We consider the model of a single optical cavity mode interacting with two-level systems (spins) driven by a linearly time-dependent field. When this field passes through values at which spin energy level splittings become comparable to spin coupling to the optical mode, a cascade of Landau-Zener (LZ) transitions leads to co-flips of spins in exchange for photons of the cavity. We derive exact transition probabilities between different diabatic states induced by such a sweep of the field.
The concept of quantum integrability has been introduced recently for quantum systems with explicitly time-dependent Hamiltonians. Within the multistate Landau-Zener (MLZ) theory, however, there has been a successful alternative approach to identify and solve complex time-dependent models. Here we compare both methods by applying them to a new class of exactly solvable MLZ models. This class contains systems with an arbitrary number $N\ge 4$ of interacting states and shows a quickly growing with $N$ number of exact adiabatic energy crossing points, which appear at different moments of time. At…
The Bethe ansatz (BA) equations for the two-dimensional Bloch electrons in a uniform magnetic field are treated in the weak field limit. We have calculated energies near the lower boundary of the energy spectrum up to the first nontrivial order. It corresponds to calculating a finite size correction for the excitation energies of the BA solvable lattice models and gives the Landau levels in the present problem.
Microscopic processes giving the energy gain and loss of a two-dimensional electron system in long-range potential fluctuations are studied theoretically at the breakdown of the quantum Hall effect in the case of even-integer filling factors. The Coulomb scattering within a broadened Landau level is proposed to give the gain, while the phonon scattering to give the loss. The energy balance equation shows that the electron temperature T_e and the diagonal conductivity sigma_{xx} exhibit a bistability above the lower critical electric field E_{c1}. Calculated values of E_{c1} as well as T_e and …
We performed noise measurements in a two-dimensional electron gas to investigate the nonequilibrium quantum Hall effect (QHE) state. While excess noise is perfectly suppressed around the zero-biased QHE state reflecting the dissipationless electron transport of the QHE state, considerable finite excess noise is observed in the breakdown regime of the QHE. The noise temperature deduced from the excess noise is found to be of the same order as the energy gap between the highest occupied Landau level and the lowest empty one. Moreover, unexpected finite excess noise is observed at a finite source…
A single graphene layer exhibits an anomalous Landau level spectrum. A massless Dirac like low energy electronic spectrum underlies this anomaly. We study, analytically and numerically, the effect of a uniform electric field $(E)$ on the anomalous Landau levels. We solve the problem exactly within the Dirac cone approximation and find an interesting scaling of the spectrum, leading to the collapse of the Landau levels at a critical $E_c(B)$, for a given magnetic field $B$. We offer a physical interpretation of our result, which uses `graphene relativity' and the boost operation. Electric field…
We study the dynamics of carriers in graphene subjected to an inhomogeneous magnetic field. For a magnetic field with an hyperbolic profile the corresponding Dirac equation can be analyzed within the formalism of supersymmetric quantum mechanics, and leads to an exactly solvable model. We study in detail the bound spectra. For a narrow barrier the spectra is characterized by a few bands, except for the zero energy level that remains degenerated. As, the width of the barrier increases we can track the bands evolution into the degenerated Landau levels. In the scattering regime a simple analytic…
Quantum transport properties of electron systems driven by strong electric fields are studied by mapping the Landau-Zener transition dynamics to a quantum walk on a semi-infinite one-dimensional lattice with a reflecting boundary, where the sites correspond to energy levels and the boundary the ground state. Quantum interference induces a distribution localized around the ground state, and when the electric field is strengthened, a delocalization transition occurs describing breakdown of the original electron system.
The low-energy quasiparticles of Weyl semimetals are a condensed-matter realization of the Weyl fermions introduced in relativistic field theory. Chiral anomaly, the nonconservation of the chiral charge under parallel electric and magnetic fields, is arguably the most important phenomenon of Weyl semimetals and has been explained as an imbalance between the occupancies of the gapless, zeroth Landau levels with opposite chiralities. This widely accepted picture has served as the basis for subsequent studies. Here we report the breakdown of the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals in a strong magne…
The Nieh-Yan anomaly is the anomalous breakdown of the chiral U(1) symmetry caused by the interaction between torsion and fermions. We study this anomaly from the point of view of torsional Landau levels. It was found that the torsional Landau levels are gapless, while their contributions to the chiral anomaly are canceled, except those from the lowest torsional Landau levels. Hence, the dimension is effectively reduced from (3+1)-dimensional to (1+1)-dimensional. We further show that the coefficient of the Nieh-Yan anomaly is the free energy density in (1+1) dimensions. Especially, at finite …
As a canonical response to the applied magnetic field, the electronic states of a metal are fundamentally reorganized into Landau levels. In Dirac metals, Landau levels can be expected without magnetic fields, provided that an inhomogeneous strain is applied to spatially modulate electron hoppings in a similar way as the Aharonov-Bohm phase. We here predict that a twisted zigzag nanoribbon of graphene exhibits strain-induced pseudo Landau levels of unexplored but analytically solvable dispersions at low energies. The presence of such dispersive pseudo Landau levels results in a negative strain…
The integer quantum Hall effect is a well-studied phenomenon at frequencies below about 100 Hz. The plateaus in high-frequency Hall conductivity were experimentally proven to retain up to 33 GHz, but the behavior at higher frequencies has remained largely unexplored. Using continuous wave THz spectroscopy, the complex Hall conductivity of GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunctions was studied in the range of 69-1100 GHz. Above 100 GHz, the quantum plateaus are strongly smeared out and replaced by weak quantum oscillations in the real part of the conductivity. The amplitude of the oscillations decreases with …
Recent transport experiments have revealed the activation of longitudinal magnetoresistance of Weyl semimetals in the quantum limit, suggesting the breakdown of chiral anomaly in a strong magnetic field. Here we provide a general mechanism for gapping the zeroth chiral Landau levels applicable for both Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Our result shows that the zeroth Landau levels anticross when the magnetic axis is perpendicular to the Dirac/Weyl node separation and when the inverse magnetic length $l_B^{-1}$ is comparable to the node separation scale $Δk$. The induced bulk gap increases rapidly be…
We have analyzed the breakdown of the quantum Hall effect in 1 micrometer wide Hall devices fabricated from an exfoliated monolayer graphene transferred on SiOx. We have observed that the deviation of the Hall resistance from its quantized value is weakly dependent on the longitudinal resistivity up to current density of 5 A/m, where the Hall resistance remains quantized even when the longitudinal resistance increases monotonously with the current. Then a collapse in the quantized resistance occurs while longitudinal resistance keeps its gradual increase. The exponential increase of the conduc…
Multitime Landau-Zener (MTLZ) model is a class of exactly solvable quantum many-body models which is multitstate and multitime generalization of the two-state Landau-Zener model. Currently discovered MTLZ models include the "hypercubes", the "fans" and their direct product models. In this work, we prove two no-go rules, named the "no $K_{3,3}$" rule and the "no $1221$" rule, which forbid the existence of exact solutions for models with certain structures of interactions. We further apply these rules to show that for models with no more than $9$ states, besides the models mentioned above there …
We study the effect on CPP GMR of changing the order of the layers in a multilayer. Using a tight-binding simple cubic two band model (s-d), magneto-transport properties are calculated in the zero-temperature, zero-bias limit, within the Landauer-Buttiker formalism. We demonstrate that for layers of different thicknesses formed from a single magnetic metal and multilayers formed from two magnetic metals, the GMR ratio and its dependence on disorder is sensitive to the order of the layers. This effect disappears in the limit of large disorder, where the results of the widely-used Boltzmann appr…
We consider a spin-1/2 Bose-Einstein condensate prepared initially in a single spin projection. The two channels of excitations existing in such a system (namely density and spin waves) are discussed and we show how pure spin waves can be excited in the presence of local magnetic defects. We analyze the role played by spin excitations on the Landau superfluidity criterion and demonstrate the absence of absolute superfluidity for the antiferromagnetic condensate. In the ferromagnetic case, we identify two critical velocities for the breakdown of superfluidity.
Analytical multi-domain solutions to the dynamical (Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert) equation of a one-dimensional ferromagnet including an external magnetic field and spin-polarized electric current are found using the Hirota bilinearization method. A standard approach to solve the Landau-Lifshitz equation (without the Gilbert term) is modified in order to treat the dissipative dynamics. I establish the relations between the spin interaction parameters (the constants of exchange, anisotropy, dissipation, external-field intensity, and electric-current intensity) and the domain-wall parameters (width a…
We consider magnetic breakdown in twisted bilayer graphene where electrons may hop between semiclassical $k$-space trajectories in different layers. These trajectories within a doubled Brillouin zone constitute a network in which an $S$-matrix at each saddle point is used to model tunneling between different layers. Matching of the semiclassical wavefunctions throughout the network determines the energy spectrum. Semiclassical orbits with energies well below that of the saddle points are Landau levels of the Dirac points in each layer. These continuously evolve into {\it both} electron-like an…
We use numerical simulations to predict peculiar magnetotransport fingerprints in polycrystalline graphene, driven by the presence of grain boundaries of varying size and orientation. The formation of Landau levels is shown to be restricted by the polycrystalline morphology, requiring the magnetic length to be smaller than the average grain radius. The nature of localization is also found to be unusual, with strongly localized states at the center of Landau levels (including the usually highly robust zero-energy state) and extended electronic states lying between Landau levels. These extended …
We have investigated tunneling current through a suspended graphene Corbino disk in high magnetic fields at the Dirac point, i.e. at filling factor $ν$ = 0. At the onset of the dielectric breakdown the current through the disk grows exponentially before ohmic behaviour, but in a manner distinct from thermal activation. We find that Zener tunneling between Landau sublevels dominates, facilitated by tilting of the source-drain bias potential. According to our analytic modelling, the Zener tunneling is strongly affected by the gyrotropic force (Lorentz force) due to the high magnetic field
Resistively-detected NMR (RDNMR) is a unique characterization method enabling highly-sensitive NMR detection for a single quantum nanostructure, such as a quantum point contact (QPC). In many studies, we use dynamic nuclear polarization and RDNMR detection in a quantum Hall breakdown regime of a local QPC filling factor of 1 ($ν_{\rm{qpc}} = 1$). However, the lineshapes of RDNMR signal are proved to be complicated and still not fully understood yet. Here, we systematically polarize the nuclear spins by current-pumping from the close vicinity of $ν_{\rm{qpc}} = 1$ conductance plateau all the wa…
For three-dimensional metals, Landau levels disperse as a function of the magnetic field and the momentum wavenumber parallel to the field. In this two-dimensional parameter space, it is shown that two conically-dispersing Landau levels can touch at a diabolical point -- a Landau-Dirac point. The conditions giving rise to Landau-Dirac points are shown to be magnetic breakdown (field-induced quantum tunneling) and certain crystallographic spacetime symmetry. Both conditions are realizable in topological nodal-line metals, as we exemplify with CaP$_3$. A Landau-Dirac point reveals itself in anom…
We have investigated the cross-over from Zener tunneling of single charge carriers to avalanche type of bunched electron transport in a suspended graphene Corbino disk in the zeroth Landau level. At low bias, we find a tunneling current that follows the gyrotropic Zener tunneling behavior. At larger bias, we find avalanche type of transport that sets in at a smaller current the larger the magnetic field is. The low-frequency noise indicates strong bunching of the electrons in the avalanches. On the basis of the measured low-frequency switching noise power, we deduce the characteristic switchin…
We studied the unusual Quantum Hall Effect (QHE) near the charge neutrality point (CNP) in high-mobility graphene sample for magnetic fields up to 18 T. We observe breakdown of the delocalized QHE transport and strong increase in resistivities $ρ_{xx},|ρ_{xy}|$ with decreasing Landau level filling for $ν< 2$, where we identify two insulating regimes. For $1 \gtrsim |ν| \gtrsim 1/2$ we find an exponential increase of $ρ_{xx,xy} \sim e^{a(H-H_c)}$ within the range up to several resistance quanta $R_K$, while the Hall effect gradually disappears, consistent with the Hall insulator (HI) with local…
We obtain the exact expression for the matrix of nonadiabatic transition probabilities in the model of three interacting states with a time-dependent Hamiltonian. Unlike other known solvable Landau-Zener-like problems, our solution is generally expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions that have relatively complex behavior, e.g. the obtained transition probabilities may show multiple oscillations as functions of parameters of the model Hamiltonian.
We calculate the local density of states of a two-dimensional electron system under strong crossed magnetic and electric fields. We assume a strong perpendicular magnetic field which, in the absence of in-plane electric fields and collision broadening effects, leads to Landau quantization and the well-known singular Landau density of states. Unidirectional in-plane electric fields lead to a broadening of the delta-function-singularities of the Landau density of states. This results in position-dependent peaks of finite height and width, which can be expressed in terms of the energy eigenfuncti…
We consider the simplest non-integrable model of multistate Landau-Zener transition. In this model two pairs of levels in two tunnel coupled quantum dots are swept passed each other by the gate voltage. Although this 2 * 2 model is non-integrable, it can be solved analytically in the limit when the inter-level energy distance is much smaller than their tunnel splitting. The result is contrasted to the similar 2 * 1 model, in which one of the dots contains only one level. The latter model does not allow interference of the virtual transition amplitudes, and it is exactly solvable. In 2 * 1 mode…
We examine the possibility of creating the Moore-Read Pfaffian in the lowest Landau level when the multicomponent Halperin 331 state (believed to describe quantum Hall bilayers and wide quantum wells at the filling factor $ν=1/2$) is destroyed by the increase of tunneling. Using exact diagonalization of the bilayer Hamiltonian with short-range and long-range (Coulomb) interactions in spherical and periodic rectangular geometries, we establish that tunneling is a perturbation that drives the 331 state into a compressible composite Fermi liquid, with the possibility for an intermediate critical …
We determine transition probabilities in two exactly solvable multistate Landau-Zener (LZ) models and discuss applications of our results to the theory of dynamic passage through a phase transition in the dissipationless quantum mechanical regime. In particular, we show that statistics of particles in a new phase demonstrate scaling behavior. Our results also reveal a symmetry that we claim is a property of a large class of multistate LZ models, whose explicit solutions are not presently known. We support our arguments by direct numerical simulations.
