We have investigated the dilute magnetic impurity effect on the magnetic properties of a quantum spin liquid candidate Ba3ZnRu2O9 and a spin gapped compound Ba3CaRu2O9. The magnetic ground state of each compound stands against 2% substitution of magnetic impurities for Zn or Ca. We have found that the magnetic response of these impurities, which behave as paramagnetic spins, depends on the host materials and the difference of the two manifests itself in the Weiss temperature, which can hardly be explained by the dilute magnetic impurities alone in the case of Ba3ZnRu2O9. We consider a contribution from the Ru5+ ions which would appear only in the substituted Ba3ZnRu2O9 and discuss a possible physical meaning of the observed Weiss temperature.
We consider the effects of doping the S = 1/2 kagome lattice with static impurities. We demonstrate that impurities lower the number of low-lying singlet states, induce dimer-dimer correlations of considerable spatial extent, and do not generate free spin degrees of freedom. Most importantly, they experience a highly unconventional mutual repulsion as a direct consequence of the strong spin frustration. These properties are illustrated by exact diagonalization, and reproduced to semi-quantitative accuracy within a dimer resonating-valence-bond description which affords access to longer length …
In this work we investigate Ising and classical Heisenberg models for two and three dimensional lattices in presence of diluted ferromagnetic dimers. For such models the Curie temperature as a function of ratio of intra-dimer exchange coupling constant I_A and other inter-site coupling constants I_B is calculated. In case dimer is treated exactly and environment within the mean-field approach it was found that even for I_A/I_B\to\infty T_C remains finite. Similar analysis is proposed for rhombohedral phase of intermetallic compound Gd2Fe17 where so-called Fe1-Fe1 "dumbbell" forms the diluted f…
The effects of spin-1 impurities introduced in dimerized antiferromagnetic spin chains are studied using Lanczos diagonalization and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Firstly, the magnitude of the interaction between a Ni-ion replacing a Cu-ion is derived for the case study system Cu-O-Cu. Then, it is shown that the introduction of S=1 impurities leads to the suppression of the original spin gap of the dimerized system and to the enhancement of the antiferromagnetic correlations close to the impurity. These features are interpreted in terms of a valence bond picture of the ground state of both …
Heat capacity and susceptibility measurements have been performed on the diluted spin dimer compound Ba3(Mn1-xVx)2O8. The parent compound Ba3Mn2O8 is a spin dimer system based on pairs of antiferromagnetically coupled S = 1, 3d2 Mn5+ ions such that the zero field groundstate is a product of singlets. Substitution of non-magnetic S = 0, 3d0 V5+ ions leads to an interacting network of unpaired Mn moments, the low temperature properties of which are explored in the limit of small concentrations, 0<x<0.05. The zero-field heat capacity of this diluted system reveals a progressive removal of magneti…
We investigate the dephasing rate, 1/tau_phi, of weakly disordered electrons due to scattering from diluted dynamical impurities. Our previous result for the weak-localization dephasing rate is generalized from diluted Kondo impurities to arbitrary dynamical defects with typical energy transfer larger than 1/tau_phi. For magnetic impurities, we study the influence of magnetic fields on the dephasing of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations and universal conductance fluctuations both analytically and using the numerical renormalization group. These results are compared to recent experiments.
We present inelastic neutron scattering and thermodynamic measurements characterizing the magnetic excitations in a disordered non-magnetic substituted spin-liquid antiferromagnet. The parent compound Ba3Mn2O8 is a dimerized, quasi-two-dimensional geometrically frustrated quantum disordered antiferromagnet. We substitute this compound with non-magnetic vanadium for the S = 1 manganese atoms, Ba3(Mn1-xVx)2O8, and find that the singlet-triplet excitations which dominate the spectrum of the parent compound persist for the full range of substitution examined, x = 0.02 to 0.3. We also observe addit…
The single impurity Kondo model is often used to describe metals with dilute concentrations (n_i) of magnetic impurities. Here we examine how dilute the impurities must be for this to be valid by developing a virial expansion in impurity density. The O(n_i^2) term is determined from results on the 2-impurity Kondo problem by averaging over the RKKY coupling. The non-trivial fixed point of the 2-impurity problem could produce novel singularities in the heat capacity of dilute alloys at O(n_i^2).
The doping of quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the kagome lattice by non-magnetic impurities is investigated within the framework of a generalized quantum dimer model (QDM) describing a) the valence bond crystal (VBC), b) the dimer liquid and c) the critical region on equal footing. Following the approach by Ralko et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 117204 (2008)] for the square and triangular lattices, we introduce the (minimal) extension of the QDM on the Kagome lattice to account for spontaneous creation of mobile S=1/2 spinons at finite magnetic field. Modulations of the dimer density (at …
The effects of dilute Zn impurities on the uniform magnetic susceptibility are calculated in the normal metallic state for a model of the spin fluctuations of the layered cuprates. It is shown that scatterings from extended impurity potentials can lead to a coupling of the q~(pi,pi) and the q~0 components of the magnetic susceptibility chi(q). Within the presence of antiferromagnetic correlations, this coupling can enhance the uniform susceptibility. The implications of this result for the experimental data on Zn substituted YBa2Cu3O{7-delta} are discussed.
The cubic double perovskite Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$ has been investigated by the local probe techniques nuclear magnetic resonance ($^{89}$Y NMR) and muon spin rotation (muSR). Both methods confirm the absence of magnetic long-range order in this compound but find evidence for diluted localized paramagnetic moments. NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 measurements suggest a slowing down of localized spin moments at low temperatures. An increase of the muSR spin-lattice relaxation rate lambda confirms the presence of weak magnetism in Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$ . However, these findings cannot be explained by the…
We present a comprehensive experimental investigation of Yb magnetic dimers in Yb$_{0.04}$Y$_{0.96}$AlO$_3$, an Yb-doped Yttrium Aluminum Perovskite (YAP) YAlO$_3$ by means of specific heat, magnetization and high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. In our sample, the Yb ions are randomly distributed over the lattice and $\sim 7$\% of Yb ions form quantum dimers due to nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic coupling along the $c$-axis. At zero field, the dimer formation manifests itself in an appearance of an inelastic peak at $Δ\approx 0.2$~meV in the INS spectrum and a Sc…
We study the effect of impurities on the two types of spin-dimers in the hybrid chain/ladder spin 1/2 quantum magnet Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$. Four different impurities were used, namely, the non-magnetic Zn (0.0025 and 0.01 per Cu) and Al (0.0025 and 0.01 per Cu), and magnetic Ni (0.0025 and 0.01 per Cu) and Co (0.01, 0.03, 0.05 and 0.1 per Cu). These impurities were doped in high-quality single-crystals synthesized by the floating zone method. The magnetic susceptibility of pristine Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ is analyzed rigorously to confirm that at low temperatures (T $<$ 5 K), the "free…
The effects of nonmagnetic impurities on the Q=(pi,pi) spin-fluctuation spectral weight Im chi(Q,omega) are studied within the framework of the two-dimensional Hubbard model using the random phase approximation. In the first part of the paper, the effects of the nonmagnetic impurities on the magnetic susceptibility of the noninteracting (U=0) system, chi_0(Q,omega), are calculated with the self-energy and the vertex corrections using various forms of the effective electron-impurity interaction. Here, the range and the strength of the impurity potential are varied as well as the concentration o…
We study a Heisenberg S=1/2 ring-exchange antiferromagnet which exhibits a quantum phase transition from a spontaneously dimerized (valence bond solid) phase to a magnetically ordered (Neel) phase. We argue that the quantum transition is of unconventional nature; both singlet and triplet modes of high density condense as the transition is approached from the dimer side, signaling restoration of lattice symmetry. These features are consistent with "deconfined quantum criticality", of which the present model is believed to be the only example so far.
We study systems of multiple interacting quantum impurities deposited on a metallic surface in a 3D host. For the real-space two-impurity problem, using numerical renormalization group calculations, a rich range of behavior is shown to arise due to the interplay between Kondo physics and effective RKKY interactions - provided the impurity separation is small. Such calculations allow identification of the minimum impurity separation required for a description in terms of independent impurities, and thereby the onset of the 'dilute impurity limit' in many-impurity systems. A 'dilute cluster' lim…
We calculate the dephasing rate due to magnetic impurities in a weakly disordered metal as measured in a weak localization experiment. If the density n_S of magnetic impurities is sufficiently low, the dephasing rate 1/tau_phi is a universal function, 1/tau_phi = (n_S/nu) f(T/T_K), where T_K is the Kondo temperature and nu the density of states. We show that inelastic vertex corrections with a typical energy transfer Delta E are suppressed by powers of 1/(tau_phi Delta E) proportional to n_S. Therefore the dephasing rate can be calculated from the inelastic cross section proportional to pi nu …
We study theoretically the effects of strong pinning centers on a charge density wave in the limit that the charge density wave coherence length is shorter than the average inter-impurity distance. An analysis based on a Ginzburg-Landau model shows that long range forces arising from the elastic response of the charge density wave induce a kind of collective pinning which suppresses impurity-induced phase fluctuations leading to a long ranged ordered ground state. The effective correlations among impurities are characterized by a length scale parametrically longer than the average inter-impuri…
Electronic states and magnetic properties of single $Mn$ impurity and dimer doped in narrow-gap and wide-gap $III$-$V$ semiconductors have been studied systematically. It has been found that in the ground state for single $Mn$ impurity, $Mn$-$As(N)$ complex is antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling when $p$-$d$ hybridization $V_{pd}$ is large and both the hole level $E_{v}$ and the impurity level $E_{d}$ are close to the midgap; or very weak ferromagnetic (FM) when $V_{pd}$ is small and both $E_{v}$ and $E_d$ are deep in the valence band. In $Mn$ dimer situation, the $Mn$ spins are AFM coupling for …
Raman scattering studies of the frustrated spin chain system LiCu$_{2}$O$_{2}$ are reported. Two transitions into a magnetically ordered phase (taken place at temperatures $\sim$ 9 K and $\sim$ 24 K) have been confirmed from the analysis of optical properties of the samples. Interestingly, two different magnetic excitations, seen at 100 and 110 cm$^{-1}$ in the magnetically ordered phase superimpose each other independently, indicating a coherent coexistence of long-range magnetic order and dimerization. The observed phenomenon is attributed to magnetostructural peculiarities of LiCu$_{2}$O$_{…
The S=1/2 Heisenberg model is considered on bilayer and single-layer square lattices with couplings J1, J2, and with each spin belonging to one J2-coupled dimer. A transition from a Neel to disordered ground state occurs at a critical value of g=J2/J1. The systems are here studied at their dimer-dilution percolation points p*. The multi-critical point (g*,p*) previously found for the bilayer is not reproduced for the single layer. Instead, there is line of critical points (g < g*,p*) with continuously varying exponents. The uniform magnetic susceptibility diverges as 1/T^a $ with a in the rang…
We synthesize homogeneous compositions of NaLu$_x$Yb$_{1-x}$Se$_2$, connecting non-magnetic NaLuSe$_2$ to the triangular lattice spin liquid candidate NaYbSe$_2$. Thermal and magnetic properties are studied as the system evolves from one with dilute magnetic defects to one of a dense magnetic lattice. The field and temperature dependent heat capacity show the carriers of entropy crossover from isolated magnetic ions to a correlated lattice borne from spin dimers. For the dilute system we estimate the single ion anisotropy $(g_\perp/g_\parallel =3.13)$ and also the dimer exchange couplings $J_\…
We study S=1/2 dimers which are weakly coupled by three-dimensional antiferromagnetic interactions J'. It is commonly known that doping with non-magnetic impurities immediately induces a long-range Neel order. We show that application of an external magnetic field H may drive the system back to a disordered phase. We discuss the zero temperature phase diagram in the (H,J') plane and we propose suggestions for experiments.
Motivated by recent nuclear magnetic resonance experiments on ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$, we present an exact-diagonalization study of the combined effects of non-magnetic impurities and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions in the $s = 1/2$ kagome antiferromagnet. The local response to an applied field and correlation-matrix data reveal that the dimer freezing which occurs around each impurity for $D = 0$ persists at least up to $D/J\simeq 0.06$, where $J$ and $D$ denote respectively the exchange and DM interaction energies. The phase transition to the ($Q = 0$) semiclassical, 120$^\circ$ state…
Using high frequency (up to 450 GHz) ESR and low temperature specific heat measurements we find that insertion of 1% Fe and 2% Co damps spin-Peierls and Neel transitions and for T<30K gives rise to onset of a quantum critical behaviour characteristic for a random dimer Griffiths phase.
We show that doping a Majumdar--Ghosh chain with non-magnetic impurities does {\it not} produce almost free spins 1/2. The difference between this system and other spin liquids, such as unfrustrated spin ladders, is illustrated in the context of the general dimerized, frustrated spin chain. By detailed analysis of the excitation spectra of finite chains with two impurities, we investigate the evolution of the screening affecting impurity-induced free spins, and of the sign and magnitude of their effective interactions. We comment on a possible connection to impurity-doping experiments in CuGeO…
The development of long-range ferromagnetic (FM) order in dilute magnetic topological insulators can induce dissipationless electronic surface transport via the quantum anomalous Hall effect. We measure the magnetic excitations in a prototypical magnetic topological crystalline insulator, Sn$_{0.95}$Mn$_{0.05}$Te, using inelastic neutron scattering. Neutron diffraction and magnetization data indicate that our Sn$_{0.95}$Mn$_{0.05}$Te sample has no FM long-range order above a temperature of 2 K. However, we observe slow, collective FM fluctuations ($<$~70 $μ$eV), indicating proximity to FM orde…
Systematic theoretical results for the effects of a dilute concentration of magnetic impurities on the thermodynamic and transport properties in the region around the quantum critical point of a ferromagnetic transition are obtained. In the quasi-classical regime, the dynamical spin fluctuations enhance the Kondo temperature. This energy scale decreases rapidly in the quantum fluctuation regime, where the properties are those of a line of critical points of the multichannel Kondo problem with the number of channels increasing as the critical point is approached, except at unattainably low temp…
We consider the dimerized spin-1 $XXZ$ chain with single-ion anisotropy $D$. In absence of an explicit dimerization there are three phases: a large-$D$, an antiferromagnetically ordered and a Haldane phase. This phase structure persists up to a critical dimerization, above which the Haldane phase disappears. We show that for weak dimerization the phases are separated by Gaussian and Ising quantum phase transitions. One of the Ising transitions terminates in a critical point in the universality class of the dilute Ising model. We comment on the relevance of our results to experiments on quasi-o…
Skyrmions are topologically protected field configurations with particle-like properties that play important roles in various fields of science. Recently, skyrmions have been directly observed in chiral magnets. Here, we investigate the effects of nonmagnetic impurities (structural point-like defects) on the different initial states (random or helical states) and on the formation of the skyrmion crystal in a discrete lattice. By using first-principle calculations and Monte Carlo techniques, we have shown that even a small percentage of spin vacancies present in the chiral magnetic thin film af…
Using a recently developed semi-analytical method (Self-Consistent Local RPA or SC-LRPA) we study the stability of the ferromagnetic phase in diluted magnetic systems where the exchange coupling between magnetic impurities are of RKKY form. A short discussion of the relevance of these calculations with respect to the ferromagnetism observed in diluted ferromagnetic materials is provided. Then, within a two step approach, we study ferromagnetism in $Zn_{1-x}Cr_{x}Te$. In the first step of our study, we calculate the magnetic couplings between Mn impurities within the LDA. In the second step, we…
We study the two-impurity Anderson model for a semiconductor host using the quantum Monte Carlo technique. We find that the impurity spins exhibit ferromagnetic correlations with a range which can be much more enhanced than in a half-filled metallic band. In particular, the range is longest when the Fermi level is located above the top of the valence band and decreases as the impurity bound state becomes occupied. Comparisons with the photoemission and optical absorption experiments suggest that this model captures the basic electronic structure of Ga_{1-x}Mn_xAs, the prototypical dilute magne…
The magnetocaloric effect in a two-dimensional Ising model is considered for different ratios between parameters of inter-site repulsion of nonmagnetic impurities and exchange coupling. Classical Monte Carlo simulations on a square lattice show that in case of weak coupling and at sufficiently high concentrations of nonmagnetic impurities the long-range ferromagnetic ordering breaks down to give isolated spin clusters in the ground state of the system. This leads to appearance of a paramagnetic response in the system at the zero temperature and nonzero entropy of the ground state. The feasibil…
The local enhancement of antiferromagnetic correlations near vacancies observed in a variety of spin systems is analyzed in a single framework. Variational calculations suggest that the resonating-valence-bond character of the spin correlations at short distances is responsible for the enhancement. Numerical results for uniform spin chains, with and without frustration, dimerized chains, ladders, and two dimensional clusters are in agreement with our conjecture. This short distance phenomenon occurs independently of the long distance behavior of the spin correlations in the undoped system. Exp…
The electronic structure of diluted magnetic semiconductors is studied, especially focusing on the hole character. The Haldane-Anderson model is extend to a magnetic impurity, and is analyzed in the Hartree-Fock approximation. Due to the strong hybridization of an impurity d-states with host p-states, it is shown that holes are created in the valence band, at the same time the localized magnetic moments are formed. These holes are weakly bound around the impurity site with the characteristic length of several lattice constants. For the case of the two impurities, it is found that when the sepa…
Earlier a magnetic anisotropy for magnetic impurities nearby the surface of non-magnetic host was proposed in order to explain the size dependence of the Kondo effect in dilute magnetic alloys. Recently Giordano has measured the magnetoresistance of dilute Au(Fe) films for different thicknesses well above the Kondo temperature $T_K$. In this way he verified the existence of that anisotropy even for such a case where the Kondo effect is not dominating. For detailed comparison of that suggestion with experiments, the magnetic field dependence of the magnetoresistance is calculated in the lowest …
We report resistivity measurements from 0.03 K to 10 K in a dilute high mobility 2D electron system. Using an undoped GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction in a gated field-effect transistor geometry, a wide range of densities, $0.16 \times 10^{10} {cm}^{-2}$ to $7.5 \times 10^{10} {cm}^{-2}$, are explored. For high densities, the results are quantitatively shown to be due to scattering by acoustic phonons and impurities. In an intermediate range of densities, a peak in the resistivity is observed for temperatures below 1 K. This non-monotonic resistivity can be understood by considering the known scatte…
It is a salient experimental fact that a large fraction of candidate spin liquid materials freeze as the temperature is lowered. The question naturally arises whether such freezing is intrinsic to the spin liquid ("disorder-free glassiness") or extrinsic, in the sense that a topological phase simply coexists with standard freezing of impurities. Here, we demonstrate a surprising third alternative, namely that freezing and topological liquidity are inseparably linked. The topological phase reacts to the introduction of disorder by generating degrees of freedom of a new type (along with interact…
A theory for treating the unconventional non-Fermi liquid temperature dependence of physical quantities, such as the resistivity, in the Pr-based two-channel Anderson impurities system is developed. It is shown that their temperature dependences are essentially the same as those in the pure lattice system except for the case of extremely low concentration of Pr ions that is difficult to realize by a controlled experiments. This result is consistent with recent observations in diluted Pr-1-2-20 system Y$_{1-x}$Pr$_x$Ir$_2$Zn$_{20}$ ($x=0.024,\,0.044,\,0.085,$ and $0.44$) reported in Yamane $et\…
This paper has been withdrawn by the authors, since we have come to believe that the present approach is not convergent at small doping. We will shortly submit an improved theory of the tJJ' model at small J/t in the dilute hole limit. This will be a new submission will go by a different submission number.
We report the observation of the fractional quantum Hall effect in the lowest Landau level of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES), residing in the diluted magnetic semiconductor Cd(1-x)Mn(x)Te. The presence of magnetic impurities results in a giant Zeeman splitting leading to an unusual ordering of composite fermion Landau levels. In experiment, this results in an unconventional opening and closing of fractional gaps around filling factor v = 3/2 as a function of an in-plane magnetic field, i.e. of the Zeeman energy. By including the s-d exchange energy into the composite Landau level spe…
Ba3Mn2O8 is a hexagonally coordinated Mn5+ S=1 spin dimer system with small uniaxial single-ion anisotropy. 135,137Ba NMR spectroscopy is used to establish the lower critical field Hc1 of distinct field-induced phases for H parallel to c,H perpendicular to c, and measure the longitudinal (Ml) and transverse (Mt) magnetizations in the vicinity of the quantum critical point (QCP). Ml_parallel (T, Hc1), Ml_perpendicular (T, Hc1) are reproduced by solving a low-energy model for a dilute gas of interacting bosons. Ml_parallel(T goes to 0, H = Hc1) (Ml_perpendicular(T goes to 0, H = Hc1)) follows th…
We examine the quality of the local self-energy approximation, applied here to models of multiple quantum impurities coupled to an electronic bath. The local self-energy is obtained by solving a single-impurity Anderson model in an effective medium that is determined self-consistently, similar to the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) for correlated lattice systems. By comparing to exact results obtained using the numerical renormalization group, we determine situations where "impurity-DMFT" is able to capture the physics of highly inhomogeneous systems, and those cases where it fails. For two…
The electrical resistivity including the Kondo resistivity increase at low temperature is calculated for thin films of dilute magnetic alloys. Assuming that in the non-magnetic host the spin-orbit interaction is strong like in Au and Cu, the magnetic impurities have a surface anisotropy calculated in part I. That anisotropy hinders the motion of the spin. Including that anisotropy the effective electron-impurity coupling is calculated by using the second order renormalization group equations. The amplitude of the Kondo resistivity contribution is reduced as the position of the impurity approac…
We derive a kinetic theory capable of dealing both with large spin-orbit coupling and Kondo screening in dilute magnetic alloys. We obtain the collision integral non-perturbatively and uncover a contribution proportional to the momentum derivative of the impurity scattering S-matrix. The latter yields an important correction to the spin diffusion and spin-charge conversion coefficients, and fully captures the so-called side-jump process without resorting to the Born approximation (which fails for resonant scattering), or to otherwise heuristic derivations. We apply our kinetic theory to a quan…
Anomalous thermal behavior on the EPR linewidths of Gd impurities diluted in Ce compounds has been observed. In metals, the local magnetic moment EPR linewidth, ΔH, is expected to increase linearly with the temperature. In contrast, in Ce_{x}La_{1-x}Os_{2} the Gd EPR spectra show a nonlinear increase. In this work, the mechanisms that are responsible for the thermal behavior of the EPR lines in Ce_{x}La_{1-x}Os_{2} are examined. We show that the exchange interaction between the local magnetic moments and the conduction electrons are responsible for the narrowing of the spectra at low temperatu…
The state of art in the theoretical and experimental studies of transition metal doped oxides (dilute magnetic dielectrics) is reviewed. The available data show that the generic non-equilibrium state of oxide films doped with magnetic impurities may either favor ferromagnetism with high Curie temperature or result in highly inhomogeneous state without long-range magnetic order. In both case concomitant defects (vacancies, interstitial ions play crucial part.
We investigate the extrinsic spin Hall effect in the electron gas model due to magnetic impurities, by focusing on Ce- and Yb-impurities. In the dilute limit, the skew scattering term dominates the side jump term. For Ce-impurities, the spin Hall angle $α_{\rm SH}$ due to skew scattering is given by $-8π\sinδ_2/7$, where $δ_2 (\ll 1)$ is the phase shift for$d (l=2)$ partial wave. Since $α_{\rm SH}$ reaches $O(10^{-1})$ if $δ_2 \simge 0.03$, the spin Hall effect is anticipated to be considerable in metals with rare-earth impurities. The giant extrinsic SHE originates from the large orbital angu…
We show that dilute magnetic impurities in a conventional superconductor give origin to an odd-frequency component of superconductivity, manifesting itself in Yu-Shiba-Rusinov bands forming within the bulk superconducting gap. Our results are obtained in a general model solved within the dynamical mean field theory. By exploiting a disorder analysis and the limit to a single impurity, we are able to provide general expressions that can be used to extract explicitly the odd-frequency superconducting function from scanning tunneling measurements.
We investigate the emergent impurity-induced states arising from point-like scatterers in the spin-density wave phase of iron-based superconductors within a microscopic five-band model. Independent of the details of the band-structure and disorder potential, it is shown how stable magnetic (pi,pi) unidirectional nematogens are formed locally by the impurities. Interestingly, these nematogens exhibit a dimer structure in the electronic density, are directed along the antiferromagnetic a-axis, and have typical lengths of order 10 lattice constants in excellent agreement with recent scanning tunn…
The problem of diluted two-dimensional (2D) quantum antiferromagnet (AF) on a square lattice is studied using spin-wave theory. The influence of impurities on static and dynamic properties is investigated and a good agreement with experiments and Monte Carlo (MC) data is found. The hydrodynamic description of spin-waves breaks down at characteristic wavelengths $Λ\agt\exp(\frac{const}{x})$, $x$ being an impurity concentration, while the order parameter is free from anomalies. We argue that this dichotomy originates from strong scattering of the low-energy excitations in 2D.
Nanoscale inhomogeneities and impurity clustering are often found to drastically affect the magnetic and transport properties in disordered/diluted systems, giving rise to rich and complex phenomena. However, the physics of these systems still remains to be explored in more details as can be seen from the scarce literature available. We present a detailed theoretical analysis of the effects of nanoscale inhomogeneities on the spin excitation spectrum in diluted magnetic systems. The calculations are performed on relatively large systems (up to $N$=$66^3$). It is found that even low concentrati…

We present a realistic study for electronic and magnetic properties in dilute magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As. A multi-orbital Haldane-Anderson model parameterized by density-functional calculations is presented and solved with the Hirsch-Fye quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. Results well reproduce experimental results in the dilute limit. When the chemical potential is located between the top of the valence band and an impurity bound state, a long-range ferromagnetic correlations between the impurities, mediated by antiferromagnetic impurity-host couplings, are drastically developed. We observe…
We calculate magnetic couplings in the $J_{pd}$ model for dilute magnets, in order both to identify the relevant parameters which control ferromagnetism and also to bridge the gap between first principle calculations and model approaches. The magnetic exchange interactions are calculated non-perturbatively and disorder in the configuration of impurities is treated exacly, allowing us to test the validity of effective medium theories. Results differ qualitatively from those of weak coupling. In contrast to mean field theory, increasing $J_{pd}$ may not favor high Curie temperatures: $T_C$ scale…
It is well-known that magnetic impurities can change the symmetry class of disordered metallic systems by breaking spin and time-reversal symmetry. At low temperature these symmetries can be restored by Kondo screening. It is also known that at the Anderson metal-insulator transition, wave functions develop multifractal fluctuations with power law correlations. Here, we consider the interplay of these two effects. We show that multifractal correlations open local pseudogaps at the Fermi energy at some random positions in space. When dilute magnetic impurities are at these locations, Kondo scre…
The role of the spin-phonon coupling in spin-Peierls chains doped with spin-0 or spin-1 impurities is investigated by various numerical methods such as exact diagonalization, quantum Monte Carlo simulations and Density Matrix Renormalization Group. Various treatments of the lattice, in a fully quantum mechanical way, classically in the adiabatic approximation or using a fixed three-dimensional dimerization pattern are compared. For an isolated chain, strong bonds form between the two spin-1/2 sites next to the impurity site, leading to the appearance of magneto-elastic solitons. We also show t…
In magnets with strong quantum fluctuations, paramagnetic ground states with or without confinement of spinon excitations can be realized. Here we discuss the physics of the confined phase in the vicinity of a confinement--deconfinement transition: This regime, likely relevant to a multitude of frustrated spin systems, is characterized by multiple length scales: In addition to the magnetic correlation length, a confinement length can be defined, which can be probed, e.g., by local static measurements near non-magnetic impurities. We illustrate the ideas by explicit calculations for dimerized s…
The S=1/2 Heisenberg bilayer antiferromagnet with randomly removed inter-layer dimers is studied using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. A zero-temperature multi-critical point (p*,g*) at the classical percolation density p=p* and inter-layer coupling g* approximately 0.16 is demonstrated. The quantum critical exponents of the percolating cluster are determined using finite-size scaling. It is argued that the associated finite-temperature quantum critical regime extends to zero inter-layer coupling and could be relevant for antiferromagnetic cuprates doped with non-magnetic impurities.
