This paper introduces the first minimal solvers that jointly estimate lens distortion and affine rectification from repetitions of rigidly transformed coplanar local features. The proposed solvers incorporate lens distortion into the camera model and extend accurate rectification to wide-angle images that contain nearly any type of coplanar repeated content. We demonstrate a principled approach to generating stable minimal solvers by the Grobner basis method, which is accomplished by sampling feasible monomial bases to maximize numerical stability. Synthetic and real-image experiments confirm that the solvers give accurate rectifications from noisy measurements when used in a RANSAC-based estimator. The proposed solvers demonstrate superior robustness to noise compared to the state-of-the-art. The solvers work on scenes without straight lines and, in general, relax the strong assumptions on scene content made by the state-of-the-art. Accurate rectifications on imagery that was taken with narrow focal length to near fish-eye lenses demonstrate the wide applicability of the proposed method. The method is fully automated, and the code is publicly available at https://github.com/prittjam/repeats.
This paper presents a new deep-learning based method to simultaneously calibrate the intrinsic parameters of fisheye lens and rectify the distorted images. Assuming that the distorted lines generated by fisheye projection should be straight after rectification, we propose a novel deep neural network to impose explicit geometry constraints onto processes of the fisheye lens calibration and the distorted image rectification. In addition, considering the nonlinearity of distortion distribution in fisheye images, the proposed network fully exploits multi-scale perception to equalize the rectificat…
This paper introduces the first minimal solvers that jointly solve for affine-rectification and radial lens distortion from coplanar repeated patterns. Even with imagery from moderately distorted lenses, plane rectification using the pinhole camera model is inaccurate or invalid. The proposed solvers incorporate lens distortion into the camera model and extend accurate rectification to wide-angle imagery, which is now common from consumer cameras. The solvers are derived from constraints induced by the conjugate translations of an imaged scene plane, which are integrated with the division mode…

In document image rectification, there exist rich geometric constraints between the distorted image and the ground truth one. However, such geometric constraints are largely ignored in existing advanced solutions, which limits the rectification performance. To this end, we present DocGeoNet for document image rectification by introducing explicit geometric representation. Technically, two typical attributes of the document image are involved in the proposed geometric representation learning, i.e., 3D shape and textlines. Our motivation arises from the insight that 3D shape provides global unwa…
Elastic distortion of fingerprints has a negative effect on the performance of fingerprint recognition systems. This negative effect brings inconvenience to users in authentication applications. However, in the negative recognition scenario where users may intentionally distort their fingerprints, this can be a serious problem since distortion will prevent recognition system from identifying malicious users. Current methods aimed at addressing this problem still have limitations. They are often not accurate because they estimate distortion parameters based on the ridge frequency map and orient…
This paper presents a novel line-aware rectification network (LaRecNet) to address the problem of fisheye distortion rectification based on the classical observation that straight lines in 3D space should be still straight in image planes. Specifically, the proposed LaRecNet contains three sequential modules to (1) learn the distorted straight lines from fisheye images; (2) estimate the distortion parameters from the learned heatmaps and the image appearance; and (3) rectify the input images via a proposed differentiable rectification layer. To better train and evaluate the proposed model, we …

Compared with flatbed scanners, portable smartphones provide more convenience for physical document digitization. However, such digitized documents are often distorted due to uncontrolled physical deformations, camera positions, and illumination variations. To this end, we present DocScanner, a novel framework for document image rectification. Different from existing solutions, DocScanner addresses this issue by introducing a progressive learning mechanism. Specifically, DocScanner maintains a single estimate of the rectified image, which is progressively corrected with a recurrent architectur…

This paper introduces the first minimal solvers that jointly estimate lens distortion and affine rectification from the image of rigidly-transformed coplanar features. The solvers work on scenes without straight lines and, in general, relax strong assumptions about scene content made by the state of the art. The proposed solvers use the affine invariant that coplanar repeats have the same scale in rectified space. The solvers are separated into two groups that differ by how the equal scale invariant of rectified space is used to place constraints on the lens undistortion and rectification para…

This paper introduces minimal solvers that jointly solve for radial lens undistortion and affine-rectification using local features extracted from the image of coplanar translated and reflected scene texture, which is common in man-made environments. The proposed solvers accommodate different types of local features and sampling strategies, and three of the proposed variants require just one feature correspondence. State-of-the-art techniques from algebraic geometry are used to simplify the formulation of the solvers. The generated solvers are stable, small and fast. Synthetic and real-image e…

Nonlinear lens distortion rectification is a common first step in image processing applications where the assumption of a linear camera model is essential. For rectifying the lens distortion, forward distortion model needs to be known. However, many self-calibration methods estimate the inverse distortion model. In the literature, the inverse of the estimated model is approximated for image rectification, which introduces additional error to the system. We propose a novel distortion rectification method that uses the inverse distortion model directly. The method starts by mapping the distorted…
This paper proposes minimal solvers that use combinations of imaged translational symmetries and parallel scene lines to jointly estimate lens undistortion with either affine rectification or focal length and absolute orientation. We use constraints provided by orthogonal scene planes to recover the focal length. We show that solvers using feature combinations can recover more accurate calibrations than solvers using only one feature type on scenes that have a balance of lines and texture. We also show that the proposed solvers are complementary and can be used together in a RANSAC-based estim…

Deep learning has demonstrated its power in image rectification by leveraging the representation capacity of deep neural networks via supervised training based on a large-scale synthetic dataset. However, the model may overfit the synthetic images and generalize not well on real-world fisheye images due to the limited universality of a specific distortion model and the lack of explicitly modeling the distortion and rectification process. In this paper, we propose a novel self-supervised image rectification (SIR) method based on an important insight that the rectified results of distorted image…

Liquify is a common technique for image editing, which can be used for image distortion. Due to the uncertainty in the distortion variation, restoring distorted images caused by liquify filter is a challenging task. To edit images in an efficient way, distorted images are expected to be restored automatically. This paper aims at the distorted image restoration, which is characterized by seeking the appropriate warping and completion of a distorted image. Existing methods focus on the hardware assistance or the geometric principle to solve the specific regular deformation caused by natural phen…
