Future experiments at the Jefferson Lab 12 GeV upgrade, in particular, the Solenoidal Large Intensity Device (SoLID), aim at a very precise data set in the region where the partonic structure of the nucleon is dominated by the valence quarks. One of the main goals is to constrain the quark transversity distributions. We apply recent theoretical advances of the global QCD extraction of the transversity distributions to study the impact of future experimental data from the SoLID experiments. Especially, we develop a simple strategy based on the Hessian matrix analysis that allows one to estimate the uncertainties of the transversity quark distributions and their tensor charges extracted from SoLID data simulation. We find that the SoLID measurements with the proton and the effective neutron targets can improve the precision of the u- and d-quark transversity distributions up to one order of magnitude in the range 0.05 < x < 0.6.
Nucleon transversity and single transverse spin asymmetries have been the recent focus of large efforts by both theorists and experimentalists. On-going and planned experiments from HERMES, COMPASS and RHIC are mostly on the proton or the deuteron. Presented here is a planned measurement of the neutron transversity and single target spin asymmetries at Jefferson Lab in Hall A using a transversely polarized $^3$He target. Also presented are the results and plans of other neutron transverse spin experiments at Jefferson Lab. Finally, the factorization for semi-inclusive DIS studies at Jefferson …
Precision measurements in the neutrino sector are becoming increasingly feasible due to the development of relatively high-rate experimental capabilities. These important developments command renewed attention to the systematic corrections needed to interpret the data. Hadronic multi-particle final state measurements made using CLAS at Jefferson Lab, together with a broad theoretical effort that links electro-nucleus and neutrino-nucleus data, will address this problem, and will elucidate long-standing problems in intermediate energy nuclear physics. This new work will ultimately enable precis…
Over the past decade measurements of unpolarized structure functions at Jefferson Lab with unprecedented precision have significantly advanced our knowledge of nucleon structure. These have for the first time allowed quantitative tests of the phenomenon of quark-hadron duality, and provided a deeper understanding of the transition from hadron to quark degrees of freedom in inclusive scattering. Dedicated Rosenbluth-separation experiments have yielded high-precision transverse and longitudinal structure functions in regions previously unexplored, and new techniques have enabled the first glimps…
We review the compelling case for establishing a capability to accelerate positrons at Jefferson Lab. The potential appplications range from the study of two-photon exchange and deeply-virtual Compton scattering to exploiting the charge current weak interaction to probe the flavor structure of hadrons and nuclei. There are also fascinating ideas for using such a capability to discover new physics beyond the Standard Model of nuclear and particle physics.
Long term plans for the investigation of the quark and gluon structure of matter have for some time focussed on the possibility of an electron-ion collider, with the nuclear physics communities associated with JLab and BNL being particularly active. We briefly outline the current thinking on this subject at Jefferson lab.
Recent results from JLab on the electromagnetic excitation of nucleon resonances are presented, and confronted with theoretical predictions. Preliminary data in the search for undiscovered states are discussed as well.
An overview of the CLAS12 detector is presented and the initial physics program after the energy-doubling of the Jefferson Lab electron accelerator. Construction of the 12 GeV upgrade project has started October 2008. A broad program has been developed to map the nucleon's 3-dimensional spin and flavor content through the measurement of deeply exclusive and semi-inclusive processes. Other programs include forward distribution function to large $x_{B} \le 0.85$ and of the quark and gluon polarized distribution functions, as well as nucleon ground state and transition form factors at high $Q^2$.…
Recent measurements of nucleon resonance transition form factors with CLAS at Jefferson Lab are discussed. The new data confirm the assertion of the symmetric constituent quark model of the Roper as the first radial excitation of the nucleon. For the first time, the longitudinal transition amplitude to the S11(1535) was extracted from the data. New results on the transition amplitudes for the D13(1520) resonance are presented showing a rapid transition from helicity 3/2 dominance seen at the real photon point to helicity 1/2 dominance at higher Q2. I also discuss aspects of the JLab program to…
Recent results on studies of the structure of nucleons and nuclei in the regime of strong interaction QCD are discussed. Use of high current polarized electron beams, polarized targets, and recoil polarimeters, in conjunction with modern spectrometers and detector instrumentation allow much more detailed studies of nucleon and nuclear structure than has been possible in the past. The CEBAF accelerator at Jefferson Lab was build to study the internal structure of hadrons in a regime where confinement is important and strong interaction QCD is the relevant theory. I discuss how the first experim…
We report on the low and moderate Q^2 nucleon spin structure measurements done at Jefferson Lab, examining specifically the inclusive program. We discuss what the data teach us about quark confinement and the emergence of the effective hadronic degrees of freedom from the fundamental partonic ones. We show how this experimental program has reached its goal by providing a precise mapping at low, intermediate and moderately high Q^2 which has followed in many advances, e.g., with Chiral Perturbation Theory. Another example of a recent advance imputable to the JLab spin data is the improved under…
The duality between the partonic and hadronic descriptions of electron--nucleon scattering is a remarkable feature of nuclear interactions. When averaged over appropriate energy intervals the cross section at low energy which is dominated by nucleon resonances resembles the smooth behavior expected from perturbative QCD. Recent Jefferson Lab results indicate that quark-hadron duality is present in a variety of observables, not just the proton F2 structure function. An overview of recent results, especially local quark-hadron duality on the neutron, are presented here.
Recent results from the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) program at Jefferson Lab will be presented. Approved dedicated DVCS experiments at 6 GeV and plans for the 12 GeV upgrade will be discussed.
A Jefferson Lab experiment proposal was discussed in this talk. The experiment is designed to measure the beam-target double-spin asymmetries $A_{1n}^h$ in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic $\vec n({\vec e}, e^\prime π^+)X$ and $\vec n({\vec e}, e^\prime π^-)X$ reactions on a longitudinally polarized $^3$He target. In addition to $A_{1n}^h$, the flavor non-singlet combination $A_{1n}^{π^+ - π^-}$, in which the gluons do not contribute, will be determined with high precision to extract $Δd_v(x)$ independent of the knowledge of the fragmentation functions. The data will also impose strong constraint…
We comment on the important phenomenological aspects of the recent high-statistics and wide-angle coverage $ϕ$ photoproduction data from CLAS at Jefferson Lab. The most prominent feature is a localized structure at a center-of-mass (c.m) energy $\sqrt{s} \sim 2.2$ GeV that is not expected in a simple $t$-channel Pomeron-exchange model. The structure exists only at the forward production angles that almost rules out any resonance contribution. Strong rescattering effects between the $p ϕ$ and $K^+Λ(1520)$ channels could be possible explanations. The analyses of both charged- ($ϕ\to K^+ K^-$) an…
The physics of electromagnetic excitation of nucleon resonances and of their relevance in nucleon structure studies are discussed. Preliminary data from the CLAS detector on the N-Delta(1232) transition multipoles, the helicity amplitudes of the N*(1535), and the search for so-called "missing resonances" at Jefferson Lab are presented.
The cross section of the exclusive $π^0$ and $η$ electroproduction reaction $ep\to e^\prime p^\prime π^0/η$ was measured at Jefferson Lab with a 5.75-GeV electron beam and the CLAS detector. Differential cross sections $d^4σ/dtdQ^2dx_Bdϕ$ and structure functions $σ_T+εσ_L, σ_{TT}$ and $σ_{LT}$ as functions of $t$ were obtained over a wide range of $Q^2$ and $x_B$. The data are compared with the GPD based theoretical models. Analyses find that a large dominance of transverse processes is necessary to explain the experimental results. Generalized form factors of the transversity GPDs $H_T^{π,η}$…
Low-energy neutral-current couplings arising in the Standard Model of electroweak interactions can be constrained in lepton scattering off hydrogen or a nuclear fixed target. Recent polarized electron scattering experiments at Jefferson Lab (JLab) have improved the precision in the parity-violating types of effective couplings. On the other hand, the only known way to access the parity-conserving counterparts is to compare scattering cross sections between a lepton and an anti-lepton beam. We review the current knowledge of both types of couplings and how to constrain them. We also present exp…
Decay of light quark excited baryons in the double pion channel is discussed, as a particular way of investigating poorly know baryon resonances and searching for "missing states" predicted by quark models. A possible approach to the data analysis is discussed and some preliminary data from the CLAS collaboration at Jefferson Laboratory are presented.
The CLAS and Hall A collaborations at Jefferson Laboratory have recently released new results for the ep->epγ reaction. We analyze these new data within the Generalized Parton Distribution formalism. Employing a fitter algorithm introduced and used in earlier works, we are able to extract from these data new constraints on the kinematical dependence of three Compton Form Factors. Based on experimental data, we subsequently extract the dependence of the proton charge radius on the quarks longitudinal momentum fraction.
APEX is an experiment at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) in Virginia, USA, that searches for a new gauge boson ($A^\prime$) with sub-GeV mass and coupling to ordinary matter of $g^\prime \sim (10^{-6} - 10^{-2}) e$. Electrons impinge upon a fixed target of high-Z material. An $A^\prime$ is produced via a process analogous to photon bremsstrahlung, decaying to an $e^+ e^-$ pair. A test run was held in July of 2010, covering $m_{A^\prime}$ = 175 to 250 MeV and couplings $g^\prime/e \; \textgreater \; 10^{-3}$. A full run is approved and will cover $m_{A^\prime} \sim$ 65 to …
Experiment E04-113 at Jefferson Lab Hall C plans to measure the beam-target double-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic $\vec p(e, e^\prime h)X$ and $\vec d(e, e^\prime h)X$ reactions ($h=π^+, π^-, K^+$ or$K^-$) with a 6 GeV polarized electron beam and longitudinally polarized NH$_3$ and LiD targets. The high statistic data will allow a spin-flavor decomposition in the region of $x=0.12 \sim 0.41$ at $Q^2=1.21\sim 3.14$ GeV$^2$. Especially, leading-order and next-to-leading order spin-flavor decomposition of $Δu_v$, $Δd_v$ and $Δ\bar{u} - Δ\bar{d}$ will be extracted based on the m…
This paper reports the measurement of polarized and unpolarized cross sections for the ep -> e'p' reaction, which is comprised of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) and Bethe-Heitler (BH) processes, at an electron beam energy of 5.88 GeV at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility using the Large Acceptance Spectrometer CLAS. The unpolarized cross sections and polarized cross section differences have been measured over broad kinematics, 0.10 < x_B < 0.58, 1.0 < Q^2 < 4.8 GeV^2, and 0.09 < -t < 2.00 GeV^2. The results are found to be consistent with previous CLAS data, and these…
The charge form factor of the pion is calculated for momentum transfer range of Jefferson Lab experiments. The approach is based on the instant form of the relativistic Hamiltonian dynamics. It is shown that the form-factor dependence on the choice of the model for quark wave function in pion is weak, while the dependence on the constituent--quark mass is rather significant. It is possible to estimate the mass of constituent quark and the sum of anomalous magnetic moments of $u$- and $\bar d$- quarks from the JLab experiments.
We present the recent data issued from the Halls A and B of Jefferson Laboratory for the Deep Virtual Compton Scattering Process on the proton. An important set of data for beam spin asymmetries, unpolarized cross sections and differences of polarized cross sections have been obtained. We modestly attempt a first "global" analysis of these three observables at a single $<x_B>$, $<Q^2>$ and $<-t>$ kinematic point. We find that it is extremely challenging to describe simultaneously these data in the framework of a few Generalized Parton Distributions models.
In the framework of Generalised Parton Distributions, we study the helicity-dependent and independent cross sections measured in Hall A and the beam spin asymmetries measured in Hall B at Jefferson Laboratory. We perform a global fit of these data and fits on each kinematical bin. We extract the real and imaginary parts of the Compton Form Factor $\mathcal{H}$ under the main hypothesis of dominance of the Generalised Parton Distribution $H$ and twist 2 accuracy. We discuss our results and compare to previous extractions as well as to the VGG model. We pay extra attention to the estimation of e…
I discuss recent results on the electroproduction and photoproduction of mesons in the region of non-strange baryon resonances. Results on the quadrupole transition from the ground state nucleon to the Delta(1232) show the importance of pion cloud contributions to explain the observed quadrupole transition multipoles. The excitation of the "Roper" resonance is being studied in single pion production using unpolarized cross sections measurements and beam spin asymmetries. New results on the S_{11}(1535) transition formfactor give now a consistent picture over a large Q2 range. First results on …
The E12-14-012 experiment performed at Jefferson Lab Hall A has collected inclusive electron-scattering data for different targets at the kinematics corresponding to beam energy 2.222 GeV and scattering angle 15.54 deg. Here we present a comprehensive analysis of the collected data and compare the double-differential cross sections for inclusive scattering of electrons, extracted using solid targets (aluminum, carbon, and titanium) and a closed argon-gas cell. The data extend over broad range of energy transfer, where quasielastic interaction, Delta-resonance excitation, and inelastic scatteri…
We perform a combined analysis of inclusive electron scattering data from $A=3$ nuclei in the deep-inelastic and quasielastic scattering regions, using Monte Carlo analysis methods and the nuclear weak binding approximation to establish the range over which the data can be described within the same theoretical framework. Comparison with quasielastic $^3$He cross sections from SLAC and Jefferson Lab suggests that most features of the $x \gtrsim 1$ data can be reasonably well described in the impulse approximation with finite-$Q^2$ nuclear smearing functions for momentum transfers $Q^2 \gtrsim 1…
In the paper nucl-ex/0010009 by The Jefferson Lab F_pi Collaboration the new results for the charged pion electromagnetic form factor are presented. The approach given in our paper hep-ph/9811318, "On a possible estimation of the constituent--quark parameters from Jefferson Lab experiments on the pion form factor" makes it possible to estimate the mass of constituent quark from such kind of experiment. Now this estimation gives M=0.21 GeV.
It has been shown previously [PRD 88 (2013) 093005, arXiv:1310.1770] that a non-perturbative relativistic constituent-quark model for the pi-meson electromagnetic form factor allows for a quantitative description of the soft/hard transition, resulting in the correct Quantum-Chromodynamical asymptotics, including normalization, from the low-energy data without further parameter tuning. This happens universally whenever the constituent-quark mass is switched off. The energy range where the transition happens is therefore determined by the quark-mass running at intermediate energies and is not ti…
Starting from a successful model of the pi-meson electromagnetic form factor, we calculate the similar form factor, f_K(Q^2), of the charged K meson for a wide range of the momentum transfer squared, Q^2. The only remaining free parameter is to be determined from the measurements of the K-meson charge radius, r_K. We fit this single parameter to the published data of the NA-7 experiment which measured f_K(Q^2) at Q^2->0 and determine our preferred range of r_K, which happens to be close to recent lattice results. Still, the accuracy in the determination of r_K is poor. However, future measurem…
Jefferson Lab (JLab) 12 GeV energy upgrade provides a golden opportunity to perform precision studies of the transverse spin and transverse-momentum-dependent structure in the valence quark region for both the proton and the neutron. In this paper, we focus our discussion on a recently approved experiment on the neutron as an example of the precision studies planned at JLab. The new experiment will perform precision measurements of target Single Spin Asymmetries (SSA) from semi-inclusive electro-production of charged pions from a 40-cm long transversely polarized $^3$He target in Deep-Inelasti…
The JLab 12 GeV upgrade with a proposed solenoid detector and the CLAS12 detector can provide the granularity and three-dimensional kinematic coverage in longitudinal and transverse momentum, $0.1\le x \le 0.5$, $0.3 \le z \le 0.7$ with $P_T \le 1.5 {\rm GeV}$ to precisely measure the leading twist chiral-odd and $T$-odd quark distribution and fragmentation functions in SIDIS. The large $x$ experimental reach of these detectors with a 12 GeV CEBAF at JLab makes it {\em ideal} to obtain precise data on the {\em valence-dominated} transversity distribution function and to access the tensor charg…
Recent data on the EMC effect from Jefferson Lab experiment E03103 suggest that the nuclear dependence of the high x quark distribution may depend on the local nuclear environment, rather than being a purely bulk effect. We briefly discuss the analysis and results of the E03103 experiment focusing on the light nuclei and high x region. In addition, we also discuss a future experiment at the upgraded 12 GeV Jefferson Lab facility which will further investigate the role of the local nuclear environment and the influence of detailed nuclear structure on the modification of quark distributions.
Over the past decade, new data have become available from DESY, Jefferson Lab, Fermilab, and RHIC that connect to parton propagation and hadron formation. Semi-inclusive DIS on nuclei, the Drell-Yan reaction, and heavy-ion collisions all bring different kinds of information on parton propagation within a medium, while the most direct information on hadron formation comes from the DIS data. Over the next decade one can hope to begin to understand these data within a unified picture. We briefly survey the most relevant data and the common elements of the physics picture, then highlight the new J…
We present a comprehensive new global QCD analysis of polarized inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, including the latest high-precision data on longitudinal and transverse polarization asymmetries from Jefferson Lab and elsewhere. The analysis is performed using a new iterative Monte Carlo fitting technique which generates stable fits to polarized parton distribution functions (PDFs) with statistically rigorous uncertainties. Inclusion of the Jefferson Lab data leads to a reduction in the PDF errors for the valence and sea quarks, as well as in the gluon polarization uncertainty at $x \gtrsim…

MeV-GeV dark matter (DM) is theoretically well motivated but remarkably unexplored. This proposal presents the MeV-GeV DM discovery potential for a $\sim$1 m$^3$ segmented CsI(Tl) scintillator detector placed downstream of the Hall A beam-dump at Jefferson Lab, receiving up to 10$^{22}$ electrons-on-target (EOT) in 285 days. This experiment (Beam-Dump eXperiment or BDX) would be sensitive to elastic DM-electron and to inelastic DM scattering at the level of 10 counts per year, reaching the limit of the neutrino irreducible background. The distinct signature of a DM interaction will be an elect…
In this review, we present and discuss the most recent results on inclusive and exclusive diffractive processes at HERA and Tevatron colliders. Measurements from fixed target experiments at HERMES and Jefferson laboratory are also reviewed. The complementarity of all these results is analysed in the context of perturbative QCD and new challenging issues in nucleon tomography are studied. A first understanding of how partons are localised in the nucleon to build orbital momenta can be addressed with these experimental results. Some prospects are outlined for new measurements in fixed target kin…
