(Abridged) We present a detailed study of the stellar populations of a volume-limited sample of early-type galaxies from SDSS, across a range of environments -- defined as the mass of the host dark matter halo. The stellar populations are explored through the SDSS spectra, via projection onto a set of two spectral vectors determined from Principal Component Analysis. We find the velocity dispersion of the galaxy to be the main driver behind the different star formation histories of early-type galaxies. However, environmental effects are seen to play a role (although minor). Galaxies populating the lowest mass halos have stellar populations on average ~1Gyr younger than the rest of the sample. The fraction of galaxies with small amounts of recent star formation is also seen to be truncated when occupying halos more massive than 3E13Msun. The sample is split into satellite and central galaxies for a further analysis of environment. Satellites are younger than central galaxies of the same stellar mass. The younger satellite galaxies in 6E12Msun halos have stellar populations consistent with the central galaxies found in the lowest mass halos of our sample (i.e. 1E12Msun). This result is indicative of galaxies in lower mass halos being accreted into larger halos.
We present the Fundamental Plane (FP) of field early-type galaxies at 0.5<z<1.0. Our project is a continuation of our efforts to understand the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies in different environments. The target galaxies were selected from the comprehensive and homogeneous data set of the Gemini/HST Galaxy Cluster Project. The distant field early-type galaxies follow a steeper FP relation compared to the local FP. The change in the slope of the FP can be interpreted as a mass-dependent evolution. Similar results have been found for cluster early-type galaxies in high redshift …
We present a study of the cold gas contents of the Atlas3D early-type galaxies, in the context of their optical colours, near-UV colours, and Hβ absorption line strengths. Early-type (elliptical and lenticular) galaxies are not as gas-poor as previously thought, and at least 40% of local early-type galaxies are now known to contain molecular and/or atomic gas. This cold gas offers the opportunity to study recent galaxy evolution through the processes of cold gas acquisition, consumption (star formation), and removal. Molecular and atomic gas detection rates range from 10% to 34% in red sequenc…
The gravitational lensing of Bullet Clusters and early-type galaxies pose serious challenges on the validity of MOND. Recently, Finslerian MOND, a generalization of MOND in the framework of Finsler gravity, has been proposed to explain the mass discrepancy problem of Bullet Cluster 1E 0657\ 558. In this paper, we check the validity of the Finslerian MOND in describing the strong gravitational lensing of early-type galaxies. The investigation on ten strong lenses of the CASTLES samples shows that there is no strong evidence for the existence of dark matter.
Tidal debris around galaxies can yield important clues on their evolution. We have identified tidal debris in 11 early type galaxies (T \leq 0) from a sample of 65 early types drawn from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G). The tidal debris includes features such as shells, ripples and tidal tails. A variety of techniques, including two-dimensional decomposition of galactic structures, was used to quantify the residual tidal features. The tidal debris contributes ~3 - 10% to the total 3.6 μm luminosity of the host galaxy. Structural parameters of the galaxies were estimat…
We report on a study of the isophotal shapes of early-type galaxies, to very faint levels reaching ~ 0.1% of the sky brightness. The galaxies are from the Large Format Camera (LFC) fields obtained using the Palomar 5 m Hale telescope, with integrated exposures ranging from 1 to 4 hours in the SDSS r, i and z bands. The shapes of isophotes of early-type galaxies are important as they are correlated with the physical properties of the galaxies and are influenced by galaxy formation processes. In this paper we report on a sample of 132 E and SO galaxies in one LFC field. We have redshifts for 53 …
We analyze $Chandra$ observations of the hot atmospheres of 40 early spiral and elliptical galaxies. Using new temperature, density, cooling time, and mass profiles, we explore relationships between their hot atmospheres and cold molecular gas. Molecular gas mass correlates with atmospheric gas mass and density over four decades from central galaxies in clusters to normal giant ellipticals and early spirals. The mass and density relations follow power laws: $M_{\rm mol} \propto M_{\rm X}^{1.4\pm0.1}$ and $M_{\rm mol} \propto n_{\rm e}^{1.8\pm0.3}$, respectively, at 10 kpc. The ratio of molecul…
The globular cluster systems of galaxies are well-known to extend to large galactocentric radii. Here we quantify the size of GC systems using the half number radius of 22 GC systems around early-type galaxies from the literature. We compare GC system sizes to the sizes and masses of their host galaxies. We find that GC systems typically extend to 4$\times$ that of the host galaxy size, however this factor varies with galaxy stellar mass from about 3$\times$ for M$^{\ast}$ galaxies to 5$\times$ for the most massive galaxies in the universe. The size of a GC system scales approximately linearly…
We have investigated the radial g-r color gradients of early-type galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR6 in the redshift range 0.00<z<0.06. The majority of massive early-type galaxies show a negative color gradient (red-cored) as generally expected for early-type galaxies. On the other hand, roughly 30 per cent of the galaxies in this sample show a positive color gradient (blue-cored). These "blue-cored" galaxies often show strong H beta absorption line strengths and/or emission line ratios that are indicative of the presence of young stellar populations. Combining the optical dat…
The hierarchical galaxy formation scenario in the Cold Dark Matter cosmogony with a non-vanishing cosmological constant and geometrically flat space has been very successful in explaining the large-scale distribution of galaxies. However, there have been claims that the scenario predicts too many satellite galaxies associated with massive galaxies compared to observations, called the missing satellite galaxy problem. Isolated groups of galaxies hosted by passively evolving massive early-type galaxies are ideal laboratories for finding the missing physics in the current theory. Here we report f…
We have carried out a systematic, homogeneous comparison of optical and near-infrared dispersions. Our magnitude-limited sample of early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster comprises 11 elliptical and 11 lenticular galaxies more luminous than MB = -17. We were able to determine the central dispersions based on the near-infrared CO absorption band head for 19 of those galaxies. The velocity dispersions range from less than 70 km/s to over 400 km/s. We compare our near-infrared velocity dispersions to the optical dispersions measured by Kuntschner (2000). Contrary to previous studies, we find a …
Recent attempts to detect [OIII] 88$μ$m emission from super-early ($z>10$) galaxy candidates observed by JWST have been unsuccessful. By using zoom-in simulations, we show that these galaxies are faint, and mostly fall below the local metal-poor $\rm [OIII]-SFR$ relation as a result of their low ionization parameter, $U_{\rm ion}\lesssim 10^{-3}$. Such low $U_{\rm ion}$ values are found in galaxies that are in an early assembly stage, and whose stars are still embedded in high-density natal clouds. However, the most luminous galaxy in our sample ($\rm{log}[L_{\rm{[OIII]}}/L_\odot] = 8.4$, $U_{…
The redshift distribution of galactic-scale lensing systems provides a laboratory to probe the velocity dispersion function (VDF) of early-type galaxies (ETGs) and measure the evolution of early-type galaxies at redshift z ~ 1. Through the statistical analysis of the currently largest sample of early-type galaxy gravitational lenses, we conclude that the VDF inferred solely from strong lensing systems is well consistent with the measurements of SDSS DR5 data in the local universe. In particular, our results strongly indicate a decline in the number density of lenses by a factor of two and a 20…
By using the SDSS multicolor photometry and lens modeling, we study stellar mass properties and the luminous and dark matter composition of the 57 early-type lens galaxies analyzed by the SLACS Survey. We fit the lens SEDs composed of ugriz magnitudes with a three-parameter grid of different composite stellar population models, computed by adopting solar metallicity and various IMFs, and we employ the best-fit values of the total projected mass enclosed within the Einstein ring of each system. We measure size-stellar mass and surface stellar mass density-stellar mass relations consistent with …
[Abridged] Tight correlations between supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass ($M_{\rm BH}$) and the properties of the host galaxy have useful implications for our understanding of the growth of SMBHs and evolution of galaxies. Here, we present newly observed correlations between $M_{\rm BH}$ and the host galaxy total UV$-$ [3.6] color ($\mathcal{C_{\rm UV,tot}}$, Pearson's r = $0.6-0.7$) for a sample of 67 galaxies (20 early-type galaxies and 47 late-type galaxies) with directly measured $M_{\rm BH}$ in the GALEX/S$^{4}$G survey. The colors are carefully measured in a homogeneous manner using the…
We present the results of 12CO(J = 1-0) mapping observations toward four interacting galaxies in early and mid stages of the interaction to understand the behavior of molecular gas in galaxy-galaxy interaction. The observations were carried out using the 45-m telescope at Nobeyama Radio Observatory (NRO). We compared our CO total flux to those previously obtained with single-dish observations and found that there are no discrepancy between them. Applying a typical CO-H2 conversion factor, all constituent galaxies have molecular gas mass more than 10^9 M_sun. Comparisons to HI, Ks and tracers o…
We study the morphological transformation from late types to early types and the quenching of galaxies with the seventh Data Release (DR7) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Both early type galaxies and late type galaxies are found to have bimodal distributions on the star formation rate versus stellar mass diagram ($\lg SFR - \lg M_*$). We therefore classify them into four types: the star-forming early types (sEs), the quenched early types (qEs), the star-forming late types (sLs) and the quenched late types (qLs). We checked many parameters on various environmental scales for their poten…
Many of the early-type galaxies observed so far at z>1 turned out to have smaller radii with respect to that of a typical present-day early-type galaxy with comparable mass. This has generated the conviction that in the past early-type galaxies were more compact, hence denser, and that as a consequence, they should have increased their radius across the time to reconcile with the present-day ones. However, observations have not yet established whether the population of early-types in the early Universe was fully represented by compact galaxies nor if they were so much more numerous than in the…
The most recent results and some of the open key questions on the evolution of early-type galaxies are reviewed in the general cosmological context of massive galaxy formation.
I briefly review what has been recently learned from determinations of mean stellar ages and abundances from integrated light studies of early-type galaxies, and discuss some new questions posed by recent data. A short discussion of spectroscopic ages is presented, but the main focus of this review is on the abundances of Fe, Mg, Ca, N, and C, obtained from comparisons of measurements taken in integrated spectra of galaxies with predictions from stellar population synthesis models.
The observation that AGN host galaxies preferentially inhabit the "green valley" between the blue cloud and the red sequence has significant consequences for our understanding of the co-evolution of galaxies and black holes via accretion events. I discuss the interpretation of green valley AGN host galaxy colours with particular focus on early-type galaxies.
I review recent and less recent work on globular cluster systems in early-type galaxies. Explaining their properties and possible assembly scenarios, touches on a variety of astrophysical topics from cluster formation itself to galaxy formation and evolution and even details of observational techniques. The spectacular cluster systems of central galaxies in galaxy clusters may owe their richness to a plethora of less spectacular galaxies and their star formation processes. It seems that dwarf galaxies occupy a particularly important role.
We present a simple, empirically motivated model that simultaneously predicts the evolution of the mean size and the comoving mass density of massive early-type galaxies from z=2 to the present. First we demonstrate that some size evolution of the population can be expected simply due to the continuous emergence of early-type galaxies. SDSS data reveal that in the present-day universe more compact early-type galaxies with a given dynamical mass have older stellar populations. In contrast, at a given stellar velocity dispersion, SDSS data show that there is no relation between size and age, whi…
We have measured the radio continuum emission of 396 early-type galaxies brighter than K = 9, using 1.4 GHz imagery from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey, Green Bank 300-ft Telescope and 64-m Parkes Radio Telescope. For M_K < -24 early-type galaxies, the distribution of radio powers at fixed absolute magnitude spans 4 orders of magnitude and the median radio power is proportional to K-band luminosity to the power 2.78\pm0.16. The measured flux densities of M_K < -25.5 early-type galaxies are greater than zero in all cases. It is thus highly likely that the most massive galaxies always host an active ga…
Present-day massive galaxies are composed mostly of early-type objects. It is unknown whether this was also the case at higher redshifts. In a hierarchical assembling scenario the morphological content of the massive population is expected to change with time from disk-like objects in the early Universe to spheroid-like galaxies at present. In this paper we have probed this theoretical expectation by compiling a large sample of massive (M_{stellar}>10^{11} h_{70}^{-2} M_{Sun}$) galaxies in the redshift interval 0 < z < 3. Our sample of 1082 objects comprises 207 local galaxies selected from SD…
I have combined the Emsellem et al. ATLAS3D rotation measures of a large sample of early-type galaxies with HST-based classifications of their central structure to characterize the rotation velocities of galaxies with cores. "Core galaxies" rotate slowly, while "power-law galaxies" (galaxies that lack cores) rotate rapidly, confirming the analysis of Faber et al. Significantly, the amplitude of rotation sharply discriminates between the two types in the -19 > Mv > -22 domain over which the two types coexist. The slow rotation in the small set of core galaxies with Mv > -20, in particular, brin…
We use high-resolution K-band VLT/HAWK-I imaging over 0.25 square degrees to study the structural evolution of massive early-type galaxies since z~1. Mass-selected samples, complete down to log(M/M_sun)~10.7 such that `typical' L* galaxies are included at all redshifts, are drawn from pre-existing photometric redshift surveys. We then separated the samples into different redshift slices and classify them as late- or early-type galaxies on the basis of their specific star-formation rate. Axis-ratio measurements for the ~400 early-type galaxies in the redshift range 0.6<z<1.8 are accurate to 0.1…
We present the second of two papers concerning the origin and evolution of local early-type galaxies exhibiting dust features. We use optical and radio data to examine the nature of active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity in these objects, and compare these with a carefully constructed control sample. We find that dust lane early-type galaxies are much more likely to host emission-line AGN than the control sample galaxies. Moreover, there is a strong correlation between radio and emission-line AGN activity in dust lane early-types, but not the control sample. Dust lane early-type galaxies show …
The results of photometric decomposition of surface brightness distributions in 85 early-type unbarred galaxies are presented. The SDSS r-images are analysed. Double-tiered exponential disks are found in all galaxies which are studied; the statistics of the disk parameters is derived.
The influence of environment on the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies is, as yet, an unresolved issue. Constraints can be placed on models of early-type galaxy formation and evolution by examining their stellar populations as a function of environment. We present a catalogue of galaxies well suited to such an investigation. The magnitude-limited (b_J<19.45) sample was drawn from four clusters (Coma, A1139, A3558, and A930 at <z>=0.04) and their surrounds. The catalogue contains luminosities, redshifts, velocity dispersions and Lick line strengths for 416 galaxies, of which 245 are…
We measure the evolution in the intrinsic shape distribution of early-type galaxies from z~1 to z~0 by analyzing their projected axis-ratio distributions. We extract a low-redshift sample (0.04 < z < 0.08) of early-type galaxies with very low star-formation rates from the SDSS, based on a color-color selection scheme and verified through the absence of emission lines in the spectra. The inferred intrinsic shape distribution of these early-type galaxies is strongly mass dependent: the typical short-to-long intrinsic axis-ratio of high-mass early-type galaxies (>1e11 M_sun) is 2:3, where as at m…
Many of the fundamental properties of early-type galaxies (ellipticals and lenticulars) can only be accessed by venturing beyond their oft-studied centers into their large-radius halo regions. Advances in observations of kinematical tracers allow early-type halos to be increasingly well probed. This review focuses on recent findings on angular momentum and dark matter content, and discusses some possible implications for galaxy structure and formation.
We present a study of the ionized gas in a sample of 65 nearby early-type galaxies, for which we have acquired optical intermediate-resolution spectra. Emission lines are detected in ~89 % of the sample. The incidence of emission appears independent from the E or S0 morphological classes. According to classical diagnostic diagrams, the majority of the galaxies are LINERs. However, the galaxies tend to move toward the "Composites" region (at lower [NII]/Halpha values) as the emission lines are measured at larger galacto-centric distances. This suggests that different ionization mechanisms may b…
Early-type galaxies are characterized by many scaling relations. One of them, the so-called fundamental plane is a relatively tight correlation between three variables, and has resisted a clear physical understanding despite many years of intensive research. Here, we show that the correlation between the three variables of the fundamental plane can be the artifact of the effect of another parameter influencing all, so that the fundamental plane may be understood as a confounding correlation. Indeed, the complexity of the physics of galaxies and of their evolution suggests that the main confoun…
The sizes of galaxies are known to be closely related with their masses, luminosities, redshifts and morphologies. However, when we fix these quantities and morphology, we still find large dispersions in the galaxy size distribution. We investigate the origin of these dispersions for red early-type galaxies, using two SDSS-based catalogs. We find that the sizes of faint galaxies (log(M_dyn/M_sun) < 10.3 or M_r > -19.5, where M_r is the r-band absolute magnitude, k-corrected to z = 0.1) are affected more significantly by luminosity, while the sizes of bright galaxies (log(M_dyn/M_sun) > 11.4 or…
We examine the fraction of early-type (and spiral) galaxies found in groups and clusters of galaxies as a function of dark matter halo mass. We use morphological classifications from the Galaxy Zoo project matched to halo masses from both the C4 cluster catalogue and the Yang et al (2007) group catalogue. We find that the fraction of early-type (or spiral) galaxies remains constant (changing by less than 10%) over three orders of magnitude in halo mass (13<log MH/Msol/h<15.8). This result is insensitive to our choice of halo mass measure, from velocity dispersions or summed optical luminosity.…
We study dark matter content in early-type galaxies and investigate whether X-ray luminosities of early-type galaxies are determined by the surrounding gravitational potential. We derived gravitational mass profiles of 22 early-type galaxies observed with XMM-Newton and Chandra. Sixteen galaxies show constant or decreasing radial temperature profiles, and their X-ray luminosities are consistent with kinematical energy input from stellar mass loss. The temperature profiles of the other 6 galaxies increase with radius, and their X-ray luminosities are significantly higher. The integrated mass-to…
In recent years argument has been made that a high fraction of early-type galaxies in the local universe experience low levels (< 1 M_sun/yr) of star formation (SF) that causes strong excess in UV flux, yet leaves the optical colors red. Many of these studies were based on GALEX imaging of SDSS galaxies (z~0.1), and were thus limited by its 5" FWHM. Poor UV resolution left other possibilities for UV excess open, such as the old populations or an AGN. Here we study high-resolution far-ultraviolet HST/ACS images of optically quiescent early-type galaxies with strong UV excess. The new images sho…
Star forming galaxies represent a valuable tracer of cosmic history. Recent observational progress with Hubble Space Telescope has led to the discovery and study of the earliest-known galaxies corresponding to a period when the Universe was only ~800 million years old. Intense ultraviolet radiation from these early galaxies probably induced a major event in cosmic history: the reionization of intergalactic hydrogen. New techniques are being developed to understand the properties of these most distant galaxies and determine their influence on the evolution of the universe.
We have made a careful selection of a large complete volume-limited sample (1209) of projected close pairs (7<r_p<50 kpc) of luminous early-type galaxies (M_r<-21.5) in the local universe (z<0.12) from the SDSS data. 249 (21%) of them show interaction features, which suggests that about 0.8% of the galaxies are merging. We derived a comoving volume merger rate of ~(1.0+/-0.4)\times 10^{-5} Mpc^{-3} Gyr^{-1} for luminous early-type galaxies. This is a direct observational determination of the merger rate of luminous galaxies in the local universe. We also obtained the chirp mass distribution of…
Since Edwin Hubble introduced his famous tuning fork diagram more than 70 years ago, spiral galaxies and early-type galaxies (ETGs) have been regarded as two distinct families. The spirals are characterized by the presence of disks of stars and gas in rapid rotation, while the early-types are gas poor and described as spheroidal systems, with less rotation and often non-axisymmetric shapes. The separation is physically relevant as it implies a distinct path of formation for the two classes of objects. I will give an overview of recent findings, from independent teams, that motivated a radical …
Early-type dwarf galaxies, once believed to be simple systems, have recently been shown to exhibit an intriguing diversity in structure and stellar content. To analyze this further, we started the SMAKCED project, and obtained deep H-band images for 101 early-type dwarf galaxies in the Virgo cluster in a brightness range of -19 \leq M_r \leq -16 mag, typically reaching a signal-to-noise of 1 per pixel of \sim0.25" at surface brightnesses \sim22.5 mag/arcsec^2 in the H-band. Here we present the first results of decomposing their two-dimensional light distributions. This is the first study dedic…
We present Gran-Telescopio-Canarias/OSIRIS optical spectra of 4 of the most compact and massive early-type galaxies in the Groth Strip Survey at redshift z~1, with effective radii Reff=0.5-2.4 kpc and photometric stellar masses Mstar=1.2-4x10^11 Msun. We find these galaxies have velocity dispersions sigma=156-236 km/s. The spectra are well fitted by single stellar population models with approximately 1 Gyr of age and solar metallicity. We find that: i) the dynamical masses of these galaxies are systematically smaller by a factor of ~6 than the published stellar masses using BRIJK photometry; i…
We investigate the dwarf (M_B> -16) galaxies in the Virgo cluster in the radio, optical, and ultraviolet regimes. Of the 365 galaxies in this sample, 80 have been detected in HI by the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey. These detections include 12 early-type dwarfs which have HI and stellar masses similar to the cluster dwarf irregulars and BCDs. In this sample of 12, half have star-formation properties similar to late type dwarfs, while the other half are quiescent like typical early-type dwarfs. We also discuss three possible mechanisms for their evolution: that they are infalling field galaxi…
We compute the properties of a sample of 221 local early-type galaxies with a spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling software, CIGALEMC. Concentrating on the star forming activity and dust contents, we derive parameters such as the specific star formation rate, the dust luminosity, dust mass and temperature. 52 % of our sample is composed of elliptical (E) galaxies and 48 % of lenticular (S0) galaxies. We find a larger proportion of S0 galaxies among galaxies with a large specific star formation rate (sSFR) and large specific dust emission. The stronger activity of S0 galaxies is confirme…
Projected axis ratio measurements of 880 early-type galaxies at redshifts 1<z<2.5 selected from CANDELS are used to reconstruct and model their intrinsic shapes. The sample is selected on the basis of multiple rest-frame colors to reflect low star-formation activity. We demonstrate that these galaxies as an ensemble are dust-poor and transparent and therefore likely have smooth light profiles, similar to visually classified early-type galaxies. Similar to their present-day counterparts, the z>1 early-type galaxies show a variety of intrinsic shapes; even at a fixed mass, the projected axis rat…
