Spin-orbit interactions are subwavelength phenomena which can potentially lead to numerous device related applications in nanophotonics. Here, we report Spin-Hall effect in the forward scattering of Hermite-Gaussian and Gaussian beams from a plasmonic nanowire. Asymmetric scattered radiation distribution was observed for circularly polarized beams. Asymmetry in the scattered radiation distribution changes the sign when the polarization handedness inverts. We found a significant enhancement in the Spin-Hall effect for Hermite-Gaussian beam as compared to Gaussian beam for constant input power. The difference between scattered powers perpendicular to the long axis of the plasmonic nanowire was used to quantify the enhancement. In addition to it, nodal line of HG beam acts as the marker for the Spin-Hall shift. Numerical calculations corroborate experimental observations and suggest that the Spin flow component of Poynting vector associated with the circular polarization is responsible for the Spin-Hall effect and its enhancement.
Quantum theory of surface plasmons is very important for studying the interactions between light and different metal nanostructures in nanoplasmonics. In this work, using the canonical quantization method, the SPPs on nanowires and their orbital and spin angular momentum are investigated. The results show that the SPPs on nanowire carry both orbital and spin momentum during propagation. Later, the result is applied on the plasmonic nanowire waveguide to show the agreement of the theory. The study is helpful for the nano wire based plasmonic interactions and the quantum information based optica…
We launch surface plasmons from one end of a silver nanowire by asymmetric illumination with white light and use plasmon-to-light scattering at the nanowire ends to probe spectroscopically the plasmonic Fabry-Perot wire modes. The spectral positions of the maxima and minima in the scattered intensity from both nanowire ends are found to be either in phase or out-of phase, depending on the nanowire length and the spectral range. This behavior can be explained by a generalized Fabry-Perot model. The turnover-point between the two regimes is sensitive to the surface plasmon round trip losses and …
Plasmonic Faraday rotation in nanowires manifests itself in the rotation of the spatial intensity distribution of high-order surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes around the nanowire axis. Here we predict theoretically the giant Faraday rotation for SPP propagating on graphene-coated magneto-optically active nanowires. Upon the reversal of the external magnetic field pointing along the nanowire axis some high-order plasmonic modes may be rotated by up to ~ 100 degrees on scale of about 500 nm at mid-infrared frequencies. Tuning carrier concentration in graphene by chemical doping or gate volta…
We develop a nonlocal-response generalization to the Green-function surface-integral method (GSIM), also known as the boundary-element method (BEM). This numerically light method can accurately describe the linear hydrodynamic nonlocal response of arbitrarily shaped plasmonic nanowires in arbitrary dielectric backgrounds. All previous general-purpose methods for nonlocal response are bulk methods. We also expand the possible geometries to which the usual local-response GSIM can be applied, by showing how to regularize singularities that occur in the surface integrals when the nanoparticles tou…
The optical response of a coupled nanowire dimer is studied using a fully quantum mechanical approach. The translational invariance of the system allows to apply the time--dependent density functional theory for the plasmonic dimer with the largest size considered so far in quantum calculations. Detailed comparisons with results from classical electromagnetic calculations based on local and non local hydrodynamic response, as well as with results of the recently developed quantum corrected model is performed. We show that electron tunneling and dynamical screening are the major nonlocal quantu…
Quantum dots optically excited in close proximity to a silver nanowire can launch nanowire surface plasmons. The challenge related to this promising hybrid system is to control the position of nanoemitters on the nanowire. We report on the use of two-photon photopolymerization process to strategically position quantum dots on nanowires at controlled sites. A parametric study of the distance between the quantum dots and the nanowire extremity shows that precise control of the position of the launching sites enables control of light intensity at the wire end, through surface plasmon propagation.
Hotspots of surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) are localized within 1 nm at gaps or crevices of plasmonic nanoparticle (NP) dimers. We demonstrate SERRS hotspots with volumes that are extended in one dimension tens of thousand times compared to standard zero-dimensional hotspots using gaps or crevices of plasmonic nanowire (NW) dimers.
Vertical nanowires facilitate an innovative mechanism to channel the optical field in the orthogonal direction and act as a nanoscale light source. Subwavelength, vertically oriented nanowire platforms, both of plasmonic and semiconducting variety can facilitate interesting far field emission profiles and potentially carry orbital angular momentum states. Motivated by these prospects, in this letter, we show how a hybrid plasmonic - organic platform can be harnessed to engineer far field radiation. The system that we have employed is an organic nanowire made of diaminoanthroquinone grown on a …
Metal nanoparticles are the most frequently used nanostructures in plasmonics. However, besides nanoparticles, metal nanowires feature several advantages for applications. Their elongation offers a larger interaction volume, their resonances can reach higher quality factors, and their mode structure provides better coupling into integrated hybrid dielectric-plasmonic circuits. It is crucial though, to control the distance of the wire to a supporting substrate, to another metal layer or to active materials with sub-nanometer precision. A dielectric coating can be utilized for distance control, …
We study the effect of nonlocal optical response on the optical properties of metallic nanowires, by numerically implementing the hydrodynamical Drude model for arbitrary nanowire geometries. We first demonstrate the accuracy of our frequency-domain finite-element implementation by benchmarking it in a wide frequency range against analytical results for the extinction cross section of a cylindrical plasmonic nanowire. Our main results concern more complex geometries, namely cylindrical and bow-tie nanowire dimers that can strongly enhance optical fields. For both types of dimers we find that n…
Metal nanowires and nanoparticles that facilitate surface plasmons are of contemporary interest in nanophotonics, thermoplasmonics and optoelectronics. They facilitate not only subwavelength light propagation and localization capabilities, but also provide an excellent platform for opto-thermal effects confined to volumes down to the nanoscale. This brief review article aims to provide an overview of a specific nanophotonic geometry: a plasmonic nanowire coupled to a zero-dimensional nanostructure. We discuss the methods to prepare such nano-architectures and review some interesting nanophoton…
The hydrodynamic Drude model known from metal plasmonics also applies to semiconductor structures of sizes in between single-particle quantum confinement and bulk. But contrary to metals, for semiconductors two or more types of plasma may have to be taken into account in order to properly describe their plasmonic properties. In this combined analytical and computational study, we explore predictions of the recently proposed two-fluid hydrodynamic Drude model for the optical properties of plasmonic semiconductor nanowires, in particular for thermally excited InSb nanowires. We focus on the low-…
We demonstrate that plasmonic helical gratings consisting of metallic nanowires imprinted with helical grooves or ridges can be used efficiently to generate plasmonic vortices with radius much smaller than the operating wavelength. In our proposed approach, these helical surface gratings are designed so that plasmon modes with different azimuthal quantum numbers (topological charge) are phase-matched, thus allowing one to generate optical plasmonic vortices with arbitrary topological charge. The general principles for designing plasmonic helical gratings that facilitate efficient generation of…
We compare the optical response of isolated nanowires, double-wire systems, and Pi-structures, and show that their radiation is well described in terms of their electric and magnetic dipole moments. We also show that both dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability can be negative at optical and near infrared frequencies, and demonstrate the connection between the geometry of the system and its resonance characteristics. We conclude that plasmonic nanowires can be employed for developing novel negative-index materials. Finally, we demonstrate that it is possible to construct a nanowire-b…
Influencing spectral and directional features of exciton emission characteristics from 2D transition metal dichalcogenides by coupling it to plasmonic nano-cavities has emerged as an important prospect in nanophotonics of 2D materials. In this paper we experimentally study the directional photoluminescence emission from Tungsten disulfide (WS2) monolayer sandwiched between a single-crystalline plasmonic silver nanowire (AgNW) waveguide and a gold (Au) mirror, thus forming an AgNW-WS2-Au cavity. By employing polarization-resolved Fourier plane optical microscopy, we quantify the directional emi…
We predict theoretically that stable subwavelength plasmonic lattice solitons (PLSs) are formed in arrays of metallic nanowires embedded in a nonlinear medium. The tight confinement of the guiding modes of the metallic nanowires, combined with the strong nonlinearity induced by the enhanced field at the metal surface, provide the main physical mechanisms for balancing the wave diffraction and the formation of PLSs. As the conditions required for the formation of PLSs are satisfied in a variety of plasmonic systems, we expect these nonlinear modes to have important applications to subwavelength…

Despite significant advances in their fundamental aspects, the integration within scalable photonic circuitry remains challenging. Here we report on the realization of hybrid photonic devices consisting of nanowire lasers integrated with wafer-scale lithographically designed V-groove plasmonic wa…
We present an analytical description of the nonlocal optical response of plasmonic nanowire metamaterials that enable negative refraction, subwavelength light manipulation, and emission lifetime engineering. We show that dispersion of optical waves propagating in nanowire media results from coupling of transverse and longitudinal electromagnetic modes supported by the composite and derive the nonlocal effective medium approximation for this dispersion. We derive the profiles of electric field across the unit cell, and use these expressions to solve the long-standing problem of additional bound…
We report on the deterministic coupling between single semiconducting nanowire quantum dots emitting in the visible and plasmonic Au nanoantennas. Both systems are separately carefully characterized through microphotoluminescence and cathodoluminescence. A two-step realignment process using cathodoluminescence allows for electron beam lithography of Au antennas near individual nanowire quantum dots with a precision of 50 nm. A complete set of optical properties are measured before and after antenna fabrication. They evidence both an increase of the NW absorption, and an improvement of the quan…
We report a new experimental technique for quantifying the angular distribution of light scattered by single plasmonic and metamaterial nanoscatterers, based on Fourier microscopy in a dark field confocal set up. This new set up is a necessary tool for quantifying the scattering properties of single plasmonic and meatamaterial building blocks, as well as small coupled clusters of such building blocks, which are expected to be the main ingredients of nano-antennas, light harvesting structures and transformation optics. We present a set of measurements on Au nanowires of different lengths and sh…
We experimentally show how a single Ag nanoparticle (NP) coupled to an Ag nanowire (NW) can convert propagating surface plasmon polaritons to directional photons. By employing dual-excitation Fourier microscopy with spatially filtered collection-optics, we show single- and dual-directional out-coupling of light from NW-NP junction for plasmons excited through glass-substrate and air-superstrate. Furthermore, we show NW-NP junction can influence the directionality of molecular-fluorescence emission, thus functioning as an optical antenna. The results discussed herein may have implications in re…
We demonstrate that the surface second-harmonic generation can lead to the formation of nonlinear plasmonic whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) in microcavities made of metallic nanowires. Since these WGMs are excited by induced surface nonlinear dipoles, they can be generated even when they are not coupled to the radiation continuum. Consequently, the quality factor of these nonlinear modes can be as large as the theoretical limit imposed by the optical losses in the metal. Remarkably, our theoretical analysis shows that nonlinear plasmonic WGMs are characterized by fractional azimuthal modal num…
Chemical synthesized silver nanowires have been proved to be the efficient architecture for Plasmonic waveguides, but the high propagation loss prevents their widely applications. Here, we demonstrate that the propagation distance of the plasmons along the Ag NW can be extended if the Ag NW was placed on a dielectric multilayer substrate containing a photonic band gap, but not placed on a commonly used glass substrate. The propagation distance at 630 nm wavelength can reach 16 um even that the Ag NW is as thin as 90 nm in diameter. Experimental and simulation results further show that the pola…
On-chip nanophotonics serves as the foundation for the new generation of information technology, but it is challenged by the diffraction limit of light. With the capabilities of confining light into (deep) subwavelength volumes, plasmonics makes it possible to dramatically miniaturize optical devices so as to integrate them into silicon chips. Here we demonstrate that by cascading nano-corrugation gratings with different periodicities on silver nanowires atop silicon, different colors can be spatially separated and chronologically released at different grating junctions. The released light fre…
Plasmonic circuitry is considered as a promising solution-effective technology for miniaturizing and integrating the next generation of optical nano-devices. A key element is the shared metal network between electrical and optical information enabling an efficient hetero-integration of an electronic control layer and a plasmonic data link. Here, we investigate to what extend surface plasmons and current-carrying electrons interfere in such a shared circuitry. By synchronously recording surface plasmon propagation and electrical output characteristics of single chemically-synthesized silver nan…
We report on the experimental observation of beaming elastic and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) emission from a bent-nanowire on a mirror (B-NWoM) cavity. The system was probed with polarization resolved Fourier plane and energy-momentum imaging to study the spectral and angular signature of the emission wavevectors. The out-coupled elastically scattered light from the kink occupies a narrow angular spread. We used a self-assembled monolayer of molecules with a well-defined molecular orientation to utilize the out-of-plane electric field in the cavity for enhancing Raman emission fro…
The control of quantum states of light at the nanoscale has become possible in recent years with the use of plasmonics. Here, many types of nanophotonic devices and applications have been suggested that take advantage of quantum optical effects, despite the inherent presence of loss. A key example is quantum plasmonic sensing, which provides sensitivity beyond the classical limit using entangled N00N states and their generalizations in a compact system operating below the diffraction limit. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate the excitation and propagation of a two-plasmon entangled N0…
Hybrid mesoscale-structures that can combine dielectric optical resonances with plasmon-polaritons are of interest in chip-scale nano-optical communication and sensing. This experimental study shows how a fluorescent microsphere coupled to a silver nanowire can act as a remotely-excited optical antenna. To realize this architecture, self-assembly methodology is used to couple a fluorescent silica microsphere to a single silver nanowire. By exciting propagating surface plasmon polaritons at one end of the nanowire, remote excitation of the Stokes-shifted whispering gallery modes (WGMs) of the m…
We investigate the propagation of surface-enhanced resonant Raman scattering (SERRS) light by several micrometers through a one-dimensional hotspot (1D HS) located between a plasmonic nanowire dimer (NWD). The propagation exhibits the properties, e.g. an effective propagation induced by excitation and detection polarization orthogonal to the 1D HS long axis, the propagation profiles composed of bright short and dark long propagations, SERRS spectral shapes independent of localized plasmon (LP) resonance of NWDs, redshifts in the SERRS spectra at the edges of 1D HSs, and considerable NWD-by-NWD…
We propose a system for guiding plasmon-enhanced polarized single photons into optical nanowire (ONW) guided modes. It is shown that spontaneous emission properties of quantum emitters (QEs) can be strongly enhanced in the presence of gold nanorod dimer (GNRD) leading to the emission of highly polarized and bright single photons. We have calculated that a high Purcell factor of 279, coupling efficiency of 11 %, and degree of polarization (DOP) of single photons is estimated to be as high as 99.57% in the guided modes of ONW by suitably placing a QE on an optimized location of the GNRD system. …
Designing directional optical antennas without compromising the field enhancement requires specially designed optical cavities. Herein, we report on the experimental observations of directional photoluminescence emission from a monolayer Tungsten Disulfide using a bent-plasmonic nanowire on a mirror cavity. The geometry provides field enhancement and directivity to photoluminescence by sandwiching the monolayer between an extended cavity formed by dropcasting bent silver nanowire and a gold mirror. We image the photoluminescence emission wavevectors by using the Fourier plane imaging technique…
Dispersion characteristics of four types of superconducting nanowire single photon detectors, nano-cavity-array- (NCA-), nano-cavity-deflector-array- (NCDA-), nano-cavity-double-deflector-array- (NCDDA-) and nano-cavity-trench-array- (NCTA-) integrated (I-A-SNSPDs) devices was optimized in three periodicity intervals commensurate with half-, three-quarter- and one SPP wavelength. The optimal configurations capable of maximizing NbN absorptance correspond to periodicity dependent tilting in S-orientation (90° azimuthal orientation). In NCAI-A-SNSPDs absorptance maxima are reached at the plasmon…
Nanoscale pulsed light is highly desirable in nano-integrated optics. In this letter, we obtained femtosecond pulses with THz repetition frequency via the strong coupling between quantum emitters (QEs) and plasmonic resonators. Our structure consists of a V-groove (VG) plasmonic resonator and a nanowire embedded with two-level QEs. The influences of the incident light intensity and QE number density on the transmission response for this hybrid system are investigated through semi-classical theory and simulation. It is found that the transmission response can be modulated to the pulse form. The…
Using a random array of coupled metallic nanowires as a generic example of disordered plasmonic systems, we demonstrate that the structural disorder induces localization of light in these nanostructures at a deep-subwavelength scale. The ab initio analysis is based on solving the complete set of 3D Maxwell equations. We find that random variations of the radius of coupled plasmonic nanowires are sufficient to induce the Anderson localization (AL) of surface-plasmon polaritons (SPPs), the size of these trapped modes being significantly smaller than the wavelength. Remarkably, the optical-gain c…
A combined analytical and numerical study of the modes in two distinct plasmonic nanowire systems is presented. The computations are based on a Discontinuous Galerkin Time-Domain approach and a fully nonlinear and nonlocal hydrodynamic Drude model for the metal is utilized. In the linear regime, these computations demonstrate the strong influence of nonlocality on the field distributions as well as on the scattering and absorption spectra. Based on these results, second-harmonic generation efficiencies are computed over a frequency range that covers all relevant modes of the linear spectra. In…
We develop a self-consistent finite element method to study spontaneous emission at nanoscale proximity of plasmonic waveguides. In the model, it is assumed that only one guided mode is dominatingly excited by the quantum emitter. With such one dominating mode assumption, the cross section of the plasmonic waveguide can be arbitrary. We apply our numerical method to calculate the coupling of a quantum emitter to a cylindrical nanowire and a rectangular waveguide, and compare the cylindrical nanowire to previous work valid in quasistatic approximation. The fraction of the energy coupled to the …
Plasmonic nano structures such as wire waveguides or antennas are key building blocks for novel highly integrated photonics. A quantitative understanding of the optical material properties of individual structures on the nanoscale is thus indispensable for predicting and designing the functionality of complex composite elements. In this letter we study propagating surface plasmon polaritons in single silver nanowires isolated from its environment by levitation in a linear Paul trap. Symmetry-breaking effects, e.g., from supporting substrates are completely eliminated in this way. Illuminated w…
Detecting spatial and temporal information of individual photons by using single-photon-detector (SPD) arrays is critical to applications in spectroscopy, communication, biological imaging, astronomical observation, and quantum-information processing. Among the current SPDs1,detectors based on superconducting nanowires have outstanding performance2, but are limited in their ability to be integrated into large scale arrays due to the engineering difficulty of high-bandwidth cryogenic electronic readout3-8. Here, we address this problem by demonstrating a scalable single-photon imager using a si…
Photoexcitation and shaping of a propagating surface plasmon polariton (SPP) on silver and gold microstructures are well established and lead to the discovery of the plasmonic spin-Hall effect recently. Whereas silver is often the material of choice due to its exceptional low plasma frequency and weak damping, similar observations have not been reported for ferromagnetic metals. In this work, we report on propagating SPPs on Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ microstructures imaged by photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) in combination with a tunable femtosecond laser system at MHz repetition rate. Laser science has tackled physical limitations to achieve higher power, faster and smaller light sources. The quest for ultra-compact laser that can directly generate coherent optical fields at the nano-scale, far beyond the diffraction limit of light, remains a key fundamental challenge. Microscopic lasers based on photonic crystals, micro-disks, metal clad cavities and nanowires can now reach the diffraction limit, which restricts both the optical mode size and physical device dimension to be larger than half a wavelength. While surface plasmons are capable of tightly localizing light, ohmic…
A nanostructured chalcogenide-metal optical fiber is proposed. This hybrid nanofiber is embedded with a periodic array of triangular-shaped deep-subwavelength metallic nanowires set up in a bowtie configuration. Our simulations show that the proposed nanostructured fiber supports a guided collective plasmonic mode enabling both subwavelength field confinement and extreme nonlinear light- matter interactions, much larger than a bare chalcogenide nanowire of comparable diameter. This is all achieved with less than 3% by volume of metal content.
We show the existence of a very large spin Hall effect of light (SHEL) in single photon plasmonics based on spontaneous emission and the dipole-dipole interaction initiated energy transfer (FRET) on plasmonic platforms. The spin orbit coupling inherent in Maxwell equations is seen in the conversion of sigma + photon to sigma - photon. The FRET is mediated by the resonant surface plasmons and hence we find very large SHEL. We present explicit results for SHEL on both graphene and metal films. We also study how the splitting of the surface plasmon on a metal film affects the SHEL. In contrast to…
We demonstrate that unidirectional and backscattering immune propagation of terahertz optical waves can be achieved in a topological valley-Hall waveguide made of graphene nanohole plasmonic crystals. In order to gain deeper physical insights into these phenomena, the band diagram of graphene nanohole plamsonic crystals has been investigated and optimized. We found that a graphene plasmonic crystal with nanohole arrays belonging to the $C_{6v}$ symmetry group possesses gapless Dirac cones, which can be gapped out by introducing extra nanoholes such that the symmetry point group of the system i…
Simultaneous manifestation of both forward and inverse photonic Spin Hall effect in geometrically tailored anisotropic waveguided plasmonic crystal system is observed through the excitation of the leaky hybridized quasiguided modes. The quasiguided modes of the plasmonic crystal manifested in the far-field momentum (Fourier) domain as circular ring-like intensity distributions, and the different spin orbit interaction (SOI) effects revealed their exclusive signature as polarization-dependent azimuthal intensity lobes on top of it. Using a darkfield Fourier domain polarization Mueller matrix pl…
By studying the scattering of normally incident planewaves by a single nanowire, we reveal the indispensable role of toroidal multipole excitation in multipole expansions of radiating sources. It is found that for both p-polarized and s-polarized incident waves, toroidal dipoles can be effectively excited within homogenous dielectric nanowires in the optical spectrum regime. We further demonstrate that the plasmonic core-shell nanowires can be rendered invisible through destructive interference of the electric and toroidal dipoles, which may inspire many nanowire based light-matter interaction…
We report the coupling of photons from an optical fiber taper to surface plasmon modes of silver nanowires. The launch of propagating plasmons can be realized not only at ends of the nanowires, but also at the midsection. The degree of the coupling can be controlled by adjusting the light polarization. In addition, we present the coupling of light into multiple nanowires from a single optical fiber taper simultaneously. Our demonstration offers a novel method for optimizing plasmon coupling into nanoscale metallic waveguides and promotes the realization of highly integrated plasmonic devices.
Spin-orbit interactions (SOI) are a set of sub-wavelength optical phenomenon in which spin and spatial degrees of freedom of light are intrinsically coupled. One of the unique example of SOI, spin-Hall effect of light (SHEL) has been an area of extensive research with potential applications in spin controlled photonic devices as well as emerging fields of spinoptics and spintronics. Here, we report our experimental study on SHEL due to forward scattering of focused linearly polarized Gaussian and Hermite-Gaussian ($\textrm{HG}_{10}$) beams from a silver nanowire (AgNW). Spin dependent anti-sym…
We report the experimental observation of the transverse spin and associated spin-momentum locking of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) excited in a plasmonic single crystalline silver nanowire (AgNW). In contrast to the SPPs excited in metal films, the electromagnetic field components of the evanescent SPP mode propagating along the long axis ($x$ axis) of the NW can decay along two longitudinal planes ($x$-$y$ and $x$-$z$ planes), resulting in two orthogonal transverse spin components ($s_z$ and $s_y$). Analysis of the opposite circular polarization components of the decaying SPP mode signal…
It is generally believed that when a single metallic nanowire is sufficiently small, it scatters like a point electric dipole. We show theoretically when a metallic nanowire is placed inside specially designed beams, the non-negligible magnetic dipole contribution along with the electric dipole resonance can lead to unidirectional scattering in the far-field, fulfilling Kerker's condition. Remarkably, this far-field unidirectional scattering encodes information that is highly dependent on the nanowire's deflection at a scale much smaller than the wavelength. The special role of small but non-n…
We suggest a novel source of polarization-entangled photon pairs based on a cross-shaped plasmonic nanoantenna driven by a single quantum dot. The integration of the nanoantenna with a metal mirror overcomes the fundamental tradeoff between the spontaneous emission (SE) enhancement and the extraction efficiency typical of microcavity and nanowire-based architectures. With a very-high extraction efficiency of entangled photons (~90%) at 1.55 um and large SE enhancement (~90) over a broad 330 nm spectral range, the proposed design will pave the way toward reliable integrated sources of nonclassi…
Herein we report experimental evidence of directional SERS from molecules situated inside a single nanowire-nanoparticle junction cavity. The emission was confined to a narrow range of wavevectors perpendicular to the axis of the cavity. In addition to this, the molecules excite multiple guided modes of the nanowire which were imaged using leakage radiation Fourier microscopy. We further characterize the emission wavevectors as a function of output polarization. The excited guided modes of the wire show interesting polarization signatures. All the results were corroborated using finite element…
