Fluctuations of the baryon number in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are a promising observable to explore the structure of the QCD phase diagram. The cumulant ratios in heavy ion collisions at intermediate energies ($\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} < 7$ GeV) have not been studied to date. We investigate the effects of mean field potential and clustering on the cumulant ratios of baryon and proton number distributions in Au+Au collisions at beam energy of 1.23 GeV$/$nucleon as measured by the HADES Collaboration at GSI. Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) and the JAM model are used to calculate the cumulants with different mean field potentials. It is found that the cumulant ratios are strongly time dependent. At the early stage, the effects of the potentials on the fluctuations of the particle multiplicity in momentum space are relatively weak. The mean fields enhance the fluctuations during the expansion stage, especially for small rapidity acceptance windows. The enhancement of cumulant ratios for free protons is strongly suppressed as compared to that for all baryons. The mean field potentials and the clustering play an important role for the measured cumulant ratios at intermediate energy.
Flow-like signals including the ridge structure observed in small collision systems that are similar to those in large collision systems have led to questions about the onset of collectivity in nuclear collisions. In this study, we use the string melting version of a multi-phase transport (AMPT) model with or without the sub-nucleon geometry for the proton to study multiparticle cumulants in $p+p$ collisions at 13 TeV. Both versions of the model produce negative $c_{2}\{4 \}$ values at high multiplicities. In addition, the dependence of $c_{2}\{4 \}$ on the parton cross section is non-monotono…
The cumulants of baryon multiplicity distribution in relativistic heavy-ion collisions (HICs) have attracted considerable attention recently. It has been conjectured that they may serve as a promising observable to detect the critical end point in the QCD phase diagram, while the cumulants in HICs at intermediate energies have not been widely studied to date. How to interpret the cumulants data at intermediate energies and compare with the data at relativistic energies is now being actively discussed. Both meam-field potential and clustering are highly important to HICs at intermediate energie…
We investigate possible effects of correlations between stopped nucleons on higher order proton cumulants at low energy heavy-ion collisions. We find that fluctuations of the number of wounded nucleons $N_{\mathrm{part}}$ lead to rather nontrivial dependence of the correlations on the centrality; however, this effect is too small to explain the large and positive four-proton correlations found in the preliminary data collected by the STAR collaboration at $\sqrt{s}=7.7$ GeV. We further demonstrate that, by taking into account additional proton clustering, we are able to qualitatively reproduce…
We study the mean-field thermodynamics and the characteristics of the net-baryon number fluctuations at the phase boundaries for the chiral and deconfinement transitions in the Hybrid Quark-Meson-Nucleon model. The chiral dynamics is described in the linear sigma model, whereas the quark confinement is manipulated by a medium-dependent modification of the particle distribution functions, where an additional scalar field is introduced. At low temperature and finite baryon density, the model predicts a first-, second-order chiral phase transition, or a crossover, depending on the expectation val…
Initial partonic eccentricities in Au+Au collisions at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV are investigated using a multi-phase transport model with string melting scenario. The initial eccentricities in different order of harmonics are studied using participant and cumulant definitions. Eccentricity in terms of second-, fourth- and sixth order cumulants as a function of number of participant nucleons are compared systematically with the traditional participant definition. The ratio of the cumulant eccentricities $\varepsilon\left\{4\right\}/\varepsilon\left\{2\right\}$ and $\varep…
We summarize the measurements investigating the nucleon spin structure done at Jefferson Lab, a multi-GeV continuous electron beam facility located in Newport News, Virgina, USA. After motivating spin structure studies, we explain how Jefferson Lab uniquely contributes to them and describe the experimental program that was achieved with energies up to 6 GeV. We then discuss the continuation of this program at the higher energies now available thanks to the recent 12 GeV upgrade of Jefferson Lab's accelerator.
We formulate a baseline model for the net-proton number fluctuations in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Our model includes total baryon number conservation, fluctuations of the participating nucleon number, limited acceptance, and a possibility that isospin is remembered by the participating wounded nucleons. Most importantly, we formulated the model as consisting of two components: wounded nucleons and the produced nucleon-antinucleon pairs. Those two components have different rapidity distributions. Owing to this feature we obtain also predictions for the rapidity dependence of the c…
Within the ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics (UrQMD) model, the effect of initial density fluctuations on cumulants of the net-proton multiplicity distribution in Au + Au Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7 GeV was investigated by varying the minimum distance $d_{\rm min}$ between two nucleons in the initialization. It was found that the initial density fluctuations increased with the decrease of $d_{\rm min}$ from 1.6 fm to 1.0 fm, and the influence of $d_{\rm min}$ on the magnitude of the net-proton number fluctuation in a narrow pseudorapidity window ($Δη\leq$ 4) was negligible e…
We posit a unified hydrodynamic and microscopic description of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in ultrarelativistic $p$-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=5.02$ TeV and evaluate our assertion using Bayesian inference. Specifically, we model the dynamics of both collision systems using initial conditions with parametric nucleon substructure, a pre-equilibrium free-streaming stage, event-by-event viscous hydrodynamics, and a microscopic hadronic afterburner. Free parameters of the model which describe the initial state and QGP medium are then simultaneously calibrated to fit …
We study clustering of baryons at the freeze-out point of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Using a Walecka-Serot model for the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction we analyze how the modified/critical $σ$ mode---responsible for the NN attraction---allows for clustering of nucleons when the system is close to a possible critical point of QCD. We investigate clusters of few nucleons, and also the internal cluster configuration when the system is long lived. For realistic heavy-ion collisions we study to how extend such clusters can be formed in a finite time, and perform the statistical analysis o…
The scalar-isoscalar mode of QCD becomes lighter/nearly massless close to the chiral transition/second-order critical point. From nuclear physics we know that this mode is the main responsible for the attractive part of the nucleon-nucleon potential at inter-particle distances of 1-2 fm. Therefore one expects that close to the critical point there is a long-range strong attraction among nucleons. Using a Walecka-Serot model for the NN potential we study the effects of the critical point in a finite system of nucleons and mesons by solving classical Molecular Dynamics+Langevin equations for the…
We report on the low and moderate Q^2 nucleon spin structure measurements done at Jefferson Lab, examining specifically the inclusive program. We discuss what the data teach us about quark confinement and the emergence of the effective hadronic degrees of freedom from the fundamental partonic ones. We show how this experimental program has reached its goal by providing a precise mapping at low, intermediate and moderately high Q^2 which has followed in many advances, e.g., with Chiral Perturbation Theory. Another example of a recent advance imputable to the JLab spin data is the improved under…

Recent studies at Jefferson Lab show that there are a certain proportion of nucleons in nuclei have momenta greater than the so-called nuclear Fermi momentum $p_{F}$. Based on the transport model of nucleus-nucleus collisions at intermediate energies, nucleon high momentum caused by the neutron-proton short-range correlations in nuclei is constrained by comparing with $π$ and photon experimental data and considering some uncertainties. The high momentum cutoff value $p_{max}$ $\leq$ 2$p_{F}$ is obtained.
The light-nuclei yield ratio is one of the candidates to probe the critical fluctuations of hot QCD matter. In this paper, we investigate the \textit{background effects}, namely the non-critical effects coming from the non-trivial thermal background, on the light-nuclei production within the framework of the coalescence model. Specifically, we analyze the impact of the equilibrium phase-space distribution function of nucleons, $f(\mathbf{r},\mathbf{p})$, on the light-nuclei yield ratio $N_tN_p/N_d^2$, where $N_t$, $N_p$, and $N_d$ denote triton, proton, and deuteron yields. By considering the …
Producing kaon mesons in heavy-ion collisions at beam energies below their threshold energy is an important way to investigate the properties of dense nuclear matter. In this study, based on the newly updated version of the ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics model, we introduce the kaon-nucleon (KN) potential, including both the scalar and vector (also dubbed Lorentz-like) aspects. We revisit the influence of the KN potential on the collective flow of K$^{+}$ mesons produced in Au+Au collisions at $E_{lab}$ = 1.5 GeV/nucleon and find that the contribution of the newly included Lorent…
Testing nuclear forces by polarization transfer coefficients in d(\vec p, \vec p)d and d(\vec p,\vec d)p reactions at E^{lab}_p = 22.7 MeV
The proton to proton polarization transfer coefficients K_x^{x'}, K_y^{y'}, K_z^{x'} and the proton to deuteron polarization transfer coefficients K_x^{x'}, K_y^{y'}, K_z^{x'}, K_x^{y'z'}, K_y^{z'z'}, K_z^{y'z'}, K_y^{x'z'} and K_y^{x'x'-y'y'} have been measured in d( \vec p, \vec p)d and d( \vec p, \vec d)p reactions at E^{lab}_p = 22.7 MeV, respectively. The data have been compared to predictions of modern nuclear forces obtained by solving the three-nucleon Faddeev equations in momentum space. Realistic (semi) phenomenological nucleon-nucleon potentials combined with model three-nucleon for…
Future experiments at the Jefferson Lab 12 GeV upgrade, in particular, the Solenoidal Large Intensity Device (SoLID), aim at a very precise data set in the region where the partonic structure of the nucleon is dominated by the valence quarks. One of the main goals is to constrain the quark transversity distributions. We apply recent theoretical advances of the global QCD extraction of the transversity distributions to study the impact of future experimental data from the SoLID experiments. Especially, we develop a simple strategy based on the Hessian matrix analysis that allows one to estimate…
Transverse-Mass Spectra in Heavy-Ion Collisions at energies E_{lab} = 2--160 GeV/nucleon
We develop a framework to relate proton number cumulants measured in heavy-ion collisions within a momentum space acceptance to the susceptibilities of baryon number, assuming that particles are emitted from a fireball with uniform distribution of temperature and baryochemical potential, superimposed on a hydrodynamic flow velocity profile. The rapidity acceptance dependence of proton cumulants measured by the HADES Collaboration in $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.4$ GeV Au-Au appears to be consistent with thermal emission of nucleons from a grand-canonical heat bath, with the extracted baryon number s…
Energy-dependent and single-energy fits to the existing nucleon-nucleon database have been updated to incorporate recent measurements. The fits cover a region from threshold to 3 GeV, in the laboratory kinetic energy, for proton-proton scattering, with an upper limit of 1.3 GeV for neutron-proton scattering. Experiments carried out at the COSY-WASA and COSY-ANKE facilities have had a significant impact on the partial-wave solutions. Results are discussed in terms of both partial-wave and direct reconstruction amplitudes.
Effects of Symmetry Energy in the Reaction 40Ca+124Sn at 140 MeV/nucleon
Motivated by the emerging possibilities to study threshold pion electroproduction at large momentum transfers at Jefferson Laboratory following the 12 GeV upgrade, we provide a short theory summary and an estimate of the nucleon axial form factor for large virtualities in the $Q^2 = 1-10~\text{GeV}^2$ range using next-to-leading order light-cone sum rules.
We explore Glauber Monte Carlo predictions for the planned ultra-relativistic ${}^{16}{\rm O}$+${}^{16}{\rm O}$ and p+${}^{16}{\rm O}$ collisions, as well as for collisions of ${}^{16}{\rm O}$ on heavy targets. In particular, we present specific collective flow measures which are approximately independent on the hydrodynamic response of the system, such as the ratios of eccentricities obtained from cumulants with different numbers of particles, or correlations of ellipticity and triangularity described by the normalized symmetric cumulants. We use the state-of-the-art correlated nuclear distri…
A parameterization of the nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering amplitude is needed for future experiments with nucleon and nuclear beams in the beam momentum range of 2 -- 50 GeV/c/nucleon. There are many parameterizations of the amplitude at $P_{lab} >$ 25--50 GeV/c, and at $P_{lab} \leq$ 5 GeV/c. Our paper is aimed to cover the range between 5 -- 50 GeV/c. The amplitude is used in Glauber calculations of various cross sections and Monte Carlo simulations of nucleon-nucleon scatterings. Usually, the differential nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering cross sections are described by an exponential e…
