Diphoton channel provides a clean signature in searches for new physics. In this paper, we discuss a connection between the diphoton channel ($γγ$) and triboson channels ($Zγγ$, $ZZγ$, $WWγ$) imposed by the $SU(2)_{L}\times U(1)_{Y}$ symmetry of the Standard Model (SM) in certain classes of models. To illustrate this idea we choose a simple model that has all these channels. In this model, the same physics can give rise to $γ+$MET instead of $γγ$ and 2 bosons plus missing energy instead of 3-boson channels. We analyze existing constraints and previous searches and show that channels $WWγ$ and especially $Zγ+$MET have a potential to discover new physics at the LHC.
We show that the relatively small but coincident excesses observed around 2 TeV in the ATLAS Run 1 and Run 2 hadronic diboson searches --- when a cut on the number of tracks in the fat jets is not applied --- and the null results of all remaining high-mass diboson searches are compatible with the decay of a triboson resonance $R$ into $WZ$ plus an extra particle $X$. These decays can take place via new neutral ($Y^0$) or charged ($Y^\pm$) particles, namely $R \to Y^0 \, W$, with $Y^0 \to Z X$, or $R \to Y^\pm Z$, with $Y^\pm \to W X$. An obvious candidate for such intermediate particle is a ne…
The ATLAS excess in fat jet pair production is kinematically compatible with the decay of a heavy resonance into two gauge bosons plus an extra particle. This hypothesis would explain the absence of such a large excess in the analogous CMS analysis of fat dijet final states, as well as the negative results of diboson resonance searches in the semi-leptonic decay modes. If the extra particle is the Higgs boson, this hypothesis might also explain -statistical fluctuations aside- why the CMS search for WH resonances in the semi-leptonic channel finds some excess while in the fully hadronic one it…
In this work we point out that the apparent diphoton excess initially presented by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations could have originated from a radion in the bulk Higgs scenario within a warped extra dimension. In this scenario the couplings of the radion to massive gauge bosons are suppressed, allowing it to evade existing searches. In the presence of mixing with the Higgs, due to the strong constraints from diboson searches, only points near what we denominate the alignment region were able to explain the diphoton signal and evade other experimental constraints. In light of the new measurem…
New colorless electroweak (EW) charged spin-1 particles with mass of a few TeV arise in numerous extensions of the Standard Model (SM). Decays of such a vector into a pair of SM particles, either fermions or EW bosons, are well studied. Many of these models have an additional scalar, which can lead to (and even dominate in certain parameter regions) a novel decay channel for the heavy vector particles instead - into a SM EW boson and the scalar, which subsequently decays into a SM EW boson pair. In this work, we focus on the scalar being relatively heavy, roughly factor of two lighter than the…
Heavy vector-like quarks coupled to a scalar $S$ will induce a coupling of this scalar to gluons and possibly (if electrically charged) photons. The decay of the heavy quark into $Sq$, with $q$ being a Standard Model quark, provides, if kinematically allowed, new channels for heavy quark searches. Inspired by naturalness considerations, we consider the case of a vector-like partner of the top quark. For illustration, we show that a singlet partner can be searched for at the 13$\,$TeV LHC through its decay into a scalar resonance in the $2γ+\ell + X$ final states, especially if the diphoton bra…
After the discovery of a Higgs boson, the measurements of its properties are at the forefront of research. The determination of the associated production of a Higgs boson and a pair of top quarks is of particular importance as the ttH Yukawa coupling is large and thus an excellent probe for physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). For the complete LHC Run-1 dataset, the combined ATLAS and CMS signal strength (defined as the ratio of measured cross-section to the SM prediction) was $μ=2.3^{+0.7}_{-0.6}$, which indicated a mild excess with respect to the SM expectation. The results of the ttH sea…
We review the current status of searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model in the diphoton channel at the LHC and estimate the reach with future collected data. We perform a model independent analysis based on an effective field theory approach and different production mechanisms. As an illustrative example, we apply our results to a scenario of minimal composite dynamics.
In a class of new physics models, an extended Higgs sector and new CP-violating sources are simultaneously present in order to explain the baryon asymmetry in the Universe. The aim of this work is to study the implications of beyond the Standard Model (SM) CP violation for the searches of heavy scalars at the LHC. In particular, we focus on the diphoton channel searches in the CP-violating two-Higgs-doublet model (CPV 2HDM). To have a sizable CPV in the scalar sector, the two heavy neutral scalars in 2HDM tend to be nearly degenerate. The theoretical constraints of unitarity, perturbativity an…
We identify the bounds on supersymmetric effective operators beyond MSSM, from heavy diphoton resonance ($X$) negative searches at the LHC, where $X$ is identified with the neutral CP-even (odd) $H$ ($A$) or both (mass degenerate). While minimal supersymmetric models (MSSM, etc) comply with the data, a leading effective operator of $d=6$ can contribute significantly to diphoton production $σ\sim 1$ fb, well above its MSSM value and in conflict with recent data. Both the $b\bar b$ and $gg$ production mechanisms of $H$ and $A$ can contribute comparably to this. We examine the dependence of the d…
We derive a new bound on diphoton resonances using inclusive diphoton cross section measurements at the LHC, in the so-far poorly constrained mass range between the Upsilon and the SM Higgs. This bound sets the current best limit on axion-like particles that couple to gluons and photons, for masses between 10 and 65 GeV. We also estimate indicative sensitivities of a dedicated diphoton LHC search in the same mass region, at 7, 8 and 14 TeV. As a byproduct of our analysis, we comment on the axion-like particle interpretation of the CMS excesses in low-mass dijet and diphoton searches.
Extensions of the Standard Model Higgs sector with electroweak charged scalars can possess exotic `Higgs' bosons with vanishing or suppressed couplings to Standard Model fermions. These `fermiophobic' scalars, which cannot be produced via gluon fusion, are constrained by LHC measurements of the 125 GeV Higgs boson to have a small vacuum expectation value. This implies that vector boson fusion and associated vector boson production are in general suppressed rendering conventional Higgs searches insensitive. However, Drell-Yan Higgs pair production, which is not present in the SM, can be sizeabl…
In this paper we study the direct production of the diphoton resonance $X$ which has been suggested by 2015 data at the LHC, in $e^+e^-\to Xγ/XZ$ processes at the ILC. We derive an analytic expression for the scattering amplitudes of these processes, and present a comprehensive analysis for determining the properties of $X$ at the ILC. A realistic simulation study for $e^+e^-\to Xγ$ is performed based on the full detector simulation to demonstrate the capabilities of the ILC experiment. Complementary to the searches at the LHC, prospects of the measurement of the absolute values of production …
Searches for diphoton resonance have been shown to be very useful in discovering new heavy spin-0 or spin-2 particles. Supposing that a new heavy particle shows up in the diphoton channel and it points to a spin-0 boson, it can be allowed to have a small mixing with the observed 125 GeV Higgs-like boson. We borrow the example of the 750 GeV particles hinted with 3.2 fb$^{-1}$ data at the end of 2015 (though it did not appear in the 2016 data) to perform an analysis of "double Higgcision". In this work, we perform a complete Higgs-signal strength analysis in the Higgs-portal type framework, usi…
We propose that the SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) (aka G221) models could provide us a 750 GeV scalar resonance that may account for the diphoton excess observed at the LHC while satisfying present collider constraints. The neutral component of the $SU(2)_R$ scalar multiplet can be identified as the 750 GeV scalar. In the lepto-phobic and fermio-phobic G221 models the new charged gauge boson W' could be light, and we find that the diphoton decay width could be dominated by the loop contribution from the $W'$. To initiate gluon fusion production, it is necessary to extend the G221 symmetry to the Pati-S…
Motivated by the recently reported diphoton resonance at 750 GeV, we study a new axion-like bosonic portal model of dark matter physics. When the resonance particle is identified as the pseudo-scalar mediator, via which the standard model sector would interact with the dark matter sector, the data from collider physics would provide profound implications to dark matter phenomenology. In this paper, we first identify the preferred parameter space of the suggested portal model from the results of the LHC run with $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, and then we examine the dark matter signature taking into accoun…
Assuming a heavy electroweak singlet scalar, which couples to the Standard Model gauge bosons only through loop-induced couplings, SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y gauge invariance imposes interesting patterns on its decays into electroweak gauge bosons, which are dictated by only two free parameters. Therefore experimental measurements on any two of the four possible electroweak channels would determine the remaining two decay channels completely. Furthermore, searches in the WW/ZZ channels probe a complimentary region of parameter space from searches in the gamma-gamma/Z-gamma channels. We derive a model-in…
Diphoton searches at high invariant mass are an integral part of the experimental high energy frontier. Using the analyses of the 750\,GeV diphoton resonance as a case study, we examine the methodology currently employed by the experimental analyses in estimating the dominant standard model backgrounds. We assess the dependence of the significance associated with the excess on the background modeling. In particular, we show that close to the high energy tails of the distributions, estimates of the jet faking backgrounds relying on functional extrapolations or Monte Carlo estimates of the chall…

The top partner as a hallmark of the Littlest Higgs model with $T$-parity (LHT model) has been extensively searched for during the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Run-1. With the increasing mass limits on the top partner, the single production of the top partner will be dominant over the pair production. Under the constraints from the Higgs data, the electroweak precision observables and $R_b$, we find that the mass of $T$-even top partner ($T_+$) has to be heavier than 730 GeV. Then, we investigate the observability of the single $T$-even top partner production through the process $pp \to T_+ j$ …
Motivated by the recent update on LHC searches for narrow and broad resonances decaying into diphotons we reconsider the possibility that the observed peak in the invariant mass spectrum at M_{γγ} = 750 GeV originates from a closed string (possibly axionic) excitation φ(associated with low mass scale string theory) that has a coupling with gauge kinetic terms. We reevaluate the production of φby photon fusion to accommodate recent developments on additional contributions to relativistic light-light scattering. We also study the production of φvia gluon fusion. We show that for both a narrow an…
A hint of a new resonance at a mass of 750\,GeV has been observed in the diphoton channel of LHC Run 2 at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. The signal rate is too large to interpret it as a new Higgs boson in the context of weakly-coupled renormalizable models. One way is to reduce its total decay rate, which is possible if the CP-even heavy Higgs boson $H^0$ in the aligned two Higgs doublet model becomes top-phobic. To ensure sufficient gluon fusion production, we introduce vector-like quarks (VLQ). The Higgs precision data as well as the exclusion limits from no excesses in other 8 TeV LHC searches of $Zγ$…
In new physics searches involving photons at the LHC, one challenge is to distinguish scenarios with isolated photons from models leading to "photon jets". For instance, in the context of the 750 GeV diphoton excess, it was pointed out that a true diphoton resonance $S \to γγ$ can be mimicked by a process of the form $p p \to S \to a a \to 4γ$, where $S$ is a new scalar with a mass of 750 GeV and $a$ is a light pseudoscalar decaying to two collinear photons. Photon jets can be distinguished from isolated photons by exploiting the fact that a large fraction of photons convert to an $e^+e^-$ pai…
We propose a simple mechanism for copiously producing heavy Higgs bosons with enhanced decay rates to two photons at the LHC, within the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM). In the CP-conserving limit of the theory, such a diphoton resonance may be identified with the heavier CP-even $H$ boson, whose gluon-fusion production and decay into two photons are enhanced by loops of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark $\tilde{t}_1$ when its mass $m_{\tilde{t}_1}$ happens to be near the $\tilde{t}^*_1\tilde{t}_1$ threshold, i.e.~for $m_{\tilde{t…
Processes with three external electroweak gauge boson allow for a measurement of triple and quartic gauge couplings. They can be used to constrain anomalous gauge couplings, where new physics might predominantly couple to electroweak gauge bosons. In this paper we chose a class of such processes where we consider two photons and an additional vector boson in the final state. As additional vector boson we consider either a third photon or a $W$ or $Z$ boson. For the latter two cases we assume a leptonic decay of the boson. We calculate the next-to-leading order QCD and electroweak corrections t…
We study the recently reported excess in the diphoton resonance search by ATLAS and CMS. We investigate the available parameter space in the combined run-1 and run-2 diphoton data and study its interpretation in terms of a singlet scalar field which possibly mixes with the Standard Model Higgs boson. We show that the mixing angle is already strongly constrained by high-mass Higgs searches in the diboson channel, and by Higgs coupling measurements. While a broad resonance is slightly favored, we argue that the signal is consistent with a narrow-width singlet which couples to colored and electro…

The resonance $S$ at $\sim 750$ GeV in the diphoton channel observed by ATLAS and CMS, if it holds up, is almost certainly the ($S$)cion of a larger dynasty in a UV completion that may very well be connected to the hierarchy problem. At this stage, however, an effective field theory framework provides a useful way to parametrize searches for this resonance in other channels. Assuming that the excess is due to a new scalar or pseudoscalar boson, we study associated production of $S$ ("$S$-strahlung") at the LHC and propose searches in several clean channels like $γγ\ell\ell$, $γγ\ell\eslash$ an…
We explore the phenomenology of a model of monopolium based on an electromagnetic dual formulation of Zwanziger and lattice gauge theory. The monopole is assumed to have a finite-sized inner structure based on a 't Hooft-Polyakov like solution, with the magnetic charge uniformly distributed on the surface of a sphere. The monopole and anti-monopole potential becomes linear plus Coulomb outside the sphere, analogous to the Cornell potential utilised in the study of quarkonium states. Discovery of a resonance feature in the diphoton channel as well as in a higher multiplicity photon channel woul…
The presence of charged Higgs bosons is a generic prediction of multiplet extensions of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs sector. Focusing on the Two-Higgs-Doublet-Model (2HDM), we discuss the charged Higgs boson collider phenomenology in the theoretically and experimentally viable parameter space. While almost all existing experimental searches at the LHC target the fermionic decays of charged Higgs bosons, we point out that the bosonic decay channels -- especially the decay into a non-SM-like Higgs boson and a $W$ boson -- often dominate over the fermionic channels. Moreover, we revisit two genu…
This White Paper is an input to the ongoing discussion about the extension and refinement of simplified Dark Matter (DM) models. Based on two concrete examples, we show how existing simplified DM models (SDMM) can be extended to provide a more accurate and comprehensive framework to interpret and characterise collider searches. In the first example we extend the canonical SDMM with a scalar mediator to include mixing with the Higgs boson. We show that this approach not only provides a better description of the underlying kinematic properties that a complete model would possess, but also offers…
The stringent constraints from the direct searches for exotic scalars at the LHC as well as indirect bounds from flavor physics measurements have imposed severe restrictions on the parameter space of new physics models featuring extended Higgs sectors. In the Type-II 2HDM, this implies a lower bound on the charged Higgs masses of $\cal O$(600 GeV). In this work we analyze the phenomenology of a Z3HDM in the alignment limit focusing on the impact of flavor physics constraints on its parameter space. We show that the couplings of the two charged Higgs bosons in this model feature an additional s…
