We report a strong tension in $\varepsilon_K$ at the $4σ$ level between the experimental value and the theoretical value calculated directly from the standard model using lattice QCD inputs such as $\hat{B}_K$, $|V_{cb}|$, $|V_{us}|$, $ξ_0$, $ξ_2$, $ξ_\text{LD}$, $F_K$, and $m_c$. The standard model with lattice QCD inputs describes only 70% of the experimental value of $\varepsilon_K$, and does not explain its remaining 30%. We also find that this tension disappears when we use the inclusive value of $|V_{cb}|$ (results of the heavy quark expansion based on QCD sum rules) to determine $\varepsilon_K$. This tension is highly correlated with the present discrepancy between the exclusive and inclusive values of $|V_{cb}|$. In order to resolve, in part, the issue with $|V_{cb}|$, it would be highly desirable to have a comprehensive re-analysis over the entire set of experimental data on the $\bar{B} \to D^* \ell \barν$ decays using an alternative parametrization of the form factors, such as the BGL parametrization, and a comparison with results of the CLN method.
We present recent updates for $\varepsilon_K$ determined directly from the standard model (SM) with lattice QCD inputs such as $\hat{B}_K$, $|V_{cb}|$, $|V_{us}|$, $ξ_0$, $ξ_2$, $ξ_\text{LD}$, $f_K$, and $m_c$. We find that the standard model with exclusive $|V_{cb}|$ and other lattice QCD inputs describes only 66\% of the experimental value of $|\varepsilon_K|$ and does not explain its remaining 34\%, which leads to a strong tension in $|\varepsilon_K|$ at the $4.5σ\sim 3.7σ$ level between the SM theory and experiment. We also find that this tension disappears when we use the inclusive value …

We find that the standard model with exclusive $|V_{cb}|$ and other lattice QCD inputs describes only 65% of the experimental value of $|\varepsilon_K|$ and does not explain its remaining 35%, which leads to a strong tension in $|\varepsilon_K|$ at the $5.1σ\sim 3.9σ$ level between the SM theory and experiment. We also find that this tension disappears when we use the inclusive value of…
As an important step towards a complete next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD analysis of the ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), we present for the first time the NLO master formula for the BSM part of this ratio expressed in terms of the Wilson coefficients of all contributing operators evaluated at the electroweak scale. To this end we use the common Weak Effective Theory (WET) basis (the so-called JMS basis) for which tree-level and one-loop matching to the SMEFT are already known. The relevant hadronic matrix elements of BSM operators at th…
The present status of the ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ in the Standard Model (SM) is summarized. In particular we stress the differences between three approaches that attempt to calculate $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ within the SM: Lattice QCD, Dual QCD and Chiral Perturbation Theory. As presently there is still a significant room left for new physics (NP) contributions, we summarize the present status of the technology that has been recently developed with the goal to analyze $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and its correlations with other observables within the Weak Effective Theory (WET) and th…
We analyse for the first time the CP violating ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ in $K\to ππ$ decays in leptoquark (LQ) models. Assuming a mass gap to the electroweak (EW) scale, the main mechanism for LQs to contribute to $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ is EW gauge-mixing of semi-leptonic into non-leptonic operators, which we treat in the Standard Model effective theory (SMEFT). We perform also the one-loop decoupling for scalar LQs, finding that in all models with both left-handed and right-handed LQ couplings box-diagrams generate numerically strongly enhanced EW-penguin operators $Q_{8,8'}$ alre…
We present an update of our determination of the strong coupling alpha_s from the quantum chromodynamics static energy. This updated analysis includes new lattice data, at smaller lattice spacings and reaching shorter distances, the use of better suited perturbative expressions to compare with data in a wider distance range, and a comprehensive and detailed estimate of the error sources that contribute to the uncertainty of the final result. Our updated value for alpha_s at the Z-mass scale, M_Z, is alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1166^{+0.0012}_{-0.0008}, which supersedes our previous result.
For direct CP-violation in $K\toππ$ decays, the usual isospin-breaking effects at the percent level are amplified by the dynamics behind the $ΔI=1/2$ rule and conventionally encoded in $Ω_{\rm IB}$ parameters. The updated prediction $Ω_{\rm IB}^{(8)}=(15.9\pm 8.2)\times 10^{-2}$ of the Chiral Perturbation Theory for the strong isospin-breaking due to $π_3-η_8$ mixing confirms such a tendency but is quite sensitive to the theoretical input value of the low-energy constant corresponding to the flavour-singlet $η_0$ exchange contribution in this truncated octet scheme. We rather exploit the pheno…

Using the Coulomb gauge formulation of QED we present a lattice QCD procedure to calculate the $π^+π^+$ scattering phase shift including the effects of the Coulomb potential which appears in this formulation. The approach described here incorporates the effects of relativity and avoids finite-volume corrections that vanish as a power of the volume in which the lattice calculation is performed. This is the first step in developing a complete lattice QCD calculation of the electromagnetic and isospin-breaking light-quark mass contributions to $\varepsilon'$, the parameter describing direct CP vi…
