The spin-orbit coupling (SOC) interactions, electron correlation effects and Hund coupling cooperate and compete with each other, leading to novel properties, quantum phase and non-trivial topological electronic behavior in iridium oxides. Because of the well separated IrO6 octahedra approaching cubic crystal-field limit, the hexagonal iridates Sr3MIrO6 (M = Sr, Na and Li) serves as a canonical model system to investigate the underlying physical properties that arises from the novel Jeff state. Based on density functional theory calculations complemented by Green's function methods, we systematically explore the critical role of SOC on the electronic structure and magnetic properties of Sr3MIrO6. The crystal-field splitting combined with correlation effects are insufficient to account for the insulating nature, but the SOC interactions is the intrinsic source to trigger the insulating ground states in these hexagonal iridates. The decreasing geometry connectivity of IrO6 octahedra gives rise to the increasing of effective electronic correlations and SOC interactions, tuning the hexagonal iridates from low-spin Jeff = 1/2 states with large local magnetic moments for the Ir4+ (5d5) ions in Sr4IrO6 to nonmagnetic singlet Jeff = 0 states without magnetic moments for the Ir5+ (5d4) ions in Sr3NaIrO6 and Sr3LiIrO6. The theoretical calculated results are in good agreement with available experimental data, and explain the magnetic properties of Sr3MIrO6 well.
A burning question in the emerging field of spin-orbit driven insulating iridates, such as Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 is whether the observed insulating state should be classified as a Mott-Hubbard insulator derived from a half-filled relativistic j_eff=1/2 band or as a band insulator where the gap is assisted by spin-orbit interaction, or Coulomb correlations, or both. The difference between these two interpretations is that only for the former, strong spin-orbit coupling (lambda >~ W, where W is the band width) is essential. We have synthesized the isostructural and isoelectronic Li2RhO3 and report…
Using ab-initio methods for correlated electrons in solids, we investigate the metal-insulator transition across the Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) series of iridates and explore the robustness of the J_eff=1/2 state against band effects due to itineracy, tetragonal distortion, octahedral rotation and Coulomb interaction. We predict the effects of epitaxial strain on the optical conductivity, magnetic moments, and J_eff=1/2 ground-state wave functions in the RP series. To describe the solution of the many-body problem in an intuitive picture, we introduce a concept of energy-dependent atomic states, w…
Using detailed synchrotron diffraction, magnetization, thermodynamic and transport measurements, we investigate the relationship between the mixed valence of Ir, lattice strain and the resultant structural and magnetic ground states in the geometrically frustrated triple perovskite iridate Ba$_{3}$NaIr$_{2}$O$_{9}$. We observe a complex interplay between lattice strain and structural phase co-existence, which is in sharp contrast to what is typically observed in this family of compounds. The low temperature magnetic ground state is characterized by the absence of long range order, and points t…
Motivated by the recent experimental observation of a Mott insulating state for the layered Iridate Na2IrO3, we discuss possible ordering states of the effective Iridium moments in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling and a magnetic field. For a field pointing in the [111] direction - perpendicular to the hexagonal lattice formed by the Iridium moments - we find that a combination of Heisenberg and Kitaev exchange interactions gives rise to a rich phase diagram with both symmetry breaking magnetically ordered phases as well as a topologically ordered phase that is stable over a small ran…
We determine how the elementary excitations of iridium-oxide materials, which are dominated by a strong relativistic spin-orbit coupling, appear in Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS). Whereas the RIXS spectral weight at the L2 x-ray edge vanishes, we find it to be strong at the L3-edge. Applying this to Sr2IrO4, we observe that RIXS, besides being sensitive to local doublet to quartet transitions, meticulously maps out the strongly dispersive delocalized excitations of the low-lying spin-orbit doublets.
Sr3Ir2O7 exhibits a novel Jeff=1/2 insulating state that features a splitting between Jeff=1/2 and 3/2 bands due to spin-orbit interaction. We report a metal-insulator transition in Sr3Ir2O7 via either dilute electron doping (La3+ for Sr2+) or application of high pressure up to 35 GPa. Our study of single-crystal Sr3Ir2O7 and (Sr1-xLax)3Ir2O7 reveals that application of high hydrostatic pressure P leads to a drastic reduction in the electrical resistivity by as much as six orders of magnitude at a critical pressure, PC = 13.2 GPa, manifesting a closing of the gap; but further increasing P up t…
We have explored the critical metal-insulator phenomena for pyrochlore-type $R_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, in which electron correlation strength and magnetic configuration are systematically controlled by varying the average rare-earth ionic radius ($R$=Nd$_{1-x}$Pr$_{x}$ and Sm$_{y}$Nd$_{1-y}$), external pressure, and magnetic field. Metal-insulator transitions in bulk are caused by increasing $x$ or tuning external pressure, indicating that the effective electron correlation is responsible for the transition. The metallic state intervenes between the paramagnetic insulating and antiferromagnetically ord…
Combining density functional theory (DFT) and embedded dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) methods, we study the metal-insulator transition in $R_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ ($R$=Y, Eu, Sm, Nd, Pr, and Bi) and the topological nature of the insulating compounds. Accurate free energies evaluated using the charge self-consistent DFT+DMFT method reveal that the metal-insulator transition occurs for an A-cation radius between that of Nd and Pr, in agreement with experiments. The all-in-all-out magnetic phase, which is stable in the Nd compound but not the Pr one, gives rise to a small Ir$^{4+}$ magnetic moment of…
The orthorhombic perovskite SrIrO3 is a semimetal, an intriguing exception in iridates where the strong spin-orbit interaction coupled with electron correlations tends to impose a novel insulating state. We report results of our investigation of bulk single-crystal Sr0.94Ir0.78O2.68 or Ir-deficient, orthorhombic perovskite SrIrO3. It retains the same crystal structure as stoichiometric SrIrO3 but exhibits a sharp, simultaneous antiferromagnetic (AFM) and metal-insulator (MI) transition at 185 K. Above it, the basal-plane resistivity features an extended regime of almost linear-temperature depe…
We employ molecular beam epitaxy to stabilize Ba2IrO4 thin films and utilize in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the evolution of its electronic structure through the Neel temperature TN. Our measurements indicate that dispersions of the relativistic Jeff=1/2 and 3/2 bands exhibit an unusual dichotomy in their behavior through the Neel transition. Although the charge gap survives into the paramagnetic state, only the Jeff=1/2 state exhibits a strong temperature dependence and its gap softens with increasing temperature approaching TN, while the nearly fully occupie…
Sr2IrO4 exhibits a novel insulating state driven by spin-orbit interactions. We report two novel phenomena, namely a large magnetoresistivity in Sr2IrO4 that is extremely sensitive to the orientation of magnetic field but exhibits no apparent correlation with the magnetization, and a robust metallic state that is induced by dilute electron (La3+) or hole (K+) doping for Sr2+ ions in Sr2IrO4. Our structural, transport and magnetic data reveal that a strong spin-orbit interaction alters the balance between the competing energies so profoundly that (1) the spin degree of freedom alone is no longe…

We determine the motion of a charge (hole or electron) added to the Mott insulating, antiferromagnetic (AF) ground-state of quasi-2D iridates such as Ba 2 IrO 4 or Sr 2 IrO 4 . We show that correlation effects, calculated within the self-consistent Born approximation, render the hole and electron case very different. An added electron forms a spin-polaron, which closely resembles the well-known cuprates, but the situation of a removed electron is far more complex. Many-body 5d 4 configurations form which can be singlet and triplets of total angular momentum J and strongly affect the hole motio…
A Kitaev-Heisenberg-J2-J3 model is proposed to describe the Mott-insulating layered iridates A2IrO3 (A=Na,Li). The model is a combination of the Kitaev honeycomb model and the Heisenberg model with all three nearest neighbor couplings J1, J2 and J3. A rich phase diagram is obtained at the classical level, including the experimentally suggested zigzag ordered phase; as well as the stripy phase, which extends from the Kitaev-Heisenberg limit to the J1-J2-J3 one. Combining the experimentally observed spin order with the optimal fitting to the uniform magnetic susceptibility data gives an estimate…
Muon spin rotation and relaxation experiments in the pyrochlore iridate Eu2Ir2O7 yield a well-defined muon spin precession frequency below the metal-insulator/antiferromagnetic transition temperature TM = 120 K, indicative of long-range commensurate magnetic order and thus ruling out quantum spin liquid and spin-glass-like ground states. The dynamic muon spin relaxation rate is temperature-independent between 2 K and ~TM and yields an anomalously long Ir^{4+} spin correlation time, suggesting a singular density of low-lying spin excitations. Similar behavior is found in other pyrochlores and g…
We present results from muon spin relaxation/rotation, magnetization, neutron scattering and transport measurements on polycrystalline samples of the pyrochlore iridates Y2Ir2O7 (Y-227) and Yb2Ir2O7 (Yb-227). Well-defined spontaneous oscillations of the muon asymmetry are observed together with hysteretic behavior in magnetization below 130 K in Yb-227, indicative of commensurate long-range magnetic order. Similar oscillations are observed in Y-227 below 150 K; however the onset of hysteretic magnetization at T = 190 K indicates a transition to an intermediate state lacking long-range order as…
We present genuine bulk Ir 5d jeff states of layered perovskite iridates obtained by hard-x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) with s- and p-polarized lights. HAXPES spectra of Sr2IrO4 and Ba2IrO4 are well reproduced by the quasi-particle densities of states calculated by the local density approximation with dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). It is demonstrated that the insulating nature of the iridates is triggered by antiferromagnetic correlation (Slater type) combined with electron correlation (Mott type). The extremely-low-energy bulk-sensitive photoemission spectroscopy reveals …
Experimental and theoretical studies are performed on La3Ir3O11, an iridate hosting a +4.33 fractional valence state for Ir ions and a three-dimensional frustrated structure composed of edge-shared Ir2O10 dimers. These features are expected to enhance inter-site hoppings and reduce magnetic moments of Ir ions. However, a spin-orbit driven Mott insulating transport is observed, which is supported by our first principles calculations. Most importantly, geometrical frustration and competing interactions result in a non-Curie-Weiss paramagnetic ground state, revealing no magnetic order down to 2 K…
The $f$-$d$ magnetic exchange interaction is considered to be a key ingredient for many exotic topological phases in pyrochlore iridates. Here, we have investigated the evolution of structural, magnetic and electronic properties in doped pyrochlore iridate, (Y$_{1-x}$Pr$_x$)$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. Apart from geometrical frustration, pyrochlore iridates are well known for its active spin-orbit coupling effect. The substitution of Pr$^{3+}$ (4$f^2$) for the nonmagnetic Y$^{3+}$ (4$d^0$) acts as a magnetic doping, which provides an ideal platform to study $f$-$d$ exchange interaction without altering th…
We present a microscopic study of a doped quantum spin liquid candidate, the hyperkagome Na$_3$Ir$_3$O$_8$ compound by using $^{23}$Na NMR. We determine the intrinsic behavior of the uniform \textbf{q} $ = 0$ susceptibility via shift measurements and the dynamical response by probing the spin-lattice relaxation rate. Throughout the studied temperature range, the susceptibility is consistent with a semimetal behavior, though with electronic bands substantially modified by correlations. Remarkably, the antiferromagnetic fluctuations present in the insulating parent compound Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$ sur…
We have investigated the effect of Cu substitution in Eu2(Ir1-xCux)2O7 with the help of magnetic and transport property measurements. XPS measurement reveals that each Cu2+ converts Ir4+ to double amount of Ir5+ ions. The metal-insulator transition temperature (T_MI) is obtained around 120 K. In the insulating phase, at lower temperature below 50 K, the temperature dependent resistivity follows a power law dependence and the magnitude of the exponent increases with Cu concentrations. The temperature dependent thermopower is observed to follow the electrical resistivity down to 50 K, except for…
Spin-orbit effects in heavy 5$d$ transition metal oxides, in particular, iridates, have received enormous current interest due to the prediction as well as the realization of a plethora of exotic and unconventional magnetic properties. While a bulk of these works are based on tetravalent iridates ($d^5$), where the counter-intuitive insulating state of the rather extended 5$d$ orbitals are explained by invoking strong spin-orbit coupling, the recent quest in iridate research has shifted to the other valencies of Ir, of which pentavalent iridates constitute a notable representative. In contrast…
We address the concomitant metal-insulator transition (MIT) and antiferromagnetic ordering in the novel pyrochlore iridate Eu2Ir2O7 by combining x-ray absorption spectroscopy, x-ray and neutron diffractions and density functional theory (DFT) based calculations. The temperature dependent powder x-ray diffraction clearly rules out any change in the lattice symmetry below the MIT, nevertheless a clear anomaly in the Ir-O-Ir bond angle and Ir-O bond length is evident at the onset of MIT. From the x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopic study of Ir-L3 and L2 edges, the effective…
Using density functional theory and LDA+U method, we investigate magnetic and electronic structure of Y$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and rare-earth based pyrochlore iridates. Our study reveals that the ground state is a non-collinear magnetic insulating state. Due to strong spin-orbit coupling in Ir 5\textit{d}, there is an unusual correlation between the bands near Fermi level and the magnetization direction, resulting in a possibility of insulator-to-metal transition under applied magnetic field. This makes pyrochlore iridates a good candidate for possible magnetoressitance and magnetooptical applic…
Novel phases of two dimensional electron systems resulting from new surface or interface modified electronic structures have generated significant interest in material science. We utilize photoemission spectroscopy to show that the near-surface electronic structure of a bulk insulating iridate Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ lying near metal-Mott insulator transition exhibit weak metallicity signified by finite electronic spectral weight at the Fermi level. The surface electrons exhibit a unique spin structure resulting from an interplay of spin-orbit, Coulomb interaction and surface quantum magnetism, dist…
We study the prototype 5d pyrochlore iridate Y2Ir2O7 from first principles using the local density approximation and dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). We map out the phase diagram in the space of temperature, onsite Coulomb repulsion U, and filling. Consistent with experiments, we find that an all-in-all-out ordered insulating phase is stable for realistic values of U. The trigonal crystal field enhances the magnetic moments of the jeff=1/2 doublet, and strong inter-band correlations are induced by the Coulomb interaction, which indicates that a three-band description is important. We de…
We propose an insulating 2D phase of IrO$_{2}$, predicted by $\textit{ab initio}$ evolutionary algorithms. The predicted phase is a van der Waals crystal, in which Ir forms a triangular lattice, and is energetically competitive with the metastable spinel phase, observed experimentally. Electronic structure calculations show that the magnetic properties of this phase are highly nontrivial, with an almost perfect degeneracy of 120$^{\circ}$ $\textit{Neel}$ and $Y$-stripe orders, and unusually soft magnetic moments. The resulting behavior, which we term $\textit{easy plane anisotropy}$, is entire…
The goal of this work is studying the evolution of thermoelectric transport across the members of the Ruddlesden-Popper series iridates Srn+1IrnO3n+1, where a metal-insulator transition driven by bandwidth change occurs, from the strongly insulating Sr2IrO4 to the metallic non Fermi liquid behavior of SrIrO3. Sr2IrO4 (n=1), Sr3Ir2O7 (n=2) and SrIrO3 (n=inf.) polycrystals are synthesized at high pressure and characterized by structural, magnetic, electric and thermoelectric transport analyses. We find a complex thermoelectric phenomenology in the three compounds. Thermal diffusion of charge car…
Geometrical frustration and spin-orbit coupling effect together play vital role to influence properties in pyrochlore based iridium oxides. Here we have investigated detailed structural, magnetic, thermodynamic and transport properties of pyrochlore iridate Y$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. Magnetization data show onset of magnetic irreversibility around temperature $T_{irr}$ $\sim$ 160 K, however, no sign of long-range type ferromagnetic ordering is observed below $T_{irr}$. Specific heat data show no visible anomaly across $T_{irr}$, and the analysis of data indicate sizable density of states across Fermi l…
We perform combined density functional and dynamical mean-field calculations to study the pyrochlore iridates Lu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, Y$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ and Eu$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. Both single-site and cluster dynamical mean-field calculations are performed and spin-orbit coupling is included. Paramagnetic metallic phases, antiferromagnetic metallic phases with tilted Weyl cones and antiferromagnetic insulating phases are found. The magnetic phases display all-in/all-out magnetic ordering, consistent with previous studies. Unusually for electronically three dimensional materials, the single-site dynamical…
Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) plays a crucial role in magnetic and electronic properties of 5$d$ iridates. In this paper we have experimentally investigated the structural and physical properties of a series of Ir-based double perovskite compounds Pr$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$MgIrO$_6$ ($x$ = 0, 0.5, 1; hereafter abbreviated as PMIO, PSMIO1505, and PSMIO). Interestingly, these compounds have recently been proposed to undergo a transition from the spin-orbit-coupled Mott insulating phase at $x$ = 0 to the elusive half-metallic antiferromagnetic (HMAFM) state with Sr doping at $x$ = 1. However, our detailed magn…
Iridates such as Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ are of considerable interest owing to the formation of the Mott insulating state driven by a large spin-orbit coupling. However, in contrast to the expectation from the Nagaoka Theorem that a single doped hole or electron destroys the anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) state of the half-filled Hubbard model in the large U limit, the anti-ferromagnetism persists in the doped Iridates for a large dopant concentration beyond half-filling. With a tight-binding description of the relevant J$_{\rm eff}$ = 1/2 states by the third-neighbor ($t_1$, $t_2$, $t_3$, $U$) Hubbard model …
Iridates are characterized by a fascinating interplay of spin-orbit and electron-electron interactions. The honeycomb-lattice materials A2IrO3 (A=Na,Li) have been proposed to realize pseudospin-1/2 Mott insulating states with strongly anisotropic exchange interactions, described by the Heisenberg-Kitaev model, but other scenarios involving longer-range exchange interactions or more delocalized electrons have been put forward as well. Here we study the influence of non-magnetic doping, i.e., depleted moments, on the magnetic properties of experimentally relevant variants of the Heisenberg-Kitae…
In CaIrO3 electronic correlation, spin-orbit coupling, and tetragonal crystal field splitting are predicted to be of comparable strength. However, the nature of its ground state is still object of debate, with contradictory experimental and theoretical results. We probe the ground state of CaIrO3 and assess the effective tetragonal crystal field splitting and spin-orbit coupling at play in this system by means of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. We conclude that insulating CaIrO3 is not a jeff = 1/2 iridate and discuss the consequences of our finding to the interpretation of previous exper…
We report an experimental investigation of the two-dimensional ${J}_{\rm eff}$ = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Mott insulator by varying the interlayer exchange coupling in [(SrIrO$_3$)$_1$, (SrTiO$_3$)$_m$] ($m$ = 1, 2 and 3) superlattices. Although all samples exhibited an insulating ground state with long-range magnetic order, temperature-dependent resistivity measurements showed a stronger insulating behavior in the $m$ = 2 and $m$ = 3 samples than the $m$ = 1 sample which displayed a clear kink at the magnetic transition. This difference indicates that the blocking effect of the excessive SrTiO$_…
Effects of spin-orbit interactions in condensed matter are an important and rapidly evolving topic. Strong competition between spin-orbit, on-site Coulomb and crystalline electric field interactions in iridates drives exotic quantum states that are unique to this group of materials. In particular, the Jeff = 1/2 Mott state served as an early signal that the combined effect of strong spin-orbit and Coulomb interactions in iridates has unique, intriguing consequences. In this Key Issues Review, we survey some current experimental studies of iridates. In essence, these materials tend to defy conv…
Motivated by recent experiments and computational results on pyrochlore iridates, we compare single-particle properties of Y2Ir2O7 obtained from single-site dynamical mean-field calculations with results within the TRILEX approximation, where the latter takes non-local correlations into account. Our calculations are all based on ab-initio calculations within density-functional theory, and take spin-orbit coupling into account. In order to make the treatment within TRILEX feasible, we first define a single-band jeff = 1/2 model, by comparing its spectral features within DMFT to a three-band mod…
The electronic ground state in many iridate materials is described by a complex wave-function in which spin and orbital angular momenta are entangled due to relativistic spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Such a localized electronic state carries an effective total angular momentum of $J_{eff}=1/2$. In materials with an edge-sharing octahedral crystal structure, such as the honeycomb iridates Li2IrO3 and Na2IrO3, these $J_{eff}=1/2$ moments are expected to be coupled through a special bond-dependent magnetic interaction, which is a necessary condition for the realization of a Kitaev quantum spin liqui…
The antiferromagnetic structure of Sr3Ir2O7, the bilayer analogue of a spin-orbital Mott insulator Sr2IrO4, was revealed by resonant magnetic x-ray diffraction. Contrasting intensities of the magnetic diffraction at the Ir LIII and LII edges show a Jeff=1/2 character of the magnetic moment as is argued in Sr2IrO4. The magnitude of moment, however, was found to be smaller than that of Sr2IrO4 by a factor of 5-6, implying that Sr3Ir2O7 is no longer a Mott insulator but a weak antiferromagnet. An evident change of the temperature dependence of the resistivity at TN, from almost temperature-indepe…
A family of insulating iridates with chemical formula Li$_2$IrO$_3$ has recently been discovered, featuring three distinct crystal structures $α,β,γ$ (honeycomb, hyperhoneycomb, stripyhoneycomb). Measurements on the three-dimensional polytypes, $β$- and $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, found that they magnetically order into remarkably similar spiral phases, exhibiting a non-coplanar counter-rotating spiral magnetic order with equivalent q=0.57 wavevectors. We examine magnetic Hamiltonians for this family and show that the same triplet of nearest-neighbor Kitaev-Heisenberg-Ising (KJI) interactions reproduce…
The unusual magnetic and electronic ground states of 5d iridates has been shown to be driven by intrinsically enhanced spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The influence of appreciable but reduced SOC in creating the manifested magnetic insulating states in 4d oxides is less clear, with one hurdle being the existence of such compounds. Here we present experimental and theoretical results on Sr$_4$RhO$_6$ that reveal SOC dominated behavior. Neutron measurements show the octahedra are both spatially separated and locally ideal, making the electronic ground state susceptible to alterations by SOC. Magnetic…
We investigated the magnetic properties of the ilmenite-type iridate CdIrO$_3$ with a honeycomb lattice formed by Ir$^{4+}$ ions prepared via a solid-state metathesis. The magnetization measurements with using the powder sample reveal a large effective magnetic moment and a fairly strong antiferromagnetic interaction, indicating a deviation from the Kitaev model. Considering the relationship between magnetism and crystal structure in CdIrO$_3$ with comparing with the other ilmenite-type iridates ZnIrO$_3$ and MgIrO$_3$, we conclude that insulating CdIrO$_3$ cannot be describe as a $J_{\rm eff}…
Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) offers a large variety of novel and extraordinary magnetic and electronic properties in otherwise `ordinary pool' of heavy ion oxides. Here we present a detailed study on an apparently isolated hexagonal 2$H$ spin-chain $d^4$ iridate Sr$_3$LiIrO$_6$ (SLIO) with geometric frustration. Our structural studies clearly reveal perfect Li-Ir chemical order in this compound. Our combined experimental and {\it ab-initio} electronic structure investigations establish a magnetic ground state with finite Ir$^{5+}$ magnetic moments in this compound, contrary to the anticipated non…
Investigation of elementary excitations has advanced our understanding of many-body physics governing most physical properties of matter. Recently spin-orbit excitons have drawn much attention, whose condensates near phase transitions exhibit Higgs mode oscillations, a long-sought physical phenomenon [Nat. Phys. {\bf 13}, 633 (2017)]. These critical transition points resulting from competing spin-orbit coupling (SOC), local crystalline symmetry and exchange interactions, are not obvious in Iridium based materials, where SOC prevails in general. Here, we present results of resonant inelastic x-…
The interplay between spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and electron correlation ($U$) is considered for many exotic phenomena in iridium oxides. We have investigated the evolution of structural, magnetic and electronic properties in pyrochlore iridate Y$_2$Ir$_{2-x}$Ru$_{x}$O$_7$ where the substitution of Ru has been aimed to tune this interplay. The Ru substitution does not introduce any structural phase transition, however, we do observe an evolution of lattice parameters with the doping level $x$. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) study indicates Ru adopts charge state of Ru$^{4+}$ and replac…
The magnetic field response of the Mott-insulating honeycomb iridate Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ is investigated using torque magnetometry measurements in magnetic fields up to 60 tesla. A peak-dip structure is observed in the torque response at magnetic fields corresponding to an energy scale close to the zigzag ordering ($\approx 15~K$) temperature. Using exact diagonalization calculations, we show that such a distinctive signature in the torque response constrains the effective spin models for these classes of Kitaev materials to ones with dominant ferromagnetic Kitaev interactions, while alternative…
We report Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) study of the magnetic excitation spectrum in a highly insulating Eu$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ single crystal that exhibits a metal-insulator transition at $T_{MI}$ = 111(7) K. A propagating magnon mode with 20 meV bandwidth and 28 meV magnon gap is found in the excitation spectrum at 7 K, which is expected in the all-in-all-out (AIAO) magnetically ordered state. This magnetic excitation exhibits substantial softening as temperature is raised towards $T_{MI}$, and turns into highly damped excitation in the paramagnetic phase. Remarkably, the softe…
We point out the emergence of magnetism from the interplay of electron quasi-itinerancy and quantum order by disorder in pyrochlore iridates. Like other Mott insulating iridates, the Ir$^{4+}$ ion in pyrochlore iridates develops an effective ${J=1/2}$ moment from the on-site spin-orbit coupling. We consider the generic symmetry-allowed exchange between these local moments on a pyrochlore lattice and obtain the mean-field phase diagram. Assuming the superexchange is mediated by direct and/or indirect electron hopping via intermediate oxygens, we derive the exchange interactions in the strong co…
We perform a comparative magnetic study on two series of rare-earth (RE) based double perovskite iridates RE2BIrO6 (RE=Pr,Nd,Sm-Gd;B=Zn,Mg), which show Mott insulating state with tunable charge energy gap from ~330 meV to ~560 meV by changing RE cations. For nonmagnetic RE=Eu cations, Eu2MgIrO6 shows antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and field-induced spin-flop transitions below Néel temperature (TN) in comparison with the ferromagnetic (FM)-like behaviors of Eu2ZnIrO6 at low temperatures. For magnetic-moment-containing RE ions, Gd2BIrO6 show contrasting magnetic behaviors with FM-like transition …
The anomalous thermal expansion in a layered 3$d$-5$d$ based triple perovskite iridate Ba$_{3}$CoIr$_{2}$O$_{9}$ is investigated using high resolution synchrotron diffraction. Below the magneto-structural transition at 107\,K, the onset of antiferromagnetic order is associated with a monoclinic distortion of the hexagonal structure. Deeper within the magnetically ordered state, a part of the monoclinic phase distorts even further, and both these structural phases co-exist down to the lowest measured temperatures. We observe negative thermal expansion in this phase co-existence regime, which ap…
The magnetic structure of Ca$_2$MnReO$_6$ double perovskite is investigated by neutron powder diffraction and bulk magnetization, showing dominant non-collinear Mn magnetic moments [$4.35(7)$ $μ_B$] that are orthogonally aligned with the small Re moments [$0.22(4)$ $μ_B$]. $Ab$-initio electronic structure calculations show that the strong spin-orbit coupling for Re $5d$ electrons combined with a relatively modest on-site Coulomb repulsion ($U_{eff}^{Re} \gtrsim 0.6$ eV) is sufficient to render this material insulating. This is a rare example of spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator outside the re…
Insulating magnetic rare-earth pyrochlores related to spin ice host emergent bosonic monopolar spinons, which obey a magnetic analogue of quantum electrodynamics and may open a route to a magnetic analogue of electronics. However, the energy scales of the interactions among rare-earth moments are so low as 1 K that the possible quantum coherence can only be achieved at a sub-Kelvin. Here, we desgin high-temperature quantum spin ice materials from first principles. It is shown that the A-site deintercalated spinel iridate Ir2O4, which has been experimentally grown as epitaxial thin films, is a …
$J_{eff}$ states in a quasi one dimensional antiferromagnetic spin chain hexagonal Iridates Sr$_3$MIrO$_6$ (M=Mg, Zn, Cd): an $ab-initio$ comparative perspective
Iridates supply fertile grounds for unconventional phenomena and exotic electronic phases. With respect to well-studied octahedrally-coordinated iridates, we pay our attention to a rather unexplored iridate, Na4IrO4, showing an unusual square-planar coordination. The latter is key to rationalize the electronic structure and magnetic property of Na4IrO4, which is here explored by first-principles density functional theory and Monte Carlo simulations. Due to the uncommon square-planar crystal field, Ir 5d states adopt intermediate-spin state with double occupation of dz2 orbital, leading to a si…
Metal-insulator transitions in pyrochlore iridates (A2Ir2O7) are believed to occur due to subtle interplay of spin-orbit coupling, geometric frustration, and electron interactions. In particular, the nature of magnetic ordering of iridium ions in the insulating phase is crucial for understanding of several exotic phases recently proposed for these materials. We study the spectrum of magnetic excitations in the intermediate-coupling regime for the so-called all-in/all-out magnetic state in pyrochlore iridates with non-magnetic A-site ions (A=Eu,Y), which is found to be preferred in previous the…
We report the structure, magnetic, and thermal property measurements on single crystalline and polycrystalline samples of Ru substituted honeycomb lattice iridate Na$_2$Ir$_x$Ru$_{1-x}$O$_3$ (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5). The evolution of magnetism in Na$_2$Ir$_x$Ru$_{1-x}$O$_3$ has been studied using dc and ac magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. The parent compound Na$_2$IrO$_3$ is a spin-orbit driven Mott insulator with magnetic order of reduced moments below $T_N = 15$~K\@. In the Ru substituted samples the antiferromagnetic long range state is replaced by a s…
5d iridates have shown vast emergent phenomena due to a strong interplay among its lattice, charge and spin degrees of freedom, because of which the potential in spintronic application of the thin-film form is highly leveraged. Here we have epitaxially stabilized perovskite SrIr$_{0.8}$Sn$_{0.2}$O$_3$ on [001] SrTiO$_3$ substrates through pulsed laser deposition and systematically characterized the structural, electronic and magnetic properties. Physical properties measurements unravel an insulating ground state with a weak ferromagnetism in the compressively strained epitaxial film. The octah…
Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) often gives rise to interesting electronic and magnetic phases in an otherwise ordinary pool of paramagnetic heavy metal oxides. In presence of strong SOC, assumed to be working in $j$-$j$ coupling regime, 5$d^4$ iridates are generally speculated to possess a nonmagnetic $J_{eff}$~=~0 singlet ground state, which invariably gets masked due to different solid-state effects (e.g. hopping). Here, we try to probe the trueness of the atomic SOC-based proposal in an apparently 1-dimensional system, Sr$_3$NaIrO$_6$, possessing a 2$H$ hexagonal structure with well separated Ir…
