The significant progress in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in last three decades has elevated it from a traditional band mapping tool to a precise probe of many-body interactions and dynamics of quasiparticles in complex quantum systems. The recent developments of deep ultraviolet (DUV, including ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet) laser-based ARPES have further pushed this technique to a new level. In this paper, we review some latest developments in DUV laser-based photoemission systems, including the super-high energy and momentum resolution ARPES, the spin-resolved ARPES, the time-of-flight ARPES, and the time-resolved ARPES. We also highlight some scientific applications in the study of electronic structure in unconventional superconductors and topological materials using these state-of-the-art DUV laser-based ARPES. Finally we provide our perspectives on the future directions in the development of laser-based photoemission systems.
We present a review on the developments in the photoemission spectrometer with a vacuum ultraviolet laser at Institute for Solid State Physics at the University of Tokyo. The advantages of high energy resolution, high cooling ability, and bulk sensitivity enable applications with a wide range of materials. We introduce some examples of fine electronic structures detected by laser photoemission spectroscopy and discuss the prospects of research on low-transition-temperature superconductors exhibiting unconventional superconductivity.
High resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on Bi2Sr2CuO6+d superconductor covering a wide doping range from heavily underdoped to heavily overdoped samples. Two obvious energy scales are identified in the nodal dispersions: one is the well-known 50-80 meV high energy kink and the other is <10 meV low energy kink. The high energy kink increases monotonously in its energy scale with increasing doping and shows weak temperature dependence, while the low energy kink exhibits a non-monotonic doping dependence with its coupling strength enhanced sharp…
We present the development of a high-precision sample-position-autocorrection system for photoemission experiments. A binocular vision method based on image pattern matching calculations was realized to track the sample position with an accuracy better than 1 \um, which was much smaller than the spot size of the incident laser. We illustrate the performance of the sample-position-autocorrection system with representative photoemission data on the topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and an optimally-doped cuprate superconductor \Bi. Our method provides new possibilities for studying the temperat…
Time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy has played an important role in revealing the non-equilibrium electronic structures of solid-state materials. The implementation of high harmonic generation to obtain a higher photon energy also allows us to investigate the wide Brillouin zone on a time scale below 100 fs. In this article, we review our recent studies using high-harmonic-generation-laser-based time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study a variety of quantum materials. We reveal many unprecedented phenomena in each system and highlight some representative resu…
Identification of Nodal Kink in Electron-Doped (Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$)CuO$_4$ Superconductor from Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy
Monotonic d-wave Superconducting Gap in Optimally-Doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_6$ Superconductor by Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy
We study the superconducting(SC)-gap anisotropy of the Γ-centered hole Fermi surface in optimally doped FeTe_{0.6}Se_{0.4} (T_c = 14.5 K), using laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We observe sharp superconducting coherence peaks at T = 2.5 K. In contrast to earlier ARPES studies but consistent with thermodynamic results, the momentum dependence shows a \cos(4φ) modulation of the SC-gap anisotropy. The observed SC-gap anisotropy strongly indicates that the pairing interaction is not a conventional phonon-mediated isotropic one. Instead, the results suggest the impo…
Super-high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been performed on a high temperature superconductor Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8. The band back-bending characteristic of the Bogoliubov-like quasiparticle dispersion is clearly revealed at low temperature in the superconducting state. This makes it possible for the first time to experimentally extract the complex electron self-energy and the complex gap function in the superconducting state. The resultant electron self-energy and gap function exhibit features at ~54 meV and ~40 meV, in addition to the superconducting gap-in…
High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements are carried out to systematically investigate the effect of cleaving temperature on the electronic structure and Fermi surface of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Different from previous reports that high cleaving temperature can suppress surface Fermi surface, we find that the surface Fermi surface remains obvious and strong in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ cleaved at high temperature, even at room temperature. This indicates that cleaving temperature is not a key effective factor in suppressing the surface bands. On the other hand, in the aged surface of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$…

For solid-state materials, the electronic structure, E(k), is critical in determining a crystal's physical properties. By experimentally detecting the electronic structure, the fundamental physics can be revealed. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is a powerful technique for directly observing the electronic structure with energy- and momentum-resolved information. Over the past decades, major improvements in the energy and momentum resolution, alongside the extension of ARPES observables to spin (SpinARPES), micrometer or nanometer lateral dimensions (MicroARPES/NanoARPES), an…
Super-high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi2212) superconductors to investigate momentum dependence of electron coupling with collective excitations (modes). Two coexisting energy scales are clearly revealed over a large momentum space for the first time in the superconducting state of an overdoped Bi2212 superconductor. These two energy scales exhibit distinct momentum dependence: one keeps its energy near 78 meV over a large momentum space while the other changes its energy from $\sim$40 meV near the antinodal regio…
We review recent work on the theory for pump/probe photoemission spectroscopy of electron-phonon mediated superconductors in both the normal and the superconducting states. We describe the formal developments that allow one to solve the Migdal-Eliashberg theory in nonequilibrium for an ultrashort laser pumping field, and explore the solutions which illustrate the relaxation as energy is transferred from electrons to phonons. We focus on exact results emanating from sum rules and approximate numerical results which describe rules of thumb for relaxation processes. In addition, in the supercondu…
The detailed information of the electronic structure is the key for understanding the nature of charge density wave (CDW) order and its relationship with superconducting order in microscopic level. In this paper, we present high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study on the three-dimensional (3D) hole-like Fermi surface around the Brillouin zone center in a prototypical qusi-one-dimensional CDW and superconducting system ZrTe3. Double Fermi surface sheets are clearly resolved for the 3D hole-like Fermi surface around the zone center. The 3D Fermi surface…

The electronic structure near the Fermi level (EF) of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (BaK122 ; x = 0.2 - 0.7) is studied using laser ultrahigh-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy(ARPES). For the optimally doped case of x = 0.4, we clearly observe two peaks below Tc in the ARPES spectra at a binding energies (BE) of 5 meV and 13meV. The former is assigned to a superconducting (SC) coherence peak since it appears and evolves below the bulk SC transition at Tc (= 36 K), accompanying a gap opening centered at EF. In contrast, the latter peak, which appears below ~ 90 K without any gap formation, i…
Doping Evolution of Nodal Electron Dynamics in Trilayer Cuprate Superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ Revealed by Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy
Transient single-particle spectral function of BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, a parent compound of iron-based superconductors, has been studied by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with an extreme-ultraviolet laser generated by higher harmonics from Ar gas, which enables us to investigate the dynamics in the entire Brillouin zone. We observed electronic modifications from the spin-density-wave (SDW) ordered state within $\sim$ 1 ps after the arrival of a 1.5 eV pump pulse. We observed optically excited electrons at the zone center above $E_{F}$ at 0.12 ps, and their rapid decay. After t…
We present the development of a time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy based on a Yb-based femtosecond laser and a hemispherical electron analyzer. The energy of the pump photon is tunable between 1.4 and 1.9 eV, and the pulse duration is around 30 fs. We use a KBe$_2$BO$_3$F$_2$ non-linear optical crystal to generate probe pulses, of which the photon energy is up to 6.7 eV, and obtain an overall time resolution of 1 ps and energy resolution of 18 meV. In addition, $β$-BaB$_2$O$_4$ crystals are used to generate alternative probe pulses at 6.05 eV, giving an overall time resolution…
Electron emission from the negative electron affinity (NEA) surface of hydrogen terminated, boron doped diamond in the [100] orientation is investigated using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). ARPES measurements using 16 eV synchrotron and 6 eV laser light are compared and found to show a catastrophic failure of the sudden approximation. While the high energy photoemission is found to yield little information regarding the NEA, low energy laser ARPES reveals for the first time that the NEA results from a novel Franck-Condon mechanism coupling electrons in the conduction band t…
In high-temperature superconductivity, the process that leads to the formation of Cooper pairs, the fundamental charge carriers in any superconductor, remains mysterious. We use a femtosecond laser pump pulse to perturb superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ, and study subsequent dynamics using time- and angle-resolved photoemission and infrared reflectivity probes. Gap and quasiparticle population dynamics reveal marked dependencies on both excitation density and crystal momentum. Close to the d-wave nodes, the superconducting gap is sensitive to the pump intensity and Cooper pairs recombine slowly.…
High-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors are characterized by a strong momentum-dependent anisotropy between the low energy excitations along the Brillouin zone diagonal (nodal direction) and those along the Brillouin zone face (antinodal direction). Most obvious is the d-wave superconducting gap, with the largest magnitude found in the antinodal direction and no gap in the nodal direction. Additionally, while antinodal quasiparticle excitations appear only below $T_c$, superconductivity is thought to be indifferent to nodal excitations as they are regarded robust and insensitive to $T_c$. Here we r…
