Discrete Boltzmann model (DBM) is a type of coarse-grained mesoscale kinetic model derived from the Boltzmann equation. Physically, it is roughly equivalent to a hydrodynamic model supplemented by a coarse-grained model for the relevant thermodynamic non-equilibrium (TNE) behaviours. The Navier-Stokes (NS) model is a traditional macroscopic hydrodynamic model based on continuity hypothesis and conservation laws. In this study, the two models are compared from two aspects, physical capability and computational cost, by simulating two kinds of flow problems including the thermal Couette flow and a Mach 3 step problem. In the cases where the TNE effects are weak, both the two models give accurate results for the hydrodynamic behaviour. Besides, DBM can provide more detailed non-equilibrium information, while the NS is more efficient if concern only the density, momentum, energy and their derived quantities. It is concluded that, if the TNE effects are strong or are to be investigated, the NS is insufficient while DBM is a good choice. While in the cases where the TNE effects are weak and only the macro flow fields are to be studied, the NS is more preferable.
A numerical method, based on the discrete lattice Boltzmann equation, is presented for solving the volume-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. With a modified equilibrium distribution and an additional forcing term, the volume-averaged Navier-Stokes equations can be recovered from the lattice Boltzmann equation in the limit of small Mach number by the Chapman-Enskog analysis and Taylor expansion. Due to its advantages such as explicit solver and inherent parallelism, the method appears to be more competitive with traditional numerical techniques. Numerical simulations show that the proposed model…
In this paper, we propose a lattice Boltzmann (LB) model to solve the coupled Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes equations. Differently from previous efforts, the LB equation for the fluid velocity is decomposed in a space of non-orthogonal central moments where the surface tension force is inserted directly in the equilibrium state. The present scheme is validated against well-consolidated benchmark tests, showing very good accuracy. Moreover, it outperforms the BGK approach in terms of stability, as our algorithm allows us to simulate a very large range of viscosity contrast.

In this paper, a multiple-distribution-function lattice Boltzmann method (MDF-LBM) with multiple-relaxation-time model is proposed for incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (NSEs) which are considered as the coupled convection-diffusion equations (CDEs). Through direct Taylor expansion analysis, we show that the Navier-Stokes equations can be recovered correctly from the present MDF-LBM, and additionally, it is also found that the velocity and pressure can be directly computed through the zero and first-order moments of distribution function. Then in the framework of present MDF-LBM, we devel…
A decoupled scheme based on the Hermite expansion to construct lattice Boltzmann models for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with arbitrary specific heat ratio is proposed. The local equilibrium distribution function including the rotational velocity of particle is decoupled into two parts, i.e. the local equilibrium distribution function of the translational velocity of particle and that of the rotational velocity of particle. From these two local equilibrium functions, two lattice Boltzmann models are derived via the Hermite expansion, namely one is in relation to the translational v…
Exact solution to the hierarchy of nonlinear lattice Boltzmann (LB) kinetic equations in the stationary planar Couette flow is found at non-vanishing Knudsen numbers. A new method of solving LB kinetic equations which combines the method of moments with boundary conditions for populations enables to derive closed-form solutions for all higher-order moments. Convergence of results suggests that the LB hierarchy with larger velocity sets is the novel way to approximate kinetic theory.
In spite of the large number of papers appeared in the past which are devoted to the lattice Boltzmann (LB) methods, basic aspects of the theory still remain unchallenged. An unsolved theoretical issue is related to the construction of a discrete kinetic theory which yields \textit{exactly} the fluid equations, i.e., is non-asymptotic (here denoted as \textit{LB inverse kinetic theory}). The purpose of this paper is theoretical and aims at developing an inverse kinetic approach of this type. In principle infinite solutions exist to this problem but the freedom can be exploited in order to meet…
We present a further theoretical extension to the kinetic theory based formulation of the lattice Boltzmann method of Shan et al (2006). In addition to the higher order projection of the equilibrium distribution function and a sufficiently accurate Gauss-Hermite quadrature in the original formulation, a new regularization procedure is introduced in this paper. This procedure ensures a consistent order of accuracy control over the non-equilibrium contributions in the Galerkin sense. Using this formulation, we construct a specific lattice Boltzmann model that accurately incorporates up to the th…
In multiscale, multi-physics applications, there is an increasing need for coupling numerical solvers that are each applied to a different part of the problem. Here we consider the case of coupling a Lattice Boltzmann fluid model and a Finite Difference Navier-Stokes solver. The coupling is implemented so that the entire computational domain can be divided in two regions, with the FD solver running on one of them and the LB one on the other. We show how the various physical quantities of the two approaches should be related to ensure a smooth transition at the interface between the regions. We…
The off-lattice Boltzmann (OLB) method consists of numerical schemes which are used to solve the discrete Boltzmann equation. Unlike the commonly used lattice Boltzmann method, the spatial and time steps are uncoupled in the OLB method. In the currently proposed schemes, which can be broadly classified into Runge-Kutta-based and characteristics-based, the size of the time-step is limited due to numerical stability constraints. In this work, we systematically compare the numerical stability of the proposed schemes in terms of the maximum stable time-step. In line with the overall LB method, we …

Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has been applied to predict flow properties of porous media including intrinsic permeability, where it is implicitly assumed that the LBM is equivalent to the incompressible (or near incompressible) Navier-Stokes equation. However, in LBM simulations, high-order moments, which are completely neglected in the Navier-Stokes equation, are still available through particle distribution functions. To ensure that the LBM simulation is correctly working at the Navier-Stokes hydrodynamic level, the high-order moments have to be negligible. This requires that the Knudsen n…

Conventional lattice Boltzmann models only satisfy moment isotropy up to fourth order. In order to accurately describe improtant physical effects beyond the isothermal Navier-Stokes fluid regime, higher order isotropy is required. In this paper, we present some basic results on moment isotropy and its relationship to the rotational symmetry of a generating discrete vector set. The anslysis provides a geometric understanding for popular lattice Boltzmann models, while offering a systematic procedure to construct higher order models.
In the first part of this study, we compared the performances of two categories of no-slip boundary treatments, i.e., the interpolated bounce-back schemes and the immersed boundary methods in a series of laminar flow simulations within the lattice Boltzmann method. In this second part, these boundary treatments are further compared in the simulations of turbulent flows with complex geometry to provide a next-level assessment of these schemes. Two non-trivial turbulent flow problems, a fully developed turbulent pipe flow at a low Reynolds number, and a decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulent f…

A multiple-relaxation-time discrete Boltzmann model (DBM) is proposed for multicomponent mixtures, where compressible, hydrodynamic, and thermodynamic nonequilibrium effects are taken into account. It allows the specific heat ratio and the Prandtl number to be adjustable, and is suitable for both low and high speed fluid flows. From the physical side, besides being consistent with the multicomponent Navier-Stokes equations, Fick's law and Stefan-Maxwell diffusion equation in the hydrodynamic limit, the DBM provides more kinetic information about the nonequilibrium effects. The physical capabil…
We propose a kinetic framework for single-component non-ideal isothermal flows. Starting from a kinetic model for a non-ideal fluid, we show that under conventional scaling the Navier-Stokes equations with a non-ideal equation of state are recovered in the hydrodynamic limit. A scaling based on the smallness of velocity increments is then introduced, which recovers the full Navier-Stokes-Korteweg equations. The proposed model is realized on a standard lattice and validated on a variety of benchmarks. Through a detailed study of thermodynamic properties including co-existence densities, surface…
A D2Q9 Hybrid Lattice Boltzmann Method (HLBM) is proposed for the simulation of both compressible subsonic and supersonic flows. This HLBM is an extension of the model of Feng et al: [12], which has been found, via different test cases, to be unstable for supersonic regimes. The improvements consist of: (1) a new discretization of the lattice closure correction term making possible to properly simulate supersonic flows, (2) a corrected viscous stress tensor that takes into account polyatomic gases, and (3) a novel discretization of the viscous heat production term fitting with the regularized …
The interpolated bounce-back scheme and the immersed boundary method are the two most popular algorithms in treating a no-slip boundary on curved surfaces in the lattice Boltzmann method. While those algorithms are frequently implemented in the numerical simulations involving complex geometries, such as particle-laden flows, their performances are seldom compared systematically over the same local quantities within the same context. In this paper, we present a systematic comparative investigation on some frequently used and most state-of-the-art interpolated bounce-back schemes and immersed bo…
The discretized equilibrium distributions of the lattice Boltzmann method are presented by using the coefficients of the Lagrange interpolating polynomials that pass through the points related to discrete velocities and using moments of the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. The ranges of flow velocity and temperature providing positive valued distributions vary with regulating discrete velocities as parameters. New isothermal and thermal compressible models are proposed for flows of the level of the isothermal and thermal compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Thermal compressible shock tube flow…
The direct numerical simulation of particulate systems offers a unique approach to study the dynamics of fluid-solid suspensions by fully resolving the submerged particles and without introducing empirical models. For the lattice Boltzmann method, different variants exist to incorporate the fluid-particle interaction into the simulation. This paper provides a detailed and systematic comparison of two different methods, namely the momentum exchange method and the partially saturated cells method by Noble and Torczynski. Three subvariants of each method are used in the benchmark scenario of a si…
Rooted from the gas kinetics, the lattice Boltzmann method is a powerful tool in modeling hydrodynamics. In the past decade, it has been extended to simulate the rarefied gas flow beyond the Navier-Stokes level, either by using the high-order Gauss-Hermite quadrature, or by introducing the relaxation time that is a function of the gas-wall distance. While the former method, with a limited number of discrete velocities (i.e. D2Q36), is accurate up to the early transition flow regime, the latter method, with the same discrete velocities as that used in simulating hydrodynamics (i.e. D2Q9), is ac…
The general characteristics based off-lattice Boltzmann scheme (BKG) proposed by Bardow et~al.(2006), and the discrete unified gas kinetic scheme (DUGKS) are two methods that successfully overcome the time step restriction by the collision time, which is commonly seen in many other kinetic schemes. Basically, the BKG scheme is a time splitting scheme, while the DUGKS is an un-split finite volume scheme. In this work, we first perform a theoretical analysis of the two schemes in the finite volume framework by comparing their numerical flux evaluations. It is found that the effects of collision …
In this paper, we present a simple and accurate lattice Boltzmann (LB) model for immiscible two-phase flows, which is able to deal with large density contrasts. This model utilizes two LB equations, one of which is used to solve the conservative Allen-Cahn equation, and the other is adopted to solve the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. A novel forcing distribution function is elaborately designed in the LB equation for the Navier-Stokes equations, which make it much simpler than the existing LB models. In addition, the proposed model can achieve superior numerical accuracy compared with…
We study a two phase flow with interactions of liquid and rarefied gas inside the gas phase. The gas phase is modeled by the BGK model of the Boltzmann equation. The liquid phase is modeled by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. In this paper we have excluded the heat transfer between two phases. The interface boundary conditions for the liquid and gas phases is presented. The BGK model is solved by a semi-Lagrangian scheme with a meshfree reconstruction since the droplet moves inside the gas phase and its interface deforms with respect to time and space. Therefore, the similar meshfre…
Based on the recently-established Master kinetic equation and related Master constant H-theorem which describe the statistical behavior of the Boltzmann-Sinai classical dynamical system for smooth and hard spherical particles, the problem is posed of determining a microscopic statistical description holding for an incompressible Navier-Stokes fluid. The goal is reached by introducing a suitable mean-field interaction in the Master kinetic equation. The resulting Modified Master Kinetic Equation (MMKE) is proved to warrant at the same time the condition of mass-density incompressibility and the…
A lattice Boltzmann method for axisymmetric multiphase flows is presented and validated. The method is capable of accurately modeling flows with variable density. We develop the classic Shan-Chen multiphase model [ Phys. Rev. E 47 1815 (1993)] for axisymmetric flows. The model can be used to efficiently simulate single and multiphase flows. The convergence to the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations is demonstrated analytically by means of a Chapmann-Enskog expansion and numerically through several test cases. In particular, the model is benchmarked for its accuracy in reproducing the dynamics…
We propose a two-population lattice Boltzmann model on standard lattices for the simulation of compressible flows. The model is fully on-lattice and uses the single relaxation time Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook kinetic equations along with appropriate correction terms to recover the Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations. The accuracy and performance of the model are analyzed through simulations of compressible benchmark cases including Sod shock tube, sound generation in shock-vortex interaction and compressible decaying turbulence in a box with eddy shocklets. It is demonstrated that the present model prov…
Mathematically, the typical difference of Discrete Boltzmann Model (DBM) from the traditional hydrodynamic one is that the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations are replaced by a discrete Boltzmann equation. But physically, this replacement has a significant gain: a DBM is roughly equivalent to a hydrodynamic model supplemented by a coarse-grained model of the Thermodynamic Non-Equilibrium (TNE) effects, where the hydrodynamic model can be and can also beyond the NS. Via the DBM, it is convenient to perform simulations on systems with flexible Knudsen number. The observations on TNE are being obtaining…
Thermal flows characterized by high Prandtl number are numerically challenging as the transfer of momentum and heat occurs at different time scales. To account for very low thermal conductivity and obey the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy condition, the numerical diffusion of the scheme has to be reduced. As a consequence, the numerical artefacts are dominated by dispersion errors commonly known as wiggles. In this study, we explore possible remedies in the framework of the lattice Boltzmann method by applying novel collision kernels, lattices with a large number of discrete velocities, namely D3Q27, …
A one-dimensional discrete Boltzmann model for detonation simulation is presented. Instead of numerical solving Navier-Stokes equations, this model obtains the information of flow field through numerical solving specially discretized Boltzmann equation. Several classical benchmarks including Sod shock wave tube, Colella explosion problem, and one-dimensional self-sustainable stable detonation are simulated to validate the new model. Based on the new model, the influence of negative temperature coefficient of reaction rate on detonation is further investigated. It is found that an abnormal deto…

In this article, we present a detailed asymptotic analysis of the lattice Boltzmann method with two different collision mechanisms of BGK-type on the D2Q9-lattice for generalized Newtonian fluids. Unlike that based on the Chapman-Enskog expansion leading to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, our analysis gives the incompressible ones directly and exposes certain important features of the lattice Boltzmann solutions. Moreover, our analysis provides a theoretical basis for using the iteration to compute the rate-of-strain tensor, which makes sense specially for generalized Newtonian fluid…
There are several reasons to extend the presentation of Navier-Stokes equations to multicomponent systems. Many technological applications are based on physical phenomena that are present neither in pure elements nor in binary mixtures. Whereas Fourier's law must already be generalized in binaries, it is only with more than two components that Fick's law breaks down in its simple form. The emergence of dissipative phenomena affects also the inertial confinement fusion configurations, designed as prototypes for the future fusion nuclear plants hopefully replacing the fission ones. This importan…
A new multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann scheme for compressible flows with arbitrary specific heat ratio and Prandtl number is presented. In the new scheme, which is based on a two-dimensional 16-discrete-velocity model, the moment space and the corresponding transformation matrix are constructed according to the seven-moment relations associated with the local equilibrium distribution function. In the continuum limit, the model recovers the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with flexible specific-heat ratio and Prandtl number. Numerical experiments show that compressible flows wit…
