Vortices and Other Topological Solitons in Dense Quark Matter

In this review, we discuss various properties of topological solitons in dense QCD matter, with a particular emphasis on the CFL phase exhibiting superfluidity and superconductivity, and their phenomenological implications in terms of the effective field theories such as the Ginzburg-Landau theory, the chiral Lagrangian, or the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation. The most fundamental topological excitations are non-Abelian vortices, which are 1/3 quantized superfluid vortices and color magnetic flux tubes. On vortices and rings in extended Abelian models

A numerical search for straight superconducting vortices in a U(1) model with a Ginzburg-Landau potential containing a cubic term, is presented. Such vortices exist in a small numerically determined region. The reasons of their existence in that narrow region of the parameter space, as well as of their instability in the rest of the parameter space, are explained. Then, the results of a numerical search for axially symmetric solitons in a U(1)\times U(1) model with higher derivative terms, which is based on Physica D 228 (2007) 159, are presented and discussed.

Six-dimensional regularization of chiral gauge theories

We propose a regularization of four dimensional chiral gauge theories using six-dimensional Dirac fermions. In our formulation, we consider two different mass terms having domain-wall profiles in the fifth and the sixth directions, respectively. A Weyl fermion appears as a localized mode at the junction of two different domain-walls. One domain-wall naturally exhibits the Stora-Zumino chain of the anomaly descent equations, starting from the axial U(1) anomaly in six-dimensions to the gauge anomaly in four-dimensions. On vortices and solitons in Goldstone and abelian-Higgs models

In the present work we discuss non-linear physics problems such as Nielsen-Olesen strings, superconducting bosonic straight strings and static vortex rings. We start with a toy model. We search for antiperiodic solitons of the Goldstone model on a circle. Such models provide the basis as well as useful hints for further research on three-dimensional more realistic problems. We proceed with a full research on a $U(1)$ model which admits stable straight string solutions in a small, numerically determined area. Elasticity tetrads, mixed axial-gravitational anomalies, and 3+1d quantum Hall effect

For two-dimensional topological insulators, the integer and intrinsic (without external magnetic field) quantum Hall effect is described by the gauge anomalous (2+1)-dimensional [2+1d] Chern-Simons (CS) response for the background gauge potential of the electromagnetic U(1) field. The Hall conductance is given by the quantized prefactor of the CS term, which is a momentum-space topological invariant. Tensor supercurrent in QCD

An external Abelian magnetic field excites in the QCD vacuum a tensor supercurrent that represents the tensor polarization of the chiral condensate. This tensor supercurrent can be deduced from the chiral lagrangian in the presence of anomalies; a similar tensor supercurrent emerges in rotating systems at finite chemical potential. We discuss the microscopic origin of this supercurrent and argue that it screens the instanton--anti-instanton $I\bar{I}$ molecules in the QCD vacuum, similarly to the vector supercurrent screening Abrikosov vortices in a superconductor.
