We calculate the constitutive equations of the stress-energy tensor and the currents of the free massless Dirac field at thermodynamic equilibrium with acceleration and rotation and a conserved axial charge by using the density operator approach. We carry out an expansion in thermal vorticity to the second order with finite axial chemical potential $μ_A$. The obtained coefficients of the expansion are expressed as correlators of angular momenta and boost operators with the currents. We confirm previous observations that the axial chemical potential induces non-vanishing components of the stress-energy tensor at first order in thermal vorticity due to breaking of parity invariance of the density operator with $μ_A \ne 0$. The appearance of these components might play an important role in chiral hydrodynamics.
We consider several classes of symmetries of the Dirac Hamiltonian in 3+1 dimensions, with axially-deformed scalar and vector potentials. The symmetries include the known pseudospin and spin limits and additional symmetries which occur when the potentials depend on different variables. Supersymmetries are observed within each class and the corresponding charges are identified.
We evaluate for arbitrary even dimensions the classical continuum limit of the lattice axial anomaly defined by the overlap-Dirac operator. Our calculational scheme is simple and systematic. In particular, a powerful topological argument is utilized to determine the value of a lattice integral involved in the calculation. When the Dirac operator is free of species doubling, the classical continuum limit of the axial anomaly in various dimensions is combined into a form of the Chern character, as expected.
We have proposed previously a method for constructing self-conjugate Hamiltonians H_eta in the eta-representation with a flat scalar product to describe the dynamics of Dirac particles in arbitrary gravitational fields. In this paper, we prove that, for block-diagonal metrics, the Hamiltonians H_eta can be obtained, in particular, using "reduced" parts of Dirac Hamiltonians, i.e. expressions for Dirac Hamiltonians derived using tetrad vectors in the Schwinger gauge without or with a few summands with bispinor connectivities. Based on these results, we propose a modified method for constructing…
A recent proposal suggests that even if a Ginsparg-Wilson lattice Dirac operator does not possess any topological zero modes in topologically-nontrivial gauge backgrounds, it can reproduce correct axial anomaly for sufficiently smooth gauge configurations, provided that it is exponentially-local, doublers-free, and has correct continuum behavior. In this paper, we calculate the axial anomaly of this lattice Dirac operator in weak coupling perturbation theory, and show that it recovers the topological charge density in the continuum limit.
In this article, we carry out the Hamiltonization in the axial gauge, of the t'Hooft-Polyakov monopole field outside the localized region, which represents the monopole's core. One feature of the treatment here, is using the Higgs vacuum condition as both strong and weak equation instead of using it in the degree of freedom reduction.
We reconsider constraints on the eigenvalue density of the Dirac operator in the chiral symmetric phase of 2 flavor QCD at finite temperature. To avoid possible ultra-violet(UV) divergences, we work on a lattice, employing the overlap Dirac operator, which ensures the exact "chiral" symmetry at finite lattice spacings. Studying multi-point correlation functions in various channels and taking their thermodynamical limit (and then taking the chiral limit), we obtain stronger constraints than those found in the previous studies: both the eigenvalue density at the origin and its first and second d…
We show that as a result of the axial anomaly, massless fermions at zero temperature define a relativistic quantum superfluid. The anomaly pole implies the existence of a gapless Chiral Density Wave (CDW), i.e. an axion-like acoustic mode of an irrotational and dissipationless Hamiltonian perfect fluid, that is a correlated fermion/anti-fermion pair excitation of the Fermi-Dirac sea. In $D\!=\!2$ dimensions the chiral superfluid effective action coincides with that of the Schwinger model as $e\rightarrow 0$, and the CDW acoustic mode is precisely the Schwinger boson. Since this identity holds …
We consider a Dirac fermion in a metric-axial-tensor (MAT) background. By regulating it with Pauli-Villars fields we analyze and compute its full anomaly structure. Appropriate limits of the MAT background allows to recover the anomalies of Dirac and Weyl fermions in the usual curved spacetime, obtaining in particular the trace anomaly of a chiral fermion, which has been the object of recent analyses.
Two real vector fields are revealed as spin connections of the spinor field, which is introduced as a representation of the local Lorentz group by Dirac spinors. One of these fields is identified as the Maxwell field. Another one is the axial field, which is sufficient to describe parity nonconservation effects in atoms and it is sensitive to the second internal degree of freedom of the Dirac spinor field. The polarization associated with this degree of freedom is a distinctive characteristic of the Dirac spinor field in spatially closed localized states. The short-distance behavior of the axi…
An explicit, detailed evaluation of the classical continuum limit of the axial anomaly/index density of the overlap Dirac operator is carried out in the infinite volume setting, and in a certain finite volume setting where the continuum limit involves an infinite volume limit. Our approach is based on a novel power series expansion of the overlap Dirac operator. The correct continuum expression is reproduced when the parameter $m_0$ is in the physical region $0<m_0<2$. This is established for a broad range of continuum gauge fields. An analogous result for the fermionic topological charge, giv…
Quantum-mechanical motion of a half-spin particle was examined in the axially symmetric field of static naked singularities formed by mass distribution with quadrupole moment (q-metric). The analysis was performed by means of the method of effective potentials of the Dirac equation generalized for the case when radial and angular variables are not separated. As $-1<q<q_{lim}, |q_{lim}|<<1 $ the naked singularities do not except the existence of stationary bound states of Dirac particles for a prolate mass distribution in the q-metric along the axial axis. For the oblate mass distribution, the …
We compute the axial anomaly for the Taub-NUT metric on $R^4$. We show that the axial anomaly for the generalized Taub-NUT metrics introduced by Iwai and Katayama is finite, although the Dirac operator is not Fredholm. We show that the essential spectrum of the Dirac operator is the whole real line.
We investigate the Dirac eigenvalue spectrum ($ρ(λ,m_l)$) to study the microscopic origin of axial anomaly in high temperature phase of QCD. We propose novel relations between the derivatives ($\partial^n ρ(λ,m_l)/\partial m_l^n$) of the Dirac eigenvalue spectrum with respect to the quark mass ($m_l$) and the $(n+1)$-point correlations among the eigenvalues ($λ$) of the massless Dirac operator. Based on these relations, we present lattice QCD results for $\partial^n ρ(λ,m_l)/\partial m_l^n$ ($n=1, 2, 3$) with $m_l$ corresponding to pion masses $m_π=160-55$ MeV, and at a temperature of about 1.…
We introduce novel relations between the derivatives [$\partial^{n}ρ(λ, m_{l})/\partial m_{l}^n$] of the Dirac eigenvalue spectrum [$ρ(λ, m_{l})$] with respect to the light sea quark mass ($m_{l}$) and the $(n+1)$-point correlations among the eigenvalues ($λ$) of the massless Dirac operator. Using these relations we present lattice QCD results for $\partial^{n}ρ(λ, m_{l})/\partial m_{l}^n$ ($n=1, 2, 3$) for $m_{l}$ corresponding to pion masses $m_π=160-55$ MeV, and at a temperature of about 1.6 times the chiral phase transition temperature. Calculations were carried out using (2+1) flavors of …
We investigate on the plane the axial anomaly for euclidean Dirac fermions in the presence of a background Aharonov--Bohm gauge potential. The non perturbative analysis depends on the self--adjoint extensions of the Dirac operator and the result is shown to be influenced by the actual way of understanding the local axial current. The role of the quantum mechanical parameters involved in the expression for the axial anomaly is discussed. A derivation of the effective action by means of the stereographic projection is also considered.
The Berry phase is analyzed for Weyl and Dirac fermions in a phase space representation of the worldline formalism. Kinetic theories are constructed for both at a classical level. Whereas the Weyl fermion case reduces in dimension, resembling a theory in quantum mechanics, the Dirac fermion case takes on a manifestly Lorentz covariant form. To achieve a classical kinetic theory for the non-Abelian Dirac fermion Berry phase a spinor construction of Barut and Zanghi is utilized. The axial anomaly is also studied at a quantum level. It is found that under an adiabatic approximation, which is nece…
The spin connections of the Dirac field have three ingredients that are connected with the Ricci rotations, the Maxwell field, and an axial field which is coupled to the axial current. I demonstrate that the axial field provides an effective mechanism of auto-localization of the Dirac field into compact objects. A non-linear system of Dirac and sine-Gordon equations that has a potential to yield a mass spectrum is derived. The condition that the compact objects are stable (the energy-momentum is self-adjoint) leads to the Einstein's field equations. The Dirac field with its spin connection see…
We derive some exact results concerning the anomalous U(1)$_A$ symmetry in the chirally symmetric phase of QCD at high temperature. We discuss the importance of topology and finite-volume effects on the U(1)$_A$ symmetry violation characterized by the difference of chiral susceptibilities. In particular, we present a reliable method to measure the anomaly strength in lattice simulations with fixed topology. We also derive new spectral sum rules and a novel Banks-Casher-type relation. Through our spectral analysis we arrive at a simple alternative proof of the Aoki-Fukaya-Taniguchi "theorem" on…
Parity preserving relativistic fluids in four spacetime dimensions admit seven independent thermodynamic susceptibilities at the second order in the hydrodynamic derivative expansion. We compute all parity-even second order thermodynamic susceptibilities for a free massive Dirac field at zero temperature and a nonzero chemical potential, based on the Kubo formulas reported in P. Kovtun and A. Shukla, Kubo formulas for thermodynamic transport coefficients, J. High Energy Phys. 10 (2018) 007. We also compute the second order constitutive relations for the energy-momentum tensor and the conserved…
Helicity of free massless Dirac fermions is a conserved, Lorentz-invariant quantity at the level of the classical equations of motion. For a generic ensemble consisting of particles and antiparticles, the helical and chiral charges are different conserved quantities. The flow of helicity can be modelled by the helicity current, which is again conserved in the absence of interactions. Similar to the axial vortical effect which generates an axial (chiral) current, the helicity current is induced by vorticity in a finite temperature medium with vector (electrical) charge imbalance via the helical…
Fermion-number fractionalization without breaking of time-reversal symmetry was recently demonstrated for a field theory in $(2+1)$-dimensional space and time that describes the couplings between massive Dirac fermions, a complex-valued Higgs field carrying an axial gauge charge of 2, and a U(1) axial gauge field. Charge fractionalization occurs whenever the Higgs field either supports vortices by itself, or when these vortices are accompanied by half-vortices in the axial gauge field. The fractional charge is computed by three different techniques. A formula for the fractional charge is given…
We present a study of the thermodynamics of the massless free Dirac field at equilibrium with axial charge, angular momentum and and external electromagnetic field to assess the interplay between chirality, vorticity and electromagnetic field in relativistic fluids. After discussing the general features of global thermodynamic equilibrium in quantum relativistic statistical mechanics, we calculate the thermal expectation values. Axial imbalance and electromagnetic field are included non-perturbatively by using the exact solutions of the Dirac equation, while a perturbative expansion is carried…
A Lagrangian theory giving rise to a version of the Dirac-Kahler equations on curved backgrounds is considered. The principal pieces are the general fields which have values in the algebra of the Dirac matrices and satisfy a Dirac-type equation. Their components are scalar, pseudo-scalar, vector, axial-vector fields and fields strength which satisfy an irreducible systems of first-order Dirac-Kahler equations having remarkable gauge and duality properties similar to those of the flat case. The vector and axial-vector fields are the physical potentials giving rise to the field strength while th…
We study the thermodynamic properties of massless Dirac fermions in graphene under a uniform magnetic field and Rashba spin-orbit coupling with a $q-$deformed Heisenberg algebra calculus. The thermodynamic functions such as the Helmholtz free energy, total energy, entropy and heat capacity are obtained by using an approach based on the zeta function and Euler-Maclaurain formula. These functions will be numerically examined for different values of $η={1\over i}\ln(q)$. In particular, the heat capacity in the presence of deformation, all curves coincide and reach the fixed value $C=6K_B$ three t…
The possibility to distinguish Dirac from Majorana fermion by gravitational interaction and torsion coupling is discussed. The scattering of both Dirac and Majorana particles are the same in the spherically symmetric gravitational field up to the first order perturbation of the fermion-gravity interaction. The scattering behaviors of Dirac and Majorana fermion are also the same by axial vector torsion but different by vector torsion. We get the conclusion that the scattering by vector torsion field can distinguish the Dirac from Majorana neutrino.
There is evidence for existence of massless Dirac quasi-particles in graphene, which satisfy Dirac equation in (1+2) dimensions near the so called Dirac points which lie at the corners at the graphene's brilluoin zone. It is shown that parity operator in (1+2) dimensions play an interesting role and can be used for defining conserved chiral currents [there is no gamma^5 in (1+2) dimensions]. It is shown that the "anomalous" current induced by an external gauge field can be related to the anomalous divergence of an axial vector current which arises due to quantum radiative corrections provided …
We examine a new class of CPT-even and dimension-five nonminimal interactions between fermions and photons, deprived of higher-order derivatives, yielding electric dipole moment and magnetic dipole moment in the context of the Dirac equation. These couplings are Lorentz-violating nonminimal structures, composed of a rank-2 tensor, the electromagnetic tensor, and gamma matrices, being addressed in its axial and non-axial hermitian versions. We use the electron's anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moment measurements to reach upper bounds of $1$ part in $10^{11}$ and $10^{16}$ GeV$^{-1}$.
The dualities that map hard-to-solve, interacting theories to free, non-interacting ones often trigger a deeper understanding of the systems to which they apply. However, simplifying assumptions such as Lorentz invariance, low dimensionality, or the absence of axial gauge fields, limit their application to a broad class of systems, including topological semimetals. Here we derive several axial field theory dualities in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions by developing an axial slave-rotor approach capable of accounting for the axial anomaly. Our 2+1-dimensional duality suggests the existence of a dual, cri…
The $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills matrix model admits self-dual and anti-self-dual instantons. When coupled to $N_f$ flavors of massless quarks, the Euclidean Dirac equation in an instanton background has $n_+$ positive and $n_-$ negative chirality zero modes. We show that the index $(n_+ - n_-)$ is equal to a suitably defined instanton charge. Further, we show that the path integral measure is not invariant under a chiral rotation, and relate the non-invariance of the measure to the index of the Dirac operator. Axial symmetry is broken anomalously, with the residual symmetry being a finite group. For $N…
The SO(4,1) gauge-invariant theory of the Dirac fermions in the external field of the Kaluza-Klein monopole is investigated. It is shown that the discrete quantum modes are governed by reducible representations of the o(4) dynamical algebra generated by the components of the angular momentum operator and those of the Runge-Lenz operator of the Dirac theory in Taub-NUT background. The consequence is that there exist central and axial discrete modes whose spinors have no separated variables.
The spectral properties of the Dirac Hamiltonian in the the Aharonov-Bohm potential are discussed. By using the Krein-Friedel formula, the density of states (DOS) for different self-adjoint extensions is calculated. As in the nonrelativistic case, whenever a bound state is present in the spectrum it is always accompanied by a (anti)resonance at the energy. The Aharonov-Casher theorem must be corrected for singular field configurations. There are no zero (threshold) modes in the Aharonov-Bohm potential. For our choice of the 2d Dirac Hamiltonian, the phase-shift flip is shown to occur at only p…
We are calculated the expectation value of the axial-vector current induced by the vacuum polarization effect of the Dirac field in constant external electromagnetic field. In calculations we use Schwinger's proper time method. The effective Lagrangian has very simple Lorenz invariant form. Along with the anomaly term, it also contains two Lorenz invariant terms. The result is compared with our previous calculation of the photon - Z boson mixing in the magnetic field.
The influence of Lorentz- and CPT-violating terms (in "vector" and "axial vector" couplings) on the Dirac equation is explicitly analyzed: plane wave solutions, dispersion relations and eigenenergies are explicitly obtained. The non-relativistic limit is worked out and the Lorentz-violating Hamiltonian identified in both cases, in full agreement with the results already established in the literature. Finally, the physical implications of this Hamiltonian on the spectrum of hydrogen are evaluated both in the absence and presence of a magnetic external field. It is observed that the fixed backgr…
The Dirac oscillator in a homogenous magnetic field exhibits a chirality phase transition at a particular (critical) value of the magnetic field. Recently, this system has also been shown to be exactly solvable in the context of noncommutative quantum mechanics featuring the interesting phenomenon of re-entrant phase transitions. In this work we provide a detailed study of the thermodynamics of such quantum phase transitions (both in the standard and in the noncommutative case) within the Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics pointing out that the magnetization has discontinuities at critical values of…
It is shown that a spin-1/2 fermion coupled to the axially symmetric electromagnetic vector potential has the same matrix structure as that one for the planar Dirac oscillator. In particular, the planar Dirac oscillator can be interpreted as a charged particle minimally coupled to a transverse homogeneous magnetic field.
As is well known to physicists, the axial anomaly of the massless free fermion in Euclidean signature is given by the index of the corresponding Dirac operator. We use the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism and the methods of equivariant quantization of Costello and Gwilliam to produce a new, mathematical derivation of this result. Using these methods, we formalize two conventional interpretations of the axial anomaly, the first as a violation of current conservation at the quantum level and the second as the obstruction to the existence of a well-defined fermionic partition function. Moreover,…
The chiral and scale anomalies of a very general class of non local Dirac operators are computed using the $ζ$-function definition of the fermionic determinant. For the axial anomaly all new terms introduced by the non locality are shown to be removable by counterterms and such counterterms are also explicitly computed. It is verified that the non local Dirac operators have the standard minimal anomaly in Bardeen's form.
The axial anomaly is computed for Euclidean Dirac fermions on the plane. The dependence upon the self-adjoint extensions of the Dirac operator is investigated and its relevance concerning the second virial coefficient of the anyon gas is discussed.
A novel feature of a Ginsparg-Wilson lattice Dirac operator is discussed. Unlike the Dirac operator for massless fermions in the continuum, this lattice Dirac operator does not possess topological zero modes for any topologically-nontrivial background gauge fields, even though it is exponentially-local, doublers-free, and reproduces correct axial anomaly for topologically-trivial gauge configurations.
We study the modular Hamiltonians of an interval for the massless Dirac fermion on the half-line. The most general boundary conditions ensuring the global energy conservation lead to consider two phases, where either the vector or the axial symmetry is preserved. In these two phases we derive the corresponding modular Hamiltonian in explicit form. Its density involves a bi-local term localised in two points of the interval, one conjugate to the other. The associated modular flows are also established. Depending on the phase, they mix fields with different chirality or charge that follow differ…
We establish covariant semiclassical transport equations of massive spin-1/2 particles which are generated by the quantum kinetic equation modified by enthalpy current dependent terms. The purpose of modification is to take into account the noninertial properties due to the angular velocity of rotating frame which is equivalent to the fluid vorticity in hydrodynamical approach. We present the equations satisfied by the Wigner function components and by studying their solution in the semiclassical approximation we accomplish the transport equations. To acquire a three-dimensional kinetic theory…
We show that even if a lattice Dirac operator satisfies the conditions consisting of locality, free of species doublings, correct continuum behavior, $\gm5$-hermiticity and the Ginsparg-Wilson relation, it does not necessarily have exact zero modes in nontrivial gauge backgrounds. This implies that each lattice Dirac operator has its own topological characteristics which cannot be fixed by these conditions. The role of topological characteristics in the axial anomaly is derived explicitly.
The axial magnetic effect (AME) is one of the anomalous transport phenomena in which the energy current is induced by an axial magnetic field. Here, we numerically study the AME for the relativistic Wilson fermion in the axial magnetic field and a twisted Dirac semimetal. The AME current density inside the bulk is nonzero, and particularly in the low-energy regime for the former model, it is explained by the field-theoretical results without any fitting parameter. However, for both models, the average AME current density vanishes owing to the surface contribution. The axial gauge field is rega…
Augmentations to the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian (QED one-loop effective action in homogeneous electromagnetic fields) under a constant background axial gauge are examined. Two special configurations admit an exact eigendecomposition, and hence effective action as a spectral sum, of the augmented Dirac operator: one with a magnetic field with chiral chemical potential, and the other with an electric field with spatial axial gauge, which resembles an emergent vorticity. An enhancement to Schwinger pair production is found for the latter, which is more fully analyzed using the worldline instanto…
The 1+1 dimensional massive Dirac equation is solved exactly in light-cone coordinates for $x^+ > 0$ and $x^- > -L$, in the presence of an arbitrary $x^+$ dependent electric field. Our solution resolves the ambiguity at $p^+ = 0$. We also obtain the one loop rate for pair production for a positive electric field, compute the expectation values of the vector and axial vector currents, and recover the well known anomaly $e^2 E/π$ in the divergence of the latter. A final intriguing result is that the theory seems to exhibit a phase transition in the limit of infinite $L$.
We compute the axial anomaly of a Lifshitz fermion theory with anisotropic scaling z=3 which is minimally coupled to geometry in 3+1 space-time dimensions. We find that the result is identical to the relativistic case using path integral methods. An independent verification is provided by showing with spectral methods that the eta-invariant of the Dirac and Lifshitz fermion operators in three dimensions are equal. Thus, by the integrated form of the anomaly, the index of the Dirac operator still accounts for the possible breakdown of chiral symmetry in non-relativistic theories of gravity. We …

A transformation is devised to convert any lattice Dirac fermion operator into a Ginsparg-Wilson Dirac fermion operator. For the standard Wilson-Dirac lattice fermion operator, the transformed new operator is local, free of O(a) lattice artifacts, has correct axial anomaly in the trivial sector, and is not plagued by the notorious problems (e.g., additive mass renormalization) which occur to the standard Wilson-Dirac lattice fermion operator.
It is shown that the local axial anomaly in $2-$dimensions emerges naturally if one postulates an underlying noncommutative fuzzy structure of spacetime . In particular the Dirac-Ginsparg-Wilson relation on ${\bf S}^2_F$ is shown to contain an edge effect which corresponds precisely to the ``fuzzy'' $U(1)_A$ axial anomaly on the fuzzy sphere . We also derive a novel gauge-covariant expansion of the quark propagator in the form $\frac{1}{{\cal D}_{AF}}=\frac{a\hatΓ^L}{2}+\frac{1}{{\cal D}_{Aa}}$ where $a=\frac{2}{2l+1}$ is the lattice spacing on ${\bf S}^2_F$, $\hatΓ^L$ is the covariant noncomm…
The dislocation in Dirac semimetal carries an emergent magnetic flux parallel to the dislocation axis. We show that due to the emergent magnetic field the dislocation accommodates a single fermion massless mode of the corresponding low-energy one-particle Hamiltonian. The mode is propagating along the dislocation with its spin directed parallel to the dislocation axis. In agreement with the chiral anomaly observed in Dirac semimetals, an external electric field results in the spectral flow of the one-particle Hamiltonian, in pumping of the fermionic quasiparticles out from the vacuum, and in c…
