In inertial confinement fusion, the scientific issues include the generation and transport of driver energy, the pellet design, the uniform target implosion physics, the realistic nuclear fusion reactor design, etc. In this paper, we present a pellet injection into a power reactor in heavy ion inertial fusion. We employ a magnetic correction method to reduce the pellet alignment error in heavy ion inertial fusion reactor chamber, including the gravity, the reactor gas drag force and the injection errors. We found that the magnetic correction device proposed in this paper is effective to construct a robust pellet injection system with a sufficiently small pellet alignment error.
Self-heating condition and following ignition in an Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) fuel pellet is evaluated by calculating the power equations, dynamically. In fact, the self-heating condition is a criterion that determines the minimum parameters of a fuel (such as temperature, density and areal density) that can be ignited. Deuterium is the main component of ICF fuels as large amounts of it are naturally available. In addition, the use of deuterium as a fuel in ICF causes the production of tritium and helium-3. However, pure deuterium has a high ignition temperature (T$\geq$40 keV) which m…
Reactor grade plasmas are likely to be fuelled by pellet injection. This technique transiently perturbs the profiles, driving the density profile hollow and flattening the edge temperature profile. After the pellet perturbation, the density and temperature profiles relax towards their quasi-steady-state shape. Microinstabilities influence plasma confinement and will play a role in determining the evolution of the profiles in pellet fuelled plasmas. In this paper we present the microstability analysis of pellet fuelled H-mode MAST plasmas. Taking advantage of the unique capabilities of the MAST…
For the first time the pellet cycle of a multiple-isotope plasma is successfully reproduced with reduced turbulent transport modelling, within an integrated simulation framework. Future nuclear fusion reactors are likely to be fuelled by cryogenic pellet injection, due to higher penetration and faster response times. Accurate pellet cycle modelling is crucial to assess fuelling efficiency and burn control. In recent JET tokamak experiments, deuterium pellets with reactor-relevant deposition characteristics were injected into a pure hydrogen plasma. Measurements of the isotope ratio profile inf…

One of the best methods in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) is the concept of central spark ignition, consisting of two distinct regions named as hot and cold regions and formed by hydro-dynamical implosion of fuel micro-sphere central spark ignition method in inertial fusion and fuel pellet design condition in fusion power plant has been investigated and fuel gain for isochoric model in this method is calculated. We have shown the effects of different physical parameters of inertial fusion on fuel gain and optimized limit for fuel density and fuel pellet radius has been calculated.
We modify the Chapman sandpile model (Chapman \textit{et al} \textit{Physical Review Letters} 86, 2814 (2001)) to form comparisons with pellet pacing, which is used to reduce or eliminate ELMs in a fusion plasma. We employ a variation of that model in which a pedestal with feedback is introduced (Bowie and Hole \textit{Phys. Plasmas} 25, 012511 (2018)), which we further modify to provide for dual fuelling - sand is added both at the centre of the sandpile, and near the edge. We observe that when the additional sand is added at the top of the pedestal, MLEs are largely suppressed. While this su…
We propose a laser-driven near-solid density nano-structured micro-reactor concept operating with mixed nuclear fusion fuels. The micro-reactor is capable of making use of a range of neutronic and aneutronic fuels. Its core parts consists of an embedded nanoscopic nuclear fuel based laser-driven nano-accelerator that is capable of producing non-thermal fuel distributions almost instantly.
Sandpile models have been used to provide simple phenomenological models without incorporating the detailed features of a fully featured model. The Chapman sandpile model Chapman et al Physical Review Letters 86, 2814 (2001) has been used as an analogue for the behaviour of a plasma edge, with mass loss events being used as analogues for ELMs. In this work we modify the Chapman sandpile model by providing for both increased and intermittent driving. We show that the behaviour of the sandpile, when continuously fuelled at very high driving, can be determined analytically by a simple algorithm. …
Relativistic fluid dynamics and the theory of relativistic detonation fronts are used to estimate the space-time dynamics of the burning of the D-T fuel in Laser driven pellet fusion experiments. The initial "High foot" heating of the fuel makes the compressed target transparent to radiation, and then a rapid ignition pulse can penetrate and heat up the whole target to supercritical temperatures in a short time, so that most of the interior of the target ignites almost simultaneously and instabilities will have no time to develop. In these relativistic, radiation dominated processes both the i…
A natural fueling mechanism that helps to maintain the main core deuterium and tritium (DT) density profiles in a tokamak fusion reactor is discussed. In H-mode plasmas dominated by ion- temperature gradient (ITG) driven turbulence, cold DT ions near the edge will naturally pinch radially inward towards the core. This mechanism is due to the quasi-neutral heat flux dominated nature of ITG turbulence and still applies when trapped and passing kinetic electron effects are included. Fueling using shallow pellet injection or supersonic gas jets is augmented by an inward pinch of could DT fuel. The…
The lifetime and utilization of a nuclear fusion reactor like ITER depends strongly on its capabilities to mitigate damage during disruptions. While shattered pellet injection (SPI) was chosen as the baseline mitigation method for ITER, the exact relation of pellet injection parameters and the resulting fragment distributions is not yet clear. This knowledge is of paramount importance for optimizing the impurity deposition and disruption mitigation efficiency. In this thesis, I present fragmentation analysis of 170 SPI pellets, with the focus on the produced fragment sizes as a function of nor…
Recently, a method to achieve a "natural hot-ion mode" was suggested, by utilizing ion viscous heating in a rotating plasma with a fixed boundary. We explore the steady-state solution to the Braginskii equations and find the parameter regime in which a significant temperature difference between ions and electrons can be sustained in a driven steady state. The threshold for this effect occurs at $ρ_i\gtrsim0.1R$. An analytic, leading order low flow solution is obtained, and a numerical, moderate Mach number $M\lesssim2$ is investigated. The limitation is found to be at moderate Mach numbers.
We comment on the note "Low Q nuclear fusion in a volume heated mixed fuel reactor" by Ruhl and Korn in which hydrodynamic life-time considerations are included in estimates of ignition energy for uncompressed fusion fuel targets. For the case of DT fusion, the authors arrive at a required hot-spot energy of 1MJ. We point out that their Q = 1 estimate is not relevant for transition into a thermonuclear fusion regime, and that it is based on DT implanted in a boron-proton matrix without accounting for all consequences. Applying the proper corrections leads to an increase in the needed laser ene…
An effective disruption mitigation system in a tokamak reactor should limit the exposure of the wall to localized heat losses and to the impact of high current runaway electron beams, and avoid excessive forces on the structure. We evaluate with respect to these aspects a two-stage deuterium-neon shattered pellet injection in an ITER-like plasma, using simulations with the DREAM framework [M. Hoppe et al (2021) Comp. Phys. Commun. 268, 108098]. To minimize the obtained runaway currents an optimal range of injected deuterium quantities is found. This range is sensitive to the opacity of the pla…

The declared aim of Marvel Fusion is the realization of a reactor based on the aneutronic fusion of proton and boron-11 nuclei in the near future, making use of latest-day laser technology and nano-structured materials. The aim of the preprint quoted above is to demonstrate the feasibility of fusion energy gain from the irradiation of an initially uncompressed target consisting of an array of nano-wires, by a femto-second laser. This proposal is in apparent contrast to text-book wisdom, which postulates - even for the fast-ignitor concept, and a DT fuel mix - a target density about 1000 times …
In inertial fusion, one of scientific issues is to reduce an implosion non-uniformity of a spherical fuel target. The implosion non-uniformity is caused by several factors, including the driver beam illumination non-uniformity, the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) growth, etc. In this paper we propose a new control method to reduce the implosion non-uniformity; the oscillating implosion acceleration dg(t) is created by pulsating and dephasing heavy ion beams (HIBs) in heavy ion inertial fusion (HIF). The dg(t) would reduce the RTI growth effectively. The original concept of the non- uniformit…
Magnetized inertial fusion experiments are approaching regimes where the radial transport is dominated by collisions between magnetized ions, providing an opportunity to exploit effects usually associated with steady-state magnetic fusion. In particular, the low-density hotspot characteristic of magnetized liner inertial fusion results in diamagnetic and thermal frictions which can demix thermalized ash from fuel, accelerating the fusion reaction. For reactor regimes in which there is substantial burnup of the fuel, increases in the fusion energy yield on the order of 5% are possible.
In this review paper on heavy ion inertial fusion (HIF), the state-of-the-art scientific results are presented and discussed on the HIF physics, including physics of the heavy ion beam (HIB) transport in a fusion reactor, the HIBs-ion illumination on a direct-drive fuel target, the fuel target physics, the uniformity of the HIF target implosion, the smoothing mechanisms of the target implosion non- uniformity and the robust target implosion. The HIB has remarkable preferable features to release the fusion energy in inertial fusion: in particle accelerators HIBs are generated with a high driver…
A long-term energy option that is just approaching the horizon after decades of struggle, is fusion. Recent developments allow us to apply techniques from spin physics to advance its viability. The cross section for the primary fusion fuel in a tokamak reactor, D+T=>alpha+n, would be increased by a factor of 1.5 if the fuels were polarized. Simulations predict further non-linear power gains in large-scale machines such as ITER, due to increased alpha heating. These are significant enhancements that could lower the requirements needed to reach ignition and could be used to extend useful reactor…

Heavy ion inertial fusion (HIF) energy would be one of promising energy resources securing our future energy in order to sustain our human life for centuries and beyond. The heavy ion beam (HIB) has remarkable preferable features to release the fusion energy in inertial confinement fusion: in particle accelerators HIBs are generated with a high driver efficiency of ~ 30-40%, and the HIB ions deposit their energy inside of materials. Therefore, a requirement for the fusion target energy gain is relatively low, that would be ~50-70 to operate a HIF fusion reactor with the standard energy output …
Specific energy (i.e. energy per unit mass) is one of the most fundamental and consequential properties of a fuel source. In this work, a systematic study of measured fusion cross-sections is performed to determine which reactions are potentially feasible and identify the fuel cycle that maximizes specific energy. This reveals that, by using normal hydrogen to breed deuterium via neutron capture, the conventional catalyzed D-D fusion fuel cycle can attain a specific energy greater than anything else. Simply surrounding a catalyzed D-D reactor with water enables deuterium fuel, the dominant sto…
