Narrow double-peaked emission lines of SDSS J131642.90+175332.5: signature of a single or a binary AGN in a merger, jet-cloud interaction, or unusual narrow-line region geometry
We present an analysis of the active galaxy SDSS J131642.90+175332.5, which is remarkable because all of its narrow emission lines are double-peaked, and because it additionally shows an extra broad component (FHWM ~ 1400 km/s) in most of its forbidden lines, peaking in between the two narrow systems. The peaks of the two narrow systems are separated by 400--500 km/s in velocity space. The spectral characteristics of double-peaked [O III] emission have previously been interpreted as a signature of dual or binary active galactic nuclei (AGNs), among other models. In the context of the binary scenario, SDSS J131642.90+175332.5 is a particularly good candidate because not just one line but all of its emission lines are double-peaked. However, we also discuss a number of other scenarios which can potentially account for double-peaked narrow emission lines, including projection effects, a two-sided outflow, jet-cloud interactions, special narrow-line region (NLR) geometries (disks, bars, or inner spirals), and a galaxy merger with only one AGN illuminating two NLRs. We argue that the similarity of the emission-line ratios in both systems, and the presence of the very unusual broad component at intermediate velocity, makes a close pair of unrelated AGNs unlikely, and rather argues for processes in a single galaxy or merger. We describe future observations which can distinguish between these remaining possibilities.
In this letter, we firstly report one unique object SDSS J0832+0643 with particular features of narrow balmer emission lines: double-peaked narrow Hαbut single-peaked narrow Hβ. The particular features can not be expected by currently proposed kinematic models for double-peaked narrow emission lines, because the proposed kinematic models lead to similar line profiles of narrow balmer emission lines. However, due to radiative transfer effects, the non-kinematic model can be naturally applied to well explain the particular features of narrow balmer emission lines: larger optical depth in Hαthan …
In this manuscript, an interesting blue Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) SDSS J154751.94+025550 (=SDSS J1547) is reported with very different line profiles of broad Balmer emission lines: double-peaked broad H$β$ but single-peaked broad H$α$. SDSS J1547 is the first AGN with detailed discussions on very different line profiles of the broad Balmer emission lines, besides the simply mentioned different broad lines in the candidate for a binary black hole (BBH) system in SDSS J0159+0105. The very different line profiles of the broad Balmer emission lines can be well explained by different physical co…
In this manuscript, an interesting method is proposed to test dual core system for double-peaked narrow emission lines, through precious dual core system with double-peaked narrow Balmer lines in one system in main galaxy but with single-peaked narrow Balmer lines in the other system in companion galaxy. Under a dual core system, considering narrow Balmer (H$α$ and H$β$) emissions ($f_{e,~α}$ and $f_{e,~β}$) from companion galaxy but covered by SDSS fiber for the main galaxy and narrow Balmer emissions ($f_{c,~α}$ and $f_{c,~β}$) from the companion galaxy covered by SDSS fiber for the companio…
Double-peaked narrow emission lines in active galactic nucleus (AGN) spectra can be produced by AGN outflows, rotation, or dual AGNs, which are AGN pairs in ongoing galaxy mergers. Consequently, double-peaked narrow AGN emission lines are useful tracers of the coevolution of galaxies and their supermassive black holes, as driven by AGN feedback and AGN fueling. We investigate this concept further with follow-up optical longslit observations of a sample of 95 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) galaxies that have double-peaked narrow AGN emission lines. Based on a kinematic analysis of the longslit…
We have performed a spectral decomposition to search for dual active galactic nuclei (DAGNs) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) quasars with $z<0.25$. Potential DAGN candidates are searched by referencing velocity offsets and spectral shapes of double-peaked [O III] lines of known DAGNs. Out of 1271 SDSS quasars, we have identified 77 DAGN candidates. Optical and mid-infrared diagnostic diagrams are used to investigate the ionizing source in the DAGN candidates. The optical diagnostic analysis suggests 93\% of them are powered by AGNs, and mid-infrared diagnostic analysis suggests 97\% are…

Many Seyfert galaxies display weak 'coronal' emission features corresponding to [Fe VII], [Fe XI] and [Fe XIV] in their optical spectra, whereas elsewhere these lines seem to be entirely absent. These lines appear to highlight zones in the nucleus irradiated by high-energy photons. The presence of these zones and the conditions therein as determined by the relative line strengths and profiles impose important constraints on the physical models of active galactic nuclei, and Seyferts in particular. In 2009 the discovery was announced of the highly unusual spectrum of SDSS J0952+2143, where the …
Most massive galaxies contain a supermassive black hole (SMBH) at their center. When galaxies merge, their SMBHs sink to the center of the new galaxy where they are thought to eventually merge. During this process an SMBH binary is formed. The presence of two sets of broad emission lines in the optical spectrum of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) has been interpreted as evidence for two broad line regions (BLR), one surrounding each SMBH in a binary. We modeled the broad Balmer emission lines in SDSS spectra of 373 extreme variability AGNs using one broad and several narrow Gaussian components…
In this manuscript, we study properties of long-term optical variability of a large sample of 106 SDSS spectroscopically confirmed AGN with double-peaked broad low-ionization emission lines (double-peaked emitters). The long-term optical light curves over 8 years are collected from the Catalina Sky Surveys Data Release 2. And, the Damped Random Walk (DRW) process is applied to describe the long-term variability of the double-peaked emitters. Meanwhile, the same DRW process is applied to long-term optical light curves of more than 7000 spectroscopically confirmed normal quasars in the SDSS Stri…
In the manuscript, the simple but interesting results are reported on the upper limits of NLRs sizes of a small sample of 38 low redshift ($z<0.1$) AGN with double-peaked broad emission lines (double-peaked BLAGN), in order to check whether the NLRs sizes in type-1 AGN and type-2 AGN obey the similar empirical dependence on \o3~ luminosity. In order to correct the inclination effects on projected NLRs sizes of type-1 AGN, the accretion disk origin is commonly applied to describe the double-peaked broad H$α$ leading to the determined inclination angles of central disk-like BLRs of the 38 double…
The double-peaked emission-line galaxies has long been perceived as objects related with merging galaxies or other phenomena of disturbed dynamical activities, such as outflows and disk rotation. In order to find the connection between the unique activities happening in these objects and their stellar population physics, we study the stellar populations of the stacked spectra drawn from double-peaked emission-line galaxies in the Large Sky Area Multi-object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) Data Release 4 (DR4) and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 (DR7) database. We group th…
We discuss results from very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of two Seyfert galaxies with double peaked emission lines in their SDSS optical spectra. Such AGN are potential candidates for the presence of binary black holes, which can be resolved on parsec-scales with VLBI. Our observations do not detect twin radio cores but rather nuclear outflows in these Seyferts. These outflows could be interacting with the emission line clouds producing the double peaks in the emission lines.
In this manuscript, we proposed an interesting method to test the dual supermassive black hole model for AGN with double-peaked narrow \oiii lines (double-peaked narrow emitters), through their broad optical Balmer line properties. Under the dual supermassive black hole model for double-peaked narrow emitters, we could expect statistically smaller virial black hole masses estimated by observed broad Balmer line properties than true black hole masses (total masses of central two black holes). Then, we compare the virial black hole masses between a sample of 37 double-peaked narrow emitters with…
This paper describes a search for galaxy centers with clear indications of unusual stellar populations with an initial mass function flatter than Salpeter at high stellar masses. Out of a sample of 668 face-on galaxies with stellar masses in the range 10^10- 10^11 M_sol, I identify 15 galaxies with young to intermediate age central stellar populations with unusual stellar population gradients in the inner regions of the galaxy. In these galaxies, the 4000 Angstrom break is either flat or rising towards the center of the galaxy, indicating that the central regions host evolved stars, but the H$…
We present a $z = 0.94$ quasar, SDSS J004846.45-004611.9, discovered in the SDSS-III BOSS survey. A visual analysis of this spectrum reveals highly broadened and blueshifted narrow emission lines, in particular [Ne~V]$\lambda3426$ and [O~III]$\lambda5007$, with outflow velocities of 4000 km s$^{-1}$, along with unusually large [Ne V]$\lambda3426$/[Ne III]$\lambda3869$ ratios. The gas shows higher ionization at higher outflow velocities, indicating a connection between the powerful outflow and the unusual strength of the high ionization lines. The SED and the $i - \text{W3}$ color of the source…
We have serendipitously discovered that Leoncino Dwarf, an ultra-faint, low-metallicity record-holder dwarf galaxy, may have hosted a transient source, and possibly exhibited a change in morphology, a shift in the center of brightness, and peak variability of the main (host) source in images taken approximately 40 yr apart; it is highly likely that these phenomena are related. Scenarios involving a Solar System object, a stellar cluster, dust enshrouding, and accretion variability have been considered, and discarded, as the origin of the transient. Although a combination of time-varying strong…
How can we discover objects we did not know existed within the large datasets that now abound in astronomy? We present an outlier detection algorithm that we developed, based on an unsupervised Random Forest. We test the algorithm on more than two million galaxy spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and examine the 400 galaxies with the highest outlier score. We find objects which have extreme emission line ratios and abnormally strong absorption lines, objects with unusual continua, including extremely reddened galaxies. We find galaxy-galaxy gravitational lenses, double-peaked emission l…
The search and study of close pairs of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) is important in the study of galaxy mergers which can possibly trigger active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity, and in the context of their evolution into the gravitational wave emitting regime. The quasar SDSS~J1048+0055 was identified as a SMBH binary candidate based on the observed double-peaked \OIII$λλ$4959,5007 emission lines and two distinct radio components separated by $\sim 20$~pc \citep{2004ApJ...604L..33Z}. To ascertain the binary nature of this source, we analyzed multi-frequency, multi-epoch very long baseline…
We exploit the spectral archive of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 to select unusual quasar spectra. The selection method is based on a combination of the power of self-organising maps and the visual inspection of a huge number of spectra. Self-organising maps were applied to nearly 10^5 spectra classified as quasars by the SDSS pipeline. Particular attention was paid to minimise possible contamination by rare peculiar stellar spectral types. We present a catalogue of 1005 quasars with unusual spectra. This large sample provides a useful resource for both studying properties…
On the basis of the SDSS survey and spectral observations with the 6-m telescope of SAO RAS, we have peformed a detailed study of SDSS J170745+302056. By combination of its characteristics -- exponential surface brightness distribution, central surface brightness of stellar disk $μ_0(B) = 23.25\,^m/\square"$, blue colors, low metallicity and low star formation rate -- the galaxy is a typical low surface brightness spiral galaxy. Exponential scalelength of the galaxy is $\approx$3 kpc, its optical diameter exceeds 20 kpc. SDSS J170745+302056 is a member of a group of five galaxies and probably …
While performing a survey to detect recoiling supermassive black holes, we have identified an unusual source having a projected offset of 800 pc from a nearby dwarf galaxy. The object, SDSS J113323.97+550415.8, exhibits broad emission lines and strong variability. While originally classified as a supernova (SN) because of its nondetection in 2005, we detect it in recent and past observations over 63 yr and find over a magnitude of rebrightening in the last 2 years. Using high-resolution adaptive optics observations, we constrain the source emission region to be <12 pc and find a disturbed host…
The goal of this paper is to investigate the physical nature of galaxies in the redshift range $0.02<z<0.15$ that have strong excess emission at mid-IR wavelengths and to determine whether they host a population of accreting black holes that cannot be identified using optical emission lines. We show that at fixed stellar mass $M_*$ and $D_n(4000)$, the distribution of [3.4]-[4.6] $μ$m (WISE W1-W2 band) colours is sharply peaked, with a long tail to much redder W1-W2 colours. We introduce a procedure to pull out the red outlier population based on a combination of three stellar population diagn…
Double-peaked emission line AGN (DPAGN) have been regarded as binary black hole candidates. We present here results from parsec-scale radio observations with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) of five DPAGN belonging to the KISSR sample of emission-line galaxies. This work concludes our pilot study of nine type 2 Seyfert and LINER DPAGN from the KISSR sample. In the nine sources, dual compact cores are only detected in the "offset AGN", KISSR 102. The overall incidence of jets however, in the eight sources detected with the VLBA, is $\ge$60%. We find a difference in the "missing flux density"…
The high redshift GPS quasar PKS 0858-279 exhibits the following properties which make the source unusual. Our RATAN-600 monitoring of 1-22 GHz spectrum has detected broad-band radio variability with high amplitude and relatively short time scale. In the same time, the milliarcsecond scale structure observed in a snapshot VLBA survey turned out to be very resolved which is not expected from the fast flux density variations. We performed 1.4-22 GHz VLBA observations of this quasar in 2005-2007. It has revealed a core-jet morphology. A high Doppler factor delta is suggested for the jet, its natu…
The binary emission-line system, particularly the binary broad-line emission system, is considered the most effective indicator of the black hole binary. A plausible example of such a system, SDSS J153636.22+044127.0, was reported as the first known object with two hydrogen Balmer broad-line systems, which are interpreted to be the result of broad-line regions around a pair of black holes (Boroson \& Lauer 2009). Here, we show the follow-up optical and near-infrared spectral observations of SDSS J153636.22+044127.0 and its analogues. In these objects, the broad hydrogen Balmer and Paschen, He …
We present HST WFPC2/PC images and KPNO 4-m longslit spectroscopy of the QSO SDSS J153636.22+044127.0, which we advanced as a candidate binary supermassive black hole. The images reveal a close companion coincident with the radio source identified by Wrobel & Laor (2009). It appears to be consistent with a M_g ~ -21.4 elliptical galaxy, if it is at the QSO redshift. The spectroscopy, however, shows no spatial offset of the red or blue Balmer line subcomponents. The companion is thus not the source of either the red or blue broad line systems; SDSS J153636.22+044127.0 cannot be explained as a c…
We extract the multiple-epoch Balmer-line profiles of the heavily obscured quasar 3C 445 from the spectral curves in the literature, and analyze the emission-line profiles of the H$α$ and H$β$ lines and the profile variability in the H$α$ line in the large time interval of more than three decades. The profile comparison between the H$α$ and H$β$ lines shows that both Balmer lines share the profile with the same form, while the blue system of the H$β$ line is seriously weaker than that of the H$α$ line. Moreover, the blue system of the H$α$ line suddenly disappeared completely and then did not …
Supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries form due to galaxy mergers and minor accretion events. When the SMBHs are accreting, they form dual or binary AGN and can give rise to double-peaked emission lines in the optical spectra of the merger remnant. The double-peaked emission lines could also be due to jet-ISM interaction or rotating disks. One of the best ways to confirm dual/binary AGN in double-peaked AGN (DPAGN) is by using high resolution radio observations. We have observed a sample of 20 DPAGN at two or more frequencies using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), of which one sourc…
One percent of redshift z~0.1 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) show velocity splitting of a few hundred km/s in the narrow emission lines in spatially integrated spectra. Such line profiles have been found to arise from the bulk motion of ionized gas clouds associated with galactic-scale outflows, merging pairs of galaxies each harboring a supermassive black hole (SMBH), and/or galactic-scale disk rotation. It remains unclear, however, how the frequency of narrow-line velocity splitting may depend on AGN luminosity. Here we study the correlation between the fraction of Type 2 AGNs with double-pea…
We present a radio and optical study of the double-double radio galaxy J1328+2752 based on new low-frequency GMRT observations and SDSS data. The radio data were used to investigate the morphology and to perform a spectral index analysis. In this source we find that the inner double is misaligned by $\sim$30$^\circ$ from the axis of the outer diffuse structure. The SDSS spectrum shows that the central component has double-peaked line profiles with different emission strengths. The average velocity off-set of the two components is 235$\pm$10.5 km s$^{-1}$. The misaligned radio morphology along …
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) discovered a few unusual quasars with a characteristic break in the continuum around 3000 A that neither shows the typical structure of broad absorption line (BAL) troughs nor is explained by typical intrinsic dust reddening. We used the method of Kohonen self-organising maps for a systematical search for quasars with such properties in the SDSS spectra archive. We constructed a sample of 23 quasars classified as 3000 A break quasars and two comparison samples of quasars with similar properties, to some extent, but also showing typical BAL features. We compu…
The sources SDSS\,J113126.08-020459.2 and SDSS\,J110851.04+065901.4 are two double-peaked [O III] emitting AGN, identified as candidate binary AGNs by optical and near infrared (NIR) observations. We observed the two sources with high resolution Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) using the European VLBI Network at 5\,GHz, reduced VLA observations at three frequencies available for one of the sources, and used archival HST observations. For the source SDSS\,J113126.08-020459.2, the VLBI observations detected only one single compact component associated with the eastern NIR nucleus. In SDS…
Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs) are transient events observed when a star passes close enough to a supermassive black hole to be tidally destroyed. Many TDE candidates have been discovered in host galaxies whose spectra have weak or no line emission yet strong Balmer line absorption, indicating a period of intense star formation that has recently ended. As such, TDE host galaxies fall into the rare class of quiescent Balmer-strong galaxies. Here, we quantify the fraction of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with spectral properties like those of TDE hosts, determining the extent t…
Double-peaked [O III]5007, profiles in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) may provide evidence for the existence of dual AGNs, but a good diagnostic for selecting them is currently lacking. Starting from $\sim$ 7000 active galaxies in SDSS DR7, we assemble a sample of 87 type 2 AGNs with double-peaked [O III]5007, profiles. The nuclear obscuration in the type 2 AGNs allows us to determine redshifts of host galaxies through stellar absorption lines. We typically find that one peak is redshifted and another is blueshifted relative to the host galaxy. We find a strong correlation between the ratios of…
Driven by the imminent need to rapidly process and classify millions of AGN spectra drawn from next generation astronomical facilities, we present a spectral fitting routine for Type 2 AGN spectra optimised for high volume processing, using the Quasar Spectral Fitting library (QSFit). We analyse an optically selected sample of 813 luminous Type 2 AGN spectra at $z < 0.83$ from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to qualify its performance. We report a median narrow line H$α$/H$β$ Balmer decrement of 4.5$\pm$0.8, alluding to the presence of dust in the narrow line region (NLR). We publish a spe…
The physics and demographics of type 2 quasars remain poorly understood, and new samples of such objects selected in a variety of ways can give insight into their physical properties, evolution, and relationship to their host galaxies. We present a sample of 2758 type 2 quasars at z $\leq$ 1 from the SDSS-III/BOSS spectroscopic database, selected on the basis of their emission-line properties. We probe the luminous end of the population by requiring the rest-frame equivalent width of [OIII] to be > 100 Å. We distinguish our objects from star-forming galaxies and type 1 quasars using line width…
We present here the results from dual-frequency phase-referenced VLBI observations of the Seyfert galaxy KISSR1494, which exhibits double peaked emission lines in its SDSS spectrum. We detect a single radio component at 1.6 GHz, but not at 5 GHz implying a spectral index steeper than $-1.5\pm0.5$ ($S_ν\proptoν^α$). The high brightness temperature of the radio component ($\sim1.4\times10^7$ K) and the steep radio spectrum support a non-thermal synchrotron origin. A crude estimate of the black hole mass derived from the $M_{BH}-σ_{\star}$ relation is $\sim1.4\pm1.0\times10^8$ Msun; it is accreti…
According to hierarchical structure formation models, merging galaxies are expected to be seen in different stages of their coalescence. However, currently there are no straightforward observational methods neither to select nor to confirm a large number of dual active galactic nuclei (AGN) candidates. Most attempts involve the better understanding of double-peaked narrow emission line sources, to distinguish the objects where the emission lines originate from narrow-line kinematics or jet-driven outflows from those which might harbour dual AGN. We observed four such candidate sources with the…
Kiloparsec-scale dual active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are active supermassive black hole pairs co-rotating in galaxies with separations of less than a few kpc. Expected to be a generic outcome of hierarchical galaxy formation, their frequency and demographics remain uncertain. We have carried out an imaging survey with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) of AGNs with double-peaked narrow [O III] emission lines. HST/WFC3 offers high image quality in the near-infrared (NIR) to resolve the two stellar nuclei, and in the optical to resolve [O III] from ionized gas in the narr…
The radio-quiet quasar SDSS J1536+0441A shows two broad-line emission systems, recently interpreted as a binary black hole (BBH) system with a subparsec separation; as a double-peaked emitter; or as both types of systems. The NRAO VLBA was used to search for 8.4 GHz emission from SDSS J1536+0441A, focusing on the optical localization region for the broad-line emission, of area 5400 mas^2 (0.15 kpc^2). One source was detected, with a diameter of less than 1.63 mas (8.5 pc) and a brightness temperature T_b > 1.2 x 10^7 K. New NRAO VLA photometry at 22.5 GHz, and earlier photometry at 8.5 GHz, gi…
We detected a very strong X-ray decline in the galaxy IRAS23226-3843 within the XMM-Newton slew survey in 2017. Subsequently, we carried out multi-band follow-up studies to investigate this fading galaxy in more detail. We took deep follow-up Swift, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR observations in combination with optical SALT spectra of IRAS23226-3843 in 2017. In addition, we reinspected optical, UV, and X-ray data that were taken in the past. IRAS23226-3843 decreased in X-rays by a factor of more than 30 with respect to ROSAT and Swift data taken 10 to 27 years before. The broadband XMM-Newton/NuSTAR …
Megahertz peaked-spectrum (MPS) sources have spectra that peak at frequencies below 1 GHz in the observer's frame and are believed to be radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN). We recently presented a new method to search for high-redshift AGN by identifying unusually compact MPS sources. In this paper, we present European VLBI Network (EVN) observations of 11 MPS sources which we use to determine their sizes and investigate the nature of the sources with ~10 mas resolution. Of the 11 sources, we detect nine with the EVN. Combining the EVN observations with spectral and redshift information, …
