We study numerically how the energy spreads over a finite disordered nonlinear one-dimensional lattice, where all linear modes are exponentially localized by disorder. We establish emergence of dynamical thermalization, characterized as an ergodic chaotic dynamical state with a Gibbs distribution over the modes. Our results show that the fraction of thermalizing modes is finite and grows with the nonlinearity strength.
Thermalization of systems described by the discrete non-linear Schrödinger equation, in the strong disorder limit, is investigated both theoretically and numerically. We show that introducing correlations in the disorder potential, while keeping the "effective" disorder fixed (as measured by the localization properties of wavepacket dynamics), strongly facilitate the thermalization process and lead to a standard grand canonical distribution of the probability norms associated to each site
We study the many-body localization transition in one-dimensional Hubbard chains using exact diagonalization and quantum chaos indicators. We also study dynamics in the delocalized (ergodic) and localized phases and discuss thermalization and eigenstate thermalization, or the lack thereof, in such systems. Consistently within the indicators and observables studied, we find that ergodicity is very robust against disorder, namely, even in the presence of weak Hubbard interactions the disorder strength needed for the system to localize is large. We show that this robustness might be hidden by fin…
We investigate thermalization dynamics of a driven dipolar many-body quantum system through the stability of discrete time crystalline order. Using periodic driving of electronic spin impurities in diamond, we realize different types of interactions between spins and demonstrate experimentally that the interplay of disorder, driving and interactions leads to several qualitatively distinct regimes of thermalization. For short driving periods, the observed dynamics are well described by an effective Hamiltonian which sensitively depends on interaction details. For long driving periods, the syste…
Local observables in generic periodically driven closed quantum systems are known to relax to values described by periodic infinite temperature ensembles. At the same time, ergodic static systems exhibit anomalous thermalization of local observables and satisfy a modified version of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH), when disorder is present. This raises the question, how does the introduction of disorder affect relaxation in periodically driven systems? In this work, we analyze this problem by numerically studying transport and thermalization in an archetypal example. We find tha…
Statistical mechanics underlies our understanding of macroscopic quantum systems. It is based on the assumption that out-of-equilibrium systems rapidly approach their equilibrium states, forgetting any information about their microscopic initial conditions. This fundamental paradigm is challenged by disordered systems, in which a slowdown or even absence of thermalization is expected. We report the observation of critical thermalization in a three dimensional ensemble of $\sim 10^6$ electronic spins coupled via dipolar interactions. By controlling the spin states of nitrogen vacancy color cent…
Although most studies of strongly correlated systems away from equilibrium have focused on clean systems, it is well known that disorder may significantly modify observed properties in various nontrivial ways. The nonequilibrium interplay of interaction and disorder in these systems thus requires further investigation. In the present paper, we use the recently developed nonequilibrium DMFT+CPA embedding scheme, that combines both the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) and the coherent potential approximation (CPA) nonequilibrium extensions, to characterize the relaxation and the thermalization…
The gaps separating two different states widely exist in various physical systems: from the electrons in periodic lattices to the analogs in photonic, phononic, plasmonic systems, and even quasicrystals. Recently, a thermalization gap, an inaccessible range of photon statistics, was proposed for light in disordered structures [Nat. Phys. 11, 930 (2015)], which is intrinsically induced by the disorder-immune chiral symmetry and can be reflected by the photon statistics. The lattice topology was further identified as a decisive role in determining the photon statistics when the chiral symmetry i…
We study the unitary dynamics and the thermalization properties of free-fermion-like Hamiltonians after a sudden quantum quench, extending the results of S. Ziraldo et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 247205 (2012)]. With analytical and numerical arguments, we show that the existence of a stationary state and its description with a generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) depend crucially on the observable considered (local versus extensive) and on the localization properties of the final Hamiltonian. We present results on two one-dimensional (1D) models, the disordered 1D fermionic chain with long-range ho…
We study spectral properties and the dynamics after a quench of one-dimensional spinless fermions with short-range interactions and long-range random hopping. We show that a sufficiently fast decay of the hopping term promotes localization effects at finite temperature, which prevents thermalization even if the classical motion is chaotic. For slower decays, we find that thermalization does occur. However, within this model, the latter regime falls in an unexpected universality class, namely, observables exhibit a power-law (as opposed to an exponential) approach to their thermal expectation v…
Symmetries play a central role in single-particle localization. Recent research focused on many-body localized (MBL) systems, characterized by new kind of integrability, and by the area-law entanglement of eigenstates. We investigate the effect of a non-Abelian $SU(2)$ symmetry on the dynamical properties of a disordered Heisenberg chain. While $SU(2)$ symmetry is inconsistent with the conventional MBL, a new non-ergodic regime is possible. In this regime, the eigenstates exhibit faster than area-law, but still a strongly sub-thermal scaling of entanglement entropy. Using exact diagonalization…
We explore thermalization and quantum dynamics in a one-dimensional disordered SU(2)-symmetric Floquet model, where a many-body localized phase is prohibited by the non-abelian symmetry. Despite the absence of localization, we find an extended nonergodic regime at strong disorder where the system exhibits nonthermal behaviors. In the strong disorder regime, the level spacing statistics exhibit neither a Wigner-Dyson nor a Poisson distribution, and the spectral form factor does not show a linear-in-time growth at early times characteristic of random matrix theory. The average entanglement entro…
Do nonlinear waves destroy Anderson localization? Computational and experimental studies yield subdiffusive nonequilibrium wave packet spreading. Chaotic dynamics and phase decoherence assumptions are used for explaining the data. We perform a quantitative analysis of the nonequilibrium chaos assumption, and compute the time dependence of main chaos indicators - Lyapunov exponents and deviation vector distributions. We find a slowing down of chaotic dynamics, which does not cross over into regular dynamics up to the largest observed time scales, still being fast enough to allow for a thermaliz…
The subject of this study is the long-time equilibration dynamics of a strongly disordered one-dimensional chain of coupled weakly anharmonic classical oscillators. It is argued that chaos in this system has a very particular spatial structure: it can be viewed as a dilute gas of chaotic spots. Each chaotic spot corresponds to a stochastic pump which drives the Arnold diffusion of the oscillators surrounding it, thus leading to their relaxation and thermalization. The most important mechanism of relaxation at long distances is provided by random migration of the chaotic spots along the chain, …
The interplay of fluctuations, ergodicity, and disorder in many-body interacting systems has been striking attention for half a century, pivoted on two celebrated phenomena: Anderson localization predicted in disordered media, and Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou (FPUT) recurrence observed in a nonlinear system. The destruction of Anderson localization by nonlinearity and the recovery of ergodicity after long enough computational times lead to more questions. This thesis is devoted to contributing to the insight of the nonlinear system dynamics in and out of equilibrium. Focusing mainly on the GP latt…
We study the chaotic behavior of multidimensional Hamiltonian systems in the presence of nonlinearity and disorder. It is known that any localized initial excitation in a large enough linear disordered system spreads for a finite amount of time and then halts forever. This phenomenon is called Anderson localization (AL). What happens to AL when nonlinearity is introduced is an interesting question which has been considered in several studies over the past decades. However, the characteristics and the asymptotic fate of such evolutions still remain an issue of intense debate due to their comput…
We reveal the generic characteristics of wave packet delocalization in two-dimensional nonlinear disordered lattices by performing extensive numerical simulations in two basic disordered models: the Klein-Gordon system and the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We find that in both models (a) the wave packet's second moment asymptotically evolves as $t^{a_m}$ with $a_m \approx 1/5$ ($1/3$) for the weak (strong) chaos dynamical regime, in agreement with previous theoretical predictions [S.~Flach, Chem.~Phys.~{\bf 375}, 548 (2010)], (b) chaos persists, but its strength decreases in time $t…
We investigate the stability of an Anderson localized chain to the inclusion of a single finite interacting thermal seed. This system models the effects of rare low-disorder regions on many-body localized chains. Above a threshold value of the mean localization length, the seed causes runaway thermalization in which a finite fraction of the orbitals are absorbed into a thermal bubble. This `partially avalanched' regime provides a simple example of a delocalized, non-ergodic dynamical phase. We derive the hierarchy of length scales necessary for typical samples to exhibit the avalanche instabil…
Dynamical localization is the analog of Anderson localization in momentum space, where the system's energy saturates and the single-particle wave-functions are exponentially localized in momentum space. In the presence of interactions, in the context of a periodically kicked Bose gas, it has been argued that dynamical localization persists. Focusing on the Tonks (strongly interacting) regime, we show that the many-body dynamically localized phase is effectively thermal, a clear deviation from the breaking of ergodicity observed in standard many-body localized systems. We relate the effective t…
A computation of the dynamical structure factor of topologically disordered systems, where the disorder can be described in terms of euclidean random matrices, is presented. Among others, structural glasses and supercooled liquids belong to that class of systems. The computation describes their relevant spectral features in the region of the high frequency sound. The analytical results are tested with numerical simulations and are found to be in very good agreement with them. Our results may explain the findings of inelastic X-ray scattering experiments in various glassy systems.
We study the dynamics of macroscopic observables such as the magnetization and the energy per degree of freedom in Ising spin models on random graphs of finite connectivity, with random bonds and/or heterogeneous degree distributions. To do so we generalize existing implementations of dynamical replica theory and cavity field techniques to systems with strongly disordered and locally tree-like interactions. We illustrate our results via application to the dynamics of e.g. $\pm J$ spin-glasses on random graphs and of the overlap in finite connectivity Sourlas codes. All results are tested again…
In this work we develop the theory of the Loschmidt echo and dynamical phase transitions in non-interacting strongly disordered Fermi systems after a quench. In finite systems the Loschmidt echo displays zeros in the complex time plane that depend on the random potential realization. Remarkably, the zeros coalesce to form a 2D manifold in the thermodynamic limit, atypical for 1D systems, crossing the real axis at a sharply-defined critical time. We show that this dynamical phase transition can be understood as a transition in the distribution function of the smallest eigenvalue of the Loschmid…
Many-body localization (MBL) addresses the absence of thermalization in interacting quantum systems, with non-ergodic high-energy eigenstates behaving as ground states, only area-law entangled. However, computing highly excited many-body eigenstates using exact methods is very challenging. Instead, we show that one can address high-energy MBL physics using ground-state methods, which are much more amenable to many efficient algorithms. We find that a localized many-body ground state of a given interacting disordered Hamiltonian $\mathcal{H}_0$ is a very good approximation for a high-energy eig…
We propose an explanation for the quadratic dependence on the momentum $Q$, of the broadening of the acoustic excitation peak recently found in the study of the dynamic structure factor of many real and simulated glasses. We ascribe the observed $Q^2$ law to the spatial fluctuations of the local wavelength of the collective vibrational modes, in turn produced by the dishomegeneity of the inter-particle elastic constants. This explanation is analitically shown to hold for 1-dimensional disordered chains and satisfatorily numerically tested in both 1 and 3 dimensions.
We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of a disordered quantum system consisting of harmonic oscillators in a $d$-dimensional lattice. If the system is sufficiently localized, we show that, starting from a broad class of initial product states that are associated with a tiling (decomposition) of the $d$-dimensional lattice, the dynamical evolution of entanglement follows an area law in all times. Moreover, the entanglement bound reveals a dependency on how the subsystems are located within the lattice in dimensions $d\geq 2$. In particular, the entanglement grows with the maximum degree of the …
Dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) is a tool that allows to analyze the stochastic dynamics of $N$ interacting degrees of freedom in terms of a self-consistent $1$-body problem. In this work, focusing on models of ecosystems, we present the derivation of DMFT through the dynamical cavity method, and we develop a method for solving it numerically. Our numerical procedure can be applied to a large variety of systems for which DMFT holds. We implement and test it for the generalized random Lotka-Volterra model, and show that complex dynamical regimes characterized by chaos and aging can be captur…
Combining the self-consistent theory of localization and the dynamical mean-field theory, we present a theoretical approach capable of describing both self-trapping of charge carriers during the process of polaron formation and disorder-induced Anderson localization. By constructing random samples for the local density of states (LDOS) we analyze the distribution function for this quantity and demonstrate that the typical rather than the mean LDOS is a natural measure to distinguish between itinerant and localized states. Significant polaron effects on the mobility edge are found.
We study the two-dimensional paramagnetic Anderson-Hubbard model using an extension of dynamical mean-field theory that allows us to treat disorder and strong electronic correlations on equal footing. We investigate the scaling of the inverse participation ratio at quarter- and half-filling and find a nonmonotonic dependence of the localization length on the interaction strength. We do not find evidence for an insulator-metal transition. The disorder potential becomes unscreened near the Mott transition. Furthermore, strong correlations suppress the Altshuler-Aronov density of states anomaly n…
We generalize the typical medium dynamical cluster approximation to multiband disordered systems. Using our extended formalism, we perform a systematic study of the non-local correlation effects induced by disorder on the density of states and the mobility edge of the three-dimensional two-band Anderson model. We include inter-band and intra-band hopping and an intra-band disorder potential. Our results are consistent with the ones obtained by the transfer matrix and the kernel polynomial methods. We apply the method to K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ with Fe vacancies. Despite the strong vacancy disord…
Understanding quantum dynamics away from equilibrium is an outstanding challenge in the modern physical sciences. It is well known that out-of-equilibrium systems can display a rich array of phenomena, ranging from self-organized synchronization to dynamical phase transitions. More recently, advances in the controlled manipulation of isolated many-body systems have enabled detailed studies of non-equilibrium phases in strongly interacting quantum matter. As a particularly striking example, the interplay of periodic driving, disorder, and strong interactions has recently been predicted to resul…
