We consider the relation between Sion's minimax theorem for a continuous function and a Nash equilibrium in a multi-players game with two groups which is zero-sum and symmetric in each group. We will show the following results.
1. The existence of Nash equilibrium which is symmetric in each group implies Sion's minimax theorem with the coincidence of the maximin strategy and the minimax strategy for players in each group. %given the values of the strategic variables.
2. Sion's minimax theorem with the coincidence of the maximin strategy and the minimax strategy for players in each group implies the existence of a Nash equilibrium which is symmetric in each group.
Thus, they are equivalent. An example of such a game is a relative profit maximization game in each group under oligopoly with two groups such that firms in each group have the same cost functions and maximize their relative profits in each group, and the demand functions are symmetric for the firms in each group.
We consider a formulation of a non zero-sum n players game by an n+1 players zero-sum game. We suppose the existence of the n+1-th player in addition to n players in the main game, and virtual subsidies to the n players which is provided by the n+1-th player. Its strategic variable affects only the subsidies, and does not affect choice of strategies by the n players in the main game. His objective function is the opposite of the sum of the payoffs of the n players. We will show 1) The minimax theorem by Sion (Sion(1958)) implies the existence of Nash equilibrium in the n players non zero-sum g…
In these notes, we examine certain implications of Sion's minimax theorem for compact quadratically constrained quadratic programs (QCQPs), particularly QCQPs arising in the context of optimizing wave scattering, in relation to Lagrangian duality. The discussion puts forward an alternative "dual" understanding of optimization for wave phenomena that anticipates the realization of algorithmic (inverse design) methods attaining a guaranteed degree of global optimality for common figures of merit appearing in applied photonics, acoustics, and quantum mechanics.
We consider two classes of constrained finite state-action stochastic games. First, we consider a two player nonzero sum single controller constrained stochastic game with both average and discounted cost criterion. We consider the same type of constraints as in [1], i.e., player 1 has subscription based constraints and player 2, who controls the transition probabilities, has realization based constraints which can also depend on the strategies of player 1. Next, we consider a N -player nonzero sum constrained stochastic game with independent state processes where each player has average cost …
This work investigates a problem of simultaneous global cost minimization and Nash equilibrium seeking, which commonly exists in $N$-cluster non-cooperative games. Specifically, the agents in the same cluster collaborate to minimize a global cost function, being a summation of their individual cost functions, and jointly play a non-cooperative game with other clusters as players. For the problem settings, we suppose that the explicit analytical expressions of the agents' local cost functions are unknown, but the function values can be measured. We propose a gradient-free Nash equilibrium seeki…
Multi-leader multi-follower games are a class of hierarchical games in which a collection of leaders compete in a Nash game constrained by the equilibrium conditions of another Nash game amongst the followers. The resulting equilibrium problem with equilibrium constraints is complicated by nonconvex agent problems and therefore providing tractable conditions for existence of global or even local equilibria for it has proved challenging. Consequently, much of the extant research on this topic is either model specific or relies on weaker notions of equilibria. We consider a modified formulation …
We study a static game played by a finite number of agents, in which agents are assigned independent and identically distributed random types and each agent minimizes its objective function by choosing from a set of admissible actions that depends on its type. The game is anonymous in the sense that the objective function of each agent depends on the actions of other agents only through the empirical distribution of their type-action pairs. We study the asymptotic behavior of Nash equilibria, as the number of agents tends to infinity, first by deriving laws of large numbers characterizes almos…
This note is devoted to study a class of games with a continuum of players for which Cournot-Nash equilibria can be obtained by minimisation of some cost related to Optimal Transport. In particular we focus on the case of an Optimal Transport term between unequal dimension. We also present several numerical simulations.
We consider a class of N-player stochastic games of multi-dimensional singular control, in which each player faces a minimization problem of monotone-follower type with submodular costs. We call these games "monotone-follower games". In a not necessarily Markovian setting, we establish the existence of Nash equilibria. Moreover, we introduce a sequence of approximating games by restricting, for each natural number n, the players' admissible strategies to the set of Lipschitz processes with Lipschitz constant bounded by n. We prove that, for each n, there exists a Nash equilibrium of the approx…
In this paper we use the minimax inequalities obtained by S. Park (2011) to prove the existence of weighted Nash equilibria and Pareto Nash equilibria of a multiobjective game defined on abstract convex spaces.
We study distributed algorithms for seeking a Nash equilibrium in a class of non-cooperative convex games with strongly monotone mappings. Each player has access to her own smooth local cost function and can communicate to her neighbors in some undirected graph. To deal with fast distributed learning of Nash equilibria under such settings, we introduce a so called augmented game mapping and provide conditions under which this mapping is strongly monotone. We consider a distributed gradient play algorithm for determining a Nash equilibrium (GRANE). The algorithm involves every player performing…
The paper is devoted to the first-order mean field game system in the case when the distribution of players can contain atoms. The proposed definition of a generalized solution is based on the minimax approach to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We prove the existence of the generalized (minimax) solution of the mean filed game system using the Nash equilibrium in the auxiliary differential game with infinitely many identical players. We show that the minimax solution of the original system provide the $\varepsilon$-Nash equilibrium in the differential game with finite number of players.
We explore the power of semidefinite programming (SDP) for finding additive $epsilon$-approximate Nash equilibria in bimatrix games. We introduce an SDP relaxation for a quadratic programming formulation of the Nash equilibrium (NE) problem and provide a number of valid inequalities to improve the quality of the relaxation. If a rank-1 solution to this SDP is found, then an exact NE can be recovered. We show that for a strictly competitive game, our SDP is guaranteed to return a rank-1 solution. We propose two algorithms based on iterative linearization of smooth nonconvex objective functions …
This paper studies an $N$-coalition non-cooperative game problem, where the players in the same coalition cooperatively minimize the sum of their local cost functions under a directed communication graph, while collectively acting as a virtual player to play a non-cooperative game with other coalitions. Moreover, it is assumed that the players have no access to the explicit functional form but only the function value of their local costs. To solve the problem, a discrete-time gradient-free Nash equilibrium seeking strategy, based on the gradient tracking method, is proposed. Specifically, a gr…
This paper studies distributed online bandit learning of generalized Nash equilibria for online game, where cost functions of all players and coupled constraints are time-varying. The values rather than full information of cost and local constraint functions are revealed to local players gradually. The goal of each player is to selfishly minimize its own cost function with no future information subject to a strategy set constraint and time-varying coupled inequality constraints. To this end, a distributed online algorithm based on mirror descent and one-point bandit feedback is designed for se…
We study the infinite horizon discrete time N-player nonzero-sum Dynkin game ($N \geq 2$) with stopping times as strategies (or pure strategies). We prove existence of an $\varepsilon$-Nash equilibrium point for the game by presenting a constructive algorithm. One of the main features is that the payoffs of the players depend on the set of players that stop at the termination stage which is the minimal stage in which at least one player stops. The existence result is extended to the case of a nonzero-sum game with finite horizon. Finally, the algorithm is illustrated by two explicit examples i…
In this paper, we study the distributed generalized Nash equilibrium seeking problem of non-cooperative games in dynamic environments. Each player in the game aims to minimize its own time-varying cost function subject to a local action set. The action sets of all players are coupled through a shared convex inequality constraint. Each player can only have access to its own cost function, its own set constraint and a local block of the inequality constraint, and can only communicate with its neighbours via a connected graph. Moreover, players do not have prior knowledge of their future cost fun…
We study strong stability of Nash equilibria in load balancing games of m (m >= 2) identical servers, in which every job chooses one of the m servers and each job wishes to minimize its cost, given by the workload of the server it chooses. A Nash equilibrium (NE) is a strategy profile that is resilient to unilateral deviations. Finding an NE in such a game is simple. However, an NE assignment is not stable against coordinated deviations of several jobs, while a strong Nash equilibrium (SNE) is. We study how well an NE approximates an SNE. Given any job assignment in a load balancing game, the …

We study discrete-time mean-field Markov games with infinite numbers of agents where each agent aims to minimize its ergodic cost. We consider the setting where the agents have identical linear state transitions and quadratic cost functions, while the aggregated effect of the agents is captured by the population mean of their states, namely, the mean-field state. For such a game, based on the Nash certainty equivalence principle, we provide sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of its Nash equilibrium. Moreover, to find the Nash equilibrium, we propose a mean-field actor-criti…
This paper investigates a class of mixed stochastic linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) social optimization and Nash game in the context of a large scale system. Two types of interactive agents are involved: a major agent and a large number of weakly-coupled minor agents. All minor agents are cooperative to minimize the social cost as the sum of their individual costs, whereas such social cost are conflictive to that of major agent. Thus, major agent and all minor agents are further competitive to reach some non-zero Nash equilibrium. The control processes enter both diffusion and drift terms of a…
We consider a distributed stochastic approximation (SA) scheme for computing an equilibrium of a stochastic Nash game. Standard SA schemes employ diminishing steplength sequences that are square summable but not summable. Such requirements provide a little or no guidance for how to leverage Lipschitzian and monotonicity properties of the problem and naive choices generally do not preform uniformly well on a breadth of problems. While a centralized adaptive stepsize SA scheme is proposed in [1] for the optimization framework, such a scheme provides no freedom for the agents in choosing their ow…
This paper considers an $N$-player stochastic Nash game in which the $i$th player minimizes a composite objective $f_i(x) + r_i(x_i)$, where $f_i$ is expectation-valued and $r_i$ has an efficient prox-evaluation. In this context, we make the following contributions. (i) Under a strong monotonicity assumption on the concatenated gradient map, we derive ({\bf optimal}) rate statements and oracle complexity bounds for the proposed variable sample-size proximal stochastic gradient-response (VS-PGR) scheme; (ii) We overlay (VS-PGR) with a consensus phase with a view towards developing distributed p…
Distributed Nash equilibrium (NE) seeking problem for multi-coalition games has attracted increasing attention in recent years, but the research mainly focuses on the case without agreement demand within coalitions. This paper considers a class of networked games among multiple coalitions where each coalition contains multiple agents that cooperate to minimize the sum of their costs, subject to the demand of reaching an agreement on their state values. Furthermore, the underlying network topology among the agents does not need to be balanced. To achieve the goal of NE seeking within such a con…
We consider the problem of optimal charging of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs). We treat this problem as a multi-agent game, where vehicles/agents are heterogeneous since they are subject to possibly different constraints. Under the assumption that electricity price is affine in total demand, we show that, for any finite number of heterogeneous agents, the PEV charging control game admits a unique Nash equilibrium, which is the optimizer of an auxiliary minimization program. We are also able to quantify the asymptotic behaviour of the price of anarchy for this class of games. More precisely, …

We consider a generalized Nash equilibrium problem (GNEP) for a network of players. Each player tries to minimize a local objective function subject to some resource constraints where both the objective functions and the resource constraints depend on other players' decisions. By conducting equivalent transformations on the local optimization problems and introducing network Lagrangian, we recast the GNEP into an operator zero-finding problem. An algorithm is proposed based on the Douglas-Rachford method to distributedly find a solution. The proposed algorithm requires milder conditions compar…
This paper considers the distributed strategy design for Nash equilibrium (NE) seeking in multi-cluster games under a partial-decision information scenario. In the considered game, there are multiple clusters and each cluster consists of a group of agents. A cluster is viewed as a virtual noncooperative player that aims to minimize its local payoff function and the agents in a cluster are the actual players that cooperate within the cluster to optimize the payoff function of the cluster through communication via a connected graph. In our setting, agents have only partial-decision information, …
This paper aims to reduce the communication and computation costs of the Nash equilibrium seeking strategy for the $N$-coalition noncooperative games proposed in [1]. The objective is achieved in two manners: 1. An interference graph is introduced to describe the interactions among the agents in each coalition. 2. The Nash equilibrium seeking strategy is designed with the interference graphs considered. The convergence property of the proposed Nash equilibrium seeking strategy is analytically investigated. It is shown that the agents' actions generated by the proposed method converge to a neig…
This paper considers a new class of deterministic finite-time horizon, two-player, zero-sum differential games (DGs) in which the maximizing player is allowed to take continuous and impulse controls whereas the minimizing player is allowed to take impulse control only. We seek to approximate the value function, and to provide a verification theorem for this class of DGs. We first, by means of dynamic programming principle (DPP) in viscosity solution (VS) framework, characterize the value function as the unique VS to the related Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman-Isaacs (HJBI) double-obstacle equation. Ne…
We present a moving target defense strategy to reduce the impact of stealthy sensor attacks on feedback systems. The defender periodically and randomly switches between thresholds from a discrete set to increase the uncertainty for the attacker and make stealthy attacks detectable. However, the defender does not know the exact goal of the attacker but only the prior of the possible attacker goals. Here, we model one period with a constant threshold as a Bayesian game and use the Bayesian Nash equilibrium concept to find the distribution for the choice of the threshold in that period, which tak…
