A new phase V of hydrogen was recently claimed in experiments above 325 GPa and 300 K. Due to the extremely small sample size at such record pressures the measurements were limited to Raman spectroscopy. The experimental data on increase of pressure shows decreasing Raman activity and darkening of the sample, which suggests band-gap closure and impending molecular dissociation, but no definite conclusions could be reached. Furthermore, the available data is insufficient to determine the structure of phase V, which remains unknown. Introducing saddle-point $ab$ $initio$ random structure searching (sp-AIRSS), we find several new structural candidates of hydrogen which could describe the observed properties of phase V. We investigate hydrogen metallisation in the proposed candidate structures, and demonstrate that smaller band gaps are associated with longer bond lengths. We conclude that phase V is a stepping stone towards metallisation.
More than 20 crystalline and amorphous phases have been reported for ice so far. This extraordinary polymorphism of ice arises from the geometric flexibility of hydrogen bonds and hydrogen ordering, and makes ice a unique presence with its universality in the wide fields of material and earth and planetary science. A prominent unsolved question concerning the diversity is whether a hydrogen-disordered phase of ice transforms into only one hydrogen-ordered phase, as inferred from the current phase diagram of ice, although its possible hydrogen configurations have close energies. Recent experime…
Two new phases of hydrogen have been discovered at room temperature in Ref.1: phase IV above 220 GPa and phase V above ~270 GPa. In the present work we have found a new phase VI at P~360 GPa and T<200 K. This phase is likely metallic as follows from the featureless Raman spectra, a strong drop in resistance, and absence of a photoconductive response. We studied hydrogen at low temperatures with the aid of Raman, infrared absorption, and electrical measurements at pressures up to 380 GPa, and have built a new phase diagram of hydrogen.
Finding a suitable material for hydrogen storage at ambient atmospheric conditions is challenging for material scientists and chemists. In this work, using a first principles based cluster expansion approach, the hydrogen storage capacity of Ti2AC (A = Al,Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) MAX phase and its alloys were studied. We found that hydrogen is energetically stable in Ti-A layers in which the tetrahedral site consisting of one A atom and three Ti atoms is energetically more favorable for hydrogen adsorption than other sites in the Ti-A layer. Ti2CuC has the highest hydrogen adsorptio…
We performed Raman and infrared (IR) spectroscopy measurements of hydrogen at 295 K up to 280 GPa at an IR synchrotron facility of SSRF. To reach the highest pressure, hydrogen was loaded into toroidal diamond anvils with 40 micrometers central culet. The intermolecular coupling has been determined by concomitant measurements of the IR and Raman vibron modes. In phase IV, we find that the intermolecular coupling is much stronger in the graphene (G) like layer of elongated molecules compared to the Br2 like layer of shortened molecules and it increases with pressure much faster in the G layer c…
In recent years there has been intense experimental activity to observe solid metallic hydrogen. Wigner and Huntington predicted that under extreme pressures insulating molecular hydrogen would dissociate and transition to atomic metallic hydrogen. Recently Dalladay-Simpson, Howie, and Gregoryanz reported a phase transition to an insulating phase in molecular hydrogen at a pressure of 325 GPa and 300 K. Because of its scientific importance we have scrutinized their experimental evidence to determine if their claim is justified. Based on our analysis, we conclude that they have misinterpreted t…
Liquid-liquid phase transition of hydrogen is at the center of hydrogen phase diagram as a promising route towards emergent properties such as the Wigner-Huntington metallization, superconductivity, and superfluidity. Here we report a study on the liquid-liquid phase transition of hydrogen using the state-of-the-art diffusion quantum Monte Carlo and density functional theory calculations. Our results suggest that the metallization process happens at lower pressures and temperatures compared to the structural phase transition of molecular to atomic hydrogen. The consequence is that metallized m…
We report modulation of a reversible phase transition in VO2 films by hydrogen doping. A metallic phase and a new insulating phase are successively observed at room temperature as the doping concentration increases. It is suggested that the polarized charges from doped hydrogens play an important role. These charges gradually occupy V3d-O2p hybridized orbitals and consequently modulate the filling of the VO2 crystal conduction band-edge states, which eventually evolve into new valence band-edge states. This demonstrates the exceptional sensitivity of VO2 electronic properties to electron conce…
We present a new theoretical and numerical phase field-based formulation for predicting hydrogen-assisted fatigue. The coupled deformation-diffusion-damage model presented enables predicting fatigue crack nucleation and growth for arbitrary loading patterns and specimen geometries. The role of hydrogen in increasing fatigue crack growth rates and decreasing the number of cycles to failure is investigated. Our numerical experiments enable mapping the three loading frequency regimes and naturally recover Paris law behaviour for various hydrogen concentrations. In addition, Virtual S-N curves are…
We present a new mechanistic, phase field-based formulation for predicting hydrogen embrittlement. The multi-physics model developed incorporates, for the first time, a Taylor-based dislocation model to resolve the mechanics of crack tip deformation. This enables capturing the role of dislocation hardening mechanisms in elevating the tensile stress, hydrogen concentration and dislocation trap density within tens of microns ahead of the crack tip. The constitutive strain gradient plasticity model employed is coupled to a phase field formulation, to simulate the fracture process, and to a multi-…
