In this paper we study the cooperation between coherent control and noises in open spin systems, aiming to demonstrate that such cooperation can provide new possibilities for parametrization in quantum metrology. The cooperative scheme proposed here outperforms the standard scheme, with higher precision achieved. More specifically, we illustrate the effect of cooperative interaction between coherent control and noises in conventional single-spin systems described by Lindblad master equations, with the magnitude of a magnetic field taken as the parameter to be estimated and encoded in the noisy dynamics besides the Hamiltonian. The scenarios of both spontaneous emission and dephasing noise have been analyzed, where the associated quantum Fisher information has been given. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that in the realm where quantum metrology is mostly applied in practice, the precision limit under the cooperative scheme in the presence of noises can surpass the ultimate precision limit under the unitary dynamics. On the other hand, multiple-spin systems have also been considered. We show that the coupling between different spins can help realize non-local parametrization under the cooperative scheme, with the ground state made entangled. This thus leads to the improvement of precision limit, which has been proved and visualized in our paper.
Modular values are quantities that described by pre- and postselected states of quantum systems like weak values but are different from them: The associated interaction is not necessary to be weak. We discuss an optimal modular-value-based measurement with a spin coherent pointer: A quantum system is exposed to a field in which strength is to be estimated through its modular value. We consider two cases, with a two-dimensional and a higher-dimensional pointer, and evaluate the quantum Fisher information. The modular-value-based measurement has no merit in the former case, while its sensitivity…
We investigate the advantage of coherent superposition of two different coded channels in quantum metrology. In a continuous variable system, we show that the Heisenberg limit $1/N$ can be beaten by the coherent superposition without the help of indefinite causal order. And in parameter estimation, we demonstrate that the strategy with the coherent superposition can perform better than the strategy with quantum \textsc{switch} which can generate indefinite causal order. We analytically obtain the general form of estimation precision in terms of the quantum Fisher information and further prove …

We use coherent states as trial states for a variational approach to study a system of a finite number of three-level atoms interacting in a dipolar approximation with a one-mode electromagnetic field. The atoms are treated as semi-distinguishable using different cooperation numbers and representations of SU(3). We focus our analysis on the quantum phases of the system as well as the behavior of the most relevant observables near the phase transitions. The results are computed for all three possible configurations ($Ξ$, $Λ$ and $V$) of the three-level atoms.
We investigate an optimal distance of two components in an entangled coherent state for quantum phase estimation in lossy interferometry. The optimal distance is obtained by an economical point, representing the quantum Fisher information that we can extract per input energy. Maximizing the formula of the quantum Fisher information over an input mean photon number, we show that, as the losses of the interferometer increase, it can be more beneficial to prepare an initially entangled coherent state that is less entangled. This represents that the optimal distance of the two-mode components decr…
A central feature of quantum metrology is the possibility of Heisenberg scaling, a quadratic improvement over the limits of classical statistics. This scaling, however, is notoriously fragile to noise. While for some noise types it can be restored through error correction, for other important types, such as dephasing, the Heisenberg scaling appears to be irremediably lost. Here we show that this limitation can sometimes be lifted if the experimenter has the ability to probe physical processes in a coherent superposition of alternative configurations. As a concrete example, we consider the prob…

We analyze the properties of a pulsed Coherent Population Trapping protocol that uses a controlled decay from the excited state in a $Λ$-level scheme. We study this problem analytically and numerically and find regimes where narrow transmission, absorption, or fluorescence spectral lines occur. We then look for optimal frequency measurements using these spectral features by computing the Allan deviation in the presence of ground state decoherence and show that the protocol is on a par with Ramsey-CPT. We discuss possible implementations with ensembles of alkali atoms and single ions and demons…
Two-photon absorption (TPA) is of fundamental importance in super-resolution imaging and spectroscopy. Its nonlinear character allows for the prospect of using quantum resources, such as entanglement, to improve measurement precision or to gain new information on, e.g., ultrafast molecular dynamics. Here, we establish the metrological properties of nonclassical squeezed light sources for precision measurements of TPA cross sections. We find that there is no fundamental limit for the precision achievable with squeezed states in the limit of very small cross sections. Considering the most releva…
Quantum measurements have been intensively researched over decades due to quantum advantage of Heisenberg limit beating the standard quantum limit toward potential applications of quantum metrology. The kernel of quantum measurements is in the quantum correlation between bipartite photon pairs or squeezed light quenched by one parameter over corresponding noncommuting variable satisfying Heisenberg uncertainty principle. As a result, quantum measurements bring a quantum gain of the square root law in measurement sensitivity. Photonic de Broglie waves (PBW) have been the key feature of such a g…
In bosonic quantum metrology, the estimate of a loss parameter is typically performed by means of pure states, such as coherent, squeezed or entangled states, while mixed thermal probes are discarded for their inferior performance. Here we show that thermal sources with suitable correlations can be engineered in such a way to approach, or even surpass, the error scaling of coherent states in the presence of general Gaussian decoherence. Our findings pave the way for practical quantum metrology with thermal sources in optical instruments (e.g., photometers) or at different wavelengths (e.g., fa…
We study the sensitivity of phase estimation in a lossy Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) using two general, and practical, resources generated by a laser and a nonlinear optical medium with passive optimal elements, which are readily available in the laboratory: One is a two-mode separable coherent and squeezed vacuum state at a beam splitter and the other is a two-mode squeezed vacuum state. In view of the ultimate precision given by quantum Fisher information, we show that the two-mode squeezed vacuum state can achieve a lower bound of estimation error than the coherent and squeezed vacuum …
The Heisenberg limit is the superior precision available by entanglement sensors. However, entanglementis fragile against dephasing, and there is no known quantum metrology protocol that can achieve Heisenberg limited sensitivity with the presence of independent dephasing. Here, we show that the Heisenberg limit is attainable under the effect of independent dephasing under conditions where the probe qubits decohere due to both target fields and local environments. To detect the target fields, we exploit the entanglement properties to decay much faster than the classical states due to collectiv…
Chemical chain reactions are known to enable extremely sensitive detection schemes in chemical, biological, and medical analysis, and have even been used in the search for dark matter. Here we show that coherent, ultracold chemical reactions harbor great potential for quantum metrology: In an atom-molecule Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), a weak external perturbation can modify the reaction dynamics and lead to the coherent creation of molecules in an atom-dominant regime which can be selectively detected with modern spectroscopic techniques. This promises to substantially improve the viability…
These notes summarize lectures given at the 2019 Les Houches summer school on Quantum Information Machines. They describe and review an application of quantum metrology concepts to searches for ultralight dark matter. In particular, for ultralight dark matter that couples as a weak classical force to a laboratory harmonic oscillator, quantum squeezing benefits experiments in which the mass of the dark matter particle is unknown. This benefit is present even if the oscillatory dark matter signal is much more coherent than the harmonic oscillator that it couples to, as is the case for microwave …
We report an experimental investigation of the role of measurement in quantum metrology when the states of the probes are mixed. In particular, we investigated optimized local measurements and general global projective measurements, involving entangling operations, on noisy Werner states of polarization entangled photons. We demonstrate experimentally that global measurement presents an advantage in parameter estimation with respect to the optimized local strategy. Moreover, the global strategy provides unambiguous information about the parameter of interest even when the amount of noise is no…
We study the sensitivity of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer that contains in addition to the phase shifter a non-linear element. By including both elements in a cavity or a loop that the light transverses many times, a non-linear kicked version of the interferometer arises. We study its sensitivity as function of the phase shift, the kicking strength, the maximally reached average number of photons, and damping due to photon loss for an initial coherent state. We find that for vanishing damping Heisenberg-limited scaling of the sensitivity arises if squeezing dominates the total photon number. F…
Quantum coherence plays a fundamental and operational role in different areas of physics. A resource theory has been developed to characterize the coherence of distinguishable particles systems. Here we show that indistinguishability of identical particles is a source of coherence, even when they are independently prepared. In particular, under spatially local operations, states that are incoherent for distinguishable particles, can be coherent for indistinguishable particles under the same procedure. We present a phase discrimination protocol, in which we demonstrate the operational advantage…
Coherence has been remaining a key resource for numerous applications of quantum physics ranging from quantum metrology to quantum information. Here, we report a theoretical work on how maximally created coherence results in the squeezing of cavity field coupled to a coherently driven single quantum dot. We employ a recently developed polaron master equation theory for accurately incorporating the impact of exciton-phonon coupling on squeezing.
Quantum metrology utilizes quantum effects to reach higher precision measurements of physical quantities compared with their classical counterparts. However the ubiquitous decoherence obstructs its application. Recently, non-Markovian effects are shown to be effective in performing quantum optical metrology under locally dissipative environments\cite{PhysRevLett.123.040402}. However, the mechanism is still rather hazy. Here, we uncover the reason why forming a bound state can protect the quantumness against a dissipative ambient via the quantum Fisher information of entangled coherent states. …

In multiparameter quantum metrology, the weighted-arithmetic-mean error of estimation is often used as a scalar cost function to be minimized during design optimization. However, other types of mean error can reveal different facets of permissible error combination. By introducing the weighted $f$-mean of estimation error and quantum Fisher information, we derive various quantum Cramér-Rao bounds on mean error in a very general form and also give their refined versions with complex quantum Fisher information matrices. We show that the geometric- and harmonic-mean quantum Cramér-Rao bounds can …
The quantum Fisher information (QFI) in SU(2) and SU(1,1) interferometers was considered, and the QFI-only calculation was overestimated. In general, the phase estimation as a two-parameter estimation problem, and the quantum Fisher information matrix (QFIM) is necessary. In this paper, we theoretically generalize the model developed by Escher et al [Nature Physics 7, 406 (2011)] to the QFIM case with noise and study the ultimate precision limits of SU(2) and SU(1,1) interferometers with photon losses because photon losses as a very usual noise may happen to the phase measurement process. Analyses based on quantum metrology have shown that the ability to localize the positions of two incoherent point sources can be significantly enhanced through the use of mode sorting. Here we theoretically and experimentally investigate the effect of partial coherence on the sub-diffraction limit localization of two sources based on parity sorting. With the prior information of a negative and real-valued degree of coherence, higher Fisher information is obtained than that for the incoherent case. Our results pave the way to clarifying the role of coherence in quantum limited metrology.
Quantum metrology is being gradually studied for weak measurement systems. For weak measurement systems with thermal state pointer, we find that in the displacement space corresponding to imaginary weak values, the maximal QFI after successful postselection can attain the level of thermal fluctuations, without surpassing total QFI, and that QFI which increases with increasing temperature can constantly improve the measurement precision. These results are much better than that of weak measurement with pure state (i.e., Gaussian state) pointer. On the other hand, in Kerr nonlinear interaction sy…
