Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) often gives rise to interesting electronic and magnetic phases in an otherwise ordinary pool of paramagnetic heavy metal oxides. In presence of strong SOC, assumed to be working in $j$-$j$ coupling regime, 5$d^4$ iridates are generally speculated to possess a nonmagnetic $J_{eff}$~=~0 singlet ground state, which invariably gets masked due to different solid-state effects (e.g. hopping). Here, we try to probe the trueness of the atomic SOC-based proposal in an apparently 1-dimensional system, Sr$_3$NaIrO$_6$, possessing a 2$H$ hexagonal structure with well separated Ir$^{5+}$ (5$d^4$) ions. But all the detailed experimental as well as theoretical characterizations reveal that the ground state of Sr$_3$NaIrO$_6$ is not nonmagnetic, rather accommodating a significantly high effective magnetic moment on Ir$^{5+}$ ion. However our combined dc susceptibility ($χ$), ${}^{23}$Na nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), muon-spin-relaxation/rotation ($μ$SR) and heat capacity ($C_p$) measurements clearly refute any sign of spin-freezing or ordered magnetism among the Ir$^{5+}$ moments due to geometrical exchange frustration, while in-depth zero-field (ZF) and longitudinal field (LF) $μ$SR investigations strongly point towards inhomogeneous quantum spin-orbital liquid (QSOL)-like ground state. In addition, the linear temperature dependence of both the NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate and the magnetic heat capacity at low temperatures suggest low-lying gapless spin excitations in the QSOL phase of this material. Finally, we conclude that the effective SOC realised in $d^4$ iridates are unlikely to offer a ground state which will be consistent with a purely atomic $j$-$j$ coupling description.
Spin-orbit effects in heavy 5$d$ transition metal oxides, in particular, iridates, have received enormous current interest due to the prediction as well as the realization of a plethora of exotic and unconventional magnetic properties. While a bulk of these works are based on tetravalent iridates ($d^5$), where the counter-intuitive insulating state of the rather extended 5$d$ orbitals are explained by invoking strong spin-orbit coupling, the recent quest in iridate research has shifted to the other valencies of Ir, of which pentavalent iridates constitute a notable representative. In contrast…
Recent years have seen many examples of how the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) present in iridates can stabilize new emergent states that are difficult or impossible to realize in more conventional materials. In this review we outline a representative set of studies detailing how heterostructures based on Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) and perovskite iridates can be used to access yet more novel physics. Beginning with a short synopsis of iridate thin film growth, the effects of the heterostructure morphology on the RP iridates including Sr2IrO4 and SrIrO3 are discussed. Example studies explore the …
Recently, the effects of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in correlated materials have become one of the most actively studied subjects in condensed matter physics, as correlations and SOC together can lead to the discovery of new phases. Among candidate materials, iridium oxides (iridates) have been an excellent playground to uncover such novel phenomena. In this review, we discuss recent progress in iridates and related materials, focusing on the basic concepts, relevant microscopic Hamiltonians, and unusual properties of iridates in perovskite- and honeycomb-based structures. Perspectives on SOC a…
We investigate the doping effects of magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities injected to the honeycomb iridate sample of Na2IrO3 . Both the doping result in changing the ordering temperature as well as the Curie-Weiss temperature of the parent sample as a consequence of enhancement of the lattice frustration, screening of the Ir atoms and spin-orbit effects that reflects in the susceptibility and specific heat measurements. Our findings are corroborated by a detailed comparative study of various magnetic and nonmagnetic impurity atoms that have notable effects on different electronic properties of…
A three-orbital-model approach for studying spin wave excitations in the strongly spin-orbit coupled layered perovskite iridates is presented which provides a unified description of magnetic excitations as well as the electronic band structure. The calculated spin wave dispersions with realistic three-band parameters are in excellent agreement with the RIXS data for iridates, including the strong AF zone boundary dispersion in the single-layer compound $\rm Sr_2 Ir O_4$ and the large anisotropy gap in the bilayer compound $\rm Sr_3 Ir_2 O_7$. The RIXS spin wave data is shown to provide evidenc…
The electronic ground state in many iridate materials is described by a complex wave-function in which spin and orbital angular momenta are entangled due to relativistic spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Such a localized electronic state carries an effective total angular momentum of $J_{eff}=1/2$. In materials with an edge-sharing octahedral crystal structure, such as the honeycomb iridates Li2IrO3 and Na2IrO3, these $J_{eff}=1/2$ moments are expected to be coupled through a special bond-dependent magnetic interaction, which is a necessary condition for the realization of a Kitaev quantum spin liqui…
Using ab-initio methods for correlated electrons in solids, we investigate the metal-insulator transition across the Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) series of iridates and explore the robustness of the J_eff=1/2 state against band effects due to itineracy, tetragonal distortion, octahedral rotation and Coulomb interaction. We predict the effects of epitaxial strain on the optical conductivity, magnetic moments, and J_eff=1/2 ground-state wave functions in the RP series. To describe the solution of the many-body problem in an intuitive picture, we introduce a concept of energy-dependent atomic states, w…
Motivated by an experimental report of iridate superlattices, we performed first-principle electronic structure calculations for SrIrO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$. Heterostructuring causes SrIrO$_3$ to become Sr$_2$IrO$_4$-like, and the system has the well-defined $j_{\rm eff}$=1/2 states near the Fermi level as well as canted antiferromagnetic order within the quasi-two-dimensional IrO$_2$ plane. In response to a larger tensile strain, the band gap is increased due to the resulting increase in bond length and the bandwidth reduction. The ground state magnetic properties are discussed in comparison to the m…
The nature of the effective spin Hamiltonian and magnetic order in the honeycomb iridates is explored by considering a trigonal crystal field effect and spin-orbit coupling. Starting from a Hubbard model, an effective spin Hamiltonian is derived in terms of an emergent pseudo-spin-1/2 moment in the limit of large trigonal distortions and spin-orbit coupling. The present pseudo-spins arise from a spin-orbital locking and are different from the jeff = 1/2 moments that are obtained when the spin-orbit coupling dominates and trigonal distortions are neglected. The resulting spin Hamiltonian is ani…
We construct a model for interacting electrons with strong spin orbit coupling in the pyrochlore iridates. We establish the importance of the direct hopping process between the Ir atoms and use the relative strength of the direct and indirect hopping as a generic tuning parameter to study the correlation effects across the iridates family. We predict novel quantum phase transitions between conventional and/or topologically non-trivial phases. At weak coupling, we find topological insulator and metallic phases. As one increases the interaction strength, various magnetic orders emerge. The topol…
We have synthesized and studied a new iridate, Ba13Ir6O30, with unusual Ir oxidation states: 2/3 Ir6+(5d3) ions and 1/3 Ir5+(5d4) ions. Its crystal structure features dimers of face-sharing IrO6 octahedra, and IrO6 monomers, that are linked via long, zigzag Ir-O-Ba-O-Ir pathways. Nevertheless, Ba13Ir6O30 exhibits two transitions at TN1 = 4.7 K and TN2 = 1.6 K. This magnetic order is accompanied by a huge Sommerfeld coefficient 200 mJ/mole K below TN2, signaling a coexisting frustrated/disordered state persisting down to at least 0.05 K. This iridate hosts unusually large Jeff=3/2 degrees of fr…
There have been lots of interest in pyrochlore Iridates A2Ir2O7 where both strong spin-orbital coupling and strong correlation are present. A recent LDA calculation suggests that the system is likely in a novel three dimensional topological semi-metallic phase: a Weyl semi-metal. Such a system has zero carrier density and arrives at the quantum limit even in a weak magnetic field. In this paper we discuss two novel quantum effects of this system in a magnetic field: a pressure-induced anomalous Hall effect and a magnetic field induced charge density wave at the pinned wavevector connecting Wey…
To determine the strength of essential electronic and magnetic interactions in the iridates Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and Ba$_2$IrO$_4$ - potential platforms for high-temperature superconductivity - we use many-body techniques from wavefunction-based electronic-structure theory. Multiplet physics, spin-orbit interactions, and Ir-O hybridization are all treated on equal footing, fully {\it ab initio}. Our calculations put the lowest d-d excitations of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$/Ba$_2$IrO$_4$ at 0.69/0.64 eV, substantially lower than in isostructural cuprates. Charge-transfer excitations start at 3.0/1.9 eV and the magn…
Scalar spin chirality is expected to induce a finite contribution to the Hall response at low temperatures. We study this spin-chirality-driven Hall effect, known as the topological Hall effect, at the manganite side of the interface between La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ and SrIrO$_3$. The ferromagnetic double-exchange hopping at the manganite layer, in conjunction with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction which arises at the interface due to broken inversion symmetry and strong spin-orbit coupling from the iridate layer, could produce a skyrmion-crystal (SkX) phase in the presence of an e…
We investigate the metal-insulator transition in the layered Ruddelsden Popper series of strontium iridates Srn+1IrnO3n+1. Tight-binding models of t2g orbitals for n = 1, 2, and infinity are constructed, and changes in band dispersion due to dimensionality and spin-orbit coupling are presented. Identifying the states near the Fermi level to be predominantly Jeff = 1/2, we use an effective Hubbard model to study the effect of correlations. Transitions from a metallic state to various magnetically ordered states at different critical interactions are obtained. A canted antiferromagnetic insulato…
Effects of spin-orbit interactions in condensed matter are an important and rapidly evolving topic. Strong competition between spin-orbit, on-site Coulomb and crystalline electric field interactions in iridates drives exotic quantum states that are unique to this group of materials. In particular, the Jeff = 1/2 Mott state served as an early signal that the combined effect of strong spin-orbit and Coulomb interactions in iridates has unique, intriguing consequences. In this Key Issues Review, we survey some current experimental studies of iridates. In essence, these materials tend to defy conv…
The spin-orbit coupling (SOC) interactions, electron correlation effects and Hund coupling cooperate and compete with each other, leading to novel properties, quantum phase and non-trivial topological electronic behavior in iridium oxides. Because of the well separated IrO6 octahedra approaching cubic crystal-field limit, the hexagonal iridates Sr3MIrO6 (M = Sr, Na and Li) serves as a canonical model system to investigate the underlying physical properties that arises from the novel Jeff state. Based on density functional theory calculations complemented by Green's function methods, we systema…
We present magnetization and Hall effect measurements on the pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7. Previous muon spin rotation measurements have shown that the system undergoes an unusual transition at T$_M$ = 110 K into a magnetic phase lacking long-range order, followed by a transition at T$_LRO$ = 6 K into a state with long-range magnetic order. We observe a small remnant magnetization when cycling through zero magnetic field at temperatures below T$_M$. Below T$_LRO$, this remnant magnetization increases sharply, and new hysteresis effects appear at a higher field B$_c$ = 2.5 T, while the Hall resi…
We theoretically investigate emergent quantum phases in the thin film geometries of the pyrochore iridates, where a number of exotic quantum ground states are proposed to occur in bulk materials as a result of the interplay between electron correlation and strong spin-orbit coupling. The fate of these bulk phases as well as novel quantum states that may arise only in the thin film platforms, are studied via a theoretical model that allows layer-dependent magnetic structures. It is found that the magnetic order develop in inhomogeneous fashions in the thin film geometries. This leads to a varie…
We present a simple technique to calculate spin-orbit coupling, $\langle {\bf L}\cdot{\bf S} \rangle$, and branching ratio measured in x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Our method is for first-principles electronic structure calculation and its implementation is straightforward for any of standard formulations and codes. We applied this technique to several different large spin-orbit coupling iridates. The calculated $\langle{ {\bf L}\cdot{\bf S}} \rangle$ and branching ratio of a prototype $j_{\rm eff}$=1/2 Mott insulator, Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, are in good agreement with recent experimental data over t…
We investigate the dynamical properties of ${\rm Na_2IrO_3}$. For five effective models proposed for ${\rm Na_2IrO_3}$, we numerically calculate dynamical structure factors (DSFs) with an exact diagonalization method. An effective model obtained from $ab$ $initio$ calculations explains inelastic neutron scattering experiments adequately. We further calculate excitation modes based on linearized spin-wave theory. The spin-wave excitation of the effective models obtained by $ab$ $initio$ calculations disagrees with the low-lying excitation of DSFs. We attribute this discrepancy to the location o…
We studied Sr2IrO4 and Sr3Ir2O7 using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), making direct experimental determinations of intra- and inter-cell coupling parameters as well as Mott correlations and gap sizes. The results are generally consistent with LDA+U+Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) calculations, though the calculations missed the momentum positions of the dominant electronic states and neglected the importance of inter-cell coupling on the size of the Mott gap. The calculations also ignore the correlation-induced spectral peak widths, which are critical for making a connection to ac…
Iridates such as Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ are of considerable interest owing to the formation of the Mott insulating state driven by a large spin-orbit coupling. However, in contrast to the expectation from the Nagaoka Theorem that a single doped hole or electron destroys the anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) state of the half-filled Hubbard model in the large U limit, the anti-ferromagnetism persists in the doped Iridates for a large dopant concentration beyond half-filling. With a tight-binding description of the relevant J$_{\rm eff}$ = 1/2 states by the third-neighbor ($t_1$, $t_2$, $t_3$, $U$) Hubbard model …
We investigate magnetic excitations in iridium insulators with pentavalent Ir$^{5+}$ ($5d^4$) ions with strong spin-orbit coupling. We obtain a microscopic model based on the local Ir$^{5+}$ multiplets involving $J=0$ (singlet), $J=1$ (triplet), and $J=2$ (quintet) spin-orbital states. We get effective interactions between these multiplets on square and face-centered-cubic (fcc) structures of magnetic ions in the layered-perovskites and the double-perovkites, in particular Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$. Further, we derive an effective spin-orbital Hamiltonian in terms of bond bosons and explore possible inst…
Geometrical frustration and spin-orbit coupling effect together play vital role to influence properties in pyrochlore based iridium oxides. Here we have investigated detailed structural, magnetic, thermodynamic and transport properties of pyrochlore iridate Y$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. Magnetization data show onset of magnetic irreversibility around temperature $T_{irr}$ $\sim$ 160 K, however, no sign of long-range type ferromagnetic ordering is observed below $T_{irr}$. Specific heat data show no visible anomaly across $T_{irr}$, and the analysis of data indicate sizable density of states across Fermi l…
An effective low-energy Hamiltonian of itinerant electrons for iridium oxide Na2IrO3 is derived by an ab initio downfolding scheme. The model is then reduced to an effective spin model on a honeycomb lattice by the strong coupling expansion. Here we show that the ab initio model contains spin-spin anisotropic exchange terms in addition to the extensively studied Kitaev and Heisenberg exchange interactions, and allows to describe the experimentally observed zigzag magnetic order, interpreted as the state stabilized by the antiferromagnetic coupling of the ferromagnetic chains. We clarify possib…
The resonant X-ray scattering (magnetic elastic, RXMS, and inelastic, RIXS) of Ir$^{4+}$ at the L$_{2,3}$ edges relevant to spin-orbit Mott insulators A$_{n+1}$Ir$_{n}$O$_{3n+1}$ (A=Sr, Ba, etc.) are calculated using a single-ion model which treats the spin-orbit and tetragonal crystal-field terms on an equal footing. Both RXMS and RIXS in the spin-flip channel are found to display a non-trivial dependence on the direction of the magnetic moment, $\boldsymbolμ$. Crucially, we show that for $\boldsymbolμ$ in the \emph{ab}-plane, RXMS at the L$_2$ edge is zero \emph{irrespective} of the tetragon…
The recently discovered three-dimensional hyperhoneycomb iridate, $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, has raised hopes for the realization of dominant Kitaev interaction between spin-orbit entangled local moments due to its near-ideal lattice structure. If true, this material may lie close to the sought-after quantum spin liquid phase in three dimensions. Utilizing ab-initio electronic structure calculations, we first show that the spin-orbit entangled basis, $j_{\rm eff}$=1/2, correctly captures the low energy electronic structure. The effective spin model derived in the strong coupling limit supplemented by …
We study theoretically the effects of f-d magnetic exchange interaction in the R$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ pyrochlore iridates. The R$^{3+}$ f-electrons form localized magnetic doublets due to the crystal field environment, while the Ir$^{4+}$ d- electrons are more itinerant and feel a strong spin-orbit coupling. We construct and analyze a minimal model capturing this physics, treating the Ir subsystem using a Hubbard-type model. First neglecting the Hubbard interaction, we find Weyl semi-metal and Axion insulator phases induced by the f-d exchange. Next, we find that f-d exchange can cooperate with the …
We present resistivity, magnetization, and zero field muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) data for the pyrochlore iridate materials Nd$_{2-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ ($x = 0, 0.06$, and $0.10$) and Sm$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. While Nd$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (Nd227) is weakly conducting, Sm$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (Sm227) has slowly diverging resistivity at low temperature. Nd227 and Sm227 exhibit magnetic anomalies at $T_{M} = 105 K$ and $137 K$, respectively. However, zero-field $μ$SR measurements show that long-range magnetic order of the Ir$^{4+}$ sublattice sets in at much lower temperatures ($T_{LRO} \sim 8 K…
Analogs of the high-T$_c$ cuprates have been long sought after in transition metal oxides. Due to the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the $5d$ perovskite iridates Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ exhibit a low-energy electronic structure remarkably similar to the cuprates. Whether a superconducting state exists as in the cuprates requires understanding the correlated spin-orbit entangled electronic states. Recent experiments discovered hidden order in the parent and electron doped iridates, some with striking analogies to the cuprates, including Fermi surface pockets, Fermi arcs, and pseudogap. Here, we study …
The magnetic structure and electronic groundstate of the layered perovskite Ba2IrO4 have been investigated using x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS). Our results are compared with those for Sr2IrO4, for which we provide supplementary data on its magnetic structure. We find that the dominant, long-range antiferromagnetic order is remarkably similar in the two compounds, and that the electronic groundstate in Ba2IrO4, deduced from an investigation of the XRMS $L_3/L_2$ intensity ratio, is consistent with a $J_{eff}=1/2$ description. The robustness of these two key electronic properties to …
Investigation of elementary excitations has advanced our understanding of many-body physics governing most physical properties of matter. Recently spin-orbit excitons have drawn much attention, whose condensates near phase transitions exhibit Higgs mode oscillations, a long-sought physical phenomenon [Nat. Phys. {\bf 13}, 633 (2017)]. These critical transition points resulting from competing spin-orbit coupling (SOC), local crystalline symmetry and exchange interactions, are not obvious in Iridium based materials, where SOC prevails in general. Here, we present results of resonant inelastic x-…
We explore the response of Ir $5d$ orbitals to pressure in $β$-$\mathrm{Li_2IrO_3}$, a hyperhoneycomb iridate in proximity to a Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground state. X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals a reconstruction of the electronic ground state below 2 GPa, the same pressure range where x-ray magnetic circular dichroism shows an apparent collapse of magnetic order. The electronic reconstruction, which manifests a reduction in the effective spin-orbit (SO) interaction in $5d$ orbitals, pushes $β$-$\mathrm{Li_2IrO_3}$ further away from the pure $J_{\rm eff}=1/2$ limit. Although l…
A burning question in the emerging field of spin-orbit driven insulating iridates, such as Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 is whether the observed insulating state should be classified as a Mott-Hubbard insulator derived from a half-filled relativistic j_eff=1/2 band or as a band insulator where the gap is assisted by spin-orbit interaction, or Coulomb correlations, or both. The difference between these two interpretations is that only for the former, strong spin-orbit coupling (lambda >~ W, where W is the band width) is essential. We have synthesized the isostructural and isoelectronic Li2RhO3 and report…

Hyperkagome iridate, Na$_4$Ir$_3$O$_8$, has been regarded as a promising candidate material for a three-dimensional quantum spin liquid. Here the three-dimensional network of corner-sharing triangles forms the hyperkagome lattice of Ir$^{4+}$ ions. Due to strong spin-orbit coupling, the local moments of Ir$^{4+}$ ions are described by the pseudospin $j_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ Kramers doublet. The Heisenberg model on this lattice is highly frustrated and quantum/classical versions have been studied in earlier literature. In this work, we derive a generic local-moment model beyond the Heisenberg limit …
Strong Coulomb repulsion and spin-orbit coupling are known to give rise to exotic physical phenomena in transition metal oxides. Initial attempts to investigate systems where both of these fundamental interactions are comparably strong, such as 3d and 5d complex oxide superlattices, have revealed properties that only slightly differ from the bulk ones of the constituent materials. Here, we observe that the interfacial coupling between the 3d antiferromagnetic insulator SrMnO3 and the 5d paramagnetic metal SrIrO3 is enormously strong, yielding an anomalous Hall response as the result of charge …
The antiferromagnetic structure of Sr3Ir2O7, the bilayer analogue of a spin-orbital Mott insulator Sr2IrO4, was revealed by resonant magnetic x-ray diffraction. Contrasting intensities of the magnetic diffraction at the Ir LIII and LII edges show a Jeff=1/2 character of the magnetic moment as is argued in Sr2IrO4. The magnitude of moment, however, was found to be smaller than that of Sr2IrO4 by a factor of 5-6, implying that Sr3Ir2O7 is no longer a Mott insulator but a weak antiferromagnet. An evident change of the temperature dependence of the resistivity at TN, from almost temperature-indepe…
We have explored the critical metal-insulator phenomena for pyrochlore-type $R_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, in which electron correlation strength and magnetic configuration are systematically controlled by varying the average rare-earth ionic radius ($R$=Nd$_{1-x}$Pr$_{x}$ and Sm$_{y}$Nd$_{1-y}$), external pressure, and magnetic field. Metal-insulator transitions in bulk are caused by increasing $x$ or tuning external pressure, indicating that the effective electron correlation is responsible for the transition. The metallic state intervenes between the paramagnetic insulating and antiferromagnetically ord…
In the pyrochlore iridates, \textit{R}$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (\textit{R} = Lanthanide, Y), determination of the magnetic structure of the iridium moments remains an outstanding problem despite the role this is expected to play in the formation of novel band structures and topologies in these materials. In this work, a new analysis of the experimentally measured spontaneous muon spin precession frequency is presented which incorporates both probabilistic and \textit{ab-initio} modeling techniques to determine the ground state magnetic structure. It is shown that the experimentally observed resul…
In 5d transition metal oxides such as the iridates, novel properties arise from the interplay of electron correlations and spin-orbit interactions. We investigate the electronic structure of the pyrochlore iridates, (such as Y$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$) using density functional theory, LDA+U method, and effective low energy models. A remarkably rich phase diagram emerges on tuning the correlation strength U. The Ir magnetic moment are always found to be non-collinearly ordered. However, the ground state changes from a magnetic metal at weak U, to a Mott insulator at large U. Most interestingly, the…
We have synthesized single crystals of Na$_2$(Ir$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$)O$_3$ and polycrystals of Li$_2$(Ir$_{1-x}$Ti$_x$)O$_3$ and studied the effect of magnetic depletion on the magnetic properties by measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and magnetocaloric effect at temperatures down to 0.1~K. In both systems, the non-magnetic substitution rapidly changes the magnetically ordered ground state into a spin glass, indicating strong frustration. While for the Li system the Weiss temperature $Θ_{\rm W}$ remains unchanged up to $x=0.55$, a strong decrease $|Θ_{\rm W}|$ is found for th…
We have successfully synthesized the novel antiferromagnets with Ir$^{4+}$ honeycomb lattice ZnIrO$_3$ and MgIrO$_3$ and investigated their magnetic and thermodynamic properties. The two iridates are isomorphic but exhibit qualitatively different magnetic properties. ZnIrO$_3$ shows antiferromagnetic ordering below 46.6 K, whereas MgIrO$_3$ displays weak ferromagnetic behavior below 31.8 K owing to formation of a canted antiferromagnetic ordering. The measurement of magnetic susceptibility with using an oriented powder sample revealed the presence of an XY-like magnetic anisotropy and a tiltin…
Hyperhoneycomb iridate $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ is a three-dimensional analogue of two-dimensional honeycomb iridates, such as $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, which recently appeared as another playground for the physics of Kitaev-type spin liquid. $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ shows a non-collinear spiral ordering of spin-orbital-entangled $J_{\rm eff}$ = 1/2 moments at low temperature, which is known to be suppressed under a pressure of $\sim$2 GPa. With further increase of pressure, a structural transition is observed at $P_{\rm S}$ $\sim$ 4 GPa at room temperature. Using the neutron powder diffraction technique, the crys…
Pyrochlore iridates A2Ir2O7 (A = rare earth elements, Y or Bi) hold great promise for realizing novel electronic and magnetic states owing to the interplay of spin-orbit coupling, electron correlation and geometrical frustration. A prominent example is the formation of all-in/all-out (AIAO)antiferromagnetic order in the Ir4+ sublattice that comprises of corner-sharing tetrahedra. Here we report on an unusual magnetic phenomenon, namely a cooling-field induced shift of magnetic hysteresis loop along magnetization axis, and its possible origin in pyrochlore iridates with non-magnetic Ir defects …
Motivated by experiments on the carrier-doped bilayer iridate $(\text{Sr}_{1-x}\text{La}_x)_3\text{Ir}_2\text{O}_7$, we study the dynamics of a single doped electron in a bilayer magnet in the presence of spin-orbit coupling, taking into account the spatially staggered rotation of IrO$_6$ octahedra. We employ an effective single-orbital bilayer $t$-$J$ model, concentrating on the quantum paramagnetic phase near the magnetic quantum critical point. We determine the carrier dispersion using a combination of self-consistent Born and bond-operator techniques. Extrapolating to finite small carrier …
Using resonant x-ray diffraction, we observe an easy c-axis collinear antiferromagnetic structure for the bilayer Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$, a significant contrast to the single layer Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ with in-plane canted moments. Based on a microscopic model Hamiltonian, we show that the observed spin-flop transition as a function of number of IrO$_2$ layers is due to strong competition among intra- and inter-layer bond-directional pseudo-dipolar interactions of the spin-orbit entangled $J_{eff}$=1/2 moments. With this we unravel the origin of anisotropic exchange interactions in a Mott insulator in the…
The spin-orbit coupled double perovskite iridate Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$ with $d^4$ occupancy of Ir is considered as a candidate material for a non-magnetic $J=0$ ground state. The issue of existence of such a state in Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$ however has opened up intense debates both in experimental and theoretical studies. In this study, we revisit the issue using \textit{ab-initio} density functional combined with dynamical mean-field theory to investigate the magnetic properties of Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$ down to zero temperature. To reach the ground state, a recently developed impurity solver based on tensor-produc…
The $f$-$d$ magnetic exchange interaction is considered to be a key ingredient for many exotic topological phases in pyrochlore iridates. Here, we have investigated the evolution of structural, magnetic and electronic properties in doped pyrochlore iridate, (Y$_{1-x}$Pr$_x$)$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. Apart from geometrical frustration, pyrochlore iridates are well known for its active spin-orbit coupling effect. The substitution of Pr$^{3+}$ (4$f^2$) for the nonmagnetic Y$^{3+}$ (4$d^0$) acts as a magnetic doping, which provides an ideal platform to study $f$-$d$ exchange interaction without altering th…
The electronic structure of Sr$_3$CuIrO$_6$, a model system for the 5d Ir ion in an octahedral environment, is studied through a combination of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and theoretical calculations. RIXS spectra at the Ir L$_3$-edge reveal an Ir $t_{2g}$ manifold that is split into three levels, in contrast to the expectations of the strong spin-orbit-coupling limit. Effective Hamiltonian and $ab inito$ quantum chemistry calculations find a strikingly large non-cubic crystal field splitting comparable to the spin-orbit coupling, which results in a strong mixing of the $j_{\ma…
By ab initio many-body quantum chemistry calculations, we determine the strength of the symmetric anisotropy in the 5$d^5$ j $\approx$ 1/2 layered material Ba$_2$IrO$_4$. While the calculated anisotropic couplings come out in the range of a few meV, orders of magnitude stronger than in analogous 3d transition-metal compounds, the Heisenberg superexchange still defines the largest energy scale. The ab initio results reveal that individual layers of Ba$_2$IrO$_4$ provide a close realization of the quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg-compass model on the square lattice. We show that the experimentally ob…
Over the past few years bulk pyrochlore iridates of the form $A_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ (where $A$ is a rare earth element, Ir is iridium, and O is oxygen) have been studied as model systems for investigating the interplay of electronic correlations and strong spin-orbit coupling, particularly with the aim of finding correlation-driven topological phases. In this work, we use cellular dynamical mean field theory (CDMFT) to study effects of electronic correlations beyond Hartree-Fock theory in thin films of pyrochlore irradiates grown along the $[111]$ direction. We focus on the bilayer and trilayer syst…
The structural and magnetic properties of a new series of iridium-based honeycomb lattices with the formula Na3-delta(Na1-xMgx)Ir2O6 (x = 0 to 1) are reported. As x and delta are increased, the honeycomb lattice contracts and the strength of the antiferromagnetic interactions decreases systematically due to a reduction in Ir-O-Ir bond angles. Samples with imperfect stoichiometry exhibit disordered magnetic freezing at temperatures Tf between 3.4 K and 5 K. This glassy magnetism likely arises due to the presence of non-magnetic Ir3+, which are distributed randomly throughout the lattice, with a…
The novel electronic state of the canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator, strontium iridate (Sr2IrO4) has been well described by the spin-orbit-entangled isospin Jeff = 1/2, but the role of isospin in transport phenomena remains poorly understood. In this study, antiferromagnet-based spintronic functionality is demonstrated by combining unique characteristics of the isospin state in Sr2IrO4. Based on magnetic and transport measurements, large and highly anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) is obtained by manipulating the antiferromagnetic isospin domains. First-principles calculations suggest…
Spinons are well-known as the elementary excitations of one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chains, but means to realize spinons in higher dimensions is the subject of intense research. Here, we use resonant x-ray scattering to study the layered trimer iridate Ba4Ir3O10, which shows no magnetic order down to 0.2 K. An emergent one-dimensional spinon continuum is observed that can be well-described by XXZ spin-1/2 chains with magnetic exchange of ~55 meV and a small Ising-like anisotropy. With 2% isovalent Sr doping, magnetic order appears below TN=130 K along with sharper excitations, indicating…
