By a metric fractal we understand a compact metric space $K$ endowed with a finite family $\mathcal F$ of contracting self-maps of $K$ such that $K=\bigcup_{f\in\mathcal F}f(K)$. If $K$ is a subset of a metric space $X$ and each $f\in\mathcal F$ extends to a contracting self-map of $X$, then we say that $(K,\mathcal F)$ is a fractal in $X$. We prove that each metric fractal $(K,\mathcal F)$ is
$\bullet$ isometrically equivalent to a fractal in the Banach spaces $C[0,1]$ and $\ell_\infty$;
$\bullet$ bi-Lipschitz equivalent to a fractal in the Banach space $c_0$;
$\bullet$ isometrically equivalent to a fractal in the Hilbert space $\ell_2$ if $K$ is an ultrametric space.
We prove that for a metric fractal $(K,\mathcal F)$ with the doubling property there exists $k\in\mathbb N$ such that the metric fractal $(K,\mathcal F^{\circ k})$ endowed with the fractal structure $\mathcal F^{\circ k}=\{f_1\circ\dots\circ f_k:f_1,\dots,f_k\in\mathcal F\}$ is equi-Hölder equivalent to a fractal in a Euclidean space $\mathbb R^d$. This result is used to prove our main result saying that each finite-dimensional compact metrizable space $K$ containing an open uncountable zero-dimensional space $Z$ is homeomorphic to a fractal in a Euclidean space $\mathbb R^d$. For $Z$, being a copy of the Cantor set, this embedding result was proved by Duvall and Husch in 1992.
A topological space $X$ is called a topological fractal if $X=\bigcup_{f\in\mathcal F}f(X)$ for a finite system $\mathcal F$ of continuous self-maps of $X$, which is topologically contracting in the sense that for every open cover $\mathcal U$ of $X$ there is a number $n\in\mathbb N$ such that for any functions $f_1,\dots,f_n\in \mathcal F$, the set $f_1\circ\dots\circ f_n(X)$ is contained in some set $U\in\mathcal U$. If, in addition, all functions $f\in\mathcal F$ have Lipschitz constant $<1$ with respect to some metric generating the topology of $X$, then the space $X$ is called a Banach fr…
We establish pointwise and distributional fractal tube formulas for a large class of compact subsets of Euclidean spaces of arbitrary dimensions. These formulas are expressed as sums of residues of suitable meromorphic functions over the complex dimensions of the compact set under consideration (i.e., over the poles of its fractal zeta function). Our results generalize to higher dimensions (and in a significant way) the corresponding ones previously obtained for fractal strings by the first author and van Frankenhuijsen. They are illustrated by several examples and applied to yield a new Minko…
We construct Dirac operators and spectral triples for certain, not necessarily self-similar, fractal sets built on curves. Connes' distance formula of noncommutative geometry provides a natural metric on the fractal. To motivate the construction, we address Kigami's measurable Riemannian geometry, which is a metric realization of the Sierpinski gasket as a self-affine space with continuously differentiable geodesics. As a fractal analog of Connes' theorem for a compact Riemmanian manifold, it is proved that the natural metric coincides with Kigami's geodesic metric. This present work extends t…
This paper introduces a notion of differential forms on closed, potentially fractal, subsets of Euclidean space by defining pointwise cotangent spaces using the restriction of $C^1$ functions to this set. Aspects of cohomology are developed: it is shown that the differential forms are a Banach algebra and it is possible to integrate these forms along rectifiable paths. These definitions are connected to the theory of differential forms on Dirichlet spaces by considering fractals with finite energy coordinates. In this situation, the $C^1$ differential forms project onto the space of Dirichlet …
We continue our study of 'no-dimension' analogues of basic theorems in combinatorial and convex geometry in Banach spaces. We generalize some results of the paper \cite{adiprasito2019theorems} and prove no-dimension versions of colorful Tverberg's theorem, selection lemma and the weak $ε$-net theorem in Banach spaces of type $p > 1.$ To prove this results we use the original ideas of \cite{adiprasito2019theorems} for the Euclidean case and our slightly modified version of the celebrated Maurey lemma.
In this paper we prove an isoperimetric inequality of euclidean type for complete metric spaces admitting a cone-type inequality. These include all Banach spaces and all complete, simply-connected metric spaces of non-positive curvature in the sense of Alexandrov or, more generally, of Busemann. The main theorem generalizes results of Gromov and Ambrosio-Kirchheim.
Tube formulas (by which we mean an explicit formula for the volume of an $ε$-neighbourhood of a subset of a suitable metric space) have been used in many situations to study properties of the subset. For smooth submanifolds of Euclidean space, this includes Weyl's celebrated results on spectral asymptotics, and the subsequent relation between curvature and spectrum. Additionally, a tube formula contains information about the dimension and measurability of rough sets. In convex geometry, the tube formula of a convex subset of Euclidean space allows for the definition of certain curvature measur…
We investigate properties of quasihyperbolic balls and geodesics in Euclidean and Banach spaces. Our main result is that in uniformly smooth Banach spaces a quasihyperbolic ball of a convex domain is $C^1$-smooth. The question about the smoothness of quasihyperbolic balls is old, originating back to the discussions of F.W. Gehring and M. Vuorinen in 1970's. To our belief, the result is new also in the Euclidean setting. We also address some other issues involving the smoothness of quasihyperbolic balls. We introduce an interesting application of quasihyperbolic metrics to renormings of Banach …
We consider (locally) energy finite coordinates associated with a strongly local regular Dirichlet form on a metric measure space. We give coordinate formulas for substitutes of tangent spaces, for gradient and divergence operators and for the infinitesimal generator. As examples we discuss Euclidean spaces, Riemannian local charts, domains on the Heisenberg group and the measurable Riemannian geometry on the Sierpinski gasket.
For a fixed $K\gg 1$ and $n\in\mathbb{N}$, $n\gg 1$, we study metric spaces which admit embeddings with distortion $\le K$ into each $n$-dimensional Banach space. Classical examples include spaces embeddable into $\log n$-dimensional Euclidean spaces, and equilateral spaces. We prove that good embeddability properties are preserved under the operation of metric composition of metric spaces. In particular, we prove that any $n$-point ultrametric can be embedded with uniformly bounded distortion into any Banach space of dimension $\log n$. The main result of the paper is a new example of a famil…
We introduce an algorithm for a search of extremal fractal curves in large curve classes. It heavily uses SAT-solvers~ -- heuristic algorithms that find models for CNF boolean formulas. Our algorithm was implemented and applied to the search of fractal surjective curves $γ\colon[0,1]\to[0,1]^d$ with minimal dilation $$ \sup_{t_1<t_2}\frac{\|γ(t_2)-γ(t_1)\|^d}{t_2-t_1}. $$ We report new results of that search in the case of Euclidean norm. We have found a new curve that we call "YE", a self-similar (monofractal) plane curve of genus $5\times 5$ with dilation $5\frac{43}{73}=5.5890\ldots$. In di…
We try to create a wise definition of 'angle spaces'. Based on an idea of Ivan Singer, we introduce a new concept of an angle in real Banach spaces, which generalizes the euclidean angle in Hilbert spaces. With this angle it is shown that in every two-dimensional subspace of a real Banach space we can describe elements uniquely by polar coordinates.
There are many problems and configurations in Euclidean geometry that were never extended to the framework of (normed or) finite dimensional real Banach spaces, although their original versions are inspiring for this type of generalization, and the analogous definitions for normed spaces represent a promising topic. An example is the geometry of simplices in non-Euclidean normed spaces. We present new generalizations of well known properties of Euclidean simplices. These results refer to analogues of circumcenters, Euler lines, and Feuerbach spheres of simplices in normed spaces. Using duality…
We generalize Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu's asymptotic formula for fractional Sobolev functions, in the setting of abstract metric measure spaces, under the assumption that at almost every point the tangent space in the measured Gromov-Hausdorff sense is a finite dimensional Banach space or a Carnot group. Our result not only covers the known results concerning Euclidean spaces, weighted Riemannian manifolds and finite dimensional Banach spaces, but also extends Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu's formula to $\rcdkn$ spaces and sub-Riemannian manifolds.
The modern study of singular integral operators on curves in the plane began in the 1970's. Since then, there has been a vast array of work done on the boundedness of singular integral operators defined on lower dimensional sets in Euclidean spaces. In recent years, mathematicians have attempted to push these results into a more general metric setting particularly in the case of singular integral operators defined on curves and graphs in Carnot groups. Suppose $X = Y^*$ for a separable Banach space $Y$. Any separable metric space can be isometrically embedded in such a Banach space via the Kur…
The point-to-set principle of J. Lutz and N. Lutz (2018) has recently enabled the theory of computing to be used to answer open questions about fractal geometry in Euclidean spaces $\mathbb{R}^n$. These are classical questions, meaning that their statements do not involve computation or related aspects of logic. In this paper we extend the reach of the point-to-set principle from Euclidean spaces to arbitrary separable metric spaces $X$. We first extend two fractal dimensions--computability-theoretic versions of classical Hausdorff and packing dimensions that assign dimensions $\dim(x)$ and $\…
