A new form Time Crystal has been proposed and some of its consequences have been studied. The model is a generalization of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology endowed with noncommutative geometry corrections. In the mini-superspace approach the scale factor undergoes the time periodic behavior, or Sisyphus dynamics, which allows us to interpret this Cosmological Time Crystal as a physically motivated toy model to simulate cyclic universe.
Analyzing our model purely from Time Crystal perspective reveals many novelties such as a complex singularity structure (more complicated than the previously encountered swallowtail catastrophe) and a richer form of Sisyphus dynamics. In the context of cosmology, the system can serve as a toy model in which, apart from inducing a form of cyclic universe feature, it is possible to generate an arbitrarily small positive effective Cosmological Constant. We stress that the model is purely geometrical without introduction of matter degrees of freedom.
General ideas of gauge/gravity duality allow for the possibility of time dependent solutions that interpolate between a perturbative gauge theory phase and a weakly curved string/gravity phase. Such a scenario applied to cosmology would exhibit a non-geometric phase before the big bang. We investigate a toy model for such a cosmology, whose endpoint is the classical limit of the two-dimensional non-critical string. We discuss the basic dynamics of this model, in particular how it evolves toward the double scaling limit required for stringy dynamics. We further comment on the physics that will …
Friedmann-Lemaitre universes driven by a scalar field, spatially closed and bouncing, were recently studied by Martin and Peter in [1], with the conclusion that the spectrum of their large scale matter perturbations was generically modified when going through the bounce. In this Note we give the properties of the scalar field potentials which underly such models.
We propose a toy model for the origin of the universe, where the scale-invariant fluctuations are generated together with the quantum creation process of the universe. The fluctuations arise inside an instanton in the Euclidean domain of time. In the Lorentzian point of view, the universe emerges with passive, coherent and scale-invariant fluctuations present from the beginning, without the need of inflation or a bounce. For this mechanism to work, we need anisotropic scaling in space and time, which is realized in a toy model of Horava-Lifshitz gravity with a Lifshitz scalar field.
We are interested by the study of several toy models of the Universe in presence of interacting quintessence DE models. Models are considered in the cosmology with an Effective varying $Λ$-Term in Lyra Manifold. The motivation of the phenomenological models discussed in this paper is to obtain corresponding models to describe and understand an accelerated expansion of the Universe for the later stage of evolution. Phenomenology of the models describes by the phenomenological forms of $Λ(t)$ ($8 πG =c =1$). Concerning to the mathematical hardness we discuss results numerically and graphically. …
We consider alternative inflationary cosmologies in massive gravity with degenerate reference metrics and study the feasibilities of the emergent universe scenario, bouncing and cyclic universes. We focus on the construction of the Einstein static universe, classes of exact solutions of bouncing and cyclic universes in degenerate massive gravity. We further study the stabilities of the Einstein static universe against both homogeneous and inhomogeneous scalar perturbations and give the parameters region for a stable Einstein static universe.
This article motivated by the recent articles and results of two authors. Recently, J. Sadeghi and H. Farahani presented a work [1], where they include viscosity and analyze general model, by this way they extended models considered by M. Khurshudyan [2] and [3]. In this article, We tempt to consider varying Modified Chaplygin gas model in case of variable $G$ and $Λ$. It is well known, that varying $G$ and $Λ$ gives rise to modified field equations and modified conservation laws. We will consider two different toy models. First model is a Universe with one component phenomenological gas of ou…
Oscillating or cyclic models of the universe were inspired by Friedmann's seminal paper of 1922. The model supposes a closed universe. In this work, we study Friedmann closed universe using the adiabatic invariant approach. We start revisiting the cosmological force proposed by N. Rosen and derive the Lagrangian density from Rosen's concepts of cosmological force. Importantly, we introduce the Noether gauge symmetry followed by the Rund-Traumann identity (RTI) and adiabatic invariant approach to examine the cyclic models. We consider a single component form of relativistic matter (stiff matter…
We construct a quantum measure on the power set of non-cyclic oriented graphs of N points, drawing inspiration from 1-dimensional directed percolation. Quantum interference patterns lead to properties which do not appear to have any analogue in classical percolation. Most notably, instead of the single phase transition of classical percolation, the quantum model displays two distinct crossover points. Between these two points, spacetime questions such as "does the network percolate" have no definite or probabilistic answer.
A value of the cosmological constant in a toy model of the five-dimensional universe is calculated in such a manner that it remains in agreement with both astronomical observations and the quantum field theory concerning the zero-point fluctuations of the vacuum. The (negative) cosmological constant is equal to the inverse of the Planck length squared, which means that in the toy model the vanishing of the observed value of the cosmological constant is a consequence of the existence of an energy cutoff exactly at the level of the Planck scale. In turn, a model for both a virtual and a real par…
Phase-plane stability analysis of a dynamical system describing the Universe as a two-fraction fluid containing baryonic dust and real virial gas quintessence is presented. Existence of a stable periodic solution experiencing inflationary periods is shown. A van der Waals quintessence model is revisited and cyclic Universe solution again found.
We present a closed bouncing universe model where the value of coupling constants is set by the dynamics of a ghost-like dilatonic scalar field. We show that adding a periodic potential for the scalar field leads to a cyclic Friedmann universe where the values of the couplings vary randomly from one cycle to the next. While the shuffling of values for the couplings happens during the bounce, within each cycle their time-dependence remains safely within present observational bounds for physically-motivated values of the model parameters. Our model presents an alternative to solutions of the fin…
We track the evolution of entropy and black holes in a cyclic universe that undergoes repeated intervals of expansion followed by slow contraction and a smooth (non-singular) bounce. In this kind of cyclic scenario, there is no big crunch and no chaotic mixmaster behavior. We explain why the entropy following each bounce is naturally partitioned into near-maximal entropy in the matter-radiation sector and near-minimal in the gravitational sector, satisfying the Weyl curvature conditions conjectured to be essential for a cosmology consistent with observations. As a result, this kind of cyclic u…
In the present article the thermodynamic results of the Lee-Wick partner infested universe have been applied in a toy model where there is one Lee-Wick partner to each of the standard model particle and more over the longitudinal degrees of freedom of the massive partners of the standard massless gauge bosons are neglected at high temperatures. For practical purposes, the chiral fermionic sector of Lee-wick theories requires two Lee-Wick partners per fermion which opens up the possibility for a negative energy density of the early universe. A toy Lee-Wick model with one fermionic partner relax…
We shall present a model of the "cyclic universe" that can be constructed only by assuming a minimal set of properties of string theory. We clarify our viewpoint of the cyclic universe and show some attempts to mateliarize the idea as field theoretical manner.
We study different aspects of the Hořava-Lifshitz inspired Bianchi-II cosmology and its relations with the mixmaster universe model. First, we present exact solutions for a toy model, where only the cubic in spatial curvature terms are present in the action; then we briefly discuss some exotic singularities, which can appear in this toy model. We study also the toy model where only the quadratic in spatial curvature terms are present in the action. We establish relations between our results and those obtained by using the Hamiltonian formalism. Finally, we apply the results obtained by studyin…
In this paper, we study the possibility of model building of cyclic universe with Quintom matter in the framework of Loop Quantum Cosmology. After a general demonstration, we provide two examples, one with double-fluid and another double-scalar field, to show how such a scenario is obtained. Analytical and numerical calculations are both presented in the paper.
Loop quantum gravity introduces strong non-perturbative modifications to the dynamical equations in the semi-classical regime, which are responsible for various novel effects, including resolution of the classical singularity in a Friedman universe. Here we investigate the modifications for the case of a cyclic universe potential, assuming that we can apply the four-dimensional loop quantum formalism within the effective four-dimensional theory of the cyclic scenario. We find that loop quantum effects can dramatically alter the near-collision dynamics of the cyclic scenario. In the kinetic-dom…
We address two questions about the past for infinitely cyclic cosmology. The first is whether it can contain an infinite length null geodesic into the past in view of the Borde-Guth-Vilenkin (BGV) "no-go" theorem, The second is whether, given that a small fraction of spawned universes fail to cycle, there is an adequate probability for a successful universe after an infinite time. We give positive answers to both questions then show that in infinite cyclicity the total number of universes has been infinite for an arbitrarily long time.
In this paper, we investigate the effects of a new version of the generalized uncertainty principle (modified GUP) on the dynamics of the Universe. As the modified GUP will modify the relation between the entropy and area of the apparent horizon, it will also deform the Friedmann equations within Jacobson's approach. We explicitly find these deformed Friedmann equations governing the modified GUP-corrected dynamics of such a Universe. It is shown that the modified GUP-deformed Jacobson's approach implies an upper bound for the density of such a Universe. The Big Bang singularity can therefore …
We discuss how a cyclic model for the flat universe can be constructively derived from Loop Quantum Gravity. This model has a lower bounce, at small values of the scale factor, which shares many similarities with that of Loop Quantum Cosmology. We find that quantum gravity corrections can be also relevant at energy densities much smaller than the Planckian one and that they can induce an upper bounce at large values of the scale factor.
We perform the phase space analysis in terms of the linearization technique in the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with the softly broken detailed balance condition. It can be shown that the bouncing universe appears only for the positive spatial curvature of $k=+1$, and it is possible to obtain oscillating universe with the help of the negative dark radiation and the negative cosmological constant.
In infinitely cyclic cosmology past eras are discussed using set theory and transfinite numbers. One consistent scenario, already in the literature, is where there is always a countably infinite number, $\aleph_0$, of universes and no big bang. I describe here an alternative where the present number of universes is $\aleph_0$ and in the infinite past there was only a finite number of universes. In this alternative model it is also possible that there was no big bang.
Cyclic models of the universe have the advantage of avoiding initial conditions problems related to postulating any sort of beginning in time. To date, the only known viable examples of cyclic models have been ekpyrotic. In this paper, we show that the recently proposed anamorphic scenario can also be made cyclic. The key to the cyclic completion is a classically stable, non-singular bounce. Remarkably, even though the bounce construction was originally developed to connect a period of contraction with a period of expansion both described by Einstein gravity, we show here that it can naturally…
We show that the inclusion of simple anisotropic pressures stops the isotropic Friedmann universe being a stable attractor as an initial or final singularity is approached when pressures can exceed the energy density. This shows that the situation with isotropic pressures, studied earlier in the context of cyclic and ekpyrotic cosmologies, is not generic, and Kasner-like behaviour occurs when simple pressure anisotropies are present. We find all the asymptotic behaviours and determine the dynamics when the anisotropic principal pressures are proportional to the density. We expect distortions a…
In this paper we study the cosmological evolution of the holographic dark energy in a cyclic universe, generalizing the model of holographic dark energy proposed by Li. The holographic dark energy with $c<1$ can realize a quintom behavior; namely, it evolves from a quintessence-like component to a phantom-like one. The holographic phantom energy density grows rapidly and dominates the late-time expanding phase, helping realize a cyclic universe scenario in which the high energy regime is modified by the effects of quantum gravity, causing a turnaround (and a bounce) of the universe. The dynami…
For models of gravity coupled to hyperbolic sigma models, such as the metric-scalar sector of IIB supergravity, we show how smooth trajectories in the `augmented target space' connect FLRW cosmologies to non-extremal D-instantons through a cosmological singularity. In particular, we find closed cyclic universes that undergo an endless sequence of big-bang to big-crunch cycles separated by instanton `phases'. We also find `big-bounce' universes in which a collapsing closed universe bounces off its cosmological singularity to become an open expanding universe.
Black holes pose a serious problem in the cyclic or oscillating cosmology. It is speculated that, in the cyclic universe with phantom turnarounds, black holes will be torn apart by the phantom energy before turnaround before they can create any problems. In this paper, using the mechanism of the phantom accretion onto black holes, we find that black holes do not disappear before the phantom turnaround. But the remanent black holes will not cause any problems due to the Hawking evaporation.
Combining intervals of ekpyrotic (ultra-slow) contraction with a (non-singular) classical bounce naturally leads to a novel cyclic theory of the universe in which the Hubble parameter, energy density and temperature oscillate periodically, but the scale factor grows by an exponential factor from one cycle to the next. The resulting cosmology not only resolves the homogeneity, isotropy, flatness and monopole problems and generates a nearly scale invariant spectrum of density perturbations, but it also addresses a number of age-old cosmological issues that big bang inflationary cosmology does no…
We propose the reconstruction of $F(R)$ gravity in such a way that corresponding theory admits cyclic and ekpyrotic universe solutions. The number of explicit examples of such $F(R)$ model is found. The comparison with the reconstructed scalar-tensor theory is made. We also present $F(R)$ gravity which provides the little rip evolution and gives the realistic gravitational alternative for $Λ$CDM cosmology. The time for little rip dissolution of bound structures in such theory is estimated. We demonstrate that transformed little rip $F(R)$ solution becomes qualitatively different cosmological s…
In this web note, we reply to a recent paper, gr-qc/0404126, confirming a previous work of ours in which a cosmological bouncing phase was shown to have the ability of modifying the spectrum of primordial perturbations (PRD 68, 103517 2003), but challenging its physical conditions of validity. Explicitly, Ref. gr-qc/0404126, besides pretending our Taylor series expansion of the scale factor close to the bounce amounts to choosing a family of polynomial scale factors, also claims that the bounce affects the spectrum only if the mass scale of the scalar field driving the dynamics is of the order…
Cyclic cosmology, in which the universe will experience alternating periods of gravitational collapse and expansion, provides an interesting understanding of the early universe and is described as "The Phoenix Universe". In usual expectation, the cyclic universe should be homogeneous, however, with studying the cosmological perturbations, we find that the amplification of curvature perturbations on the large scale may rip the homogeneous universe into a fissiparous multiverse after one or several cycles. Thus, we suggest that the cyclic universe not only rebirths in the "fire" and will never e…
Cosmological hysteresis is a purely thermodynamical phenomenon caused by the gradient in pressure, hence the characteristic equation of state during the expansion and contraction phases of the universe are different, provided that the universe bounces and recollapses. During hysteresis pressure asymmetry is created due to the presence of a single scalar field in the dynamical process. Also such an interesting scenario has vivid implications in cosmology when applied to variants of modified gravity models described within the framework of membrane paradigm. Cyclic universe along with scalar fie…
We investigate the full 5D dynamics of general braneworld models. Without making any further assumptions we show that cyclic behavior can arise naturally in a fraction of physically accepted solutions. The model does not require brane collisions, which in the stationary case remain fixed, and cyclicity takes place on the branes. We indicate that the cosmological constants play the central role for the realization of cyclic solutions and we show that its extremely small value on the observable universe makes the period of the cycles and the maximum scale factor astronomically large.
The no-boundary proposal provides a compelling theory for the initial conditions of our universe. We study the implications of such initial conditions for ekpyrotic and cyclic cosmologies. These cosmologies allow for the existence of a new type of "ekpyrotic instanton", which describes the creation of a universe in the ekpyrotic contraction phase. Remarkably, we find that the ekpyrotic attractor can explain how the universe became classical. In a cyclic context, in addition to the ekpyrotic instantons there exist de Sitter-like instantons describing the emergence of the universe in the dark en…
We introduce a string-inspired model for a bouncing/cyclic universe, utilizing the scalar-tachyon coupling as well as contribution from curvature in a closed universe. The universe undergoes the locked inflation, tachyon matter dominated rolling expansion, turnaround and contraction, as well as the subsequent deflation and "bounce" in each cycle of the cosmological evolution. We perform extensive analytic and numerical studies of the above evolution process. The minimum size of the universe is nonzero for generic initial values. The smooth bounce are made possible because of the negative contr…
We propose a new type of cosmological model in which it is postulated that not only the temperature but also the curvature is limited by the mass scale of the Hagedorn temperature. We find that the big bang of this universe is smoothly connected to the big crunch of the previous universe through a Hagedorn universe, in which the temperature and curvature remain very close to their limiting values. In this way, we obtain the picture of a cyclic universe. By estimating the entropy gained in each big crunch and big bang, we reach the conclusion that our universe has repeated this process about fo…
In the present paper we study the evolution of the modes of a scalar field in a cyclic cosmology. In order to keep the discussion clear, we study the features of a scalar field in a toy model, a Friedman-Robertson-Walker universe with a periodic scale factor, in which the universe expands, contracts and bounces infinite times, in the approximation in which the dynamic features of this universe are driven by some external factor, without the backreaction of the scalar field under study. In particular, we show that particle production exhibits features of the cyclic cosmology. Also, by studying …
We study the behaviour of cosmic string networks in contracting universes, and discuss some of their possible consequences. We note that there is a fundamental time asymmetry between defect network evolution for an expanding universe and a contracting universe. A string network with negligible loop production and small-scale structure will asymptotically behave during the collapse phase as a radiation fluid. In realistic networks these two effects are important, making this solution only approximate. We derive new scaling solutions describing this effect, and test them against high-resolution …
In the Ijjas-Steinhardt cyclic model, the universe passes through phases dominated by radiation, matter, and a dark energy scalar field, with the value of the scale factor increasing with each cycle. Since each cycle terminates in a finite time, it is straightforward to calculate the fraction of time that the universe spends in a state for which the matter and dark energy densities have comparable magnitudes; when this fraction is large, it can be taken as a solution of the coincidence problem. This solution of the coincidence problem requires a relatively short lifetime for each cycle, but un…
Besides the purely digital or analog interpretation of reality there is a third possibility which incorporates important aspects of both. This is the cyclic formulation of elementary systems, in which elementary particles are represented as classical strings vibrating in compact space-time dimensions with periodic boundary conditions. We will address these cyclic solutions as "de Broglie internal clocks". They constitute the deterministic gears of a consistent semi-classical description of quantum relativistic physics, providing in addition an appealing formulation of the notion of time.
One of the challenges of constructing a successful cyclic universe scenario is to be able to incorporate the second law of thermodynamics which typically leads to Tolman's problem of ever shrinking cycles. In this paper we construct a non-singular toy model where as the cycles shrink in the past they also spend more and more time in the entropy conserving Hagedorn phase. Thus in such a scenario the entropy asymptotes to a finite non-zero constant in the infinite past. The universe ``emerges'' from a small (string size) geodesically complete quasi-periodic space-time. This paradigm also natural…
In this paper we discuss the properties of the quasi-steady state cosmological model (QSSC) developed in 1993 in its role as a cyclic model of the universe driven by a negative energy scalar field. We discuss the origin of such a scalar field in the primary creation process first described by F. Hoyle and J. V. Narlikar forty years ago. It is shown that the creation processes which takes place in the nuclei of galaxies are closely linked to the high energy and explosive phenomena, which are commonly observed in galaxies at all redshifts. The cyclic nature of the universe provides a natural lin…
We address how to construct an infinitely cyclic universe model. A major consideration is to make the entropy cyclic which requires the entropy to be reset to zero in each cycle expansion to turnaround, to contraction, to bounce, etc. Here we reset entropy at the turnaround by selecting the introverse (visible universe) from the extroverse which is generated by the accelerated expansion. In the model, the observed homogeneity is explained by the low entropy at the bounce, The observed flatness arises from the contraction together with the reduction in size between the expanding and contracting…
Recent advances in understanding the propagation of perturbations through the transition from big crunch to big bang (esp. Tolley et al. hep-th/0306109) make it possible for the first time to consider the full set of phenomenological constraints on the scalar field potential in cyclic models of the universe. We show that cyclic models require a comparable degree of tuning to that needed for inflationary models. The constraints are reduced to a set of simple design rules including "fast-roll" parameters analogous to the "slow-roll" parameters in inflation.
Cosmological models involving a bounce from a contracting to an expanding universe can address the standard cosmological puzzles and generate "primordial" density perturbations without the need for inflation. Some such models, in particular the ekpyrotic and cyclic models that we focus on, fit rather naturally into string theory. We discuss a number of topics related to these models: the reasoning that leads to the ekpyrotic phase, the predictions for upcoming observations, the differences between singular and non-singular models of the bounce as well as the predictive and explanatory power of…
We point out that the standard formulation of the cosmological constant problem itself is problematic since it is trying to apply the very large scale homogeneous cosmological model to very small (Planck) scale phenomenon. At small scales, both the spacetime and the vacuum stress energy are highly inhomogeneous and wildly fluctuating. This is a version of Wheeler's "spacetime foam". We show that this "foamy" structure would produce a large positive contribution to the average macroscopic spatial curvature of the Universe. In order to cancel this contribution to match the observation, the usual…
This paper concerns the so-called cosmological constant problem. In order to solve it, we propose a toy model providing an extension of the dimensionality of spacetime, with an additional spatial dimension which is macroscopically unobservable. The toy model introduces no corrections to most predictions of the "standard" general relativity regarding, among others, the so-called "five tests of general relativity". However, it seems that the toy model could provide an explanation to the flatness of circular velocity curves of spiral galaxies without introducing any dark matter. The proposed mode…
We propose a cosmological model in which the universe undergoes an endless sequence of cosmic epochs each beginning with a `bang' and ending in a `crunch.' The temperature and density are finite at each transition from crunch to bang. Instead of having an inflationary epoch, each cycle includes a period of slow accelerated expansion (as recently observed) followed by slow contraction. The combination produces the homogeneity, flatness, density fluctuations and energy needed to begin the next cycle.
Recently, it has been noticed that the amplification of the amplitude of curvature perturbation cycle by cycle can lead to a cyclic multiverse scenario, in which the number of universes increases cycle by cycle. However, this amplification will also inevitably induce either the ultimate end of corresponding cycle, or the resulting spectrum of perturbations inside corresponding universe is not scale invariant, which baffles the existence of observable universes. In this paper, we propose a design of a cyclic multiverse, in which the observable universe can emerges naturally. The significance of…
Based on concepts drawn from the ekpyrotic scenario and M-theory, we elaborate our recent proposal of a cyclic model of the Universe. In this model, the Universe undergoes an endless sequence of cosmic epochs which begin with the Universe expanding from a `big bang' and end with the Universe contracting to a `big crunch.' Matching from `big crunch' to `big bang' is performed according to the prescription recently proposed with Khoury, Ovrut and Seiberg. The expansion part of the cycle includes a period of radiation and matter domination followed by an extended period of cosmic acceleration at …
We discuss a cyclic cosmology in which the visible universe, or introverse, is all that is accessible to an observer while the extroverse represents the total spacetime originating from the time when the dark energy began to dominate. It is argued that entanglement entropy of the introverse is the more appropriate quantity to render infinitely cyclic, rather than the entropy of the total universe. Since vanishing entanglement entropy implies disconnected spacetimes, at the turnaround when the introverse entropy is zero the disconnected extroverse can be jettisoned with impunity.
Inflation has been the leading early universe scenario for two decades, and has become an accepted element of the successful `cosmic concordance' model. However, there are many puzzling features of the resulting theory. It requires both high energy and low energy inflation, with energy densities differing by a hundred orders of magnitude. The questions of why the universe started out undergoing high energy inflation, and why it will end up in low energy inflation, are unanswered. Rather than resort to anthropic arguments, we have developed an alternative cosmology, the Cyclic universe, in whic…
Following up a recent proposal \cite{BF} for a cyclic model based on phantom dark energy, we examine the content of the contracting universe (cu) and its entropy $S_{cu}$. We find that beyond dark energy the universe contains on average zero or at most a single photon which if present immediately after turnaround has infinitesimally energy which subsequently blue shifts to produce $e^+e^-$ pairs. These statements are independent of the equation of state $ω= p/ρ$ of dark energy provided $ω< -1$. Thus $S_{cu} = 0$ and if observations confirm $ω< -1$ the entropy problem is solved. We discuss the …
Einstein-Cartan theory is an extension of the standard formulation of General Relativity characterized by a non-vanishing torsion. The latter is sourced by the matter fields via the spin tensor, and its effects are expected to be important at very high spin densities. In this work we analyze in detail the physics of Einstein-Cartan theory with Dirac and Maxwell fields minimally coupled to the spacetime torsion. This breaks the $U(1)$ gauge symmetry, which is suggested by the possibility of a torsion-induced phase transition in the early Universe. The resulting Dirac-like and Maxwell-like equat…
We study a model of a cyclic, spatially homogeneous, anisotropic 'mixmaster' universe of Bianchi type IX, containing a radiation field with non-comoving ('tilted' with respect to the tetrad frame of reference) velocities and vorticity. We employ a combination of numerical and approximate analytic methods to investigate the consequences of the second law of thermodynamics on the evolution. We model a smooth cycle-to-cycle evolution of the mixmaster universe, bouncing at a finite minimum, by the device of adding a comoving 'ghost' field with negative energy density. In the absence of a cosmologi…
