We study how the predicted [$α$/Fe]-[Fe/H] relations in early-type galaxies vary as functions of their stellar masses, ages and stellar velocity dispersions, by making use of cosmological chemodynamical simulations with feedback from active galactic nuclei. Our model includes a detailed treatment for the chemical enrichment from dying stars, core-collapse supernovae (both Type II and hypernovae) and Type Ia supernovae. At redshift $z=0$, we create a catalogue of $526$ galaxies, among which we determine $80$ early-type galaxies. From the analysis of our simulations, we find [$α$/Fe]-[Fe/H] relations similar to the Galactic bulge. We also find that, in the oldest galaxies, Type Ia supernovae start to contribute at higher [Fe/H] than in the youngest ones. On the average, early-type galaxies with larger stellar masses (and, equivalently, higher stellar velocity dispersions) have higher [$α$/Fe] ratios, at fixed [Fe/H]. This is qualitatively consistent with the recent observations of Sybilska et al., but quantitatively there are mismatches, which might require stronger feedback, sub-classes of Type Ia Supernovae, or a variable initial mass function to address.
We present the discovery of rotation in quenched, low-mass early-type galaxies that are isolated. This finding challenges the claim that (all) rotating dwarf early-type galaxies in clusters were once spiral galaxies that have since been harassed and transformed into early-type galaxies. Our search of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data within the Local volume ($z<0.02$) has yielded a sample of 46 galaxies with a stellar mass $M_\star \lesssim 5\times10^9$ M$_\odot$ (median $M_\star \sim 9.29 \times 10^8$ M$_\odot$), a low H$α$ equivalent width EW$_{{\rm H}α}< 2$ Å, and no massive neighbour ($M_{…
Under the $Λ$ cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) cosmological models, massive galaxies are expected to be larger in denser environments through frequent hierarchical mergers with other galaxies. Yet, observational studies of low-redshift early-type galaxies have shown no such trend, standing as a puzzle to solve during the past decade. We analyzed 73,116 early-type galaxies at $0.1\leq z < 0.15$, adopting a robust nonparametric size measurement technique and extending the analysis to many massive galaxies. We find for the first time that local early-type galaxies heavier than $10^{11.2}M_{\odot}$ show …
The surface brightness distribution of $\sim$30-40$\%$ of the early-type dwarf galaxies with $-18 \leq M_{B} \leq -15$ in the Virgo and the Coma clusters is fitted by models that include two structural components (Sèrsic + exponential) as for bright disc galaxies. The goal of the present study is to determine whether early-type dwarf galaxies with a two-component stellar structure in the Virgo and the Coma clusters are low-luminosity copies of bright disc galaxies or are the remnants of bright galaxies strongly transformed by cluster environmental effects.I analysed the location of bright disc …
In this work, we study the evolution with redshift of the colour-magnitude relation (CMR) of early-type galaxies. This evolution is analyzed through cosmological numerical simulations from z = 2 to z = 0. The preliminary results shown here represent the starting point of a study aimed at identifying the processes that originated the observed CMR of early-type galaxies at z = 0.
As endpoints of the hierarchical mass-assembly process, the stellar populations of local early-type galaxies encode the assembly history of galaxies over cosmic time. We use Horizon-AGN, a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation, to study the merger histories of local early-type galaxies and track how the morphological mix of their progenitors evolves over time. We provide a framework for alleviating `progenitor bias' -- the bias that occurs if one uses only early-type galaxies to study the progenitor population. Early-types attain their final morphology at relatively early epochs -- by $z\sim1…
We use the data of modern digital sky surveys (PanSTARRS-1, SDSS) combined with HI-line and far ultraviolet (GALEX) surveys to reclassify 165 early-type galaxies from the Catalog of Isolated Galaxies (KIG). As a result, the number of E- and S0-type galaxies reduced to 91. Our search for companions of early-type KIG galaxies revealed 90 companions around 45 host galaxies with line-of-sight velocity differences $|dV| < 500$ km s$^{-1}$ and linear projected separations $R_{p} < 750$ kpc. We found no appreciable differences in either integrated luminosity or color of galaxies associated with the p…
A strong correlation between atmospheric pressure and molecular gas mass is found in central cluster galaxies and early-type galaxies. This trend and a similar trend with atmospheric gas density would naturally arise if the molecular clouds condensed from hot atmospheres. Limits on the ratio of molecular to atomic hydrogen in these systems exceed unity. The data are consistent with ambient pressure being a significant factor in the rapid conversion of atomic hydrogen into molecules as found in normal spiral galaxies.
We search for signatures of recent galaxy close interactions and mergers in a sample of 202 early-type galaxies in the local universe from the public SDSS Stripe82 deep images ($μ_r \sim 28.5$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$). Using two different methods to remove galaxies' smooth and symmetric light distribution, we identify and characterize eleven distinct types of merger remnants embedded in the diffuse light of these early-type galaxies. We discuss how the morphology of merger remnants can result from different kinds of minor and major mergers, and estimate the fraction of early-type galaxies in the loc…
We estimated the dynamical masses of 115 early-type galaxies (ETGs) by analyzing the dynamics of satellite and companion galaxies of these ETGs. We selected galaxies with absolute magnitudes between -22 and -25 in the $K_s$-band from the Extragalactic Distance Database (EDD). We also selected 216 spiral galaxies for comparison. We employed a simple model to simulate the observed dynamical mass from satellite galaxies at various distances. Our simulations showed that the dynamical masses derived from satellite galaxies with elliptical orbits would be smaller than those with circular orbits even…
Using the kinematic position angles (PA_kin), an accurate indicator for the spin axis of a galaxy, obtained from the ATLAS3D integral-field-unit (IFU) spectroscopic data, we discovered that 57 Virgo early-type galaxies tend to prefer the specific PA_kin values of 20 degree and 100 degree, suggesting that they are kinematically aligned with each other. These kinematic alignment angles are further associated with the directions of the two distinct axes of the Virgo cluster extending east-west and north-south, strongly suggesting that the two distinct axes are the filamentary structures within th…
Star-forming blue early-type galaxies at low redshift can give insight to the stellar mass growth of L$*$ elliptical galaxies in the local Universe. We wish to understand the reason for star formation in these otherwise passively evolving red and dead stellar systems. The fuel for star formation can be acquired through recent accretion events such as mergers or flyby. The signatures of such events should be evident from a structural analysis of the galaxy image. We carried out structural analysis on SDSS $r$-band imaging data of 55 star-forming blue elliptical galaxies, derived the structural …
We present correlations involving central intensity ratio (CIR) of 52 early type galaxies, including 24 ellipticals and 28 lenticulars, selected from low density environment in the nearby (< 30 Mpc) universe. CIR is found to be negatively and significantly correlated with the mass of the central super massive black hole, central velocity dispersion, absolute B band magnitude, stellar bulge mass and central Mg2 index of the host galaxy. The study proposes the use of CIR as a simple, fast and efficient photometric tool for exploring the co-evolution scenario existing in galaxies.
The dark matter (DM) haloes around spiral galaxies appear to conspire with their baryonic content: empirically, significant amounts of DM are inferred only below a universal characteristic acceleration scale. Moreover, the discrepancy between the baryonic and dynamical mass, which is usually interpreted as the presence of DM, follows a very tight mass discrepancy acceleration (MDA) relation. Its universality, and its tightness in spiral galaxies, poses a challenge for the DM interpretation and was used to argue in favour of MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). Here, we test whether or not this …
Early-type dwarf galaxies are not simply featureless, old objects, but were found to be much more diverse, hosting substructures and a variety of stellar population properties. To explore the stellar content of faint early-type galaxies, and to investigate in particular those with recent central star formation, we study colours and colour gradients within one effective radius in optical (g-r) and near-infrared (i-H) bands for 120 Virgo cluster early types with -19 mag < $M_{r}$ < -16 mag. Twelve galaxies turn out to have blue cores, when defined as g-r colour gradients larger than 0.10 mag/$R_…
We analyse structural decompositions of 500 late-type galaxies (Hubble $T$-type $\ge 6$) from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S$^4$G), spanning a stellar mass range of about $10^7$ to a few times $10^{10}$ M$_\odot$. Their decomposition parameters are compared with those of the early-type dwarfs in the Virgo cluster from Janz et al. They have morphological similarities, including the fact that the fraction of simple one-component galaxies in both samples increases towards lower galaxy masses. We find that in the late-type two-component galaxies both the inner and outer str…
The "kinematic" morphology-density relation for early-type galaxies posits that those galaxies with low angular momentum are preferentially found in the highest-density regions of the universe. We use a large sample of galaxy groups with halo masses 10^12.5 < M_halo < 10^14.5 M_sun/h observed with the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey to examine whether there is a correlation between local environment and rotational support that is independent of stellar mass. We find no compelling evidence for a relationship between the angular momentum content of early-type galaxies and either lo…

The Voit et al. (2020) black hole feedback valve model predicts relationships between stellar velocity dispersion and atmospheric structure among massive early-type galaxies. In this work, we test that model using the Chandra archival sample of 49 early-type galaxies from Lakhchaura et al. (2018). We consider relationships between stellar velocity dispersion and entropy profile slope, multiphase gas extent, and the ratio of cooling time to freefall time. We also define subsamples based on data quality and entropy profile properties that clarify those relationships and enable more specific test…
The JWST discovery of a number of super-early (redshift $z>10$), blue galaxies requires these systems to be essentially dust-free in spite of their large stellar masses. A possible explanation is that dust is evacuated by radiatively-driven outflows. We test this hypothesis by deriving the Eddington ratio $λ_E=L_{\rm bol}/L_{E}$, where $L_{\rm bol}$ is the bolometric luminosity produced by star-formation and possible black hole accretion, for 134 galaxies at $6.5< z <16$. We find a strong anti-correlation between $λ_E$ and dust UV optical depth, $τ_{1500} \propto λ_E^{-0.63}$; also, $λ_E$ incr…
We address the relation between star formation and AGN activity in a sample of 231 nearby ($0.0002<z<0.0358$) early type galaxies by carrying out a multi-wavelength study using archival observations in the UV, IR and radio. Our results indicate that early type galaxies in the current epoch are rarely powerful AGNs, with $P<10^{22}\,WHz^{-1}$ for a majority of the galaxies. Only massive galaxies are capable of hosting powerful radio sources while less massive galaxies are hosts to lower radio power sources. Evidence of ongoing star formation is seen in approximately 7% of the sample. The SFR of…
We analyze $Chandra$ observations of the hot atmospheres of 40 early spiral and elliptical galaxies. Using new temperature, density, cooling time, and mass profiles, we explore relationships between their hot atmospheres and cold molecular gas. Molecular gas mass correlates with atmospheric gas mass and density over four decades from central galaxies in clusters to normal giant ellipticals and early spirals. The mass and density relations follow power laws: $M_{\rm mol} \propto M_{\rm X}^{1.4\pm0.1}$ and $M_{\rm mol} \propto n_{\rm e}^{1.8\pm0.3}$, respectively, at 10 kpc. The ratio of molecul…
The globular cluster systems of galaxies are well-known to extend to large galactocentric radii. Here we quantify the size of GC systems using the half number radius of 22 GC systems around early-type galaxies from the literature. We compare GC system sizes to the sizes and masses of their host galaxies. We find that GC systems typically extend to 4$\times$ that of the host galaxy size, however this factor varies with galaxy stellar mass from about 3$\times$ for M$^{\ast}$ galaxies to 5$\times$ for the most massive galaxies in the universe. The size of a GC system scales approximately linearly…
The hierarchical galaxy formation scenario in the Cold Dark Matter cosmogony with a non-vanishing cosmological constant and geometrically flat space has been very successful in explaining the large-scale distribution of galaxies. However, there have been claims that the scenario predicts too many satellite galaxies associated with massive galaxies compared to observations, called the missing satellite galaxy problem. Isolated groups of galaxies hosted by passively evolving massive early-type galaxies are ideal laboratories for finding the missing physics in the current theory. Here we report f…
Recent attempts to detect [OIII] 88$μ$m emission from super-early ($z>10$) galaxy candidates observed by JWST have been unsuccessful. By using zoom-in simulations, we show that these galaxies are faint, and mostly fall below the local metal-poor $\rm [OIII]-SFR$ relation as a result of their low ionization parameter, $U_{\rm ion}\lesssim 10^{-3}$. Such low $U_{\rm ion}$ values are found in galaxies that are in an early assembly stage, and whose stars are still embedded in high-density natal clouds. However, the most luminous galaxy in our sample ($\rm{log}[L_{\rm{[OIII]}}/L_\odot] = 8.4$, $U_{…
The redshift distribution of galactic-scale lensing systems provides a laboratory to probe the velocity dispersion function (VDF) of early-type galaxies (ETGs) and measure the evolution of early-type galaxies at redshift z ~ 1. Through the statistical analysis of the currently largest sample of early-type galaxy gravitational lenses, we conclude that the VDF inferred solely from strong lensing systems is well consistent with the measurements of SDSS DR5 data in the local universe. In particular, our results strongly indicate a decline in the number density of lenses by a factor of two and a 20…
[Abridged] Tight correlations between supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass ($M_{\rm BH}$) and the properties of the host galaxy have useful implications for our understanding of the growth of SMBHs and evolution of galaxies. Here, we present newly observed correlations between $M_{\rm BH}$ and the host galaxy total UV$-$ [3.6] color ($\mathcal{C_{\rm UV,tot}}$, Pearson's r = $0.6-0.7$) for a sample of 67 galaxies (20 early-type galaxies and 47 late-type galaxies) with directly measured $M_{\rm BH}$ in the GALEX/S$^{4}$G survey. The colors are carefully measured in a homogeneous manner using the…
Spectroscopic studies of low-luminosity early-type galaxies are essential to understand their origin and evolution but remain challenging because of low surface brightness levels. We describe an observational campaign with the new high-throughput Binospec spectrograph at the 6.5-m MMT. It targets a representative sample of dwarf elliptical (dE), ultra-diffuse (UDG), and dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies. We outline our data analysis approach that features (i) a full spectrophotometric fitting to derive internal kinematics and star formation histories of galaxies; (ii) two-dimensional light prof…
We study the morphological transformation from late types to early types and the quenching of galaxies with the seventh Data Release (DR7) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Both early type galaxies and late type galaxies are found to have bimodal distributions on the star formation rate versus stellar mass diagram ($\lg SFR - \lg M_*$). We therefore classify them into four types: the star-forming early types (sEs), the quenched early types (qEs), the star-forming late types (sLs) and the quenched late types (qLs). We checked many parameters on various environmental scales for their poten…
