We have fabricated Ce/Pd bilayers grown on the SiO$_2$ substrate by magnetron sputtering under ultrahigh vacuum. Usage of palladium layer on top of the Ce film appears to prevent effectively the sample oxidation. The thickness of the cerium films is between 10 - 200 nm and 10 nm-thick palladium overlayers are always used. We have performed $in - situ$ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy on the as-deposited films and $ex - situ$ electrical resistivity measurements and XRD characterization. XPS confirms a very good quality of the samples. The analysis of the Ce $3d$ spectrum suggests that the $f$ states of Ce are on the border between the fluctuating valence and localization. The resistivity measurements reveal a competition of the Kondo scattering, semiconducting and metallic behaviors as well as the influence of the dimensional effect.
Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy is used for a detailed study of the electronic structure of the topological insulator Bi2Se3. Nominally stoichiometric and calcium-doped samples were investigated. The pristine surface shows the topological surface state in the bulk band gap. As time passes, the Dirac point moves to higher binding energies, indicating an increasingly strong downward bending of the bands near the surface. This time-dependent band bending is related to a contamination of the surface and can be accelerated by intentionally exposing the surface to carbon monoxide and other…
The local electronic and atomic structures of the high-quality single crystal of SrFeO3-{delta} ({delta}~0.19) were studied using temperature-dependent x-ray absorption and valence-band photoemission spectroscopy (VB-PES) to investigate the origin of anisotropic resistivity in the ab-plane and along the c-axis close to the region of thermal hysteresis (near temperature for susceptibility maximum, Tm~78 K). All experiments herein were conducted during warming and cooling processes. The Fe L3,2-edge X-ray linear dichrois results show that during cooling from room temperature to below the transit…
We investigate the electronic structure of high-quality single-crystal LaNiO$_3$ (LNO) thin films using in situ photoemission spectroscopy (PES). The in situ high-resolution soft x-ray PES measurements on epitaxial thin films reveal the intrinsic electronic structure of LNO. We find a new sharp feature in the PES spectra crossing the Fermi level, which is derived from the correlated Ni 3$d$ $e_g$ electrons. This feature shows significant enhancement of spectral weight with decreasing temperature. From a detailed analysis of resistivity data, the enhancement of spectral weight is attributed to …
SmO thin film is a new Kondo system showing a resistivity upturn around 10 K and was theoretically proposed to have a topologically nontrivial band structure. We have performed hard x-ray and soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy to elucidate the electronic structure of SmO. From the Sm 3$d$ core-level spectra, we have estimated the valence of Sm to be $\sim$2.96, proving that the Sm has a mixed valence. The valence-band photoemission spectra exhibit a clear Fermi edge originating from the Sm 5$d$-derived band. The present finding is consistent with the theory suggesting a possible topological…
We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study on untwinned PrBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$, which has low resistivity but does not show superconductivity. We have observed a dispersive feature with a band maximum around ($π$/2,$π$/2), indicating that this band is derived from the undoped CuO$_2$ plane. We have observed another dispersive band exhibiting one-dimensional character, which we attribute to signals from the doped CuO$_3$ chain. The overall band dispersion of the one-dimensional band agrees with the prediction of $t-J$ model calculation with parameters relevant to cuprates except that …
The electrical resistivity including the Kondo resistivity increase at low temperature is calculated for thin films of dilute magnetic alloys. Assuming that in the non-magnetic host the spin-orbit interaction is strong like in Au and Cu, the magnetic impurities have a surface anisotropy calculated in part I. That anisotropy hinders the motion of the spin. Including that anisotropy the effective electron-impurity coupling is calculated by using the second order renormalization group equations. The amplitude of the Kondo resistivity contribution is reduced as the position of the impurity approac…
We present a comprehensive angle-resolved photoemission study of the three-dimensional electronic structure of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. The wide range of dopings covered by this study, x=0 to x=0.3, allows to extract systematic features of the electronic structure. We show that there are three different hole pockets around the G point, the two inner ones being nearly degenerate and rather two dimensional, the outer one presenting a strong three dimensional character. The structure of the electron pockets is clarified by studying high doping contents, where they are enlarged. They are found to be esse…
The nematic state of the iron-based superconductors is studied in the undoped limit of the three-orbital ($xz$, $yz$, $xy$) spin-fermion model via the introduction of lattice degrees of freedom. Monte Carlo simulations show that in order to stabilize the experimentally observed lattice distortion and nematic order, and to reproduce photoemission experiments, {\it both} the spin-lattice and orbital-lattice couplings are needed. The interplay between their respective coupling strengths regulates the separation between the structural and Néel transition temperatures. Experimental results for the …
The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity of the heterostructures consisting of single crystalline LaMnO$_3$ samples with different crystallographic orientations covered by the epitaxial ferroelectric Ba$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$TiO$_3$ film has been studied. Results obtained for the heterostructure have been compared with the electrical resistivity of the single crystalline LaMnO$_3$ without the film. It was found that for the samples with the films where the polarization axis is perpendicular to the crystal surface the electrical resistivity strongly decreases, and at the temperature …
We investigate the unusual phase transitions in SrRuO$_{3}$ and Sr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$Ru$_{1-x}$Cr$_{x}$O$_{3}$ (x=0,0.05 and 0.1) employing x-ray diffraction, resistivity, magnetic studies and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. Our results show the compounds undergo crossover from $itinerant$ ferromagnetism to $localised$ ferromagnetism. The combined studies suggests Ru and Cr to be in 4+ valence state. A Griffith phase and an enhancement in Curie temperature (Tc) from 38 K to 107 K is observed with Cr doping. A shift in the chemical potential towards the valence band is observed with Cr doping.…
We investigated CeNi9In2 compound, which has been considered as a mixed valence (MV) system. Electrical resistivity vs. temperature variation was analysed in terms of the model proposed by Freimuth for systems with unstable 4f shell. At low temperature the resistivity dependence is consistent with a Fermi liquid state with a contribution characteristic of electron-phonon interaction. Ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) studies of the valence band did not reveal a Kondo peak down to 14 K. A difference of the spectra obtained with photon energies of low and high photoionization cross se…
Systematic measurements of temperature dependent magnetization, resistivity and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) at ambient pressure as well as resistivity under pressures up to 5.25 GPa were conducted on single crystals of CrAuTe$_4$. Magnetization data suggest that magnetic moments are aligned antiferromagnetically along the crystallographic $c$-axis below $T_\textrm{N}$ = 255 K. ARPES measurements show band reconstruction due to the magnetic ordering. Magnetoresistance data show clear anisotropy, and, at high fields, quantum oscillations. The Neel temperature decreases mono…
We report a layered ternary selenide BaPt4Se6 featuring sesqui-selenide Pt2Se3 layers sandwiched by Ba atoms. The Pt2Se3 layers in this compound can be derived from the Dirac-semimetal PtSe2 phase with Se vacancies that form a honeycomb structure. This structure results in a Pt (VI) and Pt (II) mixed-valence compound with both PtSe6 octahedra and PtSe4 square net coordination configurations. Temperature dependent electrical transport measurements suggest two distinct anomalies: a resistivity crossover, mimic to the metal-insulator (M-I) transition at ~150K, and a resistivity plateau at tempera…
Resistivity, optical, and angle-resolved photoemission experiments reveal unusual one-dimensional electronic properties of highly anisotropic SrNbO$_{3.41}$. Along the conducting chain direction we find an extremely small energy gap of only a few meV at the Fermi level. A discussion in terms of typical 1D instabilities (Peierls, Mott-Hubbard) shows that neither seems to provide a satisfactory explanation for the unique properties of SrNbO$_{3.41}$.
Recent experimental results: (i) the measurement of the $T \ln T$ specific heat in cuprates and the earlier such results in some heavy fermion compounds, (ii) the measurement of the single-particle scattering rates, (iii) the density fluctuation spectrum in cuprates and (iv) the long standing results on the linear temperature dependence of the resistivity, show that a theory of the quantum-criticality in these compounds based on the solution of the dissipative 2D - XY model gives the temperature and frequency dependence of each of them, and the magnitudes of all four with one dimensionless cou…
We study the structural, magnetic, transport and electronic properties of LaCoO$_3$ with Sr/Nb co-substitution, i.e., La$_{(1-2x)}$Sr$_{2x}$Co$_{(1-x)}$Nb$_{x}$O$_3$ using x-ray and neutron diffraction, dc and ac-magnetization, neutron depolarization, dc-resistivity and photoemission measurements. The powder x-ray and neutron diffraction data were fitted well with the rhombohedral crystal symmetry (space group \textit{R$\bar{3}$c}) in Rietveld refinement analysis. The calculated effective magnetic moment ($\approx$3.85~$μ_B$) and average spin ($\approx$1.5) of Co ions from the analysis of magn…
We have investigated the evolution of the electronic properties of La1-xSrxCrO3 (for the full range of x) epitaxial films deposited by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) using x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, electrical transport, and ab initio modeling. LaCrO3 is an antiferromagnetic insulator whereas SrCrO3 is a metal. Substituting Sr2+ for La3+ in LaCrO3 effectively dopes holes into the top of valence band, leading to Cr4+ (3d2) local electron configurations. Core-level and valence-band features monotonical…
The effect of Cr substitution in a SrRuO3 epitaxial thin film on SrTiO3 substrate was investigated by measuring the magnetic and transport properties and the electronic states. The ferromagnetic transition temperature of the SrRu0.9Cr0.1O3 film (166 K) was higher than that of the SrRuO3 film (147 K). Resonant photoemission spectroscopy experimentally revealed that the Cr 3dt2g orbital is hybridized with the Ru 4dt2g orbital in the SrRu0.9Cr0.1O3 film, supporting the assumption that the enhancement of the ferromagnetic transition temperature through Cr substitution stems from the widening of en…
