The cross section of the exclusive $π^0$ and $η$ electroproduction reaction $ep\to e^\prime p^\prime π^0/η$ was measured at Jefferson Lab with a 5.75-GeV electron beam and the CLAS detector. Differential cross sections $d^4σ/dtdQ^2dx_Bdϕ$ and structure functions $σ_T+εσ_L, σ_{TT}$ and $σ_{LT}$ as functions of $t$ were obtained over a wide range of $Q^2$ and $x_B$. The data are compared with the GPD based theoretical models. Analyses find that a large dominance of transverse processes is necessary to explain the experimental results. Generalized form factors of the transversity GPDs $H_T^{π,η}$ and $\bar E_T^{π,η}$ were directly extracted from the experimental observables for the first time. It was found that GPD $\bar E_T$ dominates in pseudoscalar meson production. The combined $π^0$ and $η$ data opens the way for the flavor decomposition of the transversity GPDs. The first ever evaluation of this decomposition was demonstrated.
We demonstrate that the transversity chiral odd generalized parton distributions can be accessed through the azimuthal dependence of the nu N -> l D N' or nubar N -> l D N' differential cross sections, in the framework of the colinear QCD approach, where GPDs factorize from perturbatively calculable coefficient functions calculated up to order mc/Q.
We calculate at the leading order in $α_s$ the QCD amplitude for exclusive neutrino production of a $D^*$ or $D_s^*$ charmed vector meson on a nucleon. We work in the framework of the collinear QCD approach where generalized parton distributions (GPDs) factorize from perturbatively calculable coefficient functions. We include $O(m_c)$ terms in the coefficient functions and $O(m_D)$ term in the definition of heavy meson distribution amplitudes. The show that the analysis of the angular distribution of the decay $D_{(s)}^*\to D_{(s)} π$ allows to access the transversity gluon GPDs.
The cross section of the exclusive $π^0$ and $η$ electroproduction reaction $ep\to e^\prime p^\prime π^0/η$ was measured at Jefferson Lab with a 5.75-GeV electron beam and the CLAS detector. At low $t$, both $π^0$ and $η$ are described reasonably well by Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) in which chiral-odd transversity GPDs are dominant. Generalized form factors of the transversity GPDs $\langle H_T \rangle…

Quark and gluon helicity flip generalized parton distributions (GPDs) encode the information on the nucleon structure in the transversity sector. In order to build a theoretically consistent phenomenological parametrization for these hadronic matrix element within the framework of the dual parametrization of GPDs (or with the equivalent approach of the SO(3) partial waves (PW) expansion with the Mellin-Barnes integral techniques) we establish the set of combinations of parton helicity flip GPDs suitable for the expansion in the cross channel SO(3) PWs.
Photoproduction of a pair of particles with large invariant mass is a natural extension of collinear QCD factorization theorems which have been much studied for deeply virtual Compton scattering and deeply virtual meson production. We discuss the production of a photon and a meson, where the wide angle Compton scattering on a meson subprocess factorizes from generalized parton distribution. We calculate at dominant twist and leading order in $α_s$, the production cross-section of a transversely polarized $ρ$ meson which is sensitive to chiral-odd GPDs, and show that it may be measurable in nea…
We present the first calculation of the $x$-dependence of the isovector transversity generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for the proton within lattice QCD. We compute the matrix elements with non-local operators containing a Wilson line. The calculation implements the Breit symmetric frame. The proton momenta are chosen as $0.83,\,1.25,\,1.67$ GeV, and the values of the momentum transfer squared are $0.69,\,1.02$ GeV$^2$. These combinations include cases with zero and nonzero skewness. The calculation is performed using one ensemble of two degenerate-mass light, a strange and a charm quark…
Future experiments at the Jefferson Lab 12 GeV upgrade, in particular, the Solenoidal Large Intensity Device (SoLID), aim at a very precise data set in the region where the partonic structure of the nucleon is dominated by the valence quarks. One of the main goals is to constrain the quark transversity distributions. We apply recent theoretical advances of the global QCD extraction of the transversity distributions to study the impact of future experimental data from the SoLID experiments. Especially, we develop a simple strategy based on the Hessian matrix analysis that allows one to estimate…
Exclusive $π^0$ electroproduction at a beam energy of 5.75 GeV has been measured with the Jefferson Lab CLAS spectrometer. Differential cross sections were measured at more than 1800 kinematic values in $Q^2$, $x_B$, $t$, and $ϕ_π$, in the $Q^2$ range from 1.0 to 4.6 GeV$^2$,\ $-t$ up to 2 GeV$^2$, and $x_B$ from 0.1 to 0.58. Structure functions $σ_T +εσ_L, σ_{TT}$ and $σ_{LT}$ were extracted as functions of $t$ for each of 17 combinations of $Q^2$ and $x_B$. The data were compared directly with two handbag-based calculations including both longitudinal and transversity GPDs. Inclusion of only…
The forward limit of the chiral-odd generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and their lower moments are investigated within the framework of the chiral quark soliton model (CQSM), with particular emphasis upon the transversity decomposition of nucleon angular momentum proposed by Burkardt. A strong correlation between quark spin and orbital angular momentum inside the nucleon is manifest itself in the derived second moment sum rule within the CQSM, thereby providing with an additional support to the qualitative connection between chiral-odd GPDs and the Boer-Mulders effects. We further confirm…
Including O(m_c) terms in the coefficient functions and/or O(m_D) twist 3 contributions in the heavy meson distribution amplitudes leads to a non-zero transverse amplitude for exclusive neutrino production of a D pseudoscalar charmed meson on an unpolarized target. We work in the framework of the collinear QCD approach where chiral-odd transversity generalized parton distributions (GPDs) factorize from perturbatively calculable coefficient functions.
We calculate the amplitude for exclusive neutrino production of a charmed meson on an unpolarized target, in the colinear QCD approach where generalized parton distributions (GPDs) factorize from perturbatively calculable coefficient functions. We demonstrate that the transversity chiral odd GPDs contribute to the transverse cross section if the hard amplitude is calculated up to order mc/Q. We show how to access these GPDs through the azimuthal dependence of the nu N -> mu D N differential cross section.

We suggest that generalized parton distributions can be probed in charged current meson production process, $ep\toν_{e}π^{-}p$. In contrast to pion photoproduction, this process is sensitive to the unpolarized GPDs $H,\,E$, and for this reason has a very small contamination by higher twist and Bethe-Heitler type contributions. Since all produced hadrons are charged, we expect that the kinematics of this process could be easily reconstructed. We estimated the cross-sections in the kinematics of upgraded 12 GeV Jefferson Laboratory experiments and found that thanks to large luminosity the proces…

We calculate the leading order in $α_s$ QCD amplitude for exclusive neutrino and antineutrino production of a $D$ pseudoscalar charmed meson on an unpolarized nucleon. We work in the framework of the collinear QCD approach where generalized parton distributions (GPDs) factorize from perturbatively calculable coefficient functions. We include both $O(m_c)$ terms in the coefficient functions and $O(M_D)$ mass term contributions in the heavy meson distribution amplitudes. We emphasize the sensitivity of specific observables on the transversity quark GPDs.
Photoproduction of a pair of particles with large invariant mass is a natural extension of collinear QCD factorization theorems which have been much studied for deeply virtual Compton scattering and deeply virtual meson production. We consider the case where the wide angle Compton scattering subprocess $γ(q\bar q) \to γρ$ factorizes from generalized parton distribution. At dominant twist, separating the transverse (respectively longitudinal) polarization of the $ρ$ meson allows one to get access to chiral-odd (respectively chiral-even) GPDs. This opens a new way to the extraction of these elus…
We discuss the recent data of exclusive $π^0$ (and $π^+$) electroproduction on the proton obtained by the CLAS collaboration at Jefferson Lab. It is observed that the cross sections, which have been decomposed in $σ_T +εσ_L$, $σ_{TT}$ and $σ_{LT}$ structure functions, are dominated by transverse amplitude contributions. The data can be interpreted in the Generalized Parton Distribution formalism provided that one includes helicity-flip transversity GPDs.
We calculate in the framework of the collinear QCD approach the amplitude for exclusive neutrino-production of a pseudoscalar charmed $D$ meson. This process allows to access gluon and both chiral-odd and chiral-even quark generalized parton distributions (GPDs), which contribute in specific ways to the amplitude for different polarization states of the $W$ boson. The energy dependence of the cross section allows to separate different contributions and the measurement of the azimuthal dependence helps to single out the transversity chiral-odd GPDs contributions. The flavor dependence, and in p…
The generalized parton distributions (GPDs) provide a new description of the complex internal structure of the nucleon in terms of its elementary constituents, the quarks and the gluons. The GPDs describe the correlation between the transverse position and the longitudinal momentum fraction of the partons in the nucleon, extending the information obtained from the measurements of the form factors and the parton distribution functions. Deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS), the electroproduction of a real photon from a single quark in the nucleon, $eN \to eNγ$, is the most straightforward ex…
A measurement of the electroproduction of photons off protons in the deeply inelastic regime was performed at Jefferson Lab using a nearly 6-GeV electron beam, a longitudinally polarized proton target and the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer. Target-spin asymmetries for $ep\to e'p'γ$ events, which arise from the interference of the deeply virtual Compton scattering and the Bethe-Heitler processes, were extracted over the widest kinematics in $Q^2$, $x_B$, $t$ and $ϕ$, for 166 four-dimensional bins. In the framework of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs), at leading twist the $t$ depende…
The goal of the comprehensive program in Deeply Virtual Exclusive Scattering at Jefferson Laboratory is to create transverse spatial images of quarks and gluons as a function of their longitudinal momentum fraction in the proton, the neutron, and in nuclei. These functions are the Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) of the target nucleus. Cross section measurements of the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) reaction {ep -> ep γ} in Hall A support the QCD factorization of the scattering amplitude for Q^2 > 2 GeV^2. Quasi-free neutron-DVCS measurements on the Deuteron indicate sensitivi…
We present deeply virtual $π^0$ electroproduction cross-section measurements at $x_B$=0.36 and three different $Q^2$--values ranging from 1.5 to 2 GeV$^2$, obtained from experiment E07-007 that ran in the Hall A at Jefferson Lab. The Rosenbluth technique was used to separate the longitudinal and transverse responses. Results demonstrate that the cross section is dominated by its transverse component, and thus is far from the asymptotic limit predicted by perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. An indication of a non-zero longitudinal contribution is provided by the interference term $σ_{LT}$ also…
Positron beams, both polarized and unpolarized, are identified as essential ingredients for the experimental program at the next generation of lepton accelerators. In the context of the Hadronic Physics program at the Jefferson Laboratory (JLab), positron beams are complementary, even essential, tools for a precise understanding of the electromagnetic structure of the nucleon, in both the elastic and the deep-inelastic regimes. For instance, elastic scattering of (un)polarized electrons and positrons off the nucleon allows for a model independent determination of the electromagnetic form facto…
This report reviews the recent experimental results from the CLAS collaboration (Hall B of Jefferson Lab, or JLab) on Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) and Deeply Virtual Meson Production (DVMP) and discusses their interpretation in the framework of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs). The impact of the experimental data on the applicability of the GPD mechanism to these exclusive reactions is discussed. Initial results obtained from JLab 6 GeV data indicate that DVCS might already be interpretable in this framework while GPD models fail to describe the exclusive meson production (D…
In this paper we estimate the size of twist-3 corrections to the deeply virtual meson production in neutrino interactions due to the chiral odd transversity Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD). We conclude that in contrast to pion electroproduction, in neutrino-induced reactions these corrections are small. This happens due to large contribution of unpolarized GPDs H, E to the leading-twist amplitude in neutrinoproduction. We provide a computational code, which can be used for evaluation of the cross-sections accounting for these twist-3 corrections with various GPD models. Our results are p…
The $e p\to e^\prime p ρ^0$ reaction has been measured, using the 5.754 GeV electron beam of Jefferson Lab and the CLAS detector. This represents the largest ever set of data for this reaction in the valence region. Integrated and differential cross sections are presented. The $W$, $Q^2$ and $t$ dependences of the cross section are compared to theoretical calculations based on $t$-channel meson-exchange Regge theory on the one hand and on quark handbag diagrams related to Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) on the other hand. The Regge approach can describe at the $\approx$ 30% level most …
Unpolarized and beam-polarized four-fold cross sections $\frac{d^4 σ}{dQ^2 dx_B dt dϕ}$ for the $ep\to e^\prime p^\prime γ$ reaction were measured using the CLAS detector and the 5.75-GeV polarized electron beam of the Jefferson Lab accelerator, for 110 ($Q^2,x_B,t$) bins over the widest phase space ever explored in the valence-quark region. Several models of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) describe the data well at most of our kinematics. This increases our confidence that we understand the GPD $H$, expected to be the dominant contributor to these observables. Through a leading-twist …
In this paper we analyze in detail how the measurements of exclusive electroproduction of mesons on neutrons would complement the studies of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of the proton, providing independent experimental observables. Some of these processes on neutrons have very distinctive features, and thus we expect that measurements on liquid deuterium would allow to clearly distinguish them from similar processes on protons, giving a very clean probe of the GPD. In the case of charged meson production, all produced hadrons are charged, and for this reason we expect that the kine…
Nucleon spin structure has been an active and exciting subject of interest for the last three decades. Recent precision spin-structure data from Jefferson Lab have significantly advanced our knowledge of nucleon structure in the valence quark (high-x) region and improved our understanding of higher-twist effects, spin sum rules and quark-hadron duality. First, results of spin sum rules and polarizabilities in the low to intermediate Q^2 region are presented. Comparison with theoretical calculations are discussed. Surprising disagreements of Chiral Perturbation Theory calculations with experime…
We report the first longitudinal/transverse separation of the deeply virtual exclusive $π^0$ electroproduction cross section off the neutron and coherent deuteron. The corresponding four structure functions $dσ_L/dt$, $dσ_T/dt$, $dσ_{LT}/dt$ and $dσ_{TT}/dt$ are extracted as a function of the momentum transfer to the recoil system at $Q^2$=1.75 GeV$^2$ and $x_B$=0.36. The $ed \to edπ^0$ cross sections are found compatible with the small values expected from theoretical models. The $en \to enπ^0$ cross sections show a dominance from the response to transversely polarized photons, and are in goo…
We report measurements of the exclusive neutral pion electroproduction cross section off protons at large values of $x_B$ (0.36, 0.48 and 0.60) and $Q^2$ (3.1 to 8.4 GeV$^2$) obtained from Jefferson Lab Hall A experiment E12-06-014. The corresponding structure functions $dσ_L/dt+εdσ_T/dt$, $dσ_{TT}/dt$, $dσ_{LT}/dt$ and $dσ_{LT'}/dt$ are extracted as a function of the proton momentum transfer $t-t_{min}$. The results suggest the amplitude for transversely polarized virtual photons continues to dominate the cross-section throughout this kinematic range. The data are well described by calculatio…
Exclusive neutral-pion electroproduction ($ep\to e^\prime p^\prime π^0$) was measured at Jefferson Lab with a 5.75-GeV electron beam and the CLAS detector. Differential cross sections $d^4σ/dtdQ^2dx_Bdϕ_π$ and structure functions $σ_T+εσ_L, σ_{TT}$ and $σ_{LT}$ as functions of $t$ were obtained over a wide range of $Q^2$ and $x_B$. The data are compared with Regge and handbag theoretical calculations. Analyses in both frameworks find that a large dominance of transverse processes is necessary to explain the experimental results. For the Regge analysis it is found that the inclusion of vector m…
A multidimensional extraction of the structure function ratio $σ_{LT'}/σ_{0}$ from the hard exclusive $\vec{e} p \to e^\prime n π^+$ reaction above the resonance region has been performed. The study was done based on beam-spin asymmetry measurements using a 10.6 GeV incident electron beam on a liquid-hydrogen target and the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. The measurements focus on the very forward regime ($t/Q^{2}$ $\ll$ 1) with a wide kinematic range of $x_{B}$ in the valence regime (0.17 $<$ $x_{B}$ $<$ 0.55), and virtualities $Q^{2}$ ranging from 1.5 GeV$^{2}$ up to 6 GeV$^{2}$. The r…
