State-of-the-art integral field surveys like $\mathrm{ATLAS^{3D}}$, SLUGGS, CALIFA, SAMI, and MaNGA provide large data sets of kinematical observations of early-type galaxies (ETGs), yielding constraints on the formation of ETGs. Using the cosmological hydrodynamical \textit{Magneticum Pathfinder} simulations, we investigate the paradigm of fast and slow rotating ETGs in a fully cosmological context. We show that the ETGs within the \textit{Magneticum} simulation are in remarkable agreement with the observations, revealing fast and slow rotators quantified by the angular momentum proxy $λ_{\mathrm{R}}$ and the flattening $ε$ with the observed prevalence. Taking full advantage of the three-dimensional data, we demonstrate that the dichotomy between fast and slow rotating galaxies gets enhanced, showing an upper and lower population separated by an underpopulated region in the edge-on $λ_{\mathrm{R}}$-$ε$ plane. Following the evolution of the $λ_{\mathrm{R}}$-$ε$ plane through cosmic time, we find that, while the upper population is already in place at $z=2$, the lower population gets statistically significant below $z=1$ with a gradual increase. At least $50\%$ of the galaxies transition from fast to slow rotators on a short timescale, in most cases associated to a significant merger event. Furthermore, we connect the $M_{*}$-$j_{*}$ plane, quantified by the $b$-value, with the $λ_{\mathrm{R}}$-$ε$ plane, revealing a strong correlation between the position of a galaxy in the $λ_{\mathrm{R}}$-$ε$ plane and the $b$-value. Going one step further, we classify our sample based on features in their velocity map, finding all five common kinematic groups, also including the recently observed group of prolate rotators, populating distinct regions in the $λ_{\mathrm{R}}$-$b$ plane.
We recently developed an automated method, auto-GMM to decompose simulated galaxies. It extracts kinematic structures in an accurate, efficient, and unsupervised way. We use auto-GMM to study the stellar kinematic structures of disk galaxies from the TNG100 run of IllustrisTNG. We identify four to five structures that are commonly present among the diverse galaxy population. Structures having strong to moderate rotation are defined as cold and warm disks, respectively. Spheroidal structures dominated by random motions are classified as bulges or stellar halos, depending on how tightly bound th…

We present well-resolved near-IR and sub-mm analysis of the three highly star-forming massive ($>10^{11}\,\rm M_{\odot}$) galaxies within the core of the RO-1001 galaxy group at $\rm z=2.91$. Each of them displays kpc-scale compact star-bursting cores with properties consistent with forming galaxy bulges, embedded at the center of extended, massive stellar disks. Surprisingly, the stellar disks are unambiguously both quiescent, and severely lopsided. Therefore, `outside-in' quenching is ongoing in the three group galaxies. We propose an overall scenario in which the strong mass lopsidedness in…

A galaxy's morphological features encode details about its gas content, star formation history, and feedback processes, which play important roles in regulating its growth and evolution. We use deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to learn a galaxy's optical morphological information in order to estimate its neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) content directly from SDSS $gri$ image cutouts. We are able to accurately predict a galaxy's logarithmic HI mass fraction, $\mathcal{M} \equiv \log(M_{\rm HI}/M_\star)$, by training a CNN on galaxies in the ALFALFA 40% sample. Using pattern recognition (PR…
We measure the stellar populations as a function of radius for 90 early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the MASSIVE survey, a volume-limited integral-field spectroscopic (IFS) galaxy survey targeting all northern-sky ETGs with absolute K-band magnitude M_K < -25.3 mag, or stellar mass M* 4x10^11 M_sun, within 108 Mpc. We are able to measure reliable stellar population parameters for individual galaxies out to 10-20 kpc (1-3 R_e) depending on the galaxy. Focusing on ~R_e (~10 kpc), we find significant correlations between the abundance ratios, sigma, and M* at large radius, but we also find that the ab…
To investigate the effects the cluster environment has on Late-Type Galaxies (LTGs) we studied HI perturbation signatures for all Abell 1367 LTGs with HI detections. We used new VLA HI observations combined with AGES single dish blind survey data. Our study indicates that the asymmetry between the high-and low-velocity wings of the characteristic double-horn integrated HI spectrum as measured by the asymmetry parameter, Aflux, can be a useful diagnostic for ongoing and/or recent HI stripping. 26% of A1367 LTGs have an Aflux ratio, more asymmetrical than 3 times the 1σ spread in the Aflux ratio…
We present Forstand, a new code for constructing dynamical models of galaxies with the Schwarzschild orbit-superposition method. These models are constrained by line-of-sight kinematic observations and applicable to galaxies of all morphological types, including disks and triaxial rotating bars. Our implementation has several novel and improved features, is computationally efficient, and made publicly available. Using mock datasets taken from N-body simulations, we demonstrate that the pattern speed of a bar can be recovered with an accuracy of 10-20%, regardless of orientation, if the 3D shap…

In this work, we analyze a sample of $\sim$4000 massive ($M_*\geq 10^{11} M_\odot$ at $z=0$) galaxies in TNG300, the $(300 \mathrm{Mpc})^3$ box of the IllustrisTNG simulation suite. We characterize the shape and kinematics of these galaxies with a focus on the kinematic misalignment ($Ψ_\mathrm{int}$) between the angular momentum (AM) and morphological major axis. We find that the traditional purely shape- or kinematics-based classifications are insufficient to characterize the diversity of our sample and define a new set of classes based on the rates of change of the galaxies' morphological a…
Tracing kinematic (mis)alignments in CALIFA merging galaxies: Stellar and ionized gas kinematic orientations at every merger stage
We present the mass distribution of a sample of 121 nearby galaxies with high quality optical velocity fields and available infra-red $\it{WISE}$ 3.4 $μ$m data. Contrary to previous studies, this sample covers all morphological types and is not biased toward late-type galaxies. These galaxies are part of the Fabry-Perot kinematical $\it{GHASP}$ survey of spirals and irregular nearby galaxies. Combining the kinematical data to the $\it{WISE}$ surface brightness data probing the emission from the old stellar population, we derive mass models allowing us to compare the luminous to the dark matter…
Compact Obscured Nuclei (CONs) account for a significant fraction of the population of luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs). These galaxy nuclei are compact, with radii of 10-100~pc, with large optical depths at submm and far-infrared wavelengths, and characterized by vibrationally excited HCN emission. It is not known what powers the large luminosities of the CON host galaxies because of the extreme optical depths towards their nuclei. CONs represent an extreme phase of nuclear growth, hiding either a rapidly accreting supermassive black hole or an abnormal mode of …
We investigate the connection between the morphology and internal kinematics of the stellar component of central galaxies with mass $M_\star > {10}^{9.5} {\rm M}_\odot$ in the EAGLE simulations. We compare several kinematic diagnostics commonly used to describe simulated galaxies, and find good consistency between them. We model the structure of galaxies as ellipsoids and quantify their morphology via the ratios of their principal axes. We show that the differentiation of blue star-forming and red quiescent galaxies using morphological diagnostics can be achieved with similar efficacy to the u…
The Hubble sequence provides a useful classification of galaxy morphology at low redshift. However, morphologies are not static, but rather evolve as the growth of structure proceeds through mergers, accretion and secular processes. We investigate how kinematically defined disc and spheroidal structures form and evolve in the EAGLE hydrodynamic simulation of galaxy formation. At high redshift most galaxies of all masses are asymmetric. By redshift $z\simeq 1.5$ the Hubble sequence is established and after this time most of the stellar mass is in spheroids whose contribution to the stellar mass…
While the kinematics of galaxies up to z~3 have been characterized in detail, only a handful of galaxies at high redshift (z>4) have been examined in such a way. The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Large Program to INvestigate [CII] at Early times (ALPINE) survey observed a statistically significant sample of 118 star-forming main sequence galaxies at z=4.4-5.9 in [CII]158um emission, increasing the number of such observations by nearly 10x. A preliminary qualitative classification of these sources revealed a diversity of kinematic types (i.e., rotators, mergers, and disper…

Observations have shown that the star-formation activity and the morphology of galaxies are closely related, but the underlying physical connection is not well understood. Using the TNG50 simulation, we explore the quenching and the morphological evolution of the 102 massive quiescent galaxies in the mass range of $10.5<\log(M_{\rm stellar}/M_{\odot})<11.5$ selected at $z=0$. The morphology of galaxies is quantified based on their kinematics, and we measure the quenching timescale of individual galaxies directly from star formation history. We show that galaxies tend to be quenched more rapidl…
Mass models of 100 nearby spiral and irregular galaxies, covering morphological types from Sa to Irr, are computed using H$α$ rotation curves and R$_c$-band surface brightness profiles. The kinematics was obtained using a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer. One of the aims is to compare our results with those from Korsaga et al. (2018), which used mid-infrared (MIR) WISE W1 (3.4 $μ$m) photometric data. For the analysis, the same tools were used for both bands. Pseudo-Isothermal (ISO) core and Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) cuspy models have been used. We test Best Fit Models (BFM), Maximum Disc Mo…
We present a 3D Bayesian method to model the kinematics of strongly lensed galaxies from spatially-resolved emission-line observations. This technique enables us to simultaneously recover the lens-mass distribution and the source kinematics directly from the 3D data cube. We have tested this new method with simulated OSIRIS observations for nine star-forming lensed galaxies with different kinematic properties. The simulated rotation curves span a range of shapes which are prototypes of different morphological galaxy types, from dwarf to massive spiral galaxies. We have found that the median re…

The evolution of molecular clouds in galactic centres is thought to differ from that in galactic discs due to a significant influence of the external gravitational potential. We present a set of numerical simulations of molecular clouds orbiting on the 100-pc stream of the Central Molecular Zone (the central $\sim500$ pc of the Galaxy) and characterise their morphological and kinematic evolution in response to the background potential and eccentric orbital motion. We find that the clouds are shaped by strong shear and torques, by tidal and geometric deformation, and by their passage through th…
Using Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) spectroscopy, we analyse the stellar kinematics of 18 brightest group early-type (BGEs) galaxies, selected from the Complete Local-Volume Groups Sample (CLoGS). We analyse the kinematic maps for distinct features, and measure specific stellar angular momentum within one effective radius ($λ_{e}$). We classify the BGEs as fast (10/18) or slow (8/18) rotators, suggesting at least two different evolution paths. We quantify the anti-correlation between higher-order kinematic moment $h_{3}$ and V/$σ$ (using the $ξ_{3}$ parameter), and the kinematic mis…
We examine the connection between the properties of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) and the quenching and morphological evolution of central galaxies in the EAGLE and IllustrisTNG simulations. The simulations yield very different median CGM mass fractions, $f_{\rm CGM}$, as a function of halo mass, $M_{200}$, with low-mass haloes being significantly more gas-rich in IllustrisTNG than in EAGLE. Nonetheless, in both cases scatter in $f_{\rm CGM}$ at fixed $M_{200}$ is strongly correlated with the specific star formation rate and the kinematic morphology of central galaxies. The correlations are …
Context: Protostellar jets in high-mass young stellar objects (HMYSOs) play a key role in the understanding of star formation and provide us with an excellent tool to study fundamental properties of HMYSOs. Aims: We aim at studying the physical and kinematic properties of the near-IR (NIR) jet of IRAS\,13481-6124 from au to parsec scales. Methods: Our study includes NIR data from the Very Large Telescope instruments SINFONI, CRIRES, and ISAAC. Information about the source and its immediate environment is retrieved with SINFONI. The technique of spectro-astrometry is performed with CRIRES to st…
We use a suite of idealised N-body simulations to study the impact of spurious heating of star particles by dark matter particles on the kinematics and morphology of simulated galactic discs. We find that spurious collisional heating leads to a systematic increase of the azimuthal velocity dispersion ($σ_ϕ$) of stellar particles and a corresponding decrease in their mean azimuthal velocities ($\overline{v}_ϕ$). The rate of heating is dictated primarily by the number of dark matter halo particles (or equivalently, by the dark matter particle mass at fixed halo mass) and by radial gradients in t…
We derive the photometric, kinematic, and abundance characteristics of 18 star-forming MaNGA galaxies with fairly regular velocity fields and surface brightness distributions and with a large offset between the measured position angles of the major kinematic and photometric axes, dPA > 20 degree. The aim is to examine if there is any other distinctive characteristic common to these galaxies. We found morphological signs of interaction in some (in 11 out of 18) but not in all galaxies. The observed velocity fields show a large variety; the maps of the isovelocities vary from an hourglass-like a…
