The role of U-wire generated quadrupole like magnetic field configuration on loading of cold $^{87}Rb$ atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT) on atom-chip has been investigated. It is shown by simulations that the quadrupole field profile and the center of the quadrupole field vary depending upon the U-wire current and bias field values. The result of simulations show that the resemblance of generated field configuration to the ideal quadrupole field critically depends on the values of current in U-wire and bias magnetic field. The observed number of trapped atoms in the MOT and its position has also been found to depend on the quadrupole field configuration. The number of trapped atoms in the MOT reaches maximum when the field configuration approaches close to an ideal quadrupole field. This study will help in optimising the number in the MOT before transfer of these cold atoms in the atom-chip wire trap.
Beams of neutral polar molecules in a low-field seeking quantum state can be slowed down using a Stark decelerator, and can subsequently be loaded and confined in electrostatic quadrupole traps. The efficiency of the trap loading process is determined by the ability to couple the decelerated packet of molecules into the trap without loss of molecules and without heating. We discuss the inherent difficulties to obtain ideal trap loading, and describe and compare different trap loading strategies. A new "split-endcap" quadrupole trap design is presented that enables improved trap loading efficie…
Loading an ultra-cold ensemble into a static magnetic trap involves unavoidable loss of phase space density when the gravitational energy dominates the kinetic energy of the ensemble. In such a case the gravitational energy is transformed into heat, making a subsequent evaporation process slower and less efficient. We apply a high phase space loading scheme on a sub-doppler cooled ensemble of Rubidium atoms, with a gravitational energy much higher than its temperature of $1~\rm{μK}$. Using the regular configuration of a quadrupole magnetic trap, but driving unequal currents through the coils t…
We have developed a compact setup which enables loading a magneto-optical trap (MOT) in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) environment. Nearly $1 \times 10^{8}$ atoms of $^{87}Rb$ are trapped in the MOT at $\sim 2 \times 10^{-10}$ Torr base pressure in the chamber. After the MOT loading, we have successfully demonstrated working of quadrupole magnetic trap in this chamber with a lifetime of $\sim 8 $ s
We report a novel approach for preparing a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of $^{87}$Rb atoms using electro-pneumatically driven transfer of atoms into a Quadrupole-Ioffe magnetic trap (QUIC Trap). More than 5$\times$$10^{8}$ atoms from a Magneto-optical trap are loaded into a spherical quadrupole trap and then these atoms are transferred into an Ioffe trap by moving the Ioffe coil towards the center of the quadrupole coil, thereby, changing the distance between quadrupole trap center and the Ioffe coil. The transfer efficiency is more than 80 \%. This approach is different from a conventional …
Compact and robust ion traps for thorium are enabling technology for the next generation of atomic clocks based on a low-energy isomeric transition in the thorium-229 nucleus. We aim at a laser ablation loading of single triply ionized thorium in a radio-frequency electromagnetic linear Paul trap. Detection of ions is based on a modified mass spectrometer and a channeltron with single-ion sensitivity. In this study, we successfully created and detected 232Th+ and 232Th2+ ions from plasma plumes, studied their yield evolution, and compared the loading to a quadrupole ion trap with Yb. We explor…
Scaling up and effective cooling of ions in surface ion trap are central challenges in quantum computing and quantum simulation with trapped ions. In this theoretical study, we propose a versatile surface ion trap. In the manipulation zone of our trap, a symmetric seven-wire geometry enables innate principle-axes rotation of two parallel linear ion chains, which facilitates the cooling of ions along all principle trap axes. To alleviate contaminating the manipulation zone during ion loading, a symmetric five-wire geometry is designed as the loading zone. And a "fork junction" connects the load…
A few 85Rb atoms were trapped in a micron-size magneto-optical trap with a high quadrupole magnetic-field gradient and the number of atoms was precisely controlled by suppressing stochastic loading and loss events via real-time feedback on the magnetic field gradient. The measured occupation probability of single atom was as high as 99%. Atoms up to five were also trapped with high occupation probabilities. The present technique could be used to make a deterministic atom source.
A pulsed beam of ground state OH radicals is slowed down using a Stark decelerator and is subsequently loaded into an electrostatic trap. Characterization of the molecular beam production, deceleration and trap loading process is performed via laser induced fluorescence detection inside the quadrupole trap. Depending on details of the trap loading sequence, typically $10^5$ OH ($X^2Π_{3/2}, J=3/2$) radicals are trapped at a density of around $10^7$ cm$^{-3}$ and at temperatures in the 50-500 mK range. The 1/e trap lifetime is around 1.0 second.
Metastable calcium atoms, produced in a magneto-optic trap (MOT) operating within the singlet system, are continuously loaded into a magnetic trap formed by the magnetic quadrupole field of the MOT. At MOT temperatures of 3 mK and 240 ms loading time we observe 1.1 x 10^8 magnetically trapped 3P2 atoms at densities of 2.4 x 10^8 cm^-3 and temperatures of 0.61 mK. In a modified scheme we first load a MOT for metastable atoms at a temperature of 0.18 mK and subsequently release these atoms into the magnetic trap. In this case 240 ms of loading yields 2.4 x 10^8 trapped 3P2 atoms at a peak densit…
We have realized Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of 87Rb in the F=2, m_F=2 hyperfine substate in a hybrid trap, consisting of a quadrupole magnetic field and a single optical dipole beam. The symmetry axis of the quadrupole magnetic trap coincides with the optical beam axis, which gives stronger axial confinement than previous hybrid traps. After loading 2x10^6 atoms at 14 muK from a quadrupole magnetic trap into the hybrid trap, we perform efficient forced evaporation and reach the onset of BEC at a temperature of 0.5 muK and with 4x10^5 atoms. We also obtain thermal clouds of 1x10^6 atoms b…
We propose two kinds of wire configurations fabricated on an atom chip surface for creating two-dimensional (2D) adiabatic rf guide with an inhomogeneous rf magnetic field and a homogenous dc magnetic field. The guiding state can be selected by changing the detuning between the frequency of rf magnetic field and the resonance frequency of two Zeeman sublevels. We also discuss the optimization of loading efficiency and the trap depth and how to decide proper construction when designing an rf atom chip.
We report an apparatus and method capable of producing Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of ~1x10^6 87Rb atoms, and ultimately designed for sympathetic cooling of 133Cs and the creation of ultracold RbCs molecules. The method combines several elements: i) the large recapture of a magnetic quadrupole trap from a magneto-optical trap, ii) efficient forced RF evaporation in such a magnetic trap, iii) the gain in phase-space density obtained when loading the magnetically trapped atoms into a far red-detuned optical dipole trap and iv) efficient evaporation to BEC within the dipole trap. We demonstr…
We describe the production of large ${}^{23} \mathrm{Na}$ Bose-Einstein condensates in a hybrid trap characterized by a weak magnetic field quadrupole and a tightly focused infrared beam. The use of small magnetic field gradients makes the trap compatible with the state-of-the-art magnetic shields. By taking advantage of the deep cooling and high efficiency of gray molasses to improve the initial trap loading conditions, we produce condensates composed of as much as $7$ million atoms in less than $30 \; \mathrm{s}$.
We propose and analyze neutral atom traps generated by vortices imprinted by magnetic field pulse sequences in type-II superconducting disks and rings. We compute the supercurrent distribution and magnetic field resulting from the vortices in the superconductor. Different patterns of vortices can be written by versatile loading field sequences. We discuss in detail procedures to generate quadrupole traps, self-sufficient traps and ring traps based on superconducting disks and rings. The ease of creating these traps and the low current noise in supercurrent carrying structures makes our approac…
We present measurements of the total elastic and resonant charge-exchange ion-atom collision rate coefficient $k_\mathrm{ia}$ of cold sodium (\ce{Na}) with optically-dark low energy \ce{Na+} ions in a hybrid ion-neutral trap. To determine $k_\mathrm{ia}$, we measured the trap loading and loss from both a \ce{Na} magneto-optical trap (MOT) and a linear radio frequency quadrupole Paul trap. We found the total rate coefficient to be $7.4 \pm 1.9 \times 10^{-8}$ cm$^3$/s for the type I \ce{Na} MOT immersed within an $\approx 140$ K ion cloud and $1.10 \pm 0.25 \times 10^{-7}$ cm$^3$/s for the type…
We report on the loading and trapping of ultracold atoms in a one dimensional permanent magnetic lattice of period 10 micron produced on an atom chip. The grooved structure which generates the magnetic lattice potential is fabricated on a silicon substrate and coated with a perpendicularly magnetized multilayered TbGdFeCo/Cr film of effective thickness 960 nm. Ultracold atoms are evaporatively cooled in a Z-wire magnetic trap and then adiabatically transferred to the magnetic lattice potential by applying an appropriate bias field. Under our experimental conditions trap frequencies of up to 90…
We present a design for a continuous-wave (CW) atom laser on a chip and describe the process used to fabricate the device. Our design aims to integrate quadrupole magnetic guiding of ground state Rb atoms with continuous surface adsorption evaporative cooling to create a continuous Bose-Einstein condensate; out-coupled atoms from the condensate should realize a CW atom laser. We choose a geometry with three wires embedded in a spiral pattern in a silicon subtrate. The guide features an integrated solenoid to mitigate spin-flip losses and provide a tailored longitudinal magnetic field. Our desi…
We design magnetic traps for atoms based on the average magnetic field of vortices induced in a type-II superconducting thin film. This magnetic field is the critical ingredient of the demonstrated vortex-based atom traps, which operate without transport current. We use Bean's critical-state method to model the vortex field through mesoscopic supercurrents induced in the thin strip. The resulting inhomogeneous magnetic fields are studied in detail and compared to those generated by multiple normally-conducting wires with transport currents. Various vortex patterns can be obtained by programmin…
We present a compact experimental apparatus for Bose-Einstein condensation of $^{87}$Rb in the $|F = 2, m_F = +2\rangle$ state. A pre-cooled atomic beam of $^{87}$Rb is obtained by using an unbalanced magneto-optical trap, allowing controlled transfer of trapped atoms from the first vacuum chamber to the science chamber. Here, atoms are transferred to a hybrid trap, as produced by overlapping a magnetic quadrupole trap with a far-detuned optical trap with crossed beam configuration, where forced radiofrequency evaporation is realized. The final evaporation leading to Bose-Einstein condensation…
We report the trapping of ultracold 87Rb atoms in a 0.7 micron-period 2D triangular magnetic lattice on an atom chip. The magnetic lattice is created by a lithographically patterned magnetic Co/Pd multilayer film plus bias fields. Rubidium atoms in the F=1, mF=-1 low-field seeking state are trapped at estimated distances down to about 100 nm from the chip surface and with calculated mean trapping frequencies as high as 800 kHz. The measured lifetimes of the atoms trapped in the magnetic lattice are in the range 0.4 - 1.7 ms, depending on distance from the chip surface. Model calculations sugge…
We describe the fabrication and construction of a setup for creating lattices of magnetic microtraps for ultracold atoms on an atom chip. The lattice is defined by lithographic patterning of a permanent magnetic film. Patterned magnetic-film atom chips enable a large variety of trapping geometries over a wide range of length scales. We demonstrate an atom chip with a lattice constant of 10 $μ$m, suitable for experiments in quantum information science employing the interaction between atoms in highly-excited Rydberg energy levels. The active trapping region contains lattice regions with square …
