We have studied a representative sample of intermediate-mass galaxies at z~1, observed by the kinematic survey KMOS3D. We have re-estimated the kinematical parameters from the published kinematic maps and analysed photometric data from HST to measure optical disk inclinations and PAs. We find that only half of the z~1 galaxies show kinematic properties consistent with rotating disks, using the same classification scheme than that adopted by the KMOS3D team. Because merger orbital motions can also brought rotation, we have also analysed galaxy morphologies from the available HST imagery. Combining these results to those from kinematics, it leads to a full morpho-kinematic classification. To test the robustness of the latter for disentangling isolated disks from mergers, we confronted the results with an analysis of pairs from the open-grism redshift survey 3D-HST. All galaxies found in pairs are affected by either kinematic and/or morphological perturbations. Conversely, all galaxies classified as virialized spirals are found to be isolated. A significant fraction (one fourth) of rotating disks classified from kinematics by the KMOS3D team are found in pairs, which further supports the need for a morpho-kinematic classification. It results that only one third of z~1 galaxies are isolated and virialized spirals, while 58% of them are likely involved in a merger sequence, from first approach to disk rebuilding. The later fraction is in good agreement with the results of semi-empirical ΛCDM models, supporting a merger-dominated hierarchical scenario as being the main driver of galaxy formation at least during the last 8 billion years.
We recently developed an automated method, auto-GMM to decompose simulated galaxies. It extracts kinematic structures in an accurate, efficient, and unsupervised way. We use auto-GMM to study the stellar kinematic structures of disk galaxies from the TNG100 run of IllustrisTNG. We identify four to five structures that are commonly present among the diverse galaxy population. Structures having strong to moderate rotation are defined as cold and warm disks, respectively. Spheroidal structures dominated by random motions are classified as bulges or stellar halos, depending on how tightly bound th…
We investigate the connection between the morphology and internal kinematics of the stellar component of central galaxies with mass $M_\star > {10}^{9.5} {\rm M}_\odot$ in the EAGLE simulations. We compare several kinematic diagnostics commonly used to describe simulated galaxies, and find good consistency between them. We model the structure of galaxies as ellipsoids and quantify their morphology via the ratios of their principal axes. We show that the differentiation of blue star-forming and red quiescent galaxies using morphological diagnostics can be achieved with similar efficacy to the u…

We use optical spectroscopy from VLT/MUSE, as well as photometric observations from HST and VLT/HAWK-I, to study the morpho-kinematics of 17 low mass MACS J0416.1-2403 cluster galaxies at R200 and 5 field galaxies with a redshift of z~0.4. By measuring fluxes of emission lines, we have recovered the star formation rates, gas-phase metallicities and the spatially resolved gas kinematics. We have analysed the structure and morphology of the galaxies from the photometric data, performing a multi-component decomposition into a bulge and a disk. The spatially resolved gas velocity fields were model…
The "kinematic" morphology-density relation for early-type galaxies posits that those galaxies with low angular momentum are preferentially found in the highest-density regions of the universe. We use a large sample of galaxy groups with halo masses 10^12.5 < M_halo < 10^14.5 M_sun/h observed with the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey to examine whether there is a correlation between local environment and rotational support that is independent of stellar mass. We find no compelling evidence for a relationship between the angular momentum content of early-type galaxies and either lo…
Galaxy mergers are important events that can determine the fate of a galaxy by changing its morphology, star-formation activity and mass growth. Merger systems have commonly been identified from their disturbed morphologies, and we now can employ Integral Field Spectroscopy to detect and analyze the impact of mergers on stellar kinematics as well. We visually classified galaxy morphology using deep images ($μ_{\rm r} = 28\,\rm mag\,\, arcsec^{-2}$) taken by the Blanco 4-m telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. In this paper we investigate 63 bright ($M_{\rm r}<-19.3$) spectr…
We present a new study of archival ALMA observations of the CO(2-1) line emission of the host galaxy of quasar RX J1131 at redshift $z$=0.654, lensed by a foreground galaxy. A simple lens model is shown to well reproduce the optical images obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope. Clear evidence for rotation of the gas contained in the galaxy is obtained and a simple rotating disc model is shown to give an excellent overall description of the morpho-kinematics of the source. The possible presence of a companion galaxy suggested by some previous authors is not confirmed. Detailed comparison betwe…
Context. The formation and evolution of galaxies appear linked to the growth of supermassive black holes, as evidenced by empirical scaling relations in nearby galaxies. Understanding this co-evolution over cosmic time requires the revelation of the dynamical state of galaxies and the measurement of the mass of their central black holes (MBH) at a range of cosmic distances. Bright active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are ideal for this purpose. Aims. The High Angular Resolution Monolithic Optical and Near-infrared Integral field spectrograph (HARMONI), the first light integral-field spectrograph for …

We use hydrodynamic cosmological zoom-in simulations from the FIRE project to explore the morphologies and kinematics of fifteen Milky Way (MW)-mass galaxies. Our sample ranges from compact, bulge-dominated systems with 90% of their stellar mass within 2.5 kpc to well-ordered disks that reach $\gtrsim15$ kpc. The gas in our galaxies always forms a thin, rotation-supported disk at $z=0$, with sizes primarily determined by the gas mass. For stars, we quantify kinematics and morphology both via the fraction of stars on disk-like orbits and with the radial extent of the stellar disk. In this mass …
We identify members of 65 open clusters in the solar neighborhood using the machine-learning algorithm StarGO based on Gaia EDR3 data. After adding members of twenty clusters from previous studies (Pang et al. 2021a,b; Li et al. 2021) we obtain 85 clusters, and study their morphology and kinematics. We classify the substructures outside the tidal radius into four categories: filamentary (f1) and fractal (f2) for clusters $<100$ Myr, and halo (h) and tidal-tail (t) for clusters $>100$ Myr. The kinematical substructures of f1-type clusters are elongated; these resemble the disrupted cluster Grou…
The center of the nearby galaxy NGC\,253 hosts a population of more than a dozen super star clusters (SSCs) which are still in the process of forming. The majority of the star formation of the burst is concentrated in these SSCs, and the starburst is powering a multiphase outflow from the galaxy. In this work, we measure the 350~GHz dust continuum emission towards the center of NGC\,253 at 47~milliarcsecond (0.8 pc) resolution using data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We report the detection of 350~GHz (dust) continuum emission in the outflow for the first time, …
We study a sample of 28 S0 galaxies extracted from the integral-field spectroscopic (IFS) survey CALIFA. We combine an accurate two-dimensional (2D) multi-component photometric decomposition with the IFS kinematic properties of their bulges to understand their formation scenario. Our final sample is representative of S0s with high stellar masses ($M_{star}/M_{sun} > 10^{10}$). They lay mainly on the red sequence and live in relatively isolated environments similar to that of the field and loose groups. We use our 2D photometric decomposition to define the size and photometric properties of the…
We present the molecular gas morphology and kinematics of seven nearby Seyfert galaxies obtained from our 230~GHz ALMA observations. The CO J=2-1 kinematics within the inner $\sim30$" ($\lesssim9$~kpc) reveals rotation patterns that have been explored using the Bertola rotation model and a modified version of the Kinemetry package. The latter algorithm reveals various deviations from pure circular rotation in the inner kiloparsec of all seven galaxies, including kinematic twists, decoupled and counter-rotating cores. A comparison of the global molecular gas and stellar kinematics show overall …
The morphological classification of galaxies is considered a relevant issue and can be approached from different points of view. The increasing growth in the size and accuracy of astronomical data sets brings with it the need for the use of automatic methods to perform these classifications. The aim of this work is to propose and evaluate a method for automatic unsupervised classification of kinematic morphologies of galaxies that yields a meaningful clustering and captures the variations of the fundamental properties of galaxies. We obtain kinematic maps for a sample of 2064 galaxies from the…
Based on the stellar orbit distribution derived from orbit-superposition Schwarzschild models, we decompose each of 250 representative present-day galaxies into four orbital components: cold with strong rotation, warm with weak rotation, hot with dominant random motion and counter-rotating (CR). We rebuild the surface brightness ($Σ$) of each orbital component and we present in figures and tables a quantification of their morphologies using the Sersic index \textit{n}, concentration $C = \log{(Σ_{0.1R_e}/Σ_{R_e})}$ and intrinsic flattening $q_{\mathrm{Re}}$ and $q_{\mathrm{Rmax}}$, with $R_e$ …
We present CO(2-1) and adjacent continuum observations of 7 nearby radio-quiet type-2 quasars (QSO2s) obtained with ALMA at ~0.2" resolution (370 pc at z~0.1). The CO morphologies are diverse, including disks and interacting systems. Two of the QSO2s are red early-type galaxies with no CO(2-1) detected. In the interacting galaxies, the central kpc contains 18-25% of the total cold molecular gas, whereas in the spirals it is only 5-12%. J1010+0612 and J1430+1339 show double-peaked CO morphologies which do not have optical counterparts. Based on our analysis of the ionized and molecular kinemati…
We study the z=0 gas kinematics, morphology, and angular momentum content of isolated galaxies in a suite of cosmological zoom-in simulations from the FIRE project spanning $M_{\star}=10^{6-11}M_{\odot}$. Gas becomes increasingly rotationally supported with increasing galaxy mass. In the lowest-mass galaxies ($M_{\star}<10^{8}M_{\odot}$), gas fails to form a morphological disk and is primarily dispersion and pressure supported. At intermediate masses ($M_{\star}=10^{8-10}M_{\odot}$), galaxies display a wide range of gas kinematics and morphologies, from thin, rotating disks, to irregular spher…
The majority of planetary nebulae (PNe) show axisymmetric morphologies, whose causes are not well understood. In this work, we present spatially resolved kinematic observations of 14 Galactic PNe surrounding Wolf-Rayet ([WR]) and weak emission-line stars ($wels$) based on the H$α$ and [N II] emission taken with the Wide Field Spectrograph on the Australian National University 2.3-m telescope. Velocity-resolved channel maps and position--velocity diagrams, together with archival Hubble Space Telescope ($HST$) and ground-based images, are employed to construct three-dimensional morpho-kinematic …
I review the insights emerging from recent large kinematic surveys of galaxies at low redshift, with particular reference to the SAMI, CALIFA and MaNGA surveys. These new observations provide a more comprehensive picture of the angular momentum properties of galaxies over wide ranges in mass, morphology and environment in the present-day universe. I focus on the distribution of angular momentum within galaxies of various types and the relationship between mass, morphology and specific angular momentum. I discuss the implications of the new results for models of galaxy assembly.
We present a comprehensive study of the ionization structure and kinematics of the planetary nebula (PN) NGC40 (a.k.a. the Bow-tie Nebula). A set of narrow-band images obtained with the ALhambra Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera (ALFOSC) at the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) are used to study the turbulent distribution of gas in the main cavity, the ionization stratification and the density of this PN. High-resolution Manchester Echelle Spectrograph (MES) observations obtained at 2.1m telescope of the San Pedro Mártir (SPM) Observatory are used to unveil in great detail the kinematic signat…
We present an Integral Field Unit survey of 73 galaxy clusters and groups with the VIsible Multi Object Spectrograph (VIMOS) on VLT. We exploit the data to determine the H$α$ gas dynamics on kpc-scales to study the feedback processes occurring within the dense cluster cores. We determine the kinematic state of the ionised gas and show that the majority of systems ($\sim$ 2/3) have relatively ordered velocity fields on kpc scales that are similar to the kinematics of rotating discs and are decoupled from the stellar kinematics of the Brightest Cluster Galaxy. The majority of the H$α$ flux ($>$ …
It is generally assumed that galaxies are a bimodal population in both star formation and structure: star-forming galaxies are disks, while passive galaxies host large bulges or are entirely spheroidal. Here, we test this scenario by presenting a full census of the kinematic morphologies of a volume-limited sample of galaxies in the local Universe extracted from the MaNGA galaxy survey. We measure the integrated stellar line-of-sight velocity to velocity dispersion ratio ($V/σ$) for 4574 galaxies in the stellar mass range $9.75 < \log M_{\star}[\rm{M}_{\odot}] < 11.75$. We show that at fixed s…
We present a novel Bayesian method, referred to as Blobby3D, to infer gas kinematics that mitigates the effects of beam smearing for observations using Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS). The method is robust for regularly rotating galaxies despite substructure in the gas distribution. Modelling the gas substructure within the disk is achieved by using a hierarchical Gaussian mixture model. To account for beam smearing effects, we construct a modelled cube that is then convolved per wavelength slice by the seeing, before calculating the likelihood function. We show that our method can model com…
An $m=1$ lopsided asymmetry is common in disc galaxies. Here, we investigate the excitation of an $m=1$ lopsidedness in host galaxies during minor mergers while choosing a set of 1:10 merger models (with varying orbital configurations, morphology of the host galaxy) from the GalMer galaxy merger library. We show that a minor merger triggers a prominent $m=1$ lopsidedness in stars of the host galaxy. The strength of the $m=1$ lopsidedness undergoes a transient amplification phase after each pericenter passage of the satellite, in concordance with past findings of exciting an $m=1$ lopsidedness …
We study the link between the kinematic-morphology of galaxies, as inferred from integral-field stellar kinematics, and their relation between mass and star formation rate (SFR). Our sample consists of $\sim 3200$ galaxies with integral-field spectroscopic data from the MaNGA survey with available determinations of their effective stellar angular momentum within the half-light radius $λ_{R_e}$. We find that for star-forming galaxies, namely along the star formation main sequence (SFMS), the $λ_{R_e}$ values remain large and almost unchanged over about two orders of magnitude in stellar mass, w…

We use the Fundamental Plane (FP) to measure the redshift evolution of the dynamical mass-to-light ratio ($M_{\mathrm{dyn}}/L$) and the dynamical-to-stellar mass ratio ($M_{\mathrm{dyn}}/M_*$). Although conventionally used to study the properties of early-type galaxies, we here obtain stellar kinematic measurements from the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) Survey for a sample of $\sim1400$ massive ($\log( M_*/M_\odot) >10.5$) galaxies at $0.6<z<1.0$ that span a wide range in star formation activity. In line with previous studies, we find a strong evolution in $M_{\mathrm{dyn}}/L…
ALMA observations of CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) emissions of the circumstellar envelope of EP Aqr, an oxygen-rich AGB star, are reported. A thorough analysis of their properties is presented using an original method based on the separation of the data-cube into a low velocity component associated with an equatorial outflow and a faster component associated with a bipolar outflow. A number of important and new results are obtained concerning the distribution in space of the effective emissivity, the temperature, the density and the flux of matter. A mass loss rate of (1.6$\pm$0.4)10$^{-7}$ solar masse…
We use archival ALMA observations of the CO(2-1) and SiO(5-4) molecular line emissions of AGB star R Hya to illustrate the relative contributions of rotation, expansion and line broadening to the morphology and kinematics of the circumstellar envelope (CSE) within some ~70 au (~0.5 arcsec) from the centre of the star. We give evidence for rotation and important line broadening to dominate the inner region, within ~14 au (~100 mas) from the centre of the star. The former is about an axis that projects a few degrees west of north and has a projected rotation velocity of a few km/s. The latter oc…

We analyse new ALMA observations of the $^{29}$SiO ($ν$=0, $J$=8$-$7) and SO$_2$($ν$=0, $34_{3,31}$$-$$34_{2,32}$) line emissions of the circumstellar envelope (CSE) of the oxygen-rich AGB star R Dor. With a spatial resolution of $\sim$2.3 au, they cover distances below $\sim$30 au from the star providing a link between earlier observations and clarifying some open issues. The main conclusions are: 1) Rotation is confined below $\sim$15 au from the star, with velocity reaching a maximum below 10 au and morphology showing no significant disc-like flattening. 2) In the south-eastern quadrant, a …
We present H13CO+ (J=1-0) and HNC (J=1-0) maps of regions in Serpens South, Serpens Main and NGC 1333 containing filaments. We also observe the Serpens regions using H13CN (J=1-0). These dense gas tracer molecular line observations carried out with CARMA have an angular resolution of ~7", a spectral resolution of ~0.16 km/s and a sensitivity of 50-100 mJy/beam. Although the large scale structure compares well with the Herschel dust continuum maps, we resolve finer structure within the filaments identified by Herschel. The H13CO+ emission distribution agrees with the existing CARMA N2H+ (J=1-0)…
Single dish observations of AGB star L$_2$ Pup have revealed exceptionally low mass loss rate and expansion velocity, challenging interpretations in terms of standard wind models. Recent VLT and ALMA observations have drawn a detailed picture of the circumstellar envelope within $\sim$20 au from the centre of the star: a nearly edge-on rotating disc of gas and dust, probably hosting a planetary companion near the star. However, these observations provide no direct information on the wind escaping the gravity of the star. The present article uses ALMA observations of the $^{12,13}$CO(3-2), $^{2…
Morphology of nova ejecta is essential for fully understanding the physical processes involved in nova eruptions. We studied the 3D morphology of the expanding ejecta of the extremely slow nova V1280 Sco with a unique light curve. Synthetic line profile spectra were compared to the observed [O III] 4959, 5007 and [N II] 5755 emission line profiles in order to find the best-fit morphology, inclination angle, and maximum expansion velocity of the ejected shell. We derive the best fitting expansion velocity, inclination, and squeeze as $V_{\rm exp} = 2100^{+100}_{-100}$ \,km\,s$^{-1}$, $i = 80^{+…
