Using effective field theoretical methods, we show that besides the already observed gravitational waves, quantum gravity predicts two further massive classical fields leading to two new massive waves. We set a limit on the masses of these new modes using data from the Eöt-Wash experiment. We point out that the existence of these new states is a model independent prediction of quantum gravity. We then explain how these new classical fields could impact astrophysical processes and in particular the binary inspirals of neutron stars or black holes. We calculate the emission rate of these new states in binary inspirals astrophysical processes.
We consider holography of two pp-wave metrics in conformal gravity, their one point functions, and asymptotic symmetries. One of the metrics is a generalization of the standard pp-waves in Einstein gravity to conformal gravity. The holography of this metric shows that within conformal gravity one can have realised solution which has non-vanishing partially massless response (PMR) tensor even for vanishing subleading term in the Fefferman-Graham expansion (i.e. Neumann boundary conditions), and vice-versa.
We construct the AdS-plane wave solutions of generic gravity theory built on the arbitrary powers of the Riemann tensor and its derivatives in analogy with the pp-wave solutions. In constructing the wave solutions of the generic theory, we show that the most general two tensor built from the Riemann tensor and its derivatives can be written in terms of the traceless-Ricci tensor. Quadratic gravity theory plays a major role; therefore, we revisit the wave solutions in this theory. As examples to our general formalism, we work out the six-dimensional conformal gravity and its nonconformal deform…
General Relativity is a hugely successful description of gravitation. However, both theory and observations suggest that General Relativity might have significant classical and quantum corrections in the Strong Gravity regime. Testing the strong field limit of gravity is one of the main objectives of the future gravitational wave detectors. One way to detect strong gravity is through the polarization of gravitational waves. For quasi-normal modes of black-holes in General Relativity, the two polarisation states of gravitational waves have the same amplitude and frequency spectrum. Using the pr…
We derive the exact gravitational wave solutions in a general class of quadratic Poincaré gauge gravity models. The Lagrangian includes all possible linear and quadratic invariants constructed from the torsion and the curvature, including the parity odd terms. The ansatz for the gravitational wave configuration and the properties of the wave solutions are patterned following the corresponding ansatz and the properties of the plane-fronted electromagnetic wave.
We consider the primordial gravity wave background produced by inflation. We compute the small anisotropy produced by the primordial scalar fluctuations.
On the holographic complexity dual to the bulk action, we investigate the action growth for a shock wave geometry in a massive gravity theory within the Wheeler-De Witt (WDW) patch at the late time limit. For a global shock wave, the graviton mass does not affect the action growth in the bulk, i.e. the complexity on the boundary, showing that the action growth (complexity) is the same for both the Einstein gravity and the massive gravity. Nevertheless, for a local shock wave that depends on transverse coordinates, the action growth (complexity) is proportional to the butterfly velocity for the…
Light waves carry along their own gravitational field; for simple plain electromagnetic waves the gravitational field takes the form of a pp-wave. I present the corresponding exact solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations and discuss the dynamics of classical particles and quantum fields in this gravitational and electromagnetic background.
We derive the exact gravitational wave solutions in a general class of quadratic metric-affine gauge gravity models. The Lagrangian includes all possible linear and quadratic invariants constructed from the torsion, nonmetricity and the curvature. The ansatz for the gravitational wave configuration and the properties of the wave solutions are patterned following the corresponding ansatz and the properties of the plane-fronted electromagnetic wave.
We construct exact pp-wave solutions of ghost-free infinite derivative gravity and demonstrate that the sourceless theory does not bring any pp-wave solutions save for that of Einstein's gravity. These waves described in the Kerr-Schild form also solve the linearized field equations of the theory. We also find an exact gravitational shock wave with non-singular curvature invariants and with a finite limit in the ultraviolet regime of non-locality which is in contrast to the divergent limit in Einstein's theory.
In this paper, we obtain dispersion relations corresponding to plane wave solutions in various Lorentz-breaking extensions of gravity with dimensions 3, 4, 5 and 6. We demonstrate that these dispersion relations display an usual Lorentz-invariant mode when the corresponding additive term involves higher derivatives.
We consider the nondynamical Chern-Simons (nCS) modified gravity, which is regarded as a parity-odd theory of massive gravity in four dimensions. We first find polarization modes of gravitational waves for $θ=x/μ$ in nCS modified gravity by using the Newman-Penrose formalism where the null complex tetrad is necessary to specify gravitational waves. We show that in the Newman-Penrose formalism, the number of polarization modes is one in addition to an unspecified $Ψ_4$, implying three degrees of freedom for $θ=x/μ$. This compares with two for a canonical embedding of $θ=t/μ$. Also, if one intro…
Teleparallel theory of gravity and its modifications have been studied extensively in literature. However, gravitational waves has not been studied enough in the framework of teleparallelism. In the present study, we discuss gravitational waves in general theories of teleparallel gravity containing the torsion scalar $T$, the boundary term $B$ and a scalar field $ϕ$. The goal is to classify possible new polarizations generalizing results presented in Ref.[15]. We show that, if the boundary term is minimally coupled to the torsion scalar and the scalar field, gravitational waves have the same p…
Quasi-normal modes (QNMs) uniquely characterize the final black-hole. Till now, only the QNM frequency and damping time are used to test General relativity. In this work, we show explicitly that another property of the QNMs --- their polarization --- can be a reliable tool for probing gravity. We provide a consistent test for General relativity by considering Chern-Simons gravity. Distinguishing Chern-Simons gravity from General relativity using only template matching is highly challenging. Thus a parameter that can differentiate between Chern-Simons gravity and GR will be a suitable candidate…
We consider the gravitational radiation in conformal gravity theory. We perturb the metric from flat Mikowski space and obtain the wave equation after introducing the appropriate transformation for perturbation. We derive the effective energy-momentum tensor for the gravitational radiation, which can be used to determine the energy carried by gravitational waves.
We demonstrate that Huygens' principle for gravitational waves fails in quadratic gravity models that exhibit conformal symmetry at high energies. This results in the blurring of gravitational wave signals over finite timescales related to the energy scale of new physics $M_{\star}$. Furthermore, on very small scales the gravitational wave Green's function reduces to that of the wave equation in two dimensions. In principle, $M_{\star}$ could be constrained directly from gravitational wave observations.
We consider the scattering of gravitational waves off a Schwarzschild black hole in $f(R)$ gravity. We show that the reflection and transmission coefficients for tensor waves are the same as in General Relativity. While the scalar waves, which are not present in General Relativity, demonstrate interesting features. The equation that governs these scalar waves can be reduced to a Volterra integral equation. Analysis of this equation shows that a larger fraction of these waves are reflected compared to what one obtains for tensors. This may provide a novel observational signature for fourth orde…
In this work, the s-wave, p-wave and d-wave holographic superconductors in the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity are investigated in the probe limit. For the present approach, it is shown that the equations of motion for different wave states in Einstein gravity can be written into a unified form, and condensates take place in all three cases. This scheme is then generalized to Hořava-Lifshitz gravity, and an unified equation for multiple holographic states is obtained. Furthermore, the properties of the condensation and the optical conductivity are studied numerically. It is found that, in the case of …
In this work we investigate several theoretical and phenomenological implications of a scalar -$F(R)$ gravity containing a non-minimal coupling to the scalar curvature. This kind of model is a generalization of axion-$F(R)$ gravity models, so we shall examine several implications of the latter theory. Firstly we study in detail the Einstein frame picture of the model, and also we discuss the dynamics of the cosmological system. By appropriately using the equations of motion, we demonstrate that an arbitrary cosmological evolution can be realized. Also we study the gravitational waves of the th…
We discuss the scalar mode of gravitational waves emerging in the context of $F(R)$ gravity by taking into account the chameleon mechanism. Assuming a toy model with a specific matter distribution to reproduce the environment of detection experiment by a ground-based gravitational wave observatory, we find that chameleon mechanism remarkably suppresses the scalar wave in the atmosphere of Earth, compared with the tensor modes of the gravitational waves. We also discuss the possibility to detect and constrain scalar waves by the current gravitational observatories and advocate a necessity of th…
The goal of this short report is to summarise some key results based on our previous works on model independent tests of gravity at large scales in the Universe, their connection with the properties of gravitational waves, and the implications of the recent measurement of the speed of tensors for the phenomenology of general families of gravity models for dark energy.
We point out that there are only three polarizations for gravitational waves in $f(R)$ gravity, and the polarization due to the massive scalar mode is a mix of the pure longitudinal and transverse breathing polarization. The classification of the six polarizations by the Newman-Penrose quantities is based on weak, plane and null gravitational waves, so it is not applicable to the massive mode.
Recently, the author proposed an alternative vector theory of gravity. To the best of our knowledge, vector gravity also passes available tests of gravity, and, in addition, predicts the correct value of the cosmological constant without free parameters. It is important to find a new feasible test which can distinguish between vector gravity and general relativity and determine whether gravity has a vector or a tensor origin. Here we propose such an experiment based on measurement of propagation direction of gravitational waves relative to the perpendicular arms of a laser interferometer. We s…
