Using the thin-layer approach, we derive the effective equation for the electromagnetic wave propagating along a space curve. We find intrinsic spin-orbit, extrinsic spin-orbit and extrinsic orbital angular momentum and intrinsic orbital angular momentum couplings induced by torsion, which can lead to geometric phase, spin and orbital Hall effects. And we show the helicity inversion induced by curvature that can convert the right-handed circularly polarized electromagnetic wave into left-handed polarized one, vice verse. Finally, we demonstrate that the gauge invariance of the effective dynamics is protected by the geometrically induced gauge potential.
Topological structures of electromagnetic fields could give access to nontrivial light-matter interactions and additional degrees of freedom for information and energy transfer. A characteristic example of such electromagnetic excitations are space-time non-separable single-cycle pulses, the exact solutions of Maxwell equation of toroidal topology predicted by Hellwarth and Nouchi in 1996 and recently observed experimentally. Here we introduce a new family of electromagnetic excitation of toroidal topology with increasing complexity in which the Hellwarth-Nouchi pulse is just the simplest memb…
Dual scatterers preserve the helicity of an incident field, whereas antidual scatterers flip it completely. In this setting of linear electromagnetic scattering theory, we provide a completely general proof on the non-existence of passive antidual scatterers. However, we show that scatterers fulfilling the refractive index matching condition flip the helicity of the fields very efficiently without being in contradiction with the law of energy conservation. Moreover, we find that this condition is paired with the impedance matching condition in several contexts of electromagnetism and, in parti…
In this paper, a new counter-propagation waves coupling mechanism is proposed which is expected to realize an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like effect. Comparing the travelling waves coupling mechanism (see J. Mod. Opt. 2015,62:313-320 [9]) with the counter-propagating waves coupling mechanism, we find out that the transparency window breadths of transmission spectra are greatly enhanced and the corresponding phase shift spectra possess a flat profile or a square profile. Our numerical simulated results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis. The EIT-like effect …
Understanding light-matter interaction at the nanoscale by observation of fine details of electromagnetic fields is achieved by bringing nanoscale probes into the nearfield of light sources, capturing information that is lost in the far field. Although metal coated probes are often used for nearfield microscopy, they strongly perturb the electromagnetic fields under study. Here, through experiment and simulation, we detail light collection by uncoated fiber probes, which minimize such perturbation. Second-harmonic light from intensely-irradiated sub-wavelength sub-surface features was imaged t…
The form of the energy-momentum tensor when a quasimonochromatic field propagates into and through an antireflection-coated, sourceless, transparent, continuous, linear magneto-dielectric medium, initially at rest in the local frame, remains controversial. The Minkowski energy-momentum tensor is the main component of the electromagnetic conservation law. It has been known for over a century that the electromagnetic conservation law is unsound as evidenced by alternative energy-momentum tensors that have been proposed to ameliorate known physical deficiencies (violation of conservation of angul…
Crossover from Electromagnetically Induced Transparency to Autler-Townes Splitting in Open V-Type Molecular Systems
Rev. A 83,063419(2011)]最近报道的实验结果吻合得很好。
We derive the Euler-Heisenberg solutions that describe electromagnetic waves propagating through very intense uniform magnetic or electric background, with the effective metric approach. We first explore the case of a magnetic background: as a result of the interaction between the wave and the background there is birefringence and a longitudinal electric field component arises. The two phase velocities depend on the intensity of the external magnetic field and on the polarization of the wave; phase velocities can be slowed down up to the order of hundred thousandths for fields $B/B_{\rm cr} <<…
We study the dispersion of electromagnetic waves in a spatially dispersive metamaterial with Lorentz-like dependence of principal permittivity tensor components on the respective components of the wave vector performing the analysis of isofrequency contours. The considered permittivity tensor describes triple non-connected wire medium. It is demonstrated that the metamaterial has four optic axes in the frequency range below artificial plasma frequency. The directions of the optical axes do not depend on frequency and coincide with the diagonals of quadrants. The metamaterial supports two propa…
A low loss propagating electromagnetic wave is shown to exist at a gradual interface between two lossy conductive media. The electromagnetic frequency range of this phenomenon may span from UV optics to RF range. In particular, it is demonstrated that such a surface wave may be guided by a seafloor-seawater interface and it may be used in radio communication and imaging underwater. Similar surface waves may also be guided by various tissue boundaries inside a human body. For example, such surface wave solutions may exist at planar interfaces between skull bones and grey matter inside a human h…
