Two-dimensional (2D) boron has been predicted to show superconductivity. However, intrinsic 2D carbon and phosphorus have not been reported to be superconductors, which, inspires us to seek superconductivity in their mixture. Here we perform first-principles calculations of the electronic structure, phonon dispersion, and electron-phonon coupling of the metallic phosphorus carbide monolayer, the $β_{0}$-PC. Results show that it is an intrinsic phonon-mediated superconductor, with estimated superconducting temperature $T_{c}$ to be $\sim$13 K. The main contribution to the electron-phonon coupling is from the out-of-plane vibrations of phosphorus. A Kohn anomaly on the first acoustic branch is observed. The superconducting related physical quantities is found tunable by applying strain or carrier doping.
In the recent years, three-dimensional (3D) high-temperature superconductors at ultrahigh pressure have been reported, typical examples are the polyhydrides H$_{3}$S, LaH$_{10}$, and YH$_{9}$, etc. To find high-temperature superconductors in two-dimensional (2D) at atmosphere pressure is another research hotspot. Here, we investigated the possible superconductivity in a hydrogenated monolayer phosphorus carbide based on first-principles calculations. The results reveal that monolayer PC$_{3}$ transforms from a semiconductor to a metal after hydrogenation. Interestingly, the C-$π$-bonding band …
First-principles calculations predicted monolayer blue phosphorus to be an alternative two-dimensional allotrope of phosphorus, like the recently discovered monolayer black phosphorus. Due to its unique crystalline and electronic structure, blue phosphorus may be a promising candidate as a BCS-superconductor after proper intercalation. In this study, using first-principles calculations, the favorable intercalation sites for some alkali metals and alkaline earths have been identified for Blue-P bilayer and the stacking configuration of bilayer is changed. Then the blue phosphorus bilayer transf…
Co-doping of lanthanum and phosphorus in CaFe2As2 induces superconductivity at 45 K. This superconducting transition temperature is higher than the 38 K transition in Ba1-xKxFe2As2, which is the maximum found thus far among the 122 phases. Superconductivity with a substantial shielding volume fraction was observed at 0.12 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.18 and y = 0.06 in Ca1-xLaxFe2(As1-yPy)2. The superconducting phase of the present system seems to be not adjacent to an antiferromagnetic phase.
The effects of phosphorus doping on the structural and superconducting phase transitions of BaNi$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ were studied. The specific heat, resistivity, and magnetic susceptibility were measured. The results revealed an abrupt increase in the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) from 0.6 K in the triclinic phase (space group P$\bar{1}$) with less phosphorus (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.067) to 3.3 K in the tetragonal phase (space group I4/mmm) with more phosphorus ($x$ $\geq$ 0.067). Our data analysis suggests that a doping-induced softening related to an in-plane Ni and As(…
The discoveries of superconductivity in heavily boron-doped diamond (C:B) in 2004 and silicon (Si:B) in 2006 renew the interest in the superconducting state of semiconductors. Charge-carrier doping of wide-gap semiconductors leads to a metallic phase from which upon further doping superconductivity can emerge. Recently, we discovered superconductivity in a closely related system: heavily-boron doped silicon carbide (SiC:B). The sample used for that study consists of cubic and hexagonal SiC phase fractions and hence this lead to the question which of them participates in the superconductivity. …
The discoveries of superconductivity in heavily boron-doped diamond, silicon and silicon carbide renewed the interest in the ground states of charge-carrier doped wide-gap semiconductors. Recently, aluminium doping in silicon carbide successfully yielded a metallic phase from which at high aluminium concentrations superconductivity emerges. Here, we present a specific-heat study on superconducting aluminium-doped silicon carbide. We observe a clear jump anomaly at the superconducting transition temperature 1.5 K indicating that aluminium-doped silicon carbide is a bulk superconductor. An analy…
In 2004 the discovery of superconductivity in heavily boron-doped diamond (C:B) led to an increasing interest in the superconducting phases of wide-gap semiconductors. Subsequently superconductivity was found in heavily boron-doped cubic silicon (Si:B) and recently in the stochiometric ''mixture'' of heavily boron-doped silicon carbide (SiC:B). The latter system surprisingly exhibits type-I superconductivity in contrast to the type-II superconductors C:B and Si:B. Here we will focus on the specific heat of two different superconducting samples of boron-doped SiC. One of them contains cubic and…
We report on the synthesis and the superconductivity of Zr$_4$Rh$_2$O$_{x}$ ($x$ = 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 1.0). These compounds crystallize in the $η$-carbide structure, which is a filled version of the complex intermetallic Ti$_2$Ni structure. We find that in the system Zr$_4$Rh$_2$O$_{x}$, already a small amount ($x$ $\geq$ 0.4) of oxygen addition stabilizes the $η$-carbide structure over the more common intermetallic CuAl$_2$ structure-type, in which Zr$_2$Rh crystallizes. We show that Zr$_4$Rh$_2$O$_{0.7}$ and Zr$_4$Rh$_2$O are bulk superconductors with critical temperatures of $T_c \approx$ …
We have studied EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_{2}$ by the measurements of x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, thermopower, magnetic susceptibility, magnetoresistance and specific heat. Partial substitution of As with P results in the shrinkage of lattice, which generates chemical pressure to the system. It is found that EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_{2}$ undergoes a superconducting transition at 26 K, followed by ferromagnetic ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ moments at 20 K. This finding is the first observation of superconductivity stabilized by internal chemical pressure, and supplies a r…
Simple cubic phosphorus exhibits superconductivity with a maximum $T_c$ of up to 12 K under pressure. The pressure dependence of $T_c$ cannot be consistently explained with a simple electron-phonon mechanism, which has stimulated investigations into the role of electronic correlations and plasmonic contributions. Here, we solve the gap equation of density functional theory for superconductors using different electron-electron and electron-phonon contributions to the kernel. We find that the phonon contribution alone yields an overestimation of $T_c$, while the addition of the static electronic…
The influence of carrier type on superconductivity has been an important issue for understanding both conventional and unconventional superconductors [1-7]. For elements that superconduct, it is known that hole-carriers govern the superconductivity for transition and main group metals [8-10]. The role of hole-carriers in elements that are not normally conducting but can be converted to superconductors, however, remains unclear due to the lack of experimental data. Here we report the first in-situ high pressure Hall effect measurements on single crystal black phosphorus, measured up to ~ 50 GPa…
We report for the first time the occurrence of superconductivity in the quaternary silicide carbide YRe2SiC with Tc = 5.9 K. The emergence of superconductivity was confirmed by means of magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and heat capacity measurements. The presence of a well developed heat capacity feature at Tc confirms that superconductivity is a bulk phenomenon, while a second feature in the heat capacity near 0.5 Tc combined with the unusual temperature dependence of the upper critical field Hc2(T) indicate the presence of a multiband superconducting state. Additionally, the …
We report the observation of local superconductivity induced at the point contact formed between a normal metal tip and WC -- a triple point topological semimetal with super hardness. Remarkably, the maximum critical temperature is up to near 12 K but insensitive to the tip's magnetism. The lateral dimensions of the superconducting puddles were evaluated and the temperature dependencies of superconducting gap and upper critical field were also obtained. These results put constraints on the explanation of the induced superconductivity and pave a pathway for exploring topological superconductivi…
Interfaces between materials with different electronic ground states have become powerful platforms for creating and controlling novel quantum states of matter, in which inversion symmetry breaking and other effects at the interface may introduce additional electronic states. Among the emergent phenomena, superconductivity is of particular interest. In this work, by depositing metal films on a newly identified topological semimetal tungsten carbide (WC) single crystal, we have obtained interfacial topological superconductivity evidenced from soft point contact spectroscopy. This very robust ph…
In 2007, type-I superconductivity in heavily boron-doped silicon carbide was discovered. The question arose, if it is possible to achieve a superconducting phase by introducing dopants different from boron. Recently, aluminum-doped silicon carbide was successfully found to superconduct by means of resistivity and DC magnetization measurements. In contrast to boron-doped silicon carbide, the aluminum doped system is treated as a type-II superconductor because of the absence of an hysteresis in data measured upon decreasing and increasing temperature in finite magnetic fields. In this paper, res…
The transition metal carbide Sc3CoC4 consists of a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) structure with [CoC4]$_{\inft}$ polyanionic chains embedded in a scandium matrix. At ambient temperatures Sc3CoC4 displays metallic behavior. At lower temperatures, however, charge density wave formation has been observed around 143K which is followed by a structural phase transition at 72K. Below T^onset_c = 4.5K the polycrystalline sample becomes superconductive. From Hc1(0) and Hc2(0) values we could estimate the London penetration depth (λ_L ~= 9750 Angstroem) and the Ginsburg-Landau (GL) coherence length (ξ_GL ~…
The upper critical field is a fundamental measure of the strength of superconductivity in a material. It is also a cornerstone for the realization of superconducting magnet applications. The critical field arises because of the Copper pair breaking at a limiting field, which is due to the Pauli paramagnetism of the electrons. The maximal possible magnetic field strength for this effect is commonly known as the Pauli paramagnetic limit given as $μ_0 H_{\rm Pauli} \approx 1.86{\rm [T/K]} \cdot T_{\rm c}$ for a weak-coupling BCS superconductor. The violation of this limit is only rarely observed.…
We report the synthesis, crystal structure, and superconductivity of Ti$_4$Ir$_2$O. The title compound crystallizes in an $η$-carbide type structure of the space group $Fd\overline{3}m$ (No. 227), with lattice parameters $a=b=c=11.6194(1)$ Å. The superconducting $T_c$ is found to be 5.1 $\sim$ 5.7 K. Most surprisingly, Ti$_4$Ir$_2$O hosts an upper critical field of 16.45 T, which is far beyond the Pauli paramagnetic limit. Strong coupled superconductivity with evidences for multigap is revealed by the measurements of heat capacity and upper critical field. First-principles calculations suggest…
Superconductivity intrinsic to the intercalated black phosphorus (BP) with a transition temperature Tc of 3.8 K, independent of the intercalant, whether an alkali or an alkaline earth element, has been reported recently by R. Zhang et al. (2017). However, the reported Tc and the field effect on the superconducting (SC) transition both bear great similarities to those for the pure Sn, which is commonly used for BP synthesis under the vapor transport method. We have therefore decided to determine whether a minute amount of Sn is present in the starting high purity BP crystals and whether it is t…
The tetragonal Mo$_5$PB$_2$ compound was recently reported to show superconductivity with a critical temperature up to 9.2 K. In search of evidence for multiple superconducting gaps in Mo$_5$PB$_2$, comprehensive measurements, including magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, heat capacity, and muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements were carried out. Data from both low-temperature superfluid density and electronic specific heat suggest a nodeless superconducting ground state in Mo$_5$PB$_2$. Two superconducting energy gaps $Δ_0$ = 1.02 meV (25%) and 1.49 meV (75%) are …
Hydrogen-rich compounds have been extensively studied both theoretically and experimentally in the quest for novel high-temperature superconductors. Reports on sulfur-hydride attaining metallicity under pressure and exhibiting superconductivity at temperatures as high as 200 K have spurred an intense search for room-temperature superconductors in hydride materials. Recently, compressed phosphine was reported to metallize at pressures above 45 GPa, reaching a superconducting transition temperature (T$_{c}$) of 100 K at 200 GPa. However, neither the exact composition nor the crystal structure of…
We perform a thorough first-principles study on superconductivity in yttrium carbide halide Y$_2$$X_2$C$_2$ ($X$=Cl, Br, I) whose maximum transition temperature ($T_{\rm c}$) amounts to $\sim$10 K. A detailed analysis on the optimized crystal structures reveals that the Y$_2$C$_2$ blocks are compressed uniaxially upon the halogen substitution from Cl, Br to I, contrary to the monotonic expansion of the lattice vectors. With a nonempirical method based on the density functional theory for superconductors within the conventional phonon mechanism, we successfully reproduce the halogen dependence …

The discoveries of superconductivity in the heavily-boron doped semiconductors diamond (C:B) in 2004 and silicon (Si:B) in 2006 have renewed the interest in the physics of the superconducting state of doped semiconductors. Recently, we discovered superconductivity in the closely related ''mixed'' system heavily boron-doped silcon carbide (SiC:B). Interestingly, the latter compound is a type-I superconductor whereas the two aforementioned materials are type-II. In this paper we present an extensive analysis of our recent specific-heat study, as well as the band structure and expected Fermi surf…
The effects of copper doping on the structural and superconducting phase transitions of Ba(Ni$_{1-x}$Cu$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ were studied by examining the resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat. We found an abrupt increase in the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ from 0.6 K in the triclinic phase with less copper ($x$ $\leq$ 0.16) to 2.5-3.2 K in the tetragonal phase with more copper ($x$ $>$ 0.16). The specific-heat data suggested that doping-induced phonon softening was responsible for the enhanced superconductivity in the tetragonal phase. All of these obse…
Superconducting materials with a nontrivial band structure are potential candidates for topological superconductivity. Here, by combining muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) methods with theoretical calculations, we investigate the superconducting and topological properties of the rock-salt-type compounds NbC and TaC (with$T_c$ = 11.5 and 10.3 K, respectively). At a macroscopic level, the magnetization and heat-capacity measurements under applied magnetic field provide an upper critical field of 1.93 and 0.65 T for NbC and TaC, respectively. The low-temperature superfluid density, determ…
Pressure-induced superconductivity and structural phase transitions in phosphorous (P) are studied by resistivity measurements under pressures up to 170 GPa and fully $ab-initio$ crystal structure and superconductivity calculations up to 350 GPa. Two distinct superconducting transition temperature (T$_{c}$) vs. pressure ($P$) trends at low pressure have been reported more than 30 years ago, and for the first time we are able to reproduce them and devise a consistent explanation founded on thermodynamically metastable phases of black-phosphorous. Our experimental and theoretical results form a …
Polycrystalline samples and single crystals of SmFeAs1-xPxO1-y were synthesized and grown employing different synthesis methods and annealing conditions. Depending on the phosphorus and oxygen content, the samples are either magnetic or superconducting. In the fully oxygenated compounds the main impact of phosphorus substitution is to suppress the Néel temperature TN of the spin density wave (SDW) state, and to strongly reduce the local magnetic field in the SDW state, as deduced from muon spin rotation measurements. On the other hand the superconducting state is observed in the oxygen deficie…
Binary hydrides formed by the pnictogens of phosphorus, arsenic and antimony are studied at high pressures using first principles methods. Stable structures are predicted and their electronic, vibrational and superconducting properties are investigated. We predict that SbH$_{4}$ and AsH$_{8}$ will be high-temperature superconductors at megabar pressures, with critical temperatures in excess of 100 K. The highly symmetric hexagonal SbH$_{4}$ phase is predicted to be stabilized above about 150 GPa, which is readily achievable in diamond anvil cell experiments. We find that all phosphorus hydride…
We study within a first-principle approach the band structure, vibrational modes and electron-phonon coupling in boron, aluminum and phosphorus doped silicon in the diamond phase. Our results provide evidences that the recently discovered superconducting transition in boron doped cubic silicon can be explained within a standard phonon-mediated mechanism. The importance of lattice compression and dopant related stretching modes are emphasized. We find that T$_C$ can be increased by one order of magnitude by adopting aluminum doping instead of boron.
We report the realization of superconductivity by an isovalent doping with phosphorus in LaFeAsO. X-ray diffraction shows that, with the partial substitution of P for As, the Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers are squeezed while the La$_2$O$_2$ layers are stretched along the c-axis. Electrical resistance and magnetization measurements show emergence of bulk superconductivity at $\sim$10 K for the optimally-doped LaFeAs$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$O ($x=0.25\sim0.3$). The upper critical fields at zero temperature is estimated to be 27 T, much higher than that of the LaFePO superconductor. The occurrence of superconductivit…
For two-dimensional superconductors, the high stability in ambient conditions is critical for experiments and applications. Few-layer antimonene can be non-degradative over a couple of months, which is superior to the akin black phosphorus. Based on the anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg theory and maximally-localised Wannier functions, this work predicts that electron-doping and Ca-intercalation can transform $β$-Sb bilayer from a semimetal to a superconductor. However, the stability of antimonene bilayer in air trends to be decreased due to the electron doping. To overcome this drawback, two kind…
Epitaxial semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures are promising as a platform for gate-tunable superconducting electronics. Thus far, the superconducting properties in such hybrid systems have been predicted based on simplified hybridization models which neglect the electronic structure that can arise at the interface. Here, we demonstrate that the hybrid electronic structure derived at the interface between semiconducting black phosphorus and atomically thin films of lead can drastically modify the superconducting properties of the thin metallic film. Using ultra-low temperature scannin…
Two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) are an emerging class of atomically-thin superconductors, whose characteristics are highly prone to tailoring by surface functionalization. Here we explore the use of hydrogen adatoms to enhance phonon-mediated superconductivity in MXenes, based on first-principles calculations combined with Eliashberg theory. We first demonstrate the stability of three different structural models of hydrogenated Mo- and W-based MXenes. Particularly high critical temperatures of over 30 K are obtained for hydrogenated Mo$_2$N and W$_2$N. Several m…
The exploration of superconductivity dominated by structural units is of great interest in condense matter physics. MgB2, consisting of graphene-like B, becomes a typical representative of traditional superconductors. Phosphorus demonstrates diverse non-planar motifs through sp3 hybridization in allotropes and phosphides. Here, we report that a pressure-stabilized LaP2, isostructural to MgB2, shows superconductivity with a predicted Tc of 22.2 K, which is the highest among already known transition metal phosphides. Besides electron-phonon coupling of graphene-like P, alike the role of B layer …
Two-dimensional (2D) superconductors have attracted great attention in recent years due to the possibility of new phenomena in lower dimensions. With many bulk transition metal carbides being well-known conventional superconductors, here we perform first-principles calculations to evaluate the possible superconductivity in a 2D monolayer Mo$_2$C. Three candidate structures (monolayer alpha-Mo$_2$C, 1T MXene-Mo$_2$C, and 2H MXene-Mo$_2$C) are considered and the most stable form is found to be the 2H MXene-Mo$_2$C. Electronic structure calculations indicate that both unpassivated and passivated …
We present the results of a crystal structure determination using neutron powder diffraction as well as the superconducting properties of the rare-earth sesquicarbide La2C3 (Tc ~ 13.4 K) by means of specific heat and upper critical field measurements. From the detailed analysis of the specific heat and a comparison with ab-initio electronic structure calculations, a quantitative estimate of the electron-phonon coupling strength and the logarithmic average phonon frequency is made. The electron-phonon coupling constant is determined to λ~ 1.35. The electron-phonon coupling to low energy phonon …
We report our $^{23}$Na and $^{75}$As NMR studies on isovalent phosphorus-doped NaFeAs$_{0.8}$P$_{0.2}$ ($T_c=$ 33 K) single crystals. Our data suggest a dramatic enhancement of the electron density of states on the Fermi surface, and a large residual electron density of state below $T_c$. However, evidence of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations is shown by the spin-lattice relaxation rate. The penetration depth, revealed from $^{23}$Na NMR linewidth, follows the universal Uemura relation in iron pnictides. These observations suggest that the correlation effects are still important for the sup…
The recently reported nickel carbide superconductor, body centered tetragonal $I4/mmm$ Th$_2$NiC$_2$ with T$_c$ = 8.5 K increasing to 11.2 K upon alloying Th with Sc, is found to have very fine structure in its electronic spectrum, according to density functional based first principles calculations. The filled Ni 3d band complex is hybridized with C $2p$ and Th character to and through the Fermi level ($E_f$), and a sharply structured density of states arises only when spin-orbit coupling is included, which splits a zone-center degeneracy leaving a very flat band edge lying at the Fermi level.…
Arsenic doping in silicides has been much less studied compared with phosphorus. In this study, superconductivity is successfully induced by As doping in Mo$_5$Si$_3$. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) reaches 7.7 K, which is higher than those in previously known W$_5$Si$_3$-type superconductors. Mo$_5$Si$_2$As is a type-II BCS superconductor with upper and lower critical fields of 6.65 T and 22.4 mT, respectively. In addition, As atoms are found to selectively take the 8$h$ sites in Mo$_5$Si$_2$As. The emergence of superconductivity is possibly due to the shift of Fermi level…
The search for a superconductor with non-s-wave pairing is important not only for understanding unconventional mechanisms of superconductivity but also for finding new types of quasiparticles such as Majorana bound states. Materials with both topological band structure and superconductivity are promising candidates as $p+ip$ superconducting states can be generated through pairing the spin-polarized topological surface states. In this work, the electronic and phonon properties of the superconductor molybdenum carbide (MoC) are studied with first-principles methods. Our calculations show that no…
We investigated the effects of phosphorus substitution on the shape of the Tc(x) dome in 1111-type SmFeAs1-yPyO1-xHx (0 < x < 0.5). Hydride ion substitution of oxide sites (O2- -> H-) exerts a chemical pressure effect, i.e., a structural reduction of the Pn-Fe-Pn angle α (Pn = P, As) and also dopes electrons into the FePn layer to induce superconductivity. Isovalent phosphorus substitution (P3- -> As3-) can induce only a chemical pressure effect, i.e., an increase of α for La-substitution of Sm-sites. As y increases from 0.0 to 0.5, the single Tc dome gradually splits into two domes, similar t…
Carbon can exist as isolated dumbbell, one-dimensional (1D) chain, 2D plane, and 3D network in carbon solids or carbon-based compounds, which attributes to its rich chemical binding way, including sp-, sp2-, and sp3-hybridized bonds. Sp2 hybridizing carbon always captures special attention due to its unique physical and chemical property. Here, using evolutionary algorithm in conjunction with ab initio method, we found that under compression, dumbbell carbon in CaC2 can be polymerized firstly into one-dimensional chain and then into ribbon and further into two dimensional graphite sheet at hig…
The Ti$_2$Ni and the related $η$-carbide structure are known to exhibit various intriguing physical properties. The Ti$_2$Ni structure with the cubic space group $Fd\bar{3}m$ is surprisingly complex, consisting of a unit cell with 96 metal atoms. The related $η$-carbide compounds correspond to a filled version of the Ti$_2$Ni structure. Here, we report on the structure and superconductivity in the $η$-carbide type suboxides Ti$_4$M$_2$O with M = Co, Rh, Ir. We have successfully synthesized all three compounds in single phase form. We find all three compounds to be type-II bulk superconductors …
