We investigate the connection between star formation and molecular gas properties in galaxy mergers at low redshift (z$\leq$0.06). The study we present is based on IRAM 30-m CO(1-0) observations of 11 galaxies with a close companion selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The pairs have mass ratios $\leq$4, projected separations r$_{\mathrm{p}} \leq$30 kpc and velocity separations $Δ$V$\leq$300 km s$^{-1}$, and have been selected to exhibit enhanced specific star formation rates (sSFR). We calculate molecular gas (H$_{2}$) masses, assigning to each galaxy a physically motivated conversion factor $α_{\mathrm{CO}}$, and we derive molecular gas fractions and depletion times. We compare these quantities with those of isolated galaxies from the extended CO Legacy Data base for the GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey sample (xCOLDGASS, Saintonge et al. 2017) with gas quantities computed in an identical way. Ours is the first study which directly compares the gas properties of galaxy pairs and those of a control sample of normal galaxies with rigorous control procedures and for which SFR and H$_{2}$ masses have been estimated using the same method. We find that the galaxy pairs have shorter depletion times and an average molecular gas fraction enhancement of 0.4 dex compared to the mass matched control sample drawn from xCOLDGASS. However, the gas masses (and fractions) in galaxy pairs and their depletion times are consistent with those of non-mergers whose SFRs are similarly elevated. We conclude that both external interactions and internal processes may lead to molecular gas enhancement and decreased depletion times.
Massive quiescent galaxies (MQGs) are thought to have formed stars rapidly at early times followed by a long period of quiescence. The recent discovery of a MQG, ZF-COSMOS-20115 at $z\sim4$, only 1.5 Gyr after the big bang, places new constraints on galaxy growth and the role of feedback in early star formation. Spectroscopic follow-up confirmed ZF-COSMOS-20115 as a MQG at $z=3.717$ with an estimated stellar mass of ${\sim}10^{11}\mathrm{M}_\odot$, showing no evidence of recent star formation. We use the Meraxes semi-analytic model to investigate how ZF-COSMOS-20115 analogues build stellar mas…
We use the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to confirm a connection between dust-obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and galaxy merging. Using a new, volume-limited (z <= 0.08) catalog of visually-selected major mergers and galaxy-galaxy interactions from the SDSS, with stellar masses above 2x10^10 Msun, we find that major mergers (interactions) are 5-17 (3-5) times more likely to have red [3.4]-[4.6] colors associated with dust-obscured or `dusty' AGNs, compared to non-merging galaxies with similar masses. Using published fiber spectral dia…
Mergers are an important aspect of galaxy formation and evolution. We aim to test whether deep learning techniques can be used to reproduce visual classification of observations, physical classification of simulations and highlight any differences between these two classifications. With one of the main difficulties of merger studies being the lack of a truth sample, we can use our method to test biases in visually identified merger catalogues. A convolutional neural network architecture was developed and trained in two ways: one with observations from SDSS and one with simulated galaxies from …
We examine whether galaxy environments directly affect triggering nuclear activity in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) local spiral galaxies using a volume-limited sample with the $r$-band absolute magnitude $M_{r} < -19.0$ and $0.02 < z < 0.055$ selected from the SDSS Data Release 7. To avoid incompleteness of the central velocity dispersion $σ$ of the volume-limited sample and to fix the black hole mass affecting AGN activity, we limit the sample to a narrow $σ$ range of $130$ km s$^{-1}<σ<200$ km s$^{-1}$. We define a variety of environments as a combination of neighbour interactions and loc…
We present the largest, most homogeneous catalogue of merging galaxies in the nearby universe obtained through the Galaxy Zoo project - an interface on the world-wide web enabling large-scale morphological classification of galaxies through visual inspection of images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The method converts a set of visually-inspected classifications for each galaxy into a single parameter (the `weighted-merger-vote fraction,' $f_m$) which describes our confidence that the system is part of an ongoing merger. We describe how $f_m$ is used to create a catalogue of 3003 vis…
We present results from a multi-wavelength analysis searching for multiple AGN systems in nearby (z<0.077) triple galaxy mergers. Combining archival Chandra, SDSS, WISE, and VLA observations, we quantify the rate of nearby triple AGN, as well as investigate possible connections between SMBH accretion and merger environments. Analyzing the multi-wavelength observations of 7 triple galaxy mergers, we find that 1 triple merger has a single AGN (NGC 3341); we discover, for the first time, 4 likely dual AGN (SDSS J1027+1749, SDSS J1631+2352, SDSS J1708+2153, and SDSS J2356-1016); we confirm one tri…

We present an analysis of the active galaxy SDSS J131642.90+175332.5, which is remarkable because all of its narrow emission lines are double-peaked, and because it additionally shows an extra broad component (FHWM ~ 1400 km/s) in most of its forbidden lines, peaking in between the two narrow systems. The peaks of the two narrow systems are separated by 400--500 km/s in velocity space. The spectral characteristics of double-peaked [O III] emission have previously been interpreted as a signature of dual or binary active galactic nuclei (AGNs), among other models. In the context of the binary sc…
We test competing models that aim at explaining the nature of stars in the Milky Way that are well away (|z|$\gtrsim$ 1kpc) from the midplane, the so-called thick disk: the stars may have gotten there through orbital migration, through satellite mergers and accretion, or through heating of pre-existing thin disk stars. Sales et al. (2009) proposed the eccentricity distribution of thick disk stars as a diagnostic to differentiate between these mechanisms. Drawing on SDSS DR7, we have assembled a sample of 34,223 G-dwarfs with 6-D phase-space information and metallicities, and have derived orbit…
Aims. We present the application of a fully connected neural network (NN) for galaxy merger identification using exclusively photometric information. Our purpose is not only to test the method's efficiency, but also to understand what merger properties the NN can learn and what their physical interpretation is. Methods. We created a class-balanced training dataset of 5\,860 galaxies split into mergers and non-mergers. The galaxy observations came from SDSS DR6 and were visually identified in Galaxy Zoo. The 2$\,$930 mergers were selected from known SDSS mergers and the respective non-mergers w…
We use machine learning techniques to classify galaxy merger stages, which can unveil physical processes that drive the star formation and active galactic nucleus (AGN) activities during galaxy interaction. The sample contains 4,690 galaxies from the integral field spectroscopy survey SDSS-IV MaNGA, and can be separated to 1,060 merging galaxies and 3630 non-merging or unclassified galaxies. For the merger sample, there are 468, 125, 293, and 174 galaxies in (1) incoming pair phase, (2) first pericentric passage phase, (3) aproaching or just passing the apocenter, and (4) final coalescence pha…
We report here our finding of two new blueberry galaxies using optical IFU spectroscopic data from the MaNGA survey. Both the blueberries are found to be compact ($\leq$ $1 - 2$ kpc) starburst systems located at the outskirts of Low Surface Brightness (LSB) galaxies. Our blueberries have the lowest stellar masses $\sim$ 10$^{5}$ M$_{\odot}$ amongst the locally known blueberry galaxies. We find a significantly large mean metallicity difference ($\sim$ 0.5 dex) between the blueberry sources and their associated LSBs. Moreover, the radial metallicity gradients in our blueberries are also differen…
We present the first 3D spectroscopic observations of a nearby HI detected poststarburst, or E+A, galaxy, SDSS J230743.41+152558.4, obtained with the VIMOS IFU spectrograph at ESO VLT. Using the NBursts full spectral fitting technique, we derive maps of stellar kinematics, age, and metallicity out to 2-3 half-light radii. Our analysis reveals a large-scale rapidly rotating disc (v_circ = 300km/s) with a positive age gradient (0.6 to 1.5 Gyr), and a very metal-rich central region ([Fe/H]=+0.25 dex). If a merger or interaction is responsible for triggering the starburst, the presence of this und…
We present results from our X-ray analysis of the first systematic search for triple AGN in nearby (z<0.077) triple galaxy mergers. We analyze archival Chandra observations of 7 triple galaxy mergers with BAYMAX (Bayesian Analysis of Multiple AGN in X-rays), fitting each observation with single, dual, and triple X-ray point source models. In doing so, we conclude that 1 triple merger has one X-ray point source (SDSS J0858+1822, although it's unlikely to be an AGN); 5 triple mergers are likely composed of two X-ray point sources (NGC 3341, SDSS J1027+1749, SDSS J1631+2352, SDSS J1708+2153, and …

Double-peaked narrow emission lines in active galactic nucleus (AGN) spectra can be produced by AGN outflows, rotation, or dual AGNs, which are AGN pairs in ongoing galaxy mergers. Consequently, double-peaked narrow AGN emission lines are useful tracers of the coevolution of galaxies and their supermassive black holes, as driven by AGN feedback and AGN fueling. We investigate this concept further with follow-up optical longslit observations of a sample of 95 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) galaxies that have double-peaked narrow AGN emission lines. Based on a kinematic analysis of the longslit…
Kiloparsec-scale dual active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are active supermassive black hole pairs co-rotating in galaxies with separations of less than a few kpc. Expected to be a generic outcome of hierarchical galaxy formation, their frequency and demographics remain uncertain. We have carried out an imaging survey with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) of AGNs with double-peaked narrow [O III] emission lines. HST/WFC3 offers high image quality in the near-infrared (NIR) to resolve the two stellar nuclei, and in the optical to resolve [O III] from ionized gas in the narr…
A new set of very high signal-to-noise (S/N > 100/1), medium-resolution (R~3000) optical spectra have been obtained for 302 of the candidate "weak-metal" stars selected by Bidelman & MacConnell. We use these data to calibrate the recently developed generalization of the SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline, and obtain estimates of the atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g , and [Fe/H]) for these non-SDSS/SEGUE data; we also obtain estimates of [C/Fe]. The new abundance measurements are shown to be consistent with available high-resolution spectroscopic determinations, and represent a substantial imp…
Do the theorised different formation mechanisms of fast and slow rotators produce an observable difference in their star formation histories? To study this we identify quenching slow rotators in the MaNGA sample by selecting those which lie below the star forming sequence and identify a sample of quenching fast rotators which were matched in stellar mass. This results in a total sample of 194 kinematically classified galaxies, which is agnostic to visual morphology. We use u-r and NUV-u colours from SDSS and GALEX and an existing inference package, STARPY, to conduct a first look at the onset …
We present the first luminous, spatially resolved binary quasar that clearly inhabits an ongoing galaxy merger. SDSS J125455.09+084653.9 and SDSS J125454.87+084652.1 (SDSS J1254+0846 hereafter) are two luminous z=0.44 radio quiet quasars, with a radial velocity difference of just 215 km/s, separated on the sky by 21 kpc in a disturbed host galaxy merger showing obvious tidal tails. The pair was targeted as part of a complete sample of binary quasar candidates with small transverse separations drawn from SDSS DR6 photometry. We present follow-up optical imaging which shows broad, symmetrical ti…
Using the redMaPPer cluster catalogue based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) photometry, we investigate the importance of major mergers in the stellar mass build-up of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) between $0.08 \leq z \leq 0.50$. We use the SDSS spectroscopy, supplemented with spectroscopic observations from the Southern African Large Telescope at higher redshifts, to identify which BCGs and nearby companions are potential major merger candidates. We use the pair fraction as a proxy for the merger fraction in order to determine how much stellar mass growth the BCGs have experienced …
Mergers can be detected as double-peak narrow emission line galaxies but they are difficult to disentangle from disc rotations and gas outflows. We aim to properly detect such galaxies and distinguish the underlying mechanisms. Relying on RCSED, we developed an automated selection procedure and found 5663 double-peak emission line galaxies at z<0.34 corresponding to 0.8% of the parent database. To characterise these galaxies, we built a single-peak no-bias control sample (NBCS) with the same redshift and stellar mass distributions as the double-peak sample (DPS). These two samples are indeed v…
Merging galaxies play a key role in galaxy evolution, and progress in our understanding of galaxy evolution is slowed by the difficulty of making accurate galaxy merger identifications. We use GADGET-3 hydrodynamical simulations of merging galaxies with the dust radiative transfer code SUNRISE to produce a suite of merging galaxies that span a range of initial conditions. This includes simulated mergers that are gas poor and gas rich and that have a range of mass ratios (minor and major). We adapt the simulated images to the specifications of the SDSS imaging survey and develop a merging galax…
Galaxy interaction is considered a key driver of galaxy evolution and star formation (SF) history. In this paper, we present an empirical picture of the radial extent of interaction-triggered SF along the merger sequence. The samples under study are drawn from the integral field spectroscopy (IFS) survey SDSS-IV MaNGA, including 205 star-forming galaxies in pairs/mergers and ~1350 control galaxies. For each galaxy in pairs, the merger stage is identified according to its morphological signatures: incoming phase, at first pericenter passage, at apocenter, in merging phase, and in final coalesce…
We present a detailed assessment of the global atomic hydrogen gas fraction in a sample of post-merger galaxies identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Archival HI measurements of 47 targets are combined with new Arecibo observations of a further 51 galaxies. The stellar mass range of the post-merger sample, our observing strategy, detection thresholds and data analysis procedures replicate those of the extended GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey (xGASS) which can therefore be used as a control sample. Our principal results are: 1) The post-merger sample shows a ~50 per cent higher HI detect…
We present a statistical study of the luminosity functions of galaxies surrounding luminous red galaxies (LRGs) at average redshifts <z>=0.34 and <z>=0.65. The luminosity functions are derived by extracting source photometry around more than 40,000 LRGs and subtracting foreground and background contamination using randomly selected control fields. We show that at both studied redshifts the average luminosity functions of the LRGs and their satellite galaxies are poorly fitted by a Schechter function due to a luminosity gap between the centrals and their most luminous satellites. We utilize a t…
Based on SDSS data, we have considered the spatial environment of galaxies with extended polar rings. We used two approaches: estimating the projected distance to the nearest companion and counting the number of companions as a function of the distance to the galaxy. Both approaches have shown that the spatial environment of polar-ring galaxies on scales of hundreds of kiloparsecs is, on average, less dense than that of galaxies without polar structures. Apparently, one of the main causes of this effect is that the polar structures in a denser environment are destroyed more often during encoun…
SDSS 1257+5428 is a white dwarf in a close orbit with a companion that has been suggested to be a neutron star. If so, it hosts the closest known neutron star, and its existence implies a great abundance of similar systems and a rate of white-dwarf neutron-star mergers similar to that of the type Ia supernova rate. Here, we present high signal-to-noise spectra of SDSS 1257+5428, which confirm an independent finding that the system is in fact composed of two white dwarfs, one relatively cool and with low mass, and the other hotter and more massive. With this, the demographics and merger rate ar…
Using the AKARI, Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS), Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data, we investigated the relation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) mass ($M_{\rm PAH}$), very small grain mass ($M_{\rm VSG}$), big grain mass ($M_{\rm BG}$) and stellar mass ($M_{\rm star}$) with galaxy merger for 55 star-forming galaxies at redshift $z<0.2$. Using the SDSS image at $z<0.1$ and the HST image at $z>0.1$, we divided the galaxies into merger galaxies and non-merger galaxies with the morphological parameter …
Halo merger trees are constructed from ELUCID, a constrained $N$-body simulation in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) volume. These merger trees are used to populate dark matter halos with galaxies according to an empirical model of galaxy formation. Mock catalogs in the SDSS sky coverage are constructed, which can be used to study the spatial distribution of galaxies in the low-$z$ Universe. These mock catalogs are used to quantify the cosmic variance in the galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF) measured from the SDSS survey. The GSMF estimated from the SDSS magnitude-limited sample can be af…
Counter-rotating components in galaxies are one of the most direct forms of evidence for past gas accretion or merging. We discovered ten edge-on disk gaseous counter-rotators in a sample of 523 edge-on galaxies identified in the final MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO) IFU sample. The counter-rotators tend to located in small groups. The gaseous counter-rotators have intermediate stellar masses and and located in the green valley and red sequence of the color magnitude diagram. The average vertical extents of the stellar and ionized gas disks are the same as for the rest of the sample whi…
We quantify the frequency of companions of low redshift ($0.013 < z < 0.0252$), dwarf galaxies ($2 \times 10^8$ M$_\odot <$ M$_{*} < 5 \times 10^9$ M$_\odot$) that are isolated from more massive galaxies in SDSS and compare against cosmological expectations using mock observations of the Illustris simulation. Dwarf multiples are defined as 2 or more dwarfs that have angular separations > 55'', projected separations r$_p < 150$ kpc and relative line-of-sight velocities $ΔV_{\rm LOS} < 150$ km/s. While the mock catalogs predict a factor of 2 more isolated dwarfs than observed in SDSS, the mean n…
Theoretical studies predict that the most significant growth of supermassive black holes occurs in late-stage mergers, coinciding with the manifestation of dual active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and both major and minor mergers are expected to be important for dual AGN growth. In fact, dual AGNs in minor mergers should be signposts for efficient minor merger-induced SMBH growth for both the more and less massive progenitor. We identified two candidate dual AGNs residing in apparent minor mergers with mass ratios of $\sim$1:7 and $\sim$1:30. SDSS fiber spectra show broad and narrow emission lines …
We report the discovery of two detached double white dwarf (WD) binaries, SDSS J082239.546+304857.19 and SDSS J104336.275+055149.90, with orbital periods of 40 and 46 min, respectively. The 40 min system is eclipsing; it is composed of a 0.30 Msun and a 0.52 Msun WD. The 46 min system is a likely LISA verification binary. The short 20 Myr and ~34 Myr gravitational wave merger times of the two binaries imply that many more such systems have formed and merged over the age of the Milky Way. We update the estimated Milky Way He+CO WD binary merger rate and affirm our previously published result: H…
We develop a galaxy assignment scheme that populates dark matter halos with galaxies by tracing the most bound member particles (MBPs) of simulated halos. Several merger-timescale models based on analytic calculations and numerical simulations are adopted as the survival time of mock satellite galaxies. We build mock galaxy samples from halo merger data of the Horizon Run 4 $N$-body simulation from $z = 12-0$. We compare group properties and two-point correlation functions (2pCFs) of mock galaxies with those of volume-limited SDSS galaxies, with $r$-band absolute magnitudes of $\mathcal{M}_r -…
During galaxy merger events, the supermassive black holes in the center of the galaxies may form a pair of active galactic nuclei (AGN) with kpc-scale or even pc-scale separation. Recently, optical observations revealed a promising dual AGN candidate at the center of the galaxy SDSS J101022.95$+$141300.9 (hereafter J1010$+$1413). The presence of two distinct [O III]-emitting point sources with a projected separation of $\sim 430$ pc indicates a dual AGN system. To search for AGN-dominated radio emission originating from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) point sources, we carried out very long b…
Detecting post-merger features of merger remnants is highly dependent on the depth of observation images. However, it has been poorly discussed how long the post-merger features are visible under different observational conditions. We investigate a merger-feature time useful for understanding the morphological transformation of galaxy mergers via numerical simulations. We use N-body/hydrodynamic simulations, including gas cooling, star formation, and supernova feedback. We run a set of simulations with various initial orbital configurations and with progenitor galaxies having different morphol…
Models and observations suggest that luminous quasar activity is triggered by mergers, so it should preferentially occur in the most massive primordial dark matter haloes, where the frequency of mergers is expected to be the highest. Since the importance of galaxy mergers increases with redshift, we identify the high-redshift Universe as the ideal laboratory for studying dual AGN. Here we present the X-ray properties of two systems of dual quasars at z=3.0-3.3 selected from the SDSS-DR6 at separations of 6-8 arcsec (43-65kpc) and observed by Chandra for 65ks each. Both members of each pair are…
We present a case study of the tidal interaction between low mass, star-forming, galaxies initially found exploring the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) images and further analyzed with SDSS spectroscopy and UV GALEX photometry. With a luminosity of M$_{r}$ = $-$17.7 mag and exhibiting a prominent tidal filament, UGC 6741 appears as a scale down version of massive gas--rich interacting systems and mergers. The stellar disk of the smaller companion, UGC 6741_B, which is three times less massive, has likely been already destroyed. Both galaxies, which are connected by a 15 kpc long stellar bridge,…
We present a sample of 18 optically-selected and X-ray detected spatially offset active galactic nuclei (AGN) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). In 9 systems, the X-ray AGN is spatially offset from the galactic stellar core that is located within the 3'' diameter SDSS spectroscopic fiber. In 11 systems, the X-ray AGN is spatially offset from a stellar core that is located outside the fiber, with an overlap of 2. To build the sample, we cross-matched Type II AGN selected from the SDSS galaxy catalogue with archival Chandra imaging and employed our custom astrometric and registration proc…
This paper presents a detection of significant velocity offset between emission and absorption lines for a dual core system in SDSS~J155708.82+273518.74 (= SDSS~J1557). The photometric image of SDSS~J1557 exhibits clear two cores with a projected separation of $\sim$2.2 arcseconds (4.9 kpc) determined by GALFIT. Based on the applications of the commonly accepted pPXF code with 636 theoretical SSP templates, the host galaxy contribution can be well determined. Then, the emission line features of SDSS~J1557 can be well measured after subtraction of host starlight. It is found that the velocity o…
In this paper we present an overview of the MAGNA (Multiple AGN Activity) project aiming at a comprehensive study of multiple supemassive black hole systems. With the main goal to characterize the sources in merging systems at different stages of evolution, we selected a sample of objects optically classified as multiple systems on the basis of emission line diagnostics and started a massive multiband observational campaign. Here we report on the discovery of the exceptionally high AGN density compact group SDSS~J0959+1259. A multiband study suggests that strong interactions are taking place a…
Gas stripping of spiral galaxies or mergers are thought to be the formation mechanisms of lenticular galaxies. In order to determine the conditions in which each scenario dominates, we derive stellar populations of both the bulge and disk regions of 279 lenticular galaxies in the MaNGA survey. We find a clear bimodality in stellar age and metallicity within the population of S0s and this is strongly correlated with stellar mass. Old and metal-rich bulges and disks belong to massive galaxies, and young and metal-poor bulges and disks are hosted by low-mass galaxies. From this we conclude that t…
Mergers of gas-poor galaxies, so-called dry mergers, may play a fundamental role in the assembly of the most massive galaxies, and therefore, in galaxy formation theories. Using the SDSS, we have serendipitously discovered a rare system in the observational and theoretical context, possibly a quintuple dry merger at low redshift. As a follow-up, we have obtained NOT long-slit spectra of the group, in order to measure the individual redshifts and gain insight into its merger fate. Our results show an isolated, low-redshift galaxy group consisting of massive, quiescent, early-type galaxies, comp…
Elliptical galaxies with blue optical colours and significant star formation are hypothesised to be major merger remnants of gas-rich spiral galaxies or normal elliptical galaxies with a sudden burst of star formation. We present here a scenario in which blue elliptical galaxies identified in shallow imaging surveys may fail to recover faint features that are indicative of past merger activity using a nearby major merger remnant. Based on deep optical imaging data of the post-merger galaxy, NGC 7252, we demonstrate that the galaxy can appear as an elliptical galaxy if it is observed at higher …
The characterisation of galaxy-scale outflows in terms of their multi-phase nature, amount, and effects of flowing material is crucial to place constraints on models of galaxy evolution. This study can proceed only with the detailed investigation of individual targets. We present a spatially resolved spectroscopic optical data analysis of Mkn 848, a complex system consisting of two merging galaxies at z~0.04 that are separated 7.5 kpc (projected distance). Motivated by the presence of a multi-phase outflow in the north-west system revealed by the SDSS integrated spectrum, we analysed the publi…
We use stellar mass functions to study the properties and the significance of quenching through major galaxy mergers. In addition to SDSS DR7 and Galaxy Zoo 1 data, we use samples of visually selected major galaxy mergers and post merger galaxies. We determine the stellar mass functions of the stages that we would expect major merger quenched galaxies to pass through on their way from the blue cloud to the red sequence: 1: major merger, 2: post merger, 3: blue early type, 4: green early type and 5: red early type. Based on the similar mass function shapes we conclude that major mergers are lik…
In this work, we present a high spatial resolution study of a fossil cluster, SDSS J0150-1005 ($z \simeq 0.364$), based on the imaging spectroscopic analysis of \chandra\ observation. The \chandra\ X-ray image shows a relax and symmetric morphology, which indicates SDSS J0150-1005 is a well-developed galaxy cluster with no sign of recent merger. Its global gas temperature is 5.73 $\pm$ 0.80 keV, and the virial mass is 6.23 $\pm$ 1.34 $\times 10^{14} $ M$_{\odot}$ according to the isothermal model. Compared with polytropic temperature model, the mass calculated based on isothermal model overest…

The question of whether galaxy mergers are linked to the triggering of active galactic nuclei (AGN) continues to be a topic of considerable debate. The issue can be broken down into two distinct questions: 1) Can galaxy mergers trigger AGN? 2) Are galaxy mergers the dominant AGN triggering mechanism? A complete picture of the AGN-merger connection requires that both of these questions are addressed with the same dataset. In previous work, we have shown that galaxy mergers selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) show an excess of both optically-selected, and mid-IR colour-selected AGN…
