The binary hard-sphere mixture is one of the simplest representations of a many-body system with competing time and length scales. This model is relevant to fundamentally understand both the structural and dynamical properties of materials, such as metallic melts, colloids, polymers and bio-based composites. It also allows us to study how different scales influence the physical behavior of a multicomponent glass-forming liquid; a question that still awaits a unified description. In this contribution, we report on distinct dynamical arrest transitions in highly asymmetric binary colloidal mixtures, namely, a single glass of big particles, in which the small species remains ergodic, and a double glass with the simultaneous arrest of both components. When the mixture approaches any glass transition, the relaxation of the collective dynamics of both species becomes coupled. In the single glass domain, spatial modulations occur due to the structure of the large spheres, a feature not observed in the two-glass domain. The relaxation of the \emph{self} dynamics of small and large particles, in contrast, become decoupled at the boundaries of both transitions; the large species always displays dynamical arrest, whereas the small ones appear arrested only in the double glass. Thus, in order to obtain a complete picture of the distinct glassy states, one needs to take into account the dynamics of both species.
The emergence of glassy dynamics and the glass transition in dense disordered systems is still not fully understood theoretically. Mode-coupling theory (MCT) has shown to be effective in describing some of the non-trivial features of glass formation, but it cannot explain the full glassy phenomenology due to the strong approximations on which it is based. Generalized mode-coupling theory (GMCT) is a hierarchical extension of the theory, which is able to outclass MCT by carefully describing the dynamics of higher order correlations in its generalized framework. Unfortunately, the theory has so …
We investigate how structural relaxation in mixtures with strong dynamical asymmetry is affected by the microscopic dynamics. Brownian and Newtonian dynamics simulations of dense mixtures of fast and slow hard spheres reveal a striking trend reversal. Below a critical density, increasing the mobility of the fast particles fluidizes the system, yet, above that critical density, the same increase in mobility strongly hinders the relaxation of the slow particles. The critical density itself does not depend on the dynamical asymmetry and can be identified with the glass-transition density of the m…
We present a model for glassy dynamics in supercooled liquid mixtures. Given the relaxation behavior of individual supercooled liquids, the model predicts the relaxation times of their mixtures as temperature is decreased. The model is based on dynamical facilitation theory for glassy dynamics, which provides a physical basis for relaxation and vitrification of a supercooled liquid. This is in contrast to empirical linear interpolations such as the Gordon-Taylor equation typically used to predict glass transition temperatures of liquid mixtures. To understand the behavior of supercooled liquid…

Colloidal mixtures represent a versatile model system to study transport in complex environments. They allow for a systematic variation of the control parameters, namely size ratio, total volume fraction and composition. We study the effects of these parameters on the dynamics of dense suspensions using molecular dynamics simulations and differential dynamic microscopy experiments. We investigate the motion of the small particles through the matrix of large particles as well as the motion of the large particles. A particular focus is on the coupling of the collective dynamics of the small and …
We present a theory for the dynamics of a binary mixture with particle size swaps. The theory is based on a factorization approximation similar to that employed in the mode-coupling theory of glassy dynamics. The theory shows that, in accordance with physical intuition, particle size swaps open up an additional channel for the relaxation of density fluctuations. Thus, allowing swaps speeds up the dynamics and moves the dynamic glass transition towards higher densities and/or lower temperatures. We calculate an approximate dynamic glass transition phase diagram for an equimolar binary hard sphe…
We present a theory for the single-particle dynamics in binary mixtures with particle size swaps. The general structure of the theory follows that of the theory for the collective dynamics in binary mixtures with particle size swaps, which we developed previously [G. Szamel, Phys. Rev. E 98, 050601(R) (2018)]. Particle size swaps open up an additional relaxation channel, which speeds up both the collective dynamics and the single-particle dynamics. To make explicit predictions, we resort to a factorization approximation similar to that employed in the mode-coupling theory of glassy dynamics. W…
Experimental studies of the glassy slowdown in molecular liquids indicate that the high-temperature activation energy $E_{\infty}$ of glass-forming liquids is directly related to their glass transition temperature $T_{\text{g}}$. To further investigate such a possible relation between high- and low-temperature dynamics in glass-forming liquids, we analyze the glassy dynamics of binary mixtures using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We consider a binary mixture of charged Lennard-Jones particles and vary the partial charges of the particles, and thus, the high-temperature activation energy …
In the quest to understand how structure and dynamics are connected in glasses, a number of machine learning based methods have been developed that predict dynamics in supercooled liquids. These methods include both increasingly complex machine learning techniques, and increasingly sophisticated descriptors used to describe the environment around particles. In many cases, both the chosen machine learning technique and choice of structural descriptors are varied simultaneously, making it hard to quantitatively compare the performance of different machine learning approaches. Here, we use three …
We present results from Langevin dynamics simulations of a glassy active-passive mixture of soft-repulsive binary colloidal disks. Activity on the smaller particles is applied according to the quorum sensing scheme, in which a smaller particle will be active for a persistence time if its local nearest neighbors are equal to or greater than a certain threshold value. We start with a passive glassy state of the system and apply activity to the smaller particles, which shows a nonmonotonous glassy character of the active particles with the persistence time of the active force, from its passive li…
Recent years have seen a rapid increase of interest in dense active materials, which, in the disordered state, share striking similarities with conventional passive glass-forming matter. For such passive glassy materials, it is well established (at least in three dimensions) that the details of the microscopic dynamics, e.g., Newtonian or Brownian, do not influence the long-time glassy behavior. Here we investigate whether this still holds true in the non-equilibrium active case by considering two simple and widely used active particle models, i.e., active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particles (AOUPs) …

We explore an idealized theoretical model for the transport of ions within highly asymmetric ionic liquid mixtures. A primitive model (PM)-inspired system serves as a representative for asymmetric ionic materials (such as liquid crystalline salts) which quench to form disordered, partially-arrested phases. Self-Consistent Generalized Langevin Equation (SCGLE) Theory is applied to understand the connection between the size ratio of charge-matched salts and their average mobility. Within this model, we identify novel glassy states where one of the two charged species (either the macro-cation or …
The morphology of a mixture made of a polar active gel immersed in an isotropic passive fluid is studied numerically. Lattice Boltzmann method is adopted to solve the Navier-Stokes equation and coupled to a finite-difference scheme used to integrate the dynamic equations of the concentration and of the polarization of the active component. By varying the relative amounts of the mixture phases, different structures can be observed. In the contractile case, at moderate values of activity, elongated structures are formed when the active component is less abundant, while a dynamic emulsion of pass…
The binary Voronoi mixture is a fluid model whose interactions are local and many-body. Here we perform molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations of an equimolar mixture that is weakly polydisperse and additive. For the first time we study the structural relaxation of this mixture in the supercooled-liquid regime. From the simulations we determine the time- and temperature-dependent scattering functions for a large range of wave vectors, as well as the mean-square displacements of both particle species. We perform a detailed analysis of the dynamics by comparing the MD results with the first-princip…
For binary solvent mixtures composed of ions and two kinds of polar solvents, electric double layer near a charged object is strongly affected by not only the binary solvent composition but also nature of solvents such as volume and dipole moment of a solvent molecule. Accounting for difference in sizes of solvents and orientational ordering of solvent dipoles, we theoretically obtain general expressions for the spatial distribution functions of solvents and ions, in planar geometry and within the mean-field approach. Although focusing on long-range electrostatic interaction, we neglect short-…

Population annealing is a sequential Monte Carlo scheme well-suited to simulating equilibrium states of systems with rough free energy landscapes. Here we use population annealing to study a binary mixture of hard spheres. Population annealing is a parallel version of simulated annealing with an extra resampling step that ensures that a population of replicas of the system represents the equilibrium ensemble at every packing fraction in an annealing schedule. The algorithm and its equilibration properties are described and results are presented for a glass-forming fluid composed of a 50/50 mix…
Water and glycerol are well-known to facilitate the structural relaxation of amorphous protein matrices. However, several studies evidenced that they may also limit fast ($\sim$ pico-nanosecond, ps-ns) and small-amplitude ($\sim$ Å) motions of proteins, which govern their stability in freeze-dried sugar mixtures. To determine how they interact with proteins and sugars in glassy matrices and, thereby, modulate their fast dynamics, we performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of lysozyme/trehalose/glycerol (LTG) and trehalose/glycerol (TG) mixtures at low glycerol and water concentrations. U…
Structural relaxation in binary hard spherical particles has been shown recently to exhibit a wealth of remarkable features when size disparity or mixture's composition is varied. In this paper, we test whether or not similar dynamical phenomena occur in glassy systems composed of binary hard ellipses. We demonstrate via event-driven molecular dynamics simulation that a binary hard-ellipse mixture with an aspect ratio of two and moderate size disparity displays characteristic glassy dynamics upon increasing density in both the translational and the rotational degrees of freedom. The rotational…
We have studied the ionic conductivity and the dipolar reorientational dynamics of aqueous solutions of a prototypical deep eutectic solvent (DES), ethaline, by using dielectric spectroscopy on a broad range of frequency (MHz-Hz) and for temperatures ranging from 128 to 283 K. The fraction of water in the DES was varied systematically to cover different regimes, starting from pure DES and its water-in-DES mixtures to the diluted electrolyte solutions. Depending on these parameters, different physical states were examined, including low viscosity liquid, supercooled viscous liquid, amorphous so…
The dynamics of a dense binary mixture of soft dumbbells, each subject to an active propulsion force and thermal fluctuations, shows a sudden arrest, first to a translational then to a rotational glass, as one reduces temperature $T$ or the self-propulsion force $f$. Is the temperature-induced glass different from the activity-induced glass? To address this question, we monitor the dynamics along an iso-relaxation-time contour in the $(T-f)$ plane. We find dramatic differences both in the fragility and in the nature of dynamical heterogeneity which characterise the onset of glass formation - t…
We explore structural correlations of strongly asymmetric mixtures of binary charged colloids within the primitive model of electrolytes considering large charge and size ratios of 10 and higher. Using computer simulations with explicit microions, we obtain the partial pair correlation functions between the like-charged colloidal macroions. Interestingly the big-small correlation peak amplitude is smaller than that of the big-big and small-small macroion correlation peaks, which is unfamiliar for additive repulsive interactions. Extracting optimal effective microion-averaged pair interactions …
We report results from the molecular dynamics simulations of a binary colloidal mixture subjected to an external potential barrier along one of the spatial directions at low volume fraction, ϕ = 0.2. The variations in the asymmetry of the external potential barrier do not change the dynamics of the smaller particles, showing Arrhenius diffusion. However, the dynamics of the larger particles shows a crossover from sub-Arrhenius to super-Arrhenius diffusion with the asymmetry in the external potential at the low temperatures and low volume fraction. Super-Arrhenius diffusion is generally observe…
