Local observables in generic periodically driven closed quantum systems are known to relax to values described by periodic infinite temperature ensembles. At the same time, ergodic static systems exhibit anomalous thermalization of local observables and satisfy a modified version of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH), when disorder is present. This raises the question, how does the introduction of disorder affect relaxation in periodically driven systems? In this work, we analyze this problem by numerically studying transport and thermalization in an archetypal example. We find that thermalization is anomalous and is accompanied by subdiffusive transport with a disorder dependent dynamical exponent. Distributions of matrix elements of local operators in the eigenbases of a family of effective time-independent Hamiltonians, which describe the stroboscopic dynamics of such systems, show anomalous departures from predictions of ETH signaling that only a modified version of ETH is satisfied. The dynamical exponent is shown to be related to the scaling of the variance of these distributions with system size.
We investigate the role of symmetries in determining the random matrix class describing quantum thermalization in a periodically driven many body quantum system. Using a combination of analytical arguments and numerical exact diagonalization, we establish that a periodically driven `Floquet' system can be in a different random matrix class to the instantaneous Hamiltonian. A periodically driven system can thermalize even when the instantaneous Hamiltonian is integrable. A Floquet system that thermalizes in general can display integrable behavior at commensurate driving frequencies. When the in…
We study the many-body localization transition in one-dimensional Hubbard chains using exact diagonalization and quantum chaos indicators. We also study dynamics in the delocalized (ergodic) and localized phases and discuss thermalization and eigenstate thermalization, or the lack thereof, in such systems. Consistently within the indicators and observables studied, we find that ergodicity is very robust against disorder, namely, even in the presence of weak Hubbard interactions the disorder strength needed for the system to localize is large. We show that this robustness might be hidden by fin…
We investigate the transition induced by disorder in a periodically-driven one-dimensional model displaying quantized topological transport. We show that, while instantaneous eigenstates are necessarily Anderson localized, the periodic driving plays a fundamental role in delocalizing Floquet states over the whole system, henceforth allowing for a steady state nearly-quantized current. Remarkably, this is linked to a localization/delocalization transition in the Floquet states of a one dimensional driven Anderson insulator, which occurs for periodic driving corresponding to a nontrivial loop in…
Thermalization of systems described by the discrete non-linear Schrödinger equation, in the strong disorder limit, is investigated both theoretically and numerically. We show that introducing correlations in the disorder potential, while keeping the "effective" disorder fixed (as measured by the localization properties of wavepacket dynamics), strongly facilitate the thermalization process and lead to a standard grand canonical distribution of the probability norms associated to each site
In this work, we present a new approach to disordered, periodically driven (Floquet) quantum many-body systems based on flow equations. Specifically, we introduce a continuous unitary flow of Floquet operators in an extended Hilbert space, whose fixed point is both diagonal and time-independent, allowing us to directly obtain the Floquet modes. We first apply this method to a periodically driven Anderson insulator, for which it is exact, and then extend it to driven many-body localized systems within a truncated flow equation ansatz. In particular we compute the emergent Floquet local integral…
We study numerically how the energy spreads over a finite disordered nonlinear one-dimensional lattice, where all linear modes are exponentially localized by disorder. We establish emergence of dynamical thermalization, characterized as an ergodic chaotic dynamical state with a Gibbs distribution over the modes. Our results show that the fraction of thermalizing modes is finite and grows with the nonlinearity strength.
We explore the physics of a Chern insulator subjected to a two step Floquet drive. We analytically obtain the phase diagram and show that the system can exhibit different topological phases characterized by presence and chirality of edge-modes in the two bulk gaps of the Floquet quasienergy spectrum, around $0$ and $π$. We find that the phase of the system depends on the mean but not on the amplitude of the drive. The bulk topological invariants characterizing the phases can be extracted by mapping the unitary evolution within a time period to an energetically trivial but topologically non-tri…
We use field-theoretic methods to explore the statistics of eigenfunctions of the Floquet operator for a large family of Floquet random quantum circuits. The correlation function of the quasienergy eigenstates is calculated and shown to exhibit random matrix circular unitary ensemble statistics, which is consistent with the analogue of Berry's conjecture for quantum circuits. This quantity determines all key metrics of quantum chaos, such as the spectral form factor and thermalizing time-dependence of the expectation value of an arbitrary observable. It also allows us to explicitly show that t…
Although most studies of strongly correlated systems away from equilibrium have focused on clean systems, it is well known that disorder may significantly modify observed properties in various nontrivial ways. The nonequilibrium interplay of interaction and disorder in these systems thus requires further investigation. In the present paper, we use the recently developed nonequilibrium DMFT+CPA embedding scheme, that combines both the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) and the coherent potential approximation (CPA) nonequilibrium extensions, to characterize the relaxation and the thermalization…
We explore how disorder and interactions conspire in lattice models with sequentially activated hopping to produce novel k-body (or many-body) localized phases. Specifically, we show that when disorder is added to the set of interacting floquet models considered in [Wampler and Klich arXiv:2209.09180], regions in parameter space near the special points where classical-like dynamics emerge are stabilized prethermally (or via many-body localization in some cases) producing new families of interesting phases. We also find that this disordered system exhibits novel phases in regions of parameter s…
We explore thermalization and quantum dynamics in a one-dimensional disordered SU(2)-symmetric Floquet model, where a many-body localized phase is prohibited by the non-abelian symmetry. Despite the absence of localization, we find an extended nonergodic regime at strong disorder where the system exhibits nonthermal behaviors. In the strong disorder regime, the level spacing statistics exhibit neither a Wigner-Dyson nor a Poisson distribution, and the spectral form factor does not show a linear-in-time growth at early times characteristic of random matrix theory. The average entanglement entro…
Statistical mechanics underlies our understanding of macroscopic quantum systems. It is based on the assumption that out-of-equilibrium systems rapidly approach their equilibrium states, forgetting any information about their microscopic initial conditions. This fundamental paradigm is challenged by disordered systems, in which a slowdown or even absence of thermalization is expected. We report the observation of critical thermalization in a three dimensional ensemble of $\sim 10^6$ electronic spins coupled via dipolar interactions. By controlling the spin states of nitrogen vacancy color cent…
We study the strong disorder regime of Floquet topological systems in dimension two, that describe independent electrons on a lattice subject to a periodic driving. In the spectrum of the Floquet propagator we assume the existence of an interval in which all states are localized--a mobility gap. First we generalize the relative construction from spectral to mobility gap, define a bulk index for an infinite sample and an edge index for the half-infinite one and prove the bulk-edge correspondence. Second, we consider completely localized systems where the mobility gap is the whole circle, and de…
We investigate thermalization dynamics of a driven dipolar many-body quantum system through the stability of discrete time crystalline order. Using periodic driving of electronic spin impurities in diamond, we realize different types of interactions between spins and demonstrate experimentally that the interplay of disorder, driving and interactions leads to several qualitatively distinct regimes of thermalization. For short driving periods, the observed dynamics are well described by an effective Hamiltonian which sensitively depends on interaction details. For long driving periods, the syste…
The gaps separating two different states widely exist in various physical systems: from the electrons in periodic lattices to the analogs in photonic, phononic, plasmonic systems, and even quasicrystals. Recently, a thermalization gap, an inaccessible range of photon statistics, was proposed for light in disordered structures [Nat. Phys. 11, 930 (2015)], which is intrinsically induced by the disorder-immune chiral symmetry and can be reflected by the photon statistics. The lattice topology was further identified as a decisive role in determining the photon statistics when the chiral symmetry i…
Motivated by experimental observations of time-symmetry breaking behavior in a periodically driven (Floquet) system, we study a one-dimensional spin model to explore the stability of such Floquet discrete time crystals (DTCs) under the interplay between interaction and the microwave driving. For intermediate interactions and high drivings, from the time evolution of both stroboscopic spin polarization and mutual information between two ends, we show that Floquet DTCs can exist in a prethermal time regime without the tuning of strong disorder. For much weak interactions the system is a symmetry…
We study the energy absorption in real time of a disordered quantum spin chain subjected to coherent monochromatic periodic driving. We determine characteristic fingerprints of the well-known ergodic (Floquet-ETH for slow driving/weak disorder) and many-body localized (Floquet-MBL for fast driving/strong disorder) phases. In addition, we identify an intermediate regime, where the energy density of the system -- unlike the entanglement entropy a local and bounded observable -- grows logarithmically slowly over a very large time window.
We study spectral properties and the dynamics after a quench of one-dimensional spinless fermions with short-range interactions and long-range random hopping. We show that a sufficiently fast decay of the hopping term promotes localization effects at finite temperature, which prevents thermalization even if the classical motion is chaotic. For slower decays, we find that thermalization does occur. However, within this model, the latter regime falls in an unexpected universality class, namely, observables exhibit a power-law (as opposed to an exponential) approach to their thermal expectation v…
We investigate the localization properties of driven models that exhibit a sub-extensive number of extended states in the static setting. We consider instances where the extended modes are or are not protected by topological considerations. To this end, we contrast the strongly driven disordered lowest Landau level, which we refer to as the random Landau model (RLM), with the random dimer model (RDM); the latter also has a sub-extensive set of delocalized modes in the middle of the spectrum whose origin is not topological. We map the driven models on to a higher dimensional effective model and…
We study the unitary dynamics and the thermalization properties of free-fermion-like Hamiltonians after a sudden quantum quench, extending the results of S. Ziraldo et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 247205 (2012)]. With analytical and numerical arguments, we show that the existence of a stationary state and its description with a generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) depend crucially on the observable considered (local versus extensive) and on the localization properties of the final Hamiltonian. We present results on two one-dimensional (1D) models, the disordered 1D fermionic chain with long-range ho…
We construct and classify chiral topological phases in driven (Floquet) systems of strongly interacting bosons, with finite-dimensional site Hilbert spaces, in two spatial dimensions. The construction proceeds by introducing exactly soluble models with chiral edges, which in the presence of many-body localization (MBL) in the bulk are argued to lead to stable chiral phases. These chiral phases do not require any symmetry, and in fact owe their existence to the absence of energy conservation in driven systems. Surprisingly, we show that they are classified by a quantized many-body index, which …
Periodically driven systems, also known as Floquet systems, can realize symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases that cannot be found in equilibrium. Here, we seek to understand the effects of strong disorder on such SPT phases, working with a one-dimensional Floquet system belonging to Altland-Zirnbauer class BDI. Using the transfer matrix method, we find that the disordered system hosts an array of trivial, topological, and Floquet topological phases. We then explore the phase diagram in the case of uniformly distributed bonds. Our analytic results are confirmed by a numeric computation o…
Periodically driven, or Floquet, disordered quantum systems have generated many unexpected discoveries of late, such as the anomalous Floquet Anderson insulator and the discrete time crystal. Here, we report the emergence of an entire band of multifractal wavefunctions in a periodically driven chain of non-interacting particles subject to spatially quasiperiodic disorder. Remarkably, this multifractality is robust in that it does not require any fine-tuning of the model parameters, which sets it apart from the known multifractality of $critical$ wavefunctions. The multifractality arises as the…
Symmetries play a central role in single-particle localization. Recent research focused on many-body localized (MBL) systems, characterized by new kind of integrability, and by the area-law entanglement of eigenstates. We investigate the effect of a non-Abelian $SU(2)$ symmetry on the dynamical properties of a disordered Heisenberg chain. While $SU(2)$ symmetry is inconsistent with the conventional MBL, a new non-ergodic regime is possible. In this regime, the eigenstates exhibit faster than area-law, but still a strongly sub-thermal scaling of entanglement entropy. Using exact diagonalization…
The many-body localized (MBL) phase is characterized by a complete set of quasi-local integrals of motion and area-law entanglement of excited eigenstates. We study the effect of non-Abelian continuous symmetries on MBL, considering the case of $SU(2)$ symmetric disordered spin chains. The $SU(2)$ symmetry imposes strong constraints on the entanglement structure of the eigenstates, precluding conventional MBL. We construct a fixed-point Hamiltonian, which realizes a non-ergodic (but non-MBL) phase characterized by eigenstates having logarithmic scaling of entanglement with the system size, as …
Periodically driven quantum systems provide a novel and versatile platform for realizing topological phenomena. Among these are analogs of topological insulators and superconductors, attainable in static systems; however, some of these phenomena are unique to the periodically driven case. Here, we show that disordered, periodically driven systems admit an "anomalous" two dimensional phase, whose quasi-energy spectrum consists of chiral edge modes that coexist with a fully localized bulk - an impossibility for static Hamiltonians. This unique situation serves as the basis for a new topologicall…
Many-body localization provides a mechanism to avoid thermalization in isolated interacting quantum systems. The breakdown of thermalization may be complete, when all eigenstates in the many-body spectrum become localized, or partial, when the so-called many-body mobility edge separates localized and delocalized parts of the spectrum. Previously, De Roeck \textit{et al.}[arXiv:1506.01505] suggested a possible instability of the many-body mobility edge in energy density. The local ergodic regions -- so called "bubbles" -- resonantly spread throughout the system, leading to delocalization. In or…
Clean and interacting periodically driven quantum systems are believed to exhibit a single, trivial "infinite-temperature" Floquet-ergodic phase. In contrast, here we show that their disordered Floquet many-body localized counterparts can exhibit distinct ordered phases delineated by sharp transitions. Some of these are analogs of equilibrium states with broken symmetries and topological order, while others - genuinely new to the Floquet problem - are characterized by order and non-trivial periodic dynamics. We illustrate these ideas in driven spin chains with Ising symmetry.
We theoretically study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics in momentum space of a weakly interacting disordered Bose gas launched with a finite velocity. In the absence of interactions, coherent multiple scattering gives rise to a background of diffusive particles, on top of which a coherent backscattering interference emerges. We revisit this scenario in the presence of interactions, using a diagrammatic quantum transport theory. We find that the dynamics is governed by coupled kinetic equations describing the thermalization of the diffusive and coherent components of the gas. This phenomenon lea…
Disorder in a 1D quantum lattice induces Anderson localization of the eigenstates and drastically alters transport properties of the lattice. In the original Anderson model, the addition of a periodic driving increases, in a certain range of the driving's frequency and amplitude, localization length of the appearing Floquet eigenstates. We go beyond the uncorrelated disorder case and address the experimentally relevant situation when spatial correlations are present in the lattice potential. Their presence induces the creation of an effective mobility edge in the energy spectrum of the system.…
We generalize the definition of localization length to disordered systems driven by a time-periodic potential using a Floquet-Green function formalism. We study its dependence on the amplitude and frequency of the driving field in a one-dimensional tight-binding model with different amounts of disorder in the lattice. As compared to the autonomous system, the localization length for the driven system can increase or decrease depending on the frequency of the driving. We investigate the dependence of the localization length with the particle's energy and prove that it is always periodic. Its ma…
The interplay of fluctuations, ergodicity, and disorder in many-body interacting systems has been striking attention for half a century, pivoted on two celebrated phenomena: Anderson localization predicted in disordered media, and Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) recurrence observed in a nonlinear system. The destruction of Anderson localization by nonlinearity and the recovery of ergodicity after long enough computational times lead to more questions. This thesis is devoted to contributing to the insight of the nonlinear system dynamics in and out of equilibrium. Focusing mainly on the GP latt…
The anomalous Floquet Anderson insulator (AFAI) is a two dimensional periodically driven system in which static disorder stabilizes two topologically distinct phases in the thermodynamic limit. The presence of a unit-conducting chiral edge mode and the essential role of disorder induced localization are reminiscent of the integer quantum Hall (IQH) effect. At the same time, chirality in the AFAI is introduced via an orchestrated driving protocol, there is no magnetic field, no energy conservation, and no (Landau level) band structure. In this paper we show that in spite of these differences th…
