We investigate viscous effects on the dynamical evolution of QCD matter during the first-order phase transition, which may happen in heavy-ion collisions. We first obtain the first-order phase transition line in the QCD phase diagram under the Gibbs condition by using the MIT bag model and the hadron resonance gas model for the equation of state of partons and hadrons. The viscous pressure, which corresponds to the friction in the energy balance, is then derived from the energy and net baryon number conservation during the phase transition. We find that the viscous pressure relates to the thermodynamic change of the two-phase state and thus affects the timescale of the phase transition. Numerical results are presented for demonstrations.
A Lagrangian density for viscous quark-gluon plasma has been constructed within the fluid-like QCD framework. Gauge symmetry is preserved for all terms inside the Lagrangian, except for the viscous term. The transition mechanism from point particle field to fluid field, and vice versa, is discussed. The energy momentum tensor that is relevant for the gluonic plasma having the nature of fluid bulk of gluon sea is derived within the model. By imposing conservation law in the energy momentum tensor, shear viscosity appears as extractable from the equation.
We derive an expression for the heavy quark damping rate in hot quark gluon plasma in presence of flow. Here all the bath particles here are out of equilibrium due to the existence of non-zero velocity gradient. The magnetic sector shows similar infrared divergences even after hard thermal loop corrections as one encounters in case of non-viscous plasma. We estimate the first order correction in ($η/s$) for heavy quark damping rate due to the non-zero viscosity of the QCD plasma.
Three current models of QCD in (1+1) dimensions are examined and extended in light-front coordinates. A pion of high momentum is found to have an infinite extent along its direction of motion.
The bottom quark transport coefficients, i.e., drag and diffusion coefficients, have been studied for the collisional and soft gluon radiative processes within the viscous QCD medium. The thermal medium effects are incorporated using the effective fugacity quasiparticle model (EQPM). Both the shear and bulk viscous effects at leading order are embedded through the near-equilibrium distribution functions of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) constituent quasiparticles. The transport coefficients' dependence on the bottom quark's initial momentum and QGP temperature has been investigated. The relative…
The effects of longitudinal bulk viscous pressure on the heavy quark dynamics have been estimated in a strongly magnetized quark-gluon plasma within the Fokker-Planck approach. The bulk viscous modification to the momentum distribution of bulk degrees of freedom has been obtained in the presence of a magnetic field while incorporating the realistic equation of state of the hot magnetized QCD medium. As the magnetic field breaks the isotropy of the medium, the analysis is done along the directions longitudinal and transverse to the field. The longitudinal bulk viscous contribution is seen to ha…
We determine viscosity corrections to the retarded, advanced and symmetric gluon self energies and to the static propagator in the weak-coupling "hard loop" approximation to high-temperature QCD. We apply these results to calculate the imaginary part of the heavy-quark potential which is found to be smaller (in magnitude) than at vanishing viscosity. This implies a smaller decay width of quarkonium bound states in an anisotropic plasma.
We investigate the phase structure of massless three-flavor QCD by extending the Nambu-Jona- Lasinio model to include the effects of confinement and the axial anomaly. We study the interplay between the chiral and diquark condensates induced by the axial anomaly, as well as their relationship with the Polyakov loop, which parameterizes confinement. By minimizing the thermodynamic potential we construct the QCD phase diagram and investigate the possibility of realizing a recently discovered low temperature critical point and an associated BEC-BCS crossover. We also perform a Ginzburg-Landau exp…
Finding the existence and the location of the QCD critical point is one of the main goals of the RHIC beam energy scan program. To make theoretical predictions and corroborate with the experimental data requires modeling the space-time evolution of the matter created in heavy-ion collisions by dynamical models such as the relativistic hydrodynamics with an appropriate Equation of State (EoS). In the present exploratory study, we use a viscous 2+1 dimensional event-by-event (e-by-e) hydrodynamic code at finite baryon densities with two different EoSs (i) Lattice QCD + HRG with a crossover trans…
Momentum sum rule in QCD is widely used at high energy colliders. Although the exact form of the confinement potential energy is not known but the confinement potential energy at large distance $r$ can not rise slower than ${\rm ln}(r)$. In this paper we find that if the confinement potential energy at large distance $r$ rises linearly with $r$ (or faster) then the momentum sum rule in QCD is violated at the high energy colliders if we consider the hadron size as infinite. For finite size hadron we find that the momentum sum rule in QCD is violated at the high energy colliders for any form of …
We make the case that the Coulomb- plus linear quark confinement potential predicted by lattice QCD is an approximation to the exactly solvable trigonometric Rosen-Morse potential that has the property to interpolate between the Coulomb- and the infinite wells. We test the predictive power of this potential in the description of the nucleon (considered as a quark-diquark system) and provide analytic expressions for its mass spectrum and the proton electric form factor. We compare the results obtained in this fashion to data and find quite good agreement. We obtain an effective gluon propagator…
Colormagnetic confinement as a natural component of the QCD confinement is explained and treated in the framework of the Field Correlator Method. For quarks and gluons in hadrons the effects of the colormagnetic confinement are discussed at zero temperature, where it contributes to the spectrum properties and can create its own bound states, while at nonzero temperature in the EoS of the quark gluon plasma the colormagnetic confinement plays a dominating role. Its properties in the QCD thermodynamics are discussed in detail.
The proton spin crisis remains an unsolved problem in physics. In this paper we find that due to the confinement of partons inside the hadron the angular momentum sum rule in QCD is violated. Hence we find that the non-vanishing angular momentum flux contribution of the partons in QCD should be added to the spin and angular momentum of the partons to solve the proton spin crisis.
A hybrid transport approach for the bulk evolution of viscous QCD matter produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions is presented. The expansion of the dense deconfined phase of the reaction is modeled with viscous hydrodynamics while the dilute late hadron gas stage is described microscopically by the Boltzmann equation. The advantages of such a hybrid approach lie in the improved capability of handling large dissipative corrections in the late dilute phase of the reaction, including a realistic treatment of the non-equilibrium hadronic chemistry and kinetic freeze-out. By varying the…
We study confinement and chiral symmetry breaking phase transitions for QCD and supersymmetric QCD. The method is based on some justified assumption regarding the behavior of the Green function relevant for the potential between two charges or a gap equation. We determine the number of flavors at which the transitions to confinement and chiral symmetry breaking take place. We find that whereas for chiral symmetry breaking the results are in perfect agreement with those in the literature for confinement the situation is more complex.
An expression for the exact (nonperturbative) effective action of $N$=1 supersymmetric gauge theories is proposed, supposing, that all particles except for the gauge bosons are massive. Analysis of its form shows, that instanton effects in the supersymmetric theories can lead to the quark confinement. The typical scale of confinement in MSSM QCD, calculated from the first principles, is in agreement with the experimental data. The proposed explanation is quite different from the dual Higgs mechanism.
Numerical results for the calculation of the (rest-frame) $Q\bar{Q}$ potential, for light-front quantized $QCD_{2+1}$ on a $\perp$ lattice are presented. Both in the longitudinal as well as the $\perp$ spatial directions one obtains linear confinement. The resulting potential is almost rotational symmetric.
Continuum strong QCD is the application of models and continuum quantum field theory to the study of phenomena in hadronic physics, which includes; e.g., the spectrum of QCD bound states and their interactions. Herein I provide a Dyson-Schwinger equation perspective, focusing on qualitative aspects of confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in cold, sparse QCD, and also elucidating consequences of the axial-vector Ward-Takahashi identity and features of the heavy-quark limit.
First order quark hadron phase transition is considered in scaling hydrodynamics including the Csernai-Kapusta model of nucleation of hadronic bubbles leading to supercooling. The effect of viscosity on the entropy production is studied in ideal as well as in viscous hydrodynamics with and without supercooling. It is found that the excess entropy produced due to supercooling depends weakly on viscosity.
Quark confinement and the genesis of the constituent quark model are examined in nonperturbative QCD in Coulomb gauge. We employ a self-consistent method to construct a quasiparticle basis and to determine the quasiparticle interaction. The results agree remarkably well with lattice computations. They also illustrate the mechanism by which confinement and constituent quarks emerge, provide support for the Gribov-Zwanziger confinement scenario, clarify several perplexing issues in the constituent quark model, and permit the construction of an improved model of low energy QCD.
In this paper we show that for a nucleon at rest if the quarks and/or antiquarks are in motion inside the nucleon producing chromo-magnetic field then the mass sum rule in QCD is violated when the confinement potential energy at large distance $r$ rises linearly with $r$ (or faster). Hence we find that the mass of the nucleon at rest is not equal to the mass-energy of all the quarks plus antiquarks plus gluons inside the nucleon if there exists chromo-magnetic field inside the nucleon and the confinement potential energy at large distance $r$ rises linearly with $r$ (or faster).
The heavy quark drag and momentum diffusion coefficients in the presence of both the collisional and radiative processes have been studied in a hot viscous QCD medium. The thermal medium effects are incorporated by employing the effective fugacity quasiparticle model based on the lattice QCD equation of state. Viscous effects are embedded into the heavy quark transport through the near-equilibrium distribution functions of the constituent medium particles of the quark-gluon plasma. The viscous corrections to the momentum distributions have been estimated from the effective Boltzmann equation. …
We study in this Letter the origin of the confinement in QCD by analyzing the colour charge of physics states. We derive the colour charge operator in QCD and compare it with the electromagnetic charge operator in QED. It shows that the two charges have very similar structure, but the dynamical properties of the gauge fields are different. The difference between the behaviours of the gauge boson propagator at zero momentum for QCD and that for QED guarantees that there occurs colour confinement in QCD but there is no confinement in QED. We give then a universal relation between the confinement…
Numerical results for the (rest-frame) $Q\bar{Q}$ potential in light-front quantized $QCD_{2+1}$ on a $\perp$ lattice are presented. Both in the longitudinal as well as the $\perp$ spatial directions one obtains linear confinement. The confinement mechanism in light-front QCD depends on the orientation of the external charges: for longitudinally (with respect to the boost direction in the infinite momentum frame) separated quarks, confinement arises from the instantaneous interaction piece in the Hamiltonian while for $\perp$ separated quarks, the confinement mechanism is similar to the one in…
The effective quark Lagrangian is derived from the QCD action by means of averaging over the vacuum fields. In the limit of large N_c and keeping for simplicity the lowest order gluonic correlator one obtains nonlinear equations for the quark propagator, exhibiting scalar confinement. Connection to the quark zero mode density is discussed.
The effects of a thermalized gas of gluons in a q,q bar plasma is investigated. Then the interplay between Debye screening and confinement is analyzed in a simplified model. While the one-gluon exchange gives results very similar, but not equal, to the electric case, the phenomenological introduction of confinement leads to very different results.
By using a new parametrization of the dilaton field and including a cubic term in the bulk scalar potential, we realize linear confinement in both meson and nucleon sectors within the framework of soft-wall AdS/QCD. At the same time this model also correctly incorporate chiral symmetry breaking. We compare our resulting mass spectra with experimental data and find good agreement between them.
We study three subjects on quark confinement in hadrons in SU(3)$_{\rm c}$ lattice QCD. From the accurate lattice calculation for more than 300 different patterns of three-quark (3Q) systems, we find that the static 3Q potential is well described by Y-Ansatz, i.e., the Coulomb plus Y-type linear potential. We also study the multi-quark (4Q, 5Q) potentials in lattice QCD, and find that they are well described by the one-gluon-exchange (OGE) Coulomb plus string-theoretical linear potential, which supports the {\it infrared string picture} even for the multi-quarks. The second subject is a lattic…
The 4q effective Lagrangian and the gap equation are derived for light quarks in the confinement phase of QCD. The modification of the confining string due to finite quark density (chemical quark potential μ) is observed. As a surprising result in a multiquark system with a common string junction an attractive well appears of radius μ/σand of an average depth equal to μ. Possible implications for the density phase transition are discussed.
We demonstrate that the Nambu-Goto string spectroscopy with massless quarks is replicated in highly excited states of the linear vector confinement potential. For deep radial excitations we observe that the Regge slope, spacing between daughter trajectories, and absolute state energies agree with those of the QCD string.
We give another derivation of quark confinement in QCD from the viewpoint of the low-energy effective Abelian gauge theory of QCD obtained via Abelian projection. It is based on the recently discovered Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition in the four-dimensional Abelian gauge theory. Moreover, we show that there exists a critical gauge coupling constant in QCD, above which confinement set in and below which there is no confinement. In a SU(N) gauge theory with $N_f$ flavored fermions, we argue that this leads to a critical value of fermion flavors $N_f^c$ for the confinement as wel…
The confinement mechanism proposed earlier by the author is applied to problem of arising the so-called scale $Λ_{QCD}$ within the framework of QCD. The natural physical assumption consists of that $1/Λ_{QCD}\,\sim\,<r>$ where $<r>$ is a characteristic size of hadron (radius of confinement). The above confinement mechanism allows us to calculate $<r>$ for mesons in terms of quark and gluonic degrees of freedom and this permits to conclude that $Λ_{QCD}$ should slightly change from hadron to hadron.
After a short exposition of field correlators in the QCD vacuum and the recently discovered Casimir scaling phenomenon, the origin of confinement in QCD is discussed and two possible mechanisms are suggested, which can be checked by new lattice measurements. Screening of confinement due to sea quarks is discussed and quantitatively explained. Deconfinement is introduced via the colorelectric field evaporation and the transition temperature Tc is found numerically in good agreement with lattice measurements. The Tc dependence on Nc and nf is also predicted and agrees with the recent lattice dat…
We discuss how the inclusion of singular gauge fields in the partition function for QCD can lead to a domain-like picture for the QCD vacuum by virtue of specific conditions on quantum fluctuations at the singularities. With a simplified model of hyperspherical domain regions with interiors of constant field strength we calculate the basic parameters of the QCD vacuum, the gluon condensate, topological susceptibility, string constant and quark condensate, and briefly discuss confinement of dynamical quarks and gluons.
Monopole and photon contributions to Wilson loops are calculated using Monte-Carlo simulations of SU(2) QCD in the maximally abelian gauge. The string tensions of SU(2) QCD are well reproduced by extended monopole contributions alone.
We consider the effects of the Faddeev-Popov determinant in the Coulomb gauge on the confinement properties of the QCD vacuum. We show that the the determinant is needed to regularize the otherwise divergent functional integrals near the Gribov horizon but still enables large field configurations to generate IR enhanced running coupling. The physical gluon propagator is found to be strongly suppressed in the IR consistent with expectations from lattice gauge calculations.
We review aspects of confinement in the covariant and local description of QCD and discuss to what extend our present knowledge of the infrared behavior of QCD Green functions can support this description. In particular, we emphasize: the positivity violations of transverse gluon and quark states, the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion, and the conditions necessary to avoid the decomposition property for colored clusters. We summarize how these issues relate to the infrared behavior of the propagators in Landau gauge QCD as extracted from solutions to truncated Dyson-Schwinger equations and latt…
The main features of QCD, e.g. confinement, chiral symmetry breaking, Regge trajectories are naturally and economically explained in the framework of the Field Correlator Method (FCM). The same method correctly predicts the spectrum of hybrids and glueballs. When applied to DIS and high-energy scattering it leads to the important role of higher Fock components in the Fock tower of moving hadron, containing primarily gluonic excitations.
The second-order hydrodynamic equations for evolution of shear and bulk viscous pressure have been derived within the framework of covariant kinetic theory based on the effective fugacity quasiparticle model. The temperature-dependent fugacity parameter in the equilibrium distribution function leads to a mean field term in the Boltzmann equation which affects the interactions in the hot QCD matter. The viscous corrections to distribution function, up to second-order in gradient expansion, have been obtained by employing a Chapman-Enskog like iterative solution of the effective Boltzmann equati…
In 1+1 dimensional compact QCD the zero modes of $A^+$ give the theory a non- trivial topological structure. We examine the effects of these topological structures on the confining infrared structure of the theory. We show that the ground state wavefunction of the topological excitation smears the infrared behavior sufficiently to eliminate confinement for some matter currents. We review the work of Franke et.al. which shows that the zero modes of$A^+$ in $QCD_{3+1}$ give rise to instantons. The relation of zero modes of$A^+$.Invited talk at the workshop on "Theory of Hadrons ond Light-Front Q…
After a derivation of low-energy limit of QCD, being this a non-local Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, we are able to show that confinement emerges as a two-loop correction to the gluon propagator. One-gluon exchange is not enough as recently shown in literature about studies on the gluon propagator in the Landau gauge.
We outline a connection between scalar quark confinement, a phenomenologically successful concept heretofore lacking fundamental justification, and QCD. Although scalar confinement does not follow from QCD, there is an interesting and close relationship between them. We develop a simple model intermediate between scalar confinement and the QCD string for illustrative purposes. Finally, we find the bound state masses of scalar, time-component vector, and string confinement analytically through semi-classical quantization.
A general discussion is presented of the possible symmetries responsible for confinement of color and of their evidence in lattice simulations. The consequences on the phase diagram of $QCD$ are also analyzed.
In the bosonized version of two dimensional theories non trivial boundary conditions (topology) play a crucial role. They are inevitable if one wants to describe non singlet states. In abelian bosonization, color is the charge of a topological current in terms of a non-linear meson field. We show that confinement appears as the dynamical collapse of the topology associated with its non trivial boundary conditions.
I propose to reformulate the gauge field theory as the perturbative deformation of a novel topological quantum field theory. It is shown that this reformulation leads to quark confinement in QCD$_4$. Similarly, the fractional charge confinement is also derived in the strong coupling phase of QED$_4$. As a confinement criterion, we use the area decay of the expectation value of the Wilson loop.
The scalar confinement in QCD is shown to produce the nonzero quark condensate for any current quark mass. Mechanisms for the Chiral Symmetry breaking and for the nonzero quark condensates are revealed. For the light and strange flavors the condensates are essentially chiral (proportional to (string tension)$^{3/2}$). The expressions for the quark condensates are obtained as a sum over non-chiral meson states, and, using the operator product expansion, as an explicit expression that involves the confining string tension and the current quark mass. The numerical results are fairly close to the …
An effective monopole action is derived from vacuum configurations after abelian projection in the maximally abelian gauge in $SU(2)$ QCD. Entropy dominance over energy of monopole loops is seen on the renormalized lattice with the spacing $b>b_c\simeq 5.2\times10^{-3} Λ_L^{-1}$ when the physical volume of the system is large enough. QCD confinement may be interpreted as the (dual) Meissner effect due to the monopole condensation.
We study the relation between quark confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. Using lattice QCD formalism, we analytically express the various "confinement indicators", such as the Polyakov loop, its fluctuations, the Wilson loop, the inter-quark potential and the string tension, in terms of the Dirac eigenmodes. In the Dirac spectral representation, there appears a power of the Dirac eigenvalue $λ_n$ such as $λ_n^{N_t-1}$, which behaves as a reduction factor for small $λ_n$. Consequently, since this reduction factor cannot be cancelled, the low-lying Dirac eigenmodes give negligibly sm…
We study confinement-deconfinement phase transition in a holographic soft-wall QCD model. By solving the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar system analytically, we obtain the phase structure of the black hole backgrounds. We then impose probe open strings in such background to investigate the confinement-deconfinement phase transition from different open string configurations under various temperatures and chemical potentials. Furthermore, we study the Wilson loop by calculating the minimal surface of the probing open string world-sheet and obtain the Cornell potential in confinement phase analytically.
We construct a self-consistent holographic QCD model which can realize two most important phenomena of QCD, i.e. chiral symmetry breaking and confinement. The model is formulated in the framework of graviton-dilaton-scalar system, where the dilaton field is of dimension-2 which might be dual to the dimension-2 gluon condensate and can lead to the linear confinement, while the scalar field corresponds to the quark anti-quark condensate and can explain the property of chiral dynamics. Within this framework, both Regge spectra of hadrons and the linear potential between quarks can be accommodated…
We discuss the Casimir scaling hypothesis on the nonperturbative force in terms of the dual superconducting picture of the QCD vacuum by calculating the string tensions of flux tubes associated with static charges in various SU(3) representations in the dual Ginzburg-Landau (DGL) theory.
We discuss how the presence of a squeezed gluon vacuum might lead to quark confinement in the framework of the global colour model of QCD. Using reduced phase space quantization of massive vector theory we construct a Lorentz invariant and colourless squeezed gluon condensate and show that it induces a permanent, nonlocal quark interaction (delta-function in 4-momentum space), which according to Munczek and Nemirovsky might lead to quark confinement. Our approach makes it possible to relate the strength of this effective confining quark interaction to the strength of the physical gluon condens…
An effective Lagrangian approach to describe the dynamics of confinement and symmetry breaking in the process of quark-gluon to hadron conversion is proposed. The deconfined quark and gluon degrees of freedom of the perturbative QCD vacuum are coupled to color neutral condensate fields representing the non-perturbative vacuum with broken scale and chiral symmetry. As a first application the evolution of gluons emitted by a fragmenting high energy $q\bar q$ pair from the perturbative to the non-perturbative regime with confinement is studied. For reasonable parameter choice the solution of the …
Non-equilibrium corrections to the distribution functions of quarks and gluons in a hot and dense QCD medium modify the "hard thermal loops" (HTL). The HTLs determine the retarded, advanced, and symmetric (time-ordered) propagators for gluons with soft momenta as well as the Debye screening and Landau damping mass scales. We compute such corrections to a thermal as well as to a non-thermal fixed point. The screening and damping mass scales are sensitive to the bulk pressure and hence to (pseudo-) critical dynamical scaling of the bulk viscosity in the vicinity of a second-order critical point. …
We provide an analytical derivation of the confinement deconfinement phase transition to QCD in the pure gluon sector at finite temperature within the framework of S U(3) dual QCD formulation. The mechanism of color confinement has been explained by adopting magnetic symmetry to extract magnetic monopoles in a gauge invariant way and produce magnetic condensation of S U(3) dual QCD vacuum which guarantees the dual Meissner effect. The deconfinement phase transition has been described by constructing the effective potential at finite temperature in the imaginary time formalism. The magnetic mon…
Within the picture of quark confinement as due to a \textit{color event horizon}, and of hadronization as an instance of the Unruh radiation for the strong force, we show here that QCD entropy, evaluated by lattice simulations in the region $T_c < T < 1.3 T_c$, is in reasonable agreement with a melting color event horizon.
