We determine the strong coupling constant $α_s$ from the static QCD potential by matching a theoretical calculation with a lattice QCD computation. We employ a new theoretical formulation based on the operator product expansion, in which renormalons are subtracted from the leading Wilson coefficient. We remove not only the leading renormalon uncertainty of $\mathcal{O}(Λ_{\rm QCD})$ but also the first $r$-dependent uncertainty of $\mathcal{O}(Λ_{\rm QCD}^3 r^2)$. The theoretical prediction for the potential turns out to be valid at the static color charge distance $Λ_{\rm \overline{MS}} r \lesssim 0.8$ ($r \lesssim 0.4$ fm), which is significantly larger than ordinary perturbation theory. With lattice data down to $Λ_{\rm \overline{MS}} r \sim 0.09$ ($r \sim 0.05$ fm), we perform the matching in a wide region of $r$, which has been difficult in previous determinations of $α_s$ from the potential. Our final result is $α_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1179^{+0.0015}_{-0.0014}$ with 1.3 % accuracy. The dominant uncertainty comes from higher order corrections to the perturbative prediction and can be straightforwardly reduced by simulating finer lattices.
We determine the strong coupling constant $α_s(M_Z)$ from the static QCD potential by matching a lattice result and a theoretical calculation. We use a new theoretical framework based on operator product expansion (OPE), where renormalons are subtracted from the leading Wilson coefficient. We find that our OPE prediction can explain the lattice data at $Λ_{\rm QCD} r \lesssim 0.8$. This allows us to use a larger window in matching, which leads to a more reliable determination. We obtain $α_s(M_Z)=0.1179^{+0.0015}_{-0.0014}$.
As higher order perturbative series are available, it is becoming necessary to include nonperturbative effects in QCD calculations using the OPE. In order to systematically determine nonperturbative effects and to incorporate them into theoretical calculations, the renormalon problem should be resolved. We use a renormalon subtraction method utilizing Fourier transform to determine nonperturbative matrix elements of HQET, $\barΛ$ and $μ_π^2$. This is the first determination performed with subtraction of the $u=1$ renormalon.
A Borel resummation scheme of subtracting the perturbative contribution from the average plaquette is proposed using the bilocal expansion of Borel transform. It is shown that the remnant of the average plaquette, after subtraction of the perturbative contribution, scales as a dim-4 condensate. A critical review of the existing procedure of renormalon subtraction is presented.
For precise QCD prediction of observables, the ambiguity due to renormalons in perturbative calculations should be appropriately separated from Wilson coefficients in the framework of the operator-product-expansion. Recently, a new method has been developed which utilizes the properties of Fourier transform to separate multiple renormalons simultaneously from the Wilson coefficients. To understand how this method works analytically, we perform a renormalon separation from various toy models with the one-loop beta function. We confirm that each of the results is consistent with the theoretical …
To improve accuracy in calculating QCD effects, we propose a method for renormalon subtraction in the context of the operator-product expansion. The method enables subtracting renormalons of various powers in $Λ_{\rm QCD}$ efficiently and simultaneously from single-scale observables. We apply it to different observables and examine consistency with theoretical expectations.
Properly separating and subtracting renormalons in the framework of the operator product expansion (OPE) is a way to realize high precision computation of QCD effects in high energy physics. We propose a new method (FTRS method), which enables to subtract multiple renormalons simultaneously from a general observable. It utilizes a property of Fourier transform, and the leading Wilson coefficient is written in a one-parameter integral form whose integrand has suppressed (or vanishing) renormalons. The renormalon subtraction scheme coincides with the usual principal-value prescription at large o…

In a recent work by some of us it was shown that the long-standing discrepancy between the QCD perturbation series for the inclusive hadronic tau decay rate computed in the CIPT and FOPT expansion approaches can be understood from the fact that CIPT has an infrared (IR) sensitivity that it not compatible with the standard form of the operator production expansion (OPE). For concrete IR renormalon models for the QCD Adler function the resulting CIPT-FOPT discrepancy, the asymptotic separation, can be calculated analytically from the Borel representation of the CIPT series expansion. If the know…
We propose a simple and easy-to-implement scheme for a renormalon-free gluon condensate (GC) matrix element, which is analogous to implementations of short-distance heavy-quark mass renormalization schemes existing in the literature already for a long time. Because the scheme is based on a perturbative subtraction at the level of the matrix element, with a freely adaptable infrared factorization scale, it can be implemented with little effort for any observable where the GC is relevant. The scheme depends on the renormalon norm of the GC which has to be supplemented independently. We apply the…
The total energy of a static quark-antiquark pair $E_{\rm tot}(r)=2m_{\rm pole}+V_{\rm QCD}(r)$ is known to be predictable up to ${\cal O}(Λ_{\rm QCD}^3 r^2)$ and ${\cal O}(\frac{Λ_{\rm QCD}^3}{\overline{m}^2})$ renormalon uncertainties in the large-$β_0$ approximation, after canceling ${\cal O}(Λ_{\rm QCD})$ renormalons. We compute the predictable part (genuine UV part) in terms of the $\overline{\rm MS}$ mass $\overline{m}$, extending a recently-proposed method which conforms with OPE. In particular the $r$-independent part is determined. The result would help understanding the nature of $E_…
We propose a clear definition of the gluon condensate within the large-$β_0$ approximation as an attempt toward a systematic argument on the gluon condensate. We define the gluon condensate such that it is free from a renormalon uncertainty, consistent with the renormalization scale independence of each term of the operator product expansion (OPE), and an identical object irrespective of observables. The renormalon uncertainty of $\mathcal{O}(Λ^4)$, which renders the gluon condensate ambiguous, is separated from a perturbative calculation by using a recently suggested analytic formulation. The…
We study the operator product expansion of the plaquette (gluon condensate) and the self-energy of an infinitely heavy quark. We first compute their perturbative expansions to order $α^{35}$ and $α^{20}$, respectively, in the lattice scheme. In both cases we reach the asymptotic regime where the renormalon behavior sets in. Subtracting the perturbative series, we obtain the leading non-perturbative corrections of their respective operator product expansions. In the first case we obtain the gluon condensate and in the second the binding energy of the heavy quark in the infinite mass limit. The …
Perturbation series in QCD are generally asymptotic and suffer from so-called infrared renormalon ambiguities. In the context of the standard operator product expansion in MS-bar these ambiguities are compensated by matrix elements of higher dimension operators, but the procedure can be difficult to control due to large numerical cancellations. Explicit subtractions for matrix elements and coefficients, depending on a subtraction scale R, can avoid this problem. The appropriate choice for R in the Wilson coefficients can widely vary for different processes. In this talk we discuss renormalizat…
I discuss various situations in which perturbative expansions are used in Yang-Mills theories with asymptotic freedom and establish the limits of its applicability.
We compute the static self-energy of SU(3) gauge theory in four spacetime dimensions to order α^{20} in the strong coupling constant. We employ lattice regularization to enable a numerical simulation within the framework of stochastic perturbation theory. We find perfect agreement with the factorial growth of high order coefficients predicted by the conjectured renormalon picture based on the operator product expansion.
I discuss similarities and differences between the resurgence program in quantum mechanics and the operator product expansion in strongly coupled Yang-Mills theories. In ${\mathcal N}=1$ super-Yang-Mills renormalons possess peculiar features that make them different from renormalons in QCD. Their conventional QCD interpretation does not seem to be applicable in supersymmetric Yang-Mills in a straightforward manner.
I summarize what we know of renormalons from the 1970s and 80s: their uses and theoretical status. It is emphasized that renormalons in QCD are closely related to the Wilsonean operator product expansion (OPE) - a setup ideally suited for dealing with the factorially divergent series reflecting infrared dynamics. I discuss a breakthrough proposal due to Uraltsev et al. to use renormalons to evaluate nonperturbative (power) corrections in the processes without OPE. Some fresh ideas which were put forward recently are briefly discussed too, with emphasis on a possible relationship between resurg…
We determine the infinite volume coefficients of the perturbative expansions of the self-energies of static sources in the fundamental and adjoint representations in SU(3) gluodynamics to order α^{20} in the strong coupling parameter α. We use numerical stochastic perturbation theory, where we employ a new second order integrator and twisted boundary conditions. The expansions are obtained in lattice regularization with the Wilson action and two different discretizations of the covariant time derivative within the Polyakov loop. Overall, we obtain four different perturbative series. For all of…
We discuss the renormalon-based approach to power corrections in non-singlet deep inelastic scattering structure functions and compare it with the general operator product expansion. The renormalon technique and its variations relate the power corrections directly to infrared-sensitive parameters such as the position of the Landau pole Λ_{QCD} or the infinitesimal gluon mass λ. In terms of the standard OPE these techniques unify evaluations of the coefficient functions and of matrix elements. We argue that in case of deep inelastic scattering there is a proliferation of competeing infrared sen…
We argue that the appearance of the Landau pole in the running coupling of QCD introduces 1/Q^2 power corrections in current correlation functions. These terms are not accounted for by the standard operator product expansion and is the price to be paid for the lack of a unique definition of the running coupling at the 1/Q^2 level. We review also possible phenomenological implications of the 1/Q^2 terms in an alternative language of the ultraviolet renormalon.
We study the infrared renormalon in the gluon condensate in the $SU(N)$ gauge theory with $n_W$-flavor adjoint Weyl fermions (QCD(adj.)) on~$\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$ with the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ twisted boundary conditions. We rely on the so-called large-$β_0$ approximation as a conventional tool to analyze the renormalon, in which only Feynman diagrams that dominate in the large-$n_W$ limit are considered while the coefficient of the vacuum polarization is set by hand to the one-loop beta function~$β_0=11/3-2n_W/3$. In the large~$N$ limit within the large-$β_0$ approximation, the W-boson, which acq…
We investigate the $u=1/2$ [$\mathcal{O}(Λ_{\rm QCD})$] and $u=3/2$ [$\mathcal{O}(Λ_{\rm QCD}^3)$] renormalons in the static QCD potential in position space and momentum space using the OPE of the potential-NRQCD effective field theory. This is an old problem and we provide a formal formulation to analyze it. In particular we present detailed examinations of the $u=3/2$ renormalons. We clarify how the $u=3/2$ renormalon is suppressed in the momentum-space potential in relation with the Wilson coefficient $V_A(r)$. We also point out that it is not straightforward to subtract the IR renormalon a…
We present results for higher order perturbative corrections to Compton scattering in the generalized Bjorken kinematics. The approach we have used is based on the combination of two techniques: conformal operator product expansion on the one side, and resummation of the fermion vacuum insertions with consequent restoration of the full QCD beta-function via the naive nonabelianization assumption, on the other. These are terms which are lost in the former approach. Due to the presence of the infrared renormalon poles in the Borel transform of the resummed amplitude the latter suffers from ambig…
We present a nonrelativistic one-particle quantum mechanics whose perturbative S-matrix exhibits a renormalon divergence that we explicitely compute. The potential of our model is the sum of the 2d Dirac $δ$-potential -- known to require renormalization -- and a 1d Dirac $δ$-potential tilted at an angle. We argue that renormalons are not specific to this example and exist for a much wider class of potentials. The ambiguity in the Borel summation of the perturbative series due to the renormalon pole is resolved by the physical condition of causality through careful consideration of the $iε$ pre…
We discuss the contribution of ultraviolet (UV) renormalons in QCD to two-point functions of quark current operators. This explicitly includes effects due to the exchange of one renormalon chain as well as two chains. It is shown that, when the external euclidean momentum of the two-point functions becomes smaller than the scale $Λ_L$ associated with the Landau singularity of the QCD one-loop running coupling constant, the positions of the UV renormalons in the Borel plane become true singularities in the integration range of the Borel transform. This introduces ambiguities in the evaluation o…
Power corrections to exclusive processes are usually calculated using models for twist-four distribution amplitudes (DA) which are based on the leading-order terms in the conformal expansion. In this work we develop a different approach which does not rely on conformal symmetry but is based instead on renormalon analysis. This way we obtain an upper bound for the contributions of higher conformal spin operators, which translates into a bound on the end--point behavior of DA. The existence of such a bound is important for proving factorization theorems. For the two-particle twist-four DA we fin…
The tau hadronic width provides a determination of the strong coupling constant alpha_s at low energies, since it can be related to a weighted integral of the Adler function in the complex energy plane. Using Operator Product Expansion, one sees that the sensitivity to alpha_s comes from the perturbative contribution, which can be obtained by integrating the perturbative expansion of the Adler function. Two different prescriptions proposed to perform this integral, called Fixed-Order Perturbation Theory and Contour-Improved Perturbation Theory (FOPT and CIPT), yield different results for the s…
Along the years, the Cornell Model has been extraordinarily successful in describing hadronic phenomenology, in particular in physical situations for which an effective theory of the strong interactions such as NRQCD cannot be applied. As a consequence of its achievements, a relevant question is whether its model parameters can somehow be related to fundamental constants of QCD. We shall give a first answer in this article by comparing the predictions of both approaches. Building on results from a previous study on heavy meson spectroscopy, we calibrate the Cornell model employing NRQCD predic…
In the context of OPE and using the large-$β_0$ approximation, we propose a method to define Wilson coefficients free from uncertainties due to IR renormalons. We first introduce a general observable $X(Q^2)$ with an explicit IR cutoff, and then we extract a genuine UV contribution $X_\mathrm{UV}$ as a cutoff-independent part. $X_\mathrm{UV}$ includes power corrections $\sim (Λ_\mathrm{QCD}^2/Q^2)^n$ which are independent of renormalons. Using the integration-by-regions method, we observe that $X_\mathrm{UV}$ coincides with the leading Wilson coefficient in OPE and also clarify that the power …
In these lectures we give a concise introduction to the ideas of renormalon calculus in QED and QCD. We focus in particular on the example of the Adler D function of vacuum polarization, and on relations between perturbative renormalon ambiguities and corresponding non-perturbative Operator Product Expansion (OPE) ambiguities. Recent work on infrared freezing of Euclidean observables is also discussed.
Precise theoretical predictions are a key ingredient for an accurate determination of the structure of the Langrangian of particle physics, including its free parameters, which summarizes our understanding of the fundamental interactions among particles. Furthermore, due to the absence of clear new-physics signals, precise theoretical calculations are required in order to pin down possible subtle deviations from the Standard Model predictions. The error associated with such calculations must be scrutinized, as non-perturbative power corrections, dubbed infrared renormalons, can limit the ultim…

The static QCD potential is analyzed in operator-product-expansion within potential-NRQCD framework when r << 1/Lambda_{QCD}. We show that the leading short-distance contribution to the potential, defined as a perturbatively computable Wilson coefficient, can be expressed, up to O(r^2), as a ``Coulomb+linear'' potential. It coincides with the ``Coulomb+linear'' potential obtained previously from the renormalon-dominance hypothesis. Non-perturbative contributions are of order r^2 and subleading.
We use improved truncated Operator Product Expansion (OPE) for the Adler function, involving two types of terms with dimension $D=6$, in the double-pinched Borel-Laplace Sum Rules and Finite Energy Sum Rules for the V+A channel strangeless semihadronic $τ$ decays. The generation of the higher order perturbative QCD terms of the $D=0$ part of the Adler function is carried out using a renormalon-motivated ansatz incorporating the leading UV renormalon and the first two leading IR renormalons. The trunacted $D=0$ part of the Sum Rules is evaluated by two variants of the fixed-order perturbation t…
We review recent studies of the operator product expansion of the plaquette and of the associated determination of the gluon condensate. One first needs the perturbative expansion to orders high enough to reach the asymptotic regime where the renormalon behavior sets in. The divergent perturbative series is formally regulated using the principal value prescription for its Borel integral. Subtracting the perturbative series truncated at the minimal term, we obtain the leading non-perturbative correction of the operator product expansion, i.e. the gluon condensate, with superasymptotic accuracy.…
In the context of the dispersive model for non-perturbative corrections, we extend the leading renormalon subtraction to NNLO for the thrust distribution in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. Within this framework, using a NNLL+NNLO perturbative description and including bottom quark mass effects to NLO, we analyse data in the centre-of-mass energy range $\sqrt{s}=14-206$ GeV in view of a simultaneous determination of the strong coupling constant and the non-perturbative parameter $α_0$. The fits are performed by matching the resummed and fixed-order predictions both in the R and the log-R matching scheme…
We perform the integration of all iterated singly-unresolved subtraction terms, as defined in ref. [1], over the two-particle factorized phase space. We also sum over the unresolved parton flavours. The final result can be written as a convolution (in colour space) of the Born cross section and an insertion operator. We spell out the insertion operator in terms of 24 basic integrals that are defined explicitly. We compute the coefficients of the Laurent-expansion of these integrals in two different ways, with the method of Mellin-Barnes representations and sector decomposition. Finally, we pre…
Theoretical predictions of the proton--neutron mass difference and measurements of the proton's charge radius require inputs from the Compton amplitude subtraction function. Model-dependent and non-relativistic calculations of this subtraction function vary significantly, and hence it contributes sizeable uncertainties to the aforementioned physical quantities. We report on the use of Feynman-Hellmann methods in lattice QCD to calculate the subtraction function from first principles. In particular, our initial results show anomalous high-energy behaviour that is at odds with the prediction fro…

In this paper we extend our previous work on gluon propagator in the Instanton Liquid Model (ILM) of the QCD vacuum. This objects presents a lot of interest for studies of the heavy quarkonium $Q\bar Q$ observables in the framework of potential Nonrelativistic QCD (pNRQCD). Our goal is to evaluate the gluon polarization operator in ILM, and understand if it gets contributions from infrared (IR) renormalons. We perform a systematic analyis, taking into account both perturbative and nonperturbative effects, and making a double series expansion in terms of the strong coupling $α_s(ρ)\sim 0.5$ (th…
We present the computation of the double real and real-virtual contributions to top-antitop pair production in the quark-antiquark channel at leading colour. The $q \bar q \to t \bar{t} g$ amplitudes contributing to the real-virtual part are computed with OpenLoops, and their numerical stability in the soft and collinear regions is found to be sufficiently high to perform a realistic NNLO calculation in double precision. The subtraction terms required at real-real and real-virtual levels are constructed within the antenna subtraction formalism extended to deal with the presence of coloured mas…
This treatment of power corrections (in a special case of Euclidean asymptotic regimes and vacuum condensates) remains exemplary. Unlike A.Mueller's 1985 "renormalon" paper, this trail-blazing Letter: 1) was based on the correct mechanism of factorization for power corrections (--> comments appended to the main text); 2) used a method (which subsequently became Asymptotic Operation; hep-ph/9703424 and refs. therein) that automatically yields exact diagrammatic formulas for the coefficients of power corrections, which directly allow non-perturbative operator interpretation (without any 'matchin…

We provide results for the one-loop triple-collinear color/spin-space splitting operators for the five possible processes, $q \to qq'\bar{q}'$, $q \to qq\bar{q}$, $q \to qgg$, $g \to gq\bar{q}$ and $g \to ggg$. The expressions are exact in dimensionally-regulated massless QCD up to a single integral, which we expand to second order in the dimensional-regularisation parameter. We also evaluate the related splitting functions. Our results are both sufficient and indispensable for the construction of subtraction and integrated-subtraction terms for triple-collinear singularities of one-loop doubl…
