The interfaces in hybridized structures could give rise to rich phenomena, which open the way to novel devices with extraordinary performance. Here, we investigate the interface-related spin transport properties in Fe|Au bilayer based on first-principle calculation. We find that the spin Hall current in the Au side near the interface flows in the opposite direction to the bulk spin Hall current with the magnitude sensitive to the magnetization direction of Fe. This negative interfacial contribution is attributed to the spin dependent transmission within a few atomic layers, where a strong interfacial Rashba spin-orbit coupling exists. Surprisingly, the interfacial spin Hall currents are found to be not confined at the interface but extend tens of nanometers at low temperature, which is limited by momentum scattering and therefore much shorter than the spin diffusion length. In addition, the interfacial swapping spin currents, as a consequence of the spin precession under the interfacial Rashba field, are also obtained from our calculation and complete the full spin transport picture with all non-vanishing components. Our results suggest the importance of the interface engineering in spin-related transport in ferromagnetic|non-magnetic heterostructures and the possibility of manipulating the interfacial transport by the magnetization orientation of the magnetic layer.
Planar spin transport in disordered ultrathin magnetic bilayers comprising a ferromagnet and a normal metal (typically used for spin pumping, spin Seebeck and spin-orbit torque experiments) is investigated theoretically. Using a tight-binding model that treats extrinsic spin Hall effect, spin swapping and spin relaxation on equal footing, we show that the nature of spin-orbit coupled transport dramatically depends on ratio between the layers thickness $d$ and the mean free path $λ$. While spin Hall effect dominates in the diffusive limit ($d\ggλ$), spin swapping dominates in Knudsen regime ($d…
Based on a multi-scale calculations, combining ab-initio methods with spin dynamics simulations, we perform a detailed study of the magnetic behavior of Ni2MnAl/Fe bilayers. Our simulations show that such a bilayer exhibits a small exchange bias effect when the Ni2MnAl Heusler alloy is in a disordered B2 phase. Additionally, we present an effective way to control the magnetic structure of the Ni2MnAl antiferromagnet, in the pseudo-ordered B2-I as well as the disordered B2 phases, via a spin-flop coupling to the Fe layer.
As nanomagnetic devices scale to smaller sizes, spin-orbit coupling due to the broken structural inversion symmetry at interfaces becomes increasingly important. Here we study interfacial spin-orbit coupling effects in magnetic bilayers using a simple Rashba model. The spin-orbit coupling introduces chirality into the behavior of the electrons and through them into the energetics of the magnetization. In the derived form of the magnetization dynamics, all of the contributions that are linear in the spin-orbit coupling follow from this chirality, considerably simplifying the analysis. For these…
Oxide interfaces are a source of spin-orbit coupling which can lead to novel spin-to-charge conversion effects. In this work the contribution of the Bi$_2$O$_3$ interface to the anomalous Hall effect of Co is experimentally studied in Co/Bi$_2$O$_3$ bilayers. We evidence a variation of 40% in the AHE of Co when a Bi$_2$O$_3$ capping layer is added to the ferromagnet. This strong variation is attributed to an additional source of asymmetric transport in Co/Bi$_2$O$_3$ bilayers that originates from the Co/Bi$_2$O$_3$ interface and contributes to the skew scattering.
The concept of swapping the two most important spin interactions -- exchange and spin-orbit coupling -- is proposed based on two-dimensional multilayer van der Waals heterostructures. Specifically, we show by performing realistic ab initio simulations, that a single device consisting of a bilayer graphene sandwiched by a 2D ferromagnet Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ (CGT) and a monolayer WS$_2$, is able not only to generate, but also to swap the two interactions. The highly efficient swapping is enabled by the interplay of gate-dependent layer polarization in bilayer graphene and short-range spin-orbit an…
It is shown that exciton swapping between two graphene sheets may occur under specific conditions. A magnetically tunable optical filter is described to demonstrate this new effect. Mathematically, it is shown that two turbostratic graphene layers can be described as a "noncommutative" two-sheeted (2+1)-spacetime thanks to a formalism previously introduced for the study of braneworlds in high energy physics. The Hamiltonian of the model contains a coupling term connecting the two layers which is similar to the coupling existing between two braneworlds at a quantum level. In the present case, t…
The electronic states of a single Bi(111) bilayer and its edges, suggested as a two dimensional topological insulator, are investigated by scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and first-principles calculations. Well-ordered bilayer films and islands with zigzag edges are grown epitaxially on a cleaved Bi$_{2}$Te$_{2}$Se crystal. The calculation shows that the band gap of the Bi bilayer closes with a formation of a new but small hybridization gap due to the strong interaction between Bi and Bi$_{2}$Te$_{2}$Se. Nevertheless, the topological nature of the Bi bilayer and the topological edge stat…
Finding efficient ways of manipulating magnetic bits is one of the core goals in spintronic research. Electrically-generated spin-orbit torques (SOTs) are good candidates for this and the search for materials capable of generating highly-efficient SOTs has gained a lot of traction in the recent years. While antiferromagnet/ferromagnet bilayer structures have been employed extensively for passive applications, e.g. by using exchange bias fields, their active properties are not yet widely employed. Here we show the presence of large interfacial SOTs in bilayer of a ferromagnet and the two-dimens…
The interfacial coupling between electrons and magnons in adjacent layers can mediate an attractive electron-electron interaction and induce superconductivity. We consider magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene sandwiched between two ferromagnetic insulators to optimize this effect. As a result, magnons induce an interlayer superconducting state characterized by $p$-wave symmetry. We investigate two candidate ferromagnets. The van der Waals ferromagnet CrI$_3$ stands out because it allows compression to tune the superconducting state with an exponential sensitivity. This control adds a new dimen…
The spin pumping mechanism and associated interfacial Gilbert damping are demonstrated in ion-beam sputtered Co2FeAl (CFA) /Mo bilayer thin films employing ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The dependence of the net spin current transportation on Mo layer thickness, 0 to 10 nm, and the enhancement of the net effective Gilbert damping are reported. The experimental data has been analyzed using spin pumping theory in terms of spin current pumped through the ferromagnet /nonmagnetic metal interface to deduce the effective spin mixing conductance and the spin-diffusion length, which are estima…
The thickness dependence of spin-orbit torque and magnetoresistance in ferromagnet/heavy-metal bilayers is studied using the first-principles non-equilibrium Green's function formalism combined with the Anderson disorder model. A systematic expansion in orthogonal vector spherical harmonics is used for the angular dependence of the torque. The damping-like torque in Co/Pt and Co/Au bilayers can be described as a sum of the spin-Hall contribution, which increases with thickness in agreement with the spin-diffusion model, and a comparable interfacial contribution. The magnetoconductance in the p…
Using the first-principles non-equilibrium Green's function technique with supercell disorder averaging, we study the influence of interfacial intermixing on the spin-orbit torque in Co$\mid$Pt bilayers. Intermixing is modeled by inserting one or more monolayers of a disordered CoPt alloy between Co and Pt. Dampinglike torque is moderately enhanced by interfacial intermixing, while the fieldlike torque, which is small for abrupt interfaces, is strongly enhanced and becomes comparable to the dampinglike torque. The enhancement of the fieldlike torque is attributed to the interface between Co an…
After one decade of the intensive theoretical and experimental explorations, whether interfacial spin-orbit coupling (ISOC) at metallic magnetic interfaces can effectively generate a spin current has remained in dispute. Here, utilizing the Ti/FeCoB bilayers that are unique for the negligible bulk spin Hall effect and the strong tunable ISOC, we establish that there is no significant charge-to-spin conversion at magnetic interfaces via spin-orbit filtering effect or Rashba-Edelstein(-like) effect even when the ISOC is stronger than that of a typical Pt/ferromagnet interface and can promote str…

We study a bilayer structure consisting of an antiferromagnetic insulator and a normal metal. An electron current is driven in the normal metal with direction parallel to the interface between the materials. Due to interfacial exchange coupling between the localized spins in the antiferromagnet and the itinerant electrons in the normal metal, a magnon current can then be induced in the antiferromagnet. Using an uncompensated antiferromagnetic interface, creating an asymmetry in the interfacial coupling to the two degenerate magnon modes, we find that it is possible to generate a magnon spin-cu…
MXene-based heterostructures have received considerable interest owing to their unique properties. Herein, we examine various heterostructures of a prototypical MXene and graphene using density functional theory. We find that the adhesion energy, charge transfer, and band structure of these heterostructures are sensitive not only to the surface functional group, but also to the stacking order. Difference in work function dictates the direction and amount of electron transfer across the interface, which causes a shift in the Dirac point of the graphene bands in the heterostructures of monolayer…
Charge transfer is of particular importance in manipulating the interface physics in transition-metal oxide heterostructures. In this work, we have fabricated epitaxial bilayers composed of polar 3d LaMnO3 and nonpolar 5d SrIrO3. Systematic magnetic measurements reveal an unexpectedly large exchange bias effect in the bilayer, together with a dramatic enhancement of the coercivity of LaMnO3. Based on first-principles calculations and x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements, such a strong interfacial magnetic coupling is found closely associated with the polar nature of LaMnO3 and the strong…
Realization of high-quality van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures with tailored properties by stacking two-dimensional (2D) layers requires atomically clean interfaces. Because of strong adhesion between the constituent layers, the vdW forces could drive trapped contaminants together into submicron-size bubbles, which leaves large interfacial areas atomically clean. Such a phenomenon is dubbed self-cleaning mechanism in 2D systems. Here, we demonstrate the breakdown of self-cleaning mechanism for nanoscale interfacial bubbles in tiny-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). In the tiny-angle TBG, …
Although many prototype devices based on two-dimensional (2D) MoS2 have been fabricated and wafer scale growth of 2D MoS2 has been realized, the fundamental nature of 2D MoS2-metal contacts has not been well understood yet. We provide a comprehensive ab initio study of the interfacial properties of a series of monolayer (ML) and bilayer (BL) MoS2-metal contacts (metal = Sc, Ti, Ag, Pt, Ni, and Au). A comparison between the calculated and observed Schottky barrier heights (SBHs) suggests that many-electron effects are strongly suppressed in channel 2D MoS2 due to a charge transfer. The extensiv…
The temperature dependence of the relaxation dynamics in the bilayer thin film heterostructure composed of multiferroic BiFeO$_{3}$ (BFO) and superconducting YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ (YBCO) grown on a (001) SrTiO$_{3}$ substrate is studied by a time-resolved pump-probe technique, and compared with that of pure YBCO thin film grown under the same growth conditions. The superconductivity of YBCO is found to be retained in the heterostructure. We observe a speeding up of the YBCO recombination dynamics in the superconducting state of the heterostructure, and attribute it to the presence of weak f…
SrIrO$_3$ with its large spin-orbit coupling and low charge conductivity has emerged as a potential candidate for efficient spin-orbit torque magnetization control in spintronic devices. We here report on the influence of an interfacial oxide layer on spin pumping experiments in Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ (NiFe)/SrIrO$_3$ bilayer heterostructures. To investigate this scenario we have carried out broadband ferromagnetic resonance (BBFMR) measurements, which indicate the presence of an interfacial antiferromagnetic oxide layer. We performed in-plane BBFMR experiments at cryogenic temperatures, which all…
In bilayer systems consisting of an ultrathin ferromagnetic layer adjacent to a metal with strong spin-orbit coupling, an applied in-plane current induces torques on the magnetization. The torques that arise from spin-orbit coupling are of particular interest. Here, we calculate the current-induced torque in a Pt-Co bilayer to help determine the underlying mechanism using first principles methods. We focus exclusively on the analogue to the Rashba torque, and do not consider the spin Hall effect. The details of the torque depend strongly on the layer thicknesses and the interface structure, pr…
Van der Waals (vdW) materials have greatly expanded our design space of heterostructures by allowing individual layers to be stacked at non-equilibrium configurations, for example via control of the twist angle. Such heterostructures not only combine characteristics of the individual building blocks, but can also exhibit emergent physical properties absent in the parent compounds through interlayer interactions. Here we report on a new family of emergent, nanometer-thick, semiconductor 2D ferroelectrics, where the individual constituents are well-studied non-ferroelectric monolayer transition …
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are promising materials for efficient generation of current-induced spin-orbit torques on an adjacent ferromagnetic layer. Numerous effects, both interfacial and bulk, have been put forward to explain the different torques previously observed. Thus far, however, there is no clear consensus on the microscopic origin underlying the spin-orbit torques observed in these TMD/ferromagnet bilayers. To shine light on the microscopic mechanisms at play, here we perform thickness dependent spin-orbit torque measurements on the semiconducting WSe$_{2}$/permalloy bi…
Spin-orbit torques offer a promising mechanism for electrically controlling magnetization dynamics in nanoscale heterostructures. While spin-orbit torques occur predominately at interfaces, the physical mechanisms underlying these torques can originate in both the bulk layers and at interfaces. Classifying spin-orbit torques based on the region that they originate in provides clues as to how to optimize the effect. While most bulk spin-orbit torque contributions are well studied, many of the interfacial contributions allowed by symmetry have yet to be fully explored theoretically and experimen…
This paper presents the boundary conditions needed for drift-diffusion models to treat interfaces with spin-orbit coupling. Using these boundary conditions for heavy metal/ferromagnet bilayers, solutions of the drift-diffusion equations agree with solutions of the spin-dependent Boltzmann equation and allow for a much simpler interpretation of the results. A key feature of these boundary conditions is their ability to capture the role that in-plane electric fields have on the generation of spin currents that flow perpendicularly to the interface. The generation of these spin currents is a dire…
We analyze the experimentally obtained spin-current-related magnetoresistance in epitaxial Pt/Co bilayers by using a drift-diffusion model that incorporates both bulk spin Hall effect and interfacial Rashba-Edelstein effect (REE). The magnetoresistance analysis yields, for the Pt/Co interface, a temperature-independent Rashba parameter in the order of 1e-11 eV m that agrees with theoretical calculations, along with an effective interfacial REE thickness of several angstroms which is in overall consistency with our previous spin-orbit torque analysis. In particular, our results suggest that bot…
We show that Co spins in Co/FeRh epitaxial bilayers grown on W(110) switch reversibly between the two orthogonal in-plane directions as the FeRh layer undergoes temperature driven antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic (AFM-FM) phase transition. Switching of Co magnetization is characterized by a hysteretic behavior owing to a temperature hysteresis of the AFM-FM transition in FeRh. The spin reorientation of Co is driven by the evolution interfacial exchange coupling to FeRh system across the AFM-FM process. Our results provide a new method of writing information purely by a local temperature change.
We show that Friedel charge oscillation near an interface opens a gap at the Fermi energy for electrons with wave vectors perpendicular to the interface. If the Friedel gaps on two sides of the interface are different, a nonequlibrium effect - shifting of these gaps under bias - leads to asymmetric transport upon reversing the bias polarity. The predicted transport asymmetry is revealed by scanning tunneling potentiometry at monolayer-bilayer interfaces in epitaxial graphene on SiC (0001). This intriguing interfacial transport behavior opens a new avenue towards novel quantum functions such as…
The inversion symmetry breaking at the interface between different materials generates a strong interfacial spin-orbit coupling (ISOC) that may influence the spin and charge transport in hybrid structures. Here we use a simple analytically solvable model to study in the ballistic approximation various spin transport phenomena induced by ISOC in a bilayer metallic system. In this model a non-equilibrium steady state carrying a spin current is created by applying a spin dependent bias across the metallic junction. Physical observables are then calculated using the scattering matrix approach. In …
In ferromagnetic thin films, broken inversion symmetry and spin-orbit coupling give rise to interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Analytic expressions for spin-wave properties show that the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction leads to non-reciprocal spin-wave propagation, i.e. different properties for spin waves propagating in opposite directions. In favorable situations, it can increase the spin-wave attenuation length. Comparing measured spin wave properties in ferromagnet$|$normal metal bilayers and other artificial layered structures with these calculations can provide …
Efficient control of magnetism with electric means is a central issue of current spintronics research, which opens an opportunity to design integrated spintronic devices. However, recent well-studied methods are mostly based on electric-current injection, and they are inevitably accompanied by considerable energy losses through Joule heating. Here we theoretically propose a way to exert spin torques into magnetic bilayer systems by application of electric voltages through taking advantage of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. The torques resemble the well-known electric-current-induced torques…
Current induced spin-orbit magnetic fields (iSOFs), arising either in single-crystalline ferromagnets with broken inversion symmetry1,2 or in non-magnetic metal/ferromagnetic metal bilayers3,4, can produce spin-orbit torques which act on a ferromagnet's magnetization, thus offering an efficient way for its manipulation. To further reduce power consumption in spin-orbit torque devices, it is highly desirable to control iSOFs by the field-effect, where power consumption is determined by charging/discharging a capacitor5,6. In particular, efficient electric-field control of iSOFs acting on ferromag…
We predict a magnetoresistance induced by the interfacial Rashba spin-orbit coupling in normal metal|ferromagnetic insulator bilayer. It depends on the angle between current and magnetization directions identically to the "spin Hall magnetoresistance" mechanism caused by a combined action of spin Hall and inverse spin Hall effects. Due to the identical phenomenology it is not obvious whether the magnetoresistance reported by Nakayama et al. is a bulk metal or interface effect. The interfacial Rashba induced magnetoresistance may be distinguished from the bulk metal spin Hall magnetoresistance …
The structural and vibrational properties of metal-organic interfaces have been examined by means of infrared (IR) absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) with an approach accounting for long-range dispersive interactions. We focus on a comparative study of the PTCDA monolayer and bilayer on Ag(111). The equilibrium geometry at the molecule-metal interface and the infrared spectrum of the chemisorbed monolayer of PTCDA on Ag(111) are well described by the computations. In the bilayer structure, the presence of a physisorbed adlayer on top of PTCDA/Ag(111) presents a challen…
Spin-orbit torque (SOT) induced by spin Hall and interfacial effects in heavy metal(HM)/ferromagnetic(FM) bilayers has recently been employed to switch the magnetization direction using in-plane current injection. In this paper, using the Keldysh Green's function approach and first principles electronic structure calculations we determine the Field-Like (FL) and Damping-Like (DL) components of the SOT for the HM/Co (HM = Pt, Pd) bilayers. Our approach yields the angular dependence of both the FL- and DL-SOT on the magnetization direction without assuming a priori their angular form. Decomposit…
Ultrafast THz radiation generation from ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic bilayer heterostructure-based spintronic emitters generally exploits the conversion from spin- to charge-current within the nonmagnetic layer and its interface with the ferromagnetic layer. Various possible sub-contributions to the underlying mechanism of inverse spin Hall effect for the THz emission from such structures, need to be exploited for not only investigating the intricacies at the fundamental level in the material properties themselves but also for improving their performance for broadband and high-power THz emission.…
We calculate the density of states (DOS) in a diffusive superconducting/ferromagnetic bilayer with a spin-active interface. We use a self-consistent numerical treatment to make a systematic study of the effects of the Spin-Dependence of Interfacial Phase Shifts (SDIPS) on the self-consistent superconducting gap and the DOS. Strikingly, we find that the SDIPS can induce a double gap structure (DGS) in the DOS of the ferromagnet, even when the superconducing layer is much thicker than the superconducting coherence lenght. We thus obtain DOS curves which have interesting similarities with those o…
We report a tunable spin mixing conductance, up to $\pm 22\%$, in a Y${}_{3}$Fe${}_{5}$O${}_{12}$/Platinum (YIG/Pt) bilayer. This control is achieved by applying a gate voltage with an ionic gate technique, which exhibits a gate-dependent ferromagnetic resonance line width. Furthermore, we observed a gate-dependent spin pumping and spin Hall angle in the Pt layer, which is also tunable up to $\pm$ 13.6\%. This work experimentally demonstrates spin current control through spin pumping and a gate voltage in a YIG/Pt bilayer, demonstrating the crucial role of the interfacial charge density for the…
The paper concerns experimental verification of the magnitude of imaginary part of spin mixing conductance in bilayers comprising heavy metals. We present results of broadband ferromagnetic resonance studies on heterostructures consisting of Finemet thin films covered by Pt and Ta wedge layers with the aim to observe spin pumping effects and to evaluate both the real and imaginary parts of the spin mixing conductance. The experimental results are analyzed in the framework of a recent microscopic theory which allows us to estimate the value of the interfacial spin-orbit interaction and confirm …
Magnetic insulators are promising materials for the development of energy-efficient spintronics. Unlike metallic counterparts, the magnetic insulators are characterized by imaginary part of the interfacial spin mixing conductance as well in a bilayer with heavy metals and it is responsible for the field-like toque in spin-orbit torque devices. Here, we study the underlying theoretical constructs and develop a general strategy to determine the complex spin mixing conductance from the experimental results of ferromagnetic resonance and spin pumping. The results show that the imaginary part of th…
The rich and electrostatically tunable phase diagram exhibited by moiré materials has made them a suitable platform for hosting single material multi-purpose devices. To engineer such devices, understanding electronic transport and localization across electrostatically defined interfaces is of fundamental importance. Little is known, however, about how the interplay between the band structure originating from the moiré lattice and electric potential gradients affects electronic confinement. Here, we electrostatically define a cavity across a twisted double bilayer graphene sample. We observe t…
One of the hallmarks of light-spin interaction in solids is the appearance of photocurrent that depends on the light helicity. Recent studies have shown that helicity dependent photocurrent (HDP) emerges due to light induced spin current and the inverse spin Hall effect of semimetal thin films. We have studied HDP in metal/semimetal bilayers. Compared to Bi single layer films, we find the HDP is enhanced in metal/Bi bilayers. For the bilayers, the sign of HDP under back illumination reverses from that of front illumination. The back illumination photocurrent is the largest for Ag/Bi bilayers a…
Graphene is a two-dimensional (2D) semimetal with high mobility in charge carriers due to the existence of Dirac points. Silicene is another promising material, with properties analog to graphene. Many silicon (Si) based electronic devices can be integrated via graphene-silicene (Gra/si) hybrid structures. These electronic applications are mostly based on the ability to tune the bandgap via electronic structure deformation that is expected to be achieved by multilayer stacking, applying a transverse external electric field (EF), and altering interfacial distance. In this work, we investigate t…
We have investigated the topological Hall effect (THE) in MnGa/Pt and MnGa/Ta bilayers induced by interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). The most evident THE signals have been found based on the MnGa films with small critical DMI energy constant Dc. The large topological portion of the Hall signal from the total Hall signal has been extracted in the whole temperature range from 5 to 300 K. These results open up the exploration of the DMI induced magnetic behavior based on the bulk perpendicular magnetic anisotropy materials for fundamental physics and magnetic storage technologie…
The depth profile of the intrinsic magnetic properties in an Fe/Sm-Co bilayer fabricated under nearly optimal spring-magnet conditions was determined by complementary studies of polarized neutron reflectometry and micromagnetic simulations. We found that at the Fe/Sm-Co interface the magnetic properties change gradually at the length scale of 8 nm. In this intermixed interfacial region, the saturation magnetization and magnetic anisotropy are lower and the exchange stiffness is higher than values estimated from the model based on a mixture of Fe and Sm-Co phases. Therefore, the intermixed inte…
The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is of great interest as it can stabilize chiral spin structures in thin films. Experiments verifying the orientation of the interfacial DMI vector remain rare, in part due to the difficulty of separating vector components of DMI. In this study, Fe/Ni bilayers and Co/Ni multilayers were deposited epitaxially onto Cu(001) and Pt(111) substrates, respectively. By tailoring the effective anisotropy, spin reorientation transitions (SRTs) are employed to probe the orientation of the DMI vector by measuring the spin structure of domain walls on …
In bilayer nanowires consisting of a ferromagnetic layer and a non-magnetic layer with strong spin-orbit coupling, currents create torques on the magnetization beyond those found in simple ferromagnetic nanowires. The resulting magnetic dynamics appear to require torques that can be separated into two terms, damping-like and field-like. The damping-like torque is typically derived from models describing the bulk spin Hall effect and the spin transfer torque, and the field-like torque is typically derived from a Rashba model describing interfacial spin-orbit coupling. We derive a model based on…
Ongoing experimental progress in the preparation of ultra-clean graphene/superconductor (SC) interfaces enabled the recent observation of specular interband Andreev reflections (AR) at bilayer graphene (BLG)/NbSe$_{2}$ van der Waals interfaces [Nature Physics 12, (2016)]. Motivated by this experiment we theoretically study the differential conductance across a BLG/SC interface at the continuous transition from high to ultra-low Fermi energies $E_{F}$ in BLG. Using the Bogoliubov-deGennes equations and the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk formalism we derive analytical expressions for the differential …
Using an atomistic spin model, we have simulated spin wave injection and propagation into antiferromagnetic IrMn from an exchange coupled CoFe layer. The spectral characteristics of the exited spin waves have a complex beating behavior arising from the non-collinear nature of the antiferromagnetic order. We find that the frequency response of the system depends strongly on the strength and frequency of oscillating field excitations. We also find that the strength of excited spin waves strongly decays away from the interfacial layer with a frequency dependent attenuation. Our findings suggest t…
Artificially twisted heterostructures of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) offer unprecedented control over their electronic and optical properties via the spatial modulation of interlayer interactions and structural reconstruction. Here we study twisted MoS2 bilayers in a wide range of twist angles near 0° using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy/Spectroscopy. We investigate the twist angle-dependence of the moiré pattern which is dominated by lattice reconstruction for small angles (<2°) leading to large triangular domains with rhombohedral stacking. Local spectroscopy measur…
We use a perturbative approach to study the effects of interfacial spin-orbit coupling in magnetic multilayers by treating the two-dimensional Rashba model in a fully three-dimensional description of electron transport near an interface. This formalism provides a compact analytic expression for current-induced spin-orbit torques in terms of unperturbed scattering coefficients, allowing computation of spin-orbit torques for various contexts, by simply substituting scattering coefficients into the formulas. It applies to calculations of spin-orbit torques for magnetic bilayers with bulk magnetis…
