Recent studies in the realization of Majorana fermion (MF) quasiparticles have focused on engineering topological superconductivity by combining conventional superconductors and spin-textured electronic materials. We propose an effective model to create unpaired MFs at a honeycomb lattice edge by generalizing a 2-dimensional topologically nontrivial Haldane model and introducing textured pairings. The core idea is to add both the spin-singlet and textured spin-triplet pairings to a pseudospin-state dependent, time-reversal symmetry (TRS) noninvariant honeycomb lattice, and to satisfy generalized "sweet spot" conditions as in the Kitaev chain model. Our model has a gapped superconducting phase and a gapless phase; either phase may have zero or nonzero topological winding numbers. The discriminant that distinguishes those two phases gives a measure of TRS breaking and may have more general implications. Effective Majorana zero modes arise at edges in distinct phases with different degrees of degeneracy. Our theoretical model motivates concepts, such as "textured pairings" and the "strength" of TRS breaking, that may play important roles in future implementation of MFs with cold atoms in optical lattices.
We study the formation of Majorana fermions in honeycomb-lattice structures in the presence of a Zeeman field, Rashba spin-orbit coupling, and in the proximity of an s-wave superconductor. We show that an exact mapping exists between an anisotropic hexagonal-lattice nanoribbon at k = 0 and a one-dimensional chain, for which the existence of Majorana fermions has been extensively discussed. Consequently we can predict the conditions for the emergence of Majorana fermions at the edges of such ribbon, and relate the existence of Majoranas to a band inversion in the bulk band structure. Moreover w…
We study the collective states of interacting non-Abelian anyons that emerge in Kitaev's honeycomb lattice model. Vortex-vortex interactions are shown to lead to the lifting of the topological degeneracy and the energy is discovered to exhibit oscillations that are consistent with Majorana fermions being localized at vortex cores. We show how to construct states corresponding to the fusion channel degrees of freedom and obtain the energy gaps characterizing the stability of the topological low energy spectrum. To study the collective behavior of many vortices, we introduce an effective lattice…
We study the emergence of Majorana zero modes (MZMs) at the ends of a finite double zigzag honeycomb nanoribbon (zHNR). We show that a double zHNR geometry can host spin-polarized MZMs at its ends. We considered a minimal model composed by first nearest neighbor hopping, Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC), p-wave superconducting pairing, and an applied external magnetic field (EMF). The energy spectrum regions with either spin up or down MZMs belong to distinct topological phase transitions characterized by their corresponding winding numbers and can be accessed by tunning the chemical potentia…
Magnetic chains on superconducting systems have emerged as a platform for realization of Majorana bound states (MBSs) in condensed matter systems with possible applications to topological quantum computation. In this work we study the MBSs formed in magnetic chains on two-dimensional honeycomb materials with induced superconductivity. We establish phase diagrams showing the topological regions (where MBSs appear), which are strongly dependent on the spiral angle along the chain of the magnetic moments. In particular, find large regions where the topological phase is robust even at large values…
We investigate the realization of a topological superconductor in a generic bucked honeycomb system equipped with four types of mass-generating terms, where the superconductor gap is introduced by attaching the honeycomb system to an $s$-wave superconductor. Constructing the topological phase diagram, we show that Majorana modes are formed in the phase boundary. In particular, we analyze the honeycomb system with antiferromagnetic order in the presence of perpendicular electric field $E_{z}$. It becomes topological for $|E_{z}|>E_{z}^{\text{cr}}$ and trivial for $|E_{z}|<E_{z}^{\text{cr}}$, wi…
We present a scheme to use physical Majorana quasi-zero modes at each junction of a two-dimensional nanowire network to build a logical Majorana zero mode, the location of which is controllable through gate voltages. The wire-network is a way to realize a proposal by Yang et al. arXiv:1808.04825 to imprint a Kekulé vortex pattern on a honeycomb lattice via gate voltages. We show that a specific type of junction -- other than a naive Y- or T-junction -- is needed to realize, without breaking time-reversal symmetry, an artificial ``graphene'' system with Majorana fermions instead of complex ones…
Motivated by the prospect of attaining Majorana modes at the ends of nanowires, we analyze interacting Majorana systems on general networks and lattices in an arbitrary number of dimensions, and derive various universal spin duals. Such general complex Majorana architectures (other than those of simple square or other crystalline arrangements) might be of empirical relevance. As these systems display low-dimensional symmetries, they are candidates for realizing topological quantum order. We prove that (a) these Majorana systems, (b) quantum Ising gauge theories, and (c) transverse-field Ising …
We discuss a pairing mechanism in interacting two-dimensional multipartite lattices that intrinsically leads to a second order topological superconducting state with a spatially modulated gap. When the chemical potential is close to Dirac points, oppositely moving electrons on the Fermi surface undergo an interference phenomenon in which the Berry phase converts a repulsive electron-electron interaction into an effective attraction. The topology of the superconducting phase manifests as gapped edge modes in the quasiparticle spectrum and Majorana Kramers pairs at the corners. We present symmet…
In this paper we study the quantum properties of the lattice vacancy in topological band insulators (TBIs) and topological superconductors (TSCs) on honeycomb lattice with particle-hole symmetry. Each vacancy has one zero mode for the Haldane model and two zero modes for the Kane-Mele model. In addition, in TSCs on honeycomb lattice with particle-hole symmetry, we found the existence of the Majorana zero modes around the vacancies. These zero energy modes are protected by particle-hole symmetry of these topological sates.
We study non-centrosymmetric topological superconductivity in correlated doped quantum spin-Hall insulators (QSHI) on honeycomb lattice without inversion symmetry where the intrinsic (Kane-Mele) and Rashba spin-orbit couplings can in general exist. We explore the generic topologically non-trivial superconducting phase diagram of the model system. Over a certain parameter space, the parity-mixing superconducting state with co-existing spin-singlet $d$+$id$ and spin-triplet $p$+$ip$-wave pairing is found. On a zigzag nanoribbon, the parity-mixing superconducting state shows co-existing helical a…
We theoretically address spin chain analogs of the Kitaev quantum spin model on the honeycomb lattice. The emergent quantum spin liquid phases or Anderson resonating valence bond (RVB) states can be understood, as an effective model, in terms of p-wave superconductivity and Majorana fermions. We derive a generalized phase diagram for the two-leg ladder system with tunable interaction strengths between chains allowing us to vary the shape of the lattice (from square to honeycomb ribbon or brickwall ladder). We evaluate the winding number associated with possible emergent (topological) gapless m…
The spectral properties of Kitaev's honeycomb lattice model are investigated both analytically and numerically with the focus on the non-abelian phase of the model. After summarizing the fermionization technique which maps spins into free Majorana fermions, we evaluate the spectrum of sparse vortex configurations and derive the interaction between two vortices as a function of their separation. We consider the effect vortices can have on the fermionic spectrum as well as on the phase transition between the abelian and non-abelian phases. We explicitly demonstrate the $2^n$-fold ground state de…
Exactly solvable lattice models for spins and non-interacting fermions provide fascinating examples of topological phases, some of them exhibiting the localized Majorana fermions that feature in proposals for topological quantum computing. The Chern invariant $ν$ is one important characterization of such phases. Here we look at the square-octagon variant of Kitaev's honeycomb model. It maps to spinful paired fermions and enjoys a rich phase diagram featuring distinct abelian and nonabelian phases with $ν= 0,\pm1,\pm2,\pm3$ and $ \pm4$. The $ν=\pm1 $ and $ν=\pm3$ phases all support localized Ma…
We propose an inhomogeneous open spin ladder, related to the Kitaev honeycomb model, which can be tuned between topological and nontopological phases. In extension of Lieb's theorem, we show numerically that the ground state of the spin ladder is either vortex free or vortex full. We study the robustness of Majorana end states (MES) which emerge at the boundary between sections in different topological phases and show that while the MES in the homogeneous ladder are destroyed by single-body perturbations, in the presence of inhomogeneities at least two-body perturbations are required to destab…
The effect of multiple topological transitions for electron-hole excitations is discovered in full shell proximitized semiconducting nanowires with trapped superconducting vortices, recently shown to be a promising platform for the realization of Majorana states at moderate longitudinal magnetic fields. The mechanism of such multiple transitions is uncovered and explained to be governed by the interplay of normal and Andreev reflections from the shell and by the textured spin-orbit coupling inside the semiconductor. The extensive analysis of emerging propagating and Majorana-type evanescent qu…
We present an exactly solvable spin-orbital model based on the Gamma-matrix generalization of a Kitaev-type Hamiltonian. In the presence of small magnetic fields, the model exhibits a critical phase with a spectrum characterized by topologically protected Fermi points. Upon increasing the magnetic field, Fermi points carrying opposite topological charges move toward each other and annihilate at a critical field, signaling a phase transition into a gapped phase with trivial topology in three dimensions. On the other hand, by subjecting the system to a staggered magnetic field, an effective time…
Topological phases have spurred unprecedented abilities for sound, light and matter engineering and recent progress has shown how waves not only confine at the interfaces between topologically distinct insulators, but in the form of zero-dimensional non-propagating states bound to defects or corners. Majorana-like bound states have recently been observed in man-made Kekulé textured lattices. We show here how the acoustic version of the associated Jackiw-Rossi vortex embodies a Thouless pumping process, in which the spectral flow of corner states adiabatically merge with the said Majorana-like …
We propose a path for constructing diverse interacting spin systems from topological nanowires in Cooper Boxes. The wires are grouped into a three-wire building block called an 'hexon', consisting of six Majorana zero modes. In the presence of a strong charging energy, the hexon becomes a Cooper box equivalent to two spin-$1/2$ degrees of freedom. By considering arrays of hexons and controlling the distances between the various wires, one can tune the Hamiltonian governing the low-energy spins, thus providing a route for controllably constructing interacting spin systems in one- and two-dimens…
We establish the appearance of a qualitatively new type of spin liquid with emergent exceptional points when coupling to the environment. We consider an open system of the Kitaev honeycomb model generically coupled to an external environment. In extended parameter regimes, the Dirac points of the emergent Majorana fermions from the original model are split into exceptional points with Fermi arcs connecting them. In glaring contrast to the original gapless phase of the honeycomb model which requires time-reversal symmetry, this new phase is stable against all perturbations. The system also disp…
Topological orders have been intrinsically identified in a class of systems such as fractional quantum Hall states and spin liquids. Accessing such states often requires extreme conditions such as low temperatures, high magnetic fields, pure samples, etc. Another approach would be to engineer the topological orders in systems with more accessible ingredients. In this work, we present networks of Majorana bound states, which are currently accessible in semiconductor nanowires proximitized to conventional superconductors, and show that the effective low-energy theory is topologically ordered. We…
We present a two-dimensional lattice model for quantum spin-1/2 for which the low-energy limit is governed by four flavors of strongly interacting Majorana fermions. We study this low-energy effective theory using two alternative approaches. The first consists of a mean-field approximation. The second consists of a Random Phase approximation (RPA) for the single-particle Green's functions of the Majorana fermions built from their exact forms in a certain one-dimensional limit. The resulting phase diagram consists of two competing chiral phases, one with Abelian and the other with non-Abelian t…
We study the stability of nucleated topological phases that can emerge when interacting non-Abelian anyons form a regular array. The studies are carried out in the context of Kitaev's honeycomb model, where we consider three distinct types of perturbations in the presence of a lattice of Majorana mode binding vortices -- spatial anisotropy of the vortices, dimerization of the vortex lattice and local random disorder. While all the nucleated phases are stable with respect to weak perturbations of each kind, strong perturbations are found to result in very different behavior. Anisotropy of the v…
We use the SU(2) slave fermion approach to study a tetrahedral spin 1/2 chain, which is a one-dimensional generalization of the two dimensional Kitaev honeycomb model. Using the mean field theory, coupled with a gauge fixing procedure to implement the single occupancy constraint, we obtain the phase diagram of the model. We then show that it matches the exact results obtained earlier using the Majorana fermion representation. We also compute the spin-spin correlation in the gapless phase and show that it is a spin liquid. Finally, we map the one-dimensional model in terms of the slave fermions…
Following the recent realization of an artificial version of Graphene in the electronic surface states of copper with judiciously placed carbon monoxide molecules inducing the honeycomb lattice symmetry (K. K. Gomes et al., Nature 483, 306 (2012)), we demonstrate that these can be used to realize a vortex in a Kekule texture of the honeycomb lattice. The Kekule texture is mathematically analogous to a superconducting order parameter, opening a spectral gap in the massless Dirac point spectrum of the Graphene structure. The core of a vortex in the texture order parameter, supports subgap states…
We show that networks of topological nanowires can realize the physics of exactly solvable Kitaev spin models with two-body interactions. This connection arises from the description of the low-energy theory of both systems in terms of a tight-binding model of Majorana modes. In Kitaev spin models the Majorana description provides a convenient representation to solve the model, whereas in an array of topological nanowires it arises, because the physical Majorana modes localized at wire ends permit tunnelling between wire ends and across different Josephson junctions. We explicitly show that an …
An interacting bosonic model of Kitaev type is proposed on the three-dimensional diamond lattice. Similarly to the two-dimensional Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice which exhibits both Abelian and non-Abelian phases, the model has two (``weak'' and ``strong'' pairing) phases. In the weak pairing phase, the auxiliary Majorana hopping problem is in a topological superconducting phase characterized by a non-zero winding number introduced in A. P. Schnyder, S. Ryu, A. Furusaki, and A. W. W. Ludwig, arXiv:0803.2786. The topological character of the weak pairing phase is protected by a discrete …
