Spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice with repulsive nearest-neighbor interactions are known to harbour a quantum critical point at half-filling, with critical behaviour in the Gross-Neveu (chiral Ising) universality class. The critical interaction strength separates a weak-coupling semimetallic regime from a commensurate charge-density-wave phase. The phase diagram of this basic model of correlated fermions on the honeycomb lattice beyond half-filling is, however, less well established. Here, we perform an analysis of its many-body instabilities using the functional renormalization group method with a basic Fermi surface patching scheme, which allows us to treat instabilities in competing channels on equal footing also away from half-filling. Between half-filling and the van-Hove filling, the free Fermi surface is hole-like and we again find a charge-density wave instability to be dominant at large interactions. Moreover, its characteristics are those of the half-filled case. Directly at the van-Hove filling the nesting property of the free Fermi surface stabilizes a dimerized bond-order phase. At lower filling the free Fermi surface becomes electron-like and a superconducting instability with $f$-wave symmetry is found to emerge from the interplay of intra-unitcell repulsion and collective fluctuations in the proximity to the charge-density wave instability. We estimate the extent of the various phases and extract the corresponding order parameters from the effective low-energy Hamiltonians.
We investigate the quantum many-body instabilities of the extended Hubbard model for spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice with repulsive nearest-neighbor and 2nd nearest-neighbor density-density interactions. Recent exact diagonalization and infinite density matrix renormalization group results suggest that a putative topological Mott insulator phase driven by the 2nd nearest-neighbor repulsion is suppressed, while other numerically exact approaches support the topological Mott insulator scenario. In the present work, we employ the functional renormalization group (fRG) for correlated fe…
Motivated by the surge in research activities on graphene, we investigate instabilities of electrons on the honeycomb lattice, interacting by onsite and nearest-neighbor terms, using a renormalization group scheme. Near half band-filling, critical minimal interaction strengths are required for instabilities toward antiferromagnetic or charge-density wave order. Away from half filling, f-wave triplet pairing and d+id singlet pairing instabilities are found to emerge out of density-wave regimes.
In a recent letter [D. Poletti et al., EPL 93, 37008 (2011)] a model of attractive spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice at half filling has been studied by mean-field theory, where distinct homogenous phases at rather large attraction strength $V>3.36$, separated by (topological) phase transitions, have been predicted. In this comment we argue that without additional interactions the ground states in these phases are not stable against phase separation. We determine the onset of phase separation at half filling $V_{ps}\approx 1.7$ by means of infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPE…
Fermions hopping on a hexagonal lattice represent one of the most active research field in condensed matter since the discovery of graphene in 2004 and its numerous applications. Another exciting aspect of the interplay between geometry and quantum mechanical effects is given by the Haldane model (F. D. M. Haldane, Phys. Rev. Lett. 61, 2015 (1988)) where spinless fermions experiencing a certain flux pattern on the honeycomb lattice leads to the stabilization of a topological phase of matter, distinct from a Mott insulator and dubbed Chern insulator nowadays. In this context, it is crucial to u…
We use exact diagonalization and cluster perturbation theory to address the role of strong interactions and quantum fluctuations for spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice. We find quantum fluctuations to be very pronounced both at weak and strong interactions. A weak second-neighbor Coulomb repulsion $V_2$ induces a tendency toward an interaction-generated quantum anomalous Hall phase, as borne out in mean-field theory. However, quantum fluctuations prevent the formation of a stable quantum Hall phase before the onset of the charge-modulated phase predicted at large $V_2$ by mean-field th…
We present a functional renormalization group investigation of an Euclidean three-dimensional matrix Yukawa model with U(N) symmetry, which describes N = 2 Weyl fermions that effectively interact via a short-range repulsive interaction. This system relates to an effective low-energy theory of spinless electrons on the honeycomb lattice and can be seen as a simple model for suspended graphene. We find a continuous phase transition characterized by large anomalous dimensions for the fermions and composite degrees of freedom. The critical exponents define a new universality class distinct from Gr…
Spinless fermions on a honeycomb lattice provide a minimal realization of lattice Dirac fermions. Repulsive interactions between nearest neighbors drive a quantum phase transition from a Dirac semimetal to a charge-density-wave state through a fermionic quantum critical point, where the coupling of Ising order parameter to the Dirac fermions at low energy drastically affects the quantum critical behavior. Encouraged by a recently discovery of absence of the fermion sign problem in this model, we study the fermionic quantum critical point using the continuous time quantum Monte Carlo method wit…
Proposals for superconductivity emerging from correlated electrons in the doped Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice range from chiral $d+id$ singlet to $p+ip$ triplet pairing, depending on the considered range of doping and interaction strength, as well as the approach used to analyze the pairing instabilities. Here, we consider these scenarios using large-scale dynamic cluster approximation (DCA) calculations to examine the evolution in the leading pairing symmetry from weak to intermediate coupling strength. These calculations focus on doping levels around the van Hove singularity (VHS) a…
We study the possible superconducting pairing symmetry mediated by spin and charge fluctuations on the honeycomb lattice using the extended Hubbard model and the random-phase-approximation method. From $2\%$ to $20\%$ doping levels, a spin-singlet $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}+id_{xy}$-wave is shown to be the leading superconducting pairing symmetry when only the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$ is considered, with the gap function being a mixture of the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor pairings. When the offset of the energy level between the two sublattices exceeds a critical value, the most fav…
We study competing orders of spinless fermions in the triangular-lattice Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor interaction. We calculate the effective, momentum-resolved two-particle vertex in an unbiased way in terms of the functional renormalization group method and compare two different schemes for the momentum discretization, one based on dividing the Fermi surface into patches and one based on a channel decomposition. We study attractive and repulsive nearest-neighbor interaction and find a competition of pairing and charge instabilities. In the attractive case, a Pomeranchuk instability oc…
Using finite-temperature determinantal quantum Monte Carlo calculations, we re-examine the pairing susceptibilities in the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice, focusing on doping levels onto and away from the van Hove singularity (VHS) filling. For this purpose, electronic densities of $0.75$ (at the hole-doping VHS) and $0.4$ (well below the VHS) are considered in detail, where due to a severe sign problem at strong coupling strengths, we focus on the weak interaction region of the Hubbard model Hamiltonian. From analyzing the temperature dependence of pairing susceptibilities in various s…
Motivated by recent developments in the experimental study of superconducting graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides, we investigate superconductivity of the Kane-Mele (KM) model with short-range attractive interactions on the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. We show that intra-valley spin-triplet pairing arises from nearest-neighbor (NN) attractive interaction and the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. We demonstrate this in two independent approaches: We study superconducting instability driven by condensation of Cooperons, which are in-gap bound states of two conduction electrons, with…
A gas of strongly interacting spinless p-orbital fermionic atoms in 2D optical lattices is proposed and studied. Several interesting new features are found. In the Mott limit on a square lattice, the gas is found to be described effectively by an orbital exchange Hamiltonian equivalent to a pseudospin-1/2 XXZ model. For a triangular, honeycomb, or Kagome lattice, the orbital exchange is geometrically frustrated and described by a new quantum 120 degree model. We determine the orbital ordering on the Kagome lattice, and show how orbital wave fluctuations select ground states via the order by di…
We study the evolution of the pairing from weak to strong coupling on a honeycomb lattice by Quantum Monte Carlo. We show numerical evidence of the BCS-BEC crossover as the coupling strength increases on a honeycomb lattice with small fermi surface by measuring a wide range of observables: double occupancy, spin susceptibility, local pair correlation, and kinetic energy. Although at low energy, the model sustains Dirac fermions, we do not find significant qualitative difference in the BCS-BEC crossover as compared to those with an extended Fermi surface, except at weak coupling, BCS regime.
We investigate the phase diagram of spinless fermions with nearest and next-nearest neighbour density-density interactions on the honeycomb lattice at half-filling. Using Exact Diagonalization techniques of the full Hamiltonian and constrained subspaces, combined with a careful choice of finite-size clusters, we determine the different charge orderings that occur for large interactions. In this regime we find a two-sublattice Néel-like state, a charge modulated state with a tripling of the unit cell, a zig-zag phase and a novel charge ordered states with a 12 site unit cells we call Néel domai…
Motivated by recent experiments on atomic Dirac fermions in a tunable honeycomb optical lattice, we study the attractive Hubbard model of superfluidity in the anisotropic honeycomb lattice. At weak-coupling, we find that the maximum mean field pairing transition temperature, as a function of density and interaction strength, occurs for the case with isotropic hopping amplitudes. In this isotropic case, we go beyond mean field theory and study collective fluctuations, treating both pairing and density fluctuations for interaction strengths ranging from weak to strong coupling. We find evidence …
Motivated by experiments on twisted bilayer graphene, we study the emergence of superconductivity from $\textit{weak}$ repulsive interactions in the Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, with both spin and orbital degeneracies, and with the filling treated as a tunable control parameter. The attraction is generated through the Kohn-Luttinger mechanism. We find, similar to old studies of single layer graphene, that the leading superconducting instability is in a $d$-wave pairing channel close to Van Hove filling, and is in an $f$-wave pairing channel away from Van Hove filling. The $d$-wave pai…
We investigate phases of spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice with nearest neighbor interaction in the Hofstadter regime. The interaction induces incompressible nematic and ferri-electric phases with broken translation symmetry. Some of the transitions are accompanied by changes in the Hall conductivity. We study pair correlations and show that the quantum metric, averaged over the Brillouin zone, characterizes the shape of the pair correlation function.
We predict two topological superconducting phases in microscopic models arising from the Berry phase associated with the valley degree of freedom in gapped Dirac honeycomb systems. The first one is a topological helical spin-triplet superconductor with a nonzero center-of-mass momentum that does not break time-reversal symmetry. We also find a topological chiral-triplet superconductor with Chern number $\pm 1$ with equal-spin-pairing in one valley and opposite-spin-triplet pairing in the other valley. Our results are obtained for the Kane-Mele model in which we have explored the effect of thre…
A microscopic theory of the electronic spectrum and of superconductivity within the t-J model on the honeycomb lattice is developed. We derive the equations for the normal and anomalous Green functions in terms of the Hubbard operators by applying the projection technique. Superconducting pairing of d + id'-type mediated by the antiferromagnetic exchange is found. The superconducting Tc as a function of hole doping exhibits a two-peak structure related to the van Hove singularities of the density of states for the two-band t-J model. At half-filling and for large enough values of the exchange …
We study the two-band model of spinless fermions in one dimension for weak repulsive interactions. In this case, the model is equivalent to the weakly interacting spinless two-leg ladder. We obtain analytic expressions for the superconducting pairing correlation function and the charge density correlation function, which show, that a finite interchain hopping t_p results in dominant superconductivity for repulsive interactions (for vanishing t_p, we recover previous results). We furthermore find that the transition from the superconducting phase to the usual one-dimensional (Luttinger) metal a…
We investigate the phase diagrams of a one-dimensional lattice model of fermions and of a spin chain with interactions extending up to next-nearest neighbour range. In particular, we investigate the appearance of regions with dominant pairing physics in the presence of nearest-neighbour and next-nearest-neighbour interactions. Our analysis is based on analytical calculations in the classical limit, bosonization techniques and large-scale density-matrix renormalization group numerical simulations. The phase diagram, which is investigated in all relevant filling regimes, displays a remarkably ri…

Motivated by the recent numerical simulations for doped $t$-$J$ model on the honeycomb lattice, we study superconductivity of singlet and triplet pairing on the honeycomb lattice Hubbard model. We show that a superconducting state with coexisting spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairings is induced by the antiferromagnetic order near half filling. The superconducting state we obtain has a topological phase transition that separates a topologically trivial state and a nontrivial state with Chern number two. Possible experimental realization of such a topological superconductivity is also discussed…
Spin-triplet superconductivity is actively pursued in condensed matter physics due to the potential applications in topological quantum computations. The related pairing mechanism involving the interaction remains an important research topic. Here we propose a universal approach to obtain p-wave triplet superconductivity in the Hubbard models by simply changing the sign of the hopping amplitudes of the spin-down electrons, and apply it to three prototype two-dimensional lattices (honeycomb, square, and triangular). The parent Hamiltonian at half filling has long-range magnetic order, which is …
We investigate the twisted bilayer graphene by a two-orbital Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice. The model is studied near 1/4 band filling by using the singular-mode functional renormalization group theory. Spin-triplet $f$-wave pairing is found from weak to moderate coupling limit of the local interactions, and is associated with the Hund's rule coupling and incommensurate spin fluctuations at moderate momenta.
To address the issue of electron correlation driven superconductivity in graphene, we perform a systematic quantum Monte Carlo study of the pairing correlation in the t-U-V Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice. For V=0 and close to half filling, we find that pairing with d+id symmetry dominates pairing with extended-s symmetry. However, as the system size or the on-site Coulomb interaction increases, the long-range part of the d+id pairing correlation decreases and tends to vanish in the thermodynamic limit. An inclusion of nearest-neighbor interaction V, either repulsive or attractive, has a …
An analysis of the stability of topological states induced by Coulomb repulsion on decorated honeycomb lattices is presented. Based on a mean-field treatment of a spinless extended Hubbard model on the decorated honeycomb lattice we show how the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) phase is a robust topological phase which emerges at various electron fillings and involves either quadratic band crossing points (QBCP) or Dirac points of the bands. The topological QAH phase is also found to be most stable against thermal fluctuations up to moderate temperatures when the Coulomb repulsion is maximally fru…
The emergence of the Haldane Chern insulator state due to strong short range repulsive interactions in the half-filled fermionic spinless honeycomb lattice model has been proposed and challenged with different methods and yet it still remains controversial. In this work we revisit the problem using the infinite density matrix renormalization group method and report numerical evidence supporting i) the absence of the Chern insulator state, ii) two previously unnoticed charge ordered phases and iii) the existence and stability of all the non-topological competing orders that were found previousl…
We study the spinless and spinful extended Hubbard models with repulsive interactions on the kagome and the decorated honeycomb ("star") lattice. Using Hartree-Fock mean-field theory, we show that interaction-driven insulating phases with non-trivial topological invariants (Chern number or $Z_2$ invariant) exist for an experimentally reasonable range of parameters. These phases occur at filling fractions which involve either Dirac points or quadratic band crossing points in the non-interacting limit. We present comprehensive mean-field phase diagrams for these lattices and discuss the competit…
Spin liquids are novel states of matter with fractionalized excitations. A recent numerical study of Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice\cite{Meng2010} indicates that a gapped spin liquid phase exists close to the Mott transition. Using Projective Symmetry Group, we classify all the possible spin liquid states by Schwinger fermion mean-field approach. We find there is only one fully gapped spin liquid candidate state: "Sublattice Pairing State" that can be realized up to the 3rd neighbor mean-field amplitudes, and is in the neighborhood of the Mott transition. We propose this state as the spi…
Topological phases typically encode topology at the level of the single particle band structure. But a remarkable class of models shows that quantum anomalous Hall effects can be driven exclusively by interactions, while the parent non-interacting band structure is topologically trivial. Unfortunately, these models have so far relied on interactions that do not spatially decay and are therefore unphysical. We study a model of spinless fermions on a decorated honeycomb lattice. Using complementary methods, mean-field theory and exact diagonalization, we find a robust quantum anomalous Hall phas…
Using the low-energy effective field theory for hole-doped antiferromagnets on the honeycomb lattice, we study the localization of holes on Skyrmions, as a potential mechanism for the preformation of Cooper pairs. In contrast to the square lattice case, for the standard radial profile of the Skyrmion on the honeycomb lattice, only holes residing in one of the two hole pockets can get localized. This differs qualitatively from hole pairs bound by magnon exchange, which is most attractive between holes residing in different momentum space pockets. On the honeycomb lattice, magnon exchange unambi…
We investigate the properties of the nearest-neighbor singlet pairing and the emergence of d-wave superconductivity in the doped honeycomb lattice considering the limit of large interactions and the $t-J_1-J_2$ model. First, by applying a renormalized mean-field procedure as well as slave-boson theories which account for the proximity to the Mott insulating state, we confirm the emergence of d-wave superconductivity in agreement with earlier works. We show that a small but finite $J_2$ spin coupling between next-nearest neighbors stabilizes d-wave symmetry compared to the extended s-wave scena…
We study spontaneous symmetry breaking in a system of spinless fermions in the Honeycomb lattice paying special emphasis to the role of an enlarged unit cell on time reversal symmetry broken phases. We use a tight binding model with nearest neighbor hopping t and Hubbard interaction V1 and V2 and extract the phase diagram as a function of electron density and interaction within a mean field variational approach. The analysis completes the previous work done in Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 106402 (2011) where phases with non--trivial topological properties were found with only a nearest neighbor inter…
We propose that spin-fluctuation-mediated spin-triplet superconductivity may be realized in repulsive Hubbard models with disconnected Fermi surfaces. The idea is confirmed for Hubbard models on triangular (dilute band filling) and honeycomb (near half-filling) lattices using fluctuation exchange approximation, where triplet pairing order parameter with f-wave symmetry is obtained. Possible relevance to real superconductors is suggested.
Fermion systems with flat bands can boost superconductivity by enhancing the density of states at the Fermi level. We use quasiexact numerical methods to show that repulsive interactions between spinless fermions in a one-dimensional (1D) flat-band system, the Creutz ladder, give a finite pairing energy that increases with repulsion, though charge quasi-order (QO) remains dominant. Adding an attractive component shifts the balance in favor of superconductivity and the interplay of two flat bands further yields a remarkable enhancement of superconductivity, well outside of known paradigms for 1…
Spin-$1/2$ chains with alternating antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic couplings have attracted considerable interest due to the topological character of their spin excitations. Here, using density functional theory and density matrix renormalization group methods, we have systematically studied the dimerized chain system Na$_2$Cu$_2$TeO$_6$. Near the Fermi level, the dominant states are mainly contributed by the Cu $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals highly hybridized with the O $2p$ orbitals in the nonmagnetic phase, leading to an "effective" single-orbital low-energy model. Furthermore, the bandwidth o…
We study a generalized honeycomb lattice spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic 2-spin exchange, and competing 4-spin interactions which serve to stabilize a staggered dimer state which breaks lattice rotational symmetry. Using a combination of quantum Monte Carlo numerics, spin wave theory, and bond operator theory, we show that this model undergoes a strong first-order transition between a Neel state and a staggered dimer state upon increasing the strength of the 4-spin interactions. We attribute the strong first order character of this transition to the spinless n…
Motivated by recent experimental study of antiferromagnetic property of honeycomb compound In$_{3}$Cu$_{2}$VO$_{9}$ [Yan \textit{et al.}, PRB \textbf{85}, 085102 (2012)], we explore possible superconductivity and its coexistence with antiferromagnetism. We use the t-t$^\prime$-J model on the honeycomb lattice as our starting point and employ the slave-boson mean-field theory. In the antiferromagnetic normal state, the characteristic doping evolution of Fermi surface shows that only one effective singe band is active, which suggests that the potential pairing symmetry is the time-reversal symme…
We study the ground state of the doped Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice in the small doping and strongly interacting region. The nature of the ground state by doping holes into the anti-ferromagnetic Mott insulating states on the honeycomb lattice remains a long-standing unsolved issue, even though tremendous efforts have been spent to investigate this challenging problem. An accurate determination of the ground state in this system is crucial to understand the interplay between the topology of Fermi surface and strong correlation effect. In this work, we employ two complementary, state-…
By using the constrained-phase quantum Monte Carlo method, we performed a systematic study of the pairing correlations in the ground state of the doped Kane-Mele-Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice. We find that pairing correlations with $d+id$ symmetry dominate close to half filling, but pairing correlations with $p+ip$ symmetry dominate as hole doping moves the system below three-quarters filling. We correlate these behaviors of the pairing correlations with the topology of the Fermi surfaces of the non-interacting problem. We also find that the effective pairing correlation is enhanced gre…
We elucidate the close relationship between spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking and the physics of excitonic instabilities in strongly correlated multiband systems. The underlying mechanism responsible for the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry in a many-body system is closely related to the Cooper-like pairing instability of interband particle-hole pairs involving higher order symmetries. Studies of such pairing instabilites have, however, mainly focused on the mean-field aspects of the virtual exciton condensate, which ignores the presence of the underlying collective Fer…
The search for topological superconductors is one of the most pressing and challenging questions in condensed matter and material research. Despite some early suggestions that doping a topological insulator might be a successful recipe to find topological superconductors, until today there is no general understanding of the relationship of the topology of the superconductor and the topology of its underlying normal state system. One of the major obstacles is the strong effect of the Fermi surface and its subsequent pairing tendencies within the Hubbard model framework, usually preventing a det…
We propose a mixed-geometry system of fermionic species selectively confined in lattices of different geometry. We investigate how such asymmetry can lead to exotic multiband fermion pairing in an example system of honeycomb and triangular lattices. A rich phase diagram of interband pairing with gapped and gapless excitations is found at zero temperature. We find that the two-band contribution of the honeycomb lattices to the paired state helps to stabilize the gapless phase with one or two Fermi surfaces. We also show that the Fermi surface topology further divides the gapless phase into subc…
A microscopic theory of electronic spectrum and superconductivity within the $t$-$J$ model on the honeycomb lattice is formulated. The Dyson equation for the normal and anomalous Green functions for the two-band model in terms of the Hubbard operators is derived by applying the Mori-type projection technique. The self-energy is evaluated in the self-consistent Born approximation for electron scattering on spin and charge fluctuations induced by the kinematical interaction for the Hubbard operators. Superconducting pairing mediated by the antiferromagnetic exchange and spin fluctuations is disc…
Interacting fermions on the half-filled honeycomb lattice with short-range repulsions have been suggested to host a variety of interesting many-body ground states, e.g., a topological Mott insulator. A number of recent studies of the spinless case in terms of exact diagonalization, the infinite density matrix renormalization group and the functional renormalization group, however, indicate a suppression of the topological Mott insulating phase in the whole range of interaction parameters. Here, we complement the previous studies by investigating the quantum many-body instabilities of the physi…
We use a projective symmetry group analysis to determine all symmetric spin liquids on the stuffed honeycomb lattice Heisenberg model. This lattice interpolates between honeycomb, triangular and dice lattices, always preserving hexagonal symmetry, and it already has one spin liquid candidate, TbInO$_3$, albeit with strong spin-orbit coupling not considered here. In addition to the stuffed honeycomb lattice itself, we gain valuable insight into potential spin liquids on the honeycomb and triangular lattices, as well as how they might be connected. For example, the sublattice pairing state propo…
We investigate the ordering instability of interacting (and for simplicity, spinless) fermions on graphene's honeycomb lattice by numerically computing the Hartree self-consistent solution for the charge-density-wave order parameter in presence of both uniform and non-uniform magnetic fields. For a uniform field the overall behavior of the order parameter is found to be in accord with the continuum theory. In the inhomogeneous case, the spatial profile of the order parameter resembles qualitatively the form of the magnetic field itself, at least when the interaction is not overly strong. We fi…
We construct a 1D model Hamiltonian of spinless fermions for which the spinless analogue of $η$-pairing states are quantum many-body scars of the model. These states are excited states and display subvolume entanglement entropy scaling; they form a tower of states that are equally spaced in energy (resulting in periodic oscillations in the Loschmidt echo and in the time evolution of observables for initial states prepared in a superposition of them) and are atypical in the sense that they weakly break the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, while the other excited states are thermal. We exte…
